He needs redemption. I need revenge. Too bad only one of us will survive.
Ever since my mentor’s murder, I've had one goal: kill the Elf King. I'll need every magic sigil I know because not only is he an arrogant ass, he shifts into a first class shadow daddy. I don't give up, even when I fail at my first attempt at murder. I'm used to being underestimated.
But no matter how many times I try to kill him, he laughs it off. He grins when I track him down on his quest to win back his kingdom. He smirks through every one of my attempts at slaying. Even unlocking my hidden power with his first-class schlongasaurus brings out a chuckle. The absolute nerve of this guy!
He tells me I can help him save the Harrowlands from ruin. I tell him he’ll lead me straight to mine. Then he confesses we're mates—and the attempted murder really turns him on. Which only makes me want to stab him repeatedly. Nevermind his cunning, his protection, even his Godds-cursed plant obsession are starting to grow on me. I’ll fall for him over his dead body.
Killing him was meant to be my greatest accomplishment—being his queen might just be my undoing.
Emma Eden’s favorite food is drama, which she indulges in with every single one of the characters she’s written over 15 years of scribbles.
That’s why only fantasy worlds and strong heroes can contain her most outrageous, fun, silly and romantic impulses. The women she writes are complex messy beasts in worlds you’ll never want to leave. She brings this “big shark energy” and Happily Ever Afters to every one of her books.
When she’s not cooking up words, she’s cooking soup, burning baked goods and avoiding the sun.
You can read her thoughtful ramblings by signing up for her newsletter and ignoring her on socials.
This is hysterical, it literally starts with Maggie stabbing Noth and continues from there. Maggie has great character development and it’s interesting seeing how the history plays out. This was a perfect palate cleanser after a darker more intense read. Thanks so much to the author for allowing me to read it early 💜
This was the perfect start to an enemies to lovers, a honey trap with a twisted knife. If love and hate were a thin line turned into a couple, it would be Maggie and Noth. She was his pumpkin & He was her Rat Face. I absolutely loved how fun and magical this read was.
Sometimes revenge has unexpected outcomes. Noth and Maggie have the most interesting relationship dynamic and I have thoroughly enjoyed following their journey. From the nicknames they give each other “Rat Face” and “Pumpkin” to the gradual shift in their relationship from enemies to lovers, what a perfect sequel to the first book! If you love reading romantasy with a hint of comedy and dark romance, you will love this book! Emma Eden has done it again. Thank you to the author for allowing me to ARC read for you again!
I really enjoyed this story, although it did take me a while to warm up to Maggie. She is so full of anger and hatred and can’t seem to help herself from making everyone around her miserable too. I was also annoyed that it took her SO LONG to actually ask Noth “why?” as that would have been the first thing I would have demanded to know! The tension and chemistry between the two of them was absolute fire though and the difficult task of Noth reclaiming his throne (and his mate) made for some nail biting and emotional moments that had me glued to the pages! They both had to recognize that they needed to accept all the parts of themselves in order to truly trust in the unconditional love they had for each other. And, when Noth told Maggie “You don’t have to be perfect for me to love you.” it hit my heart so hard that tears came to my eyes - because who has never carried doubts that they are enough? As the third story in The Cake Chaos Chronicles, these really should be read in order to understand the characters and what has been happening. I can’t wait to learn what is going on with Fallon in the next book!
I received a copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
First of all omg the start of this book had me hooked immediately 😂😍 I got this book as an Arc ( thank you Emmy🫶) and i was so excited to read an enemies to lovers from her. A witch and and elf 🤭 She wants him dead 😵 immediately i was in love🩷
The story was really interesting and i loved that the couple was interesting and that she really did tried to kill him. I was a little confused at some points to be honest with the plot but in the end i understood what had happened🩷
I really enjoyed that we got a inside of how the protagonists felt and their trauma and we were with them in the process of healing and loving themselves again. Especially Maggie🧡
The spicy scenes were amazing and i love how Emmy writes spicy scenes. I love the world she has created and i am looking forward to seeing more of it soon🥰
I received this as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
Attempted Murder and Other Ways to Seduce Your Mate starts out at level 100 with both our MCs impaled on page one. Noth with a knife, because Maggie is trying to kill him, and Maggie on Noth’s pierced dick, because she’s a terrible assassin.
It maintains a high level of absurdity and whimsy for most of the book. Maggie is Wile E. Coyote in her messy poorly planned murder attempts. Noth is a vain elf king who preens, whips his lovely hair about, and is wildly turned on by her efforts to hurt him. Which is nearly impossible, because he isn’t fully elf. They fight, banter, and call each other stupid names the entire time.
This book has a lot of quippy lines, humorous unhinged sexy bits, and creative uses for shadow powers. I was literally highlighting lines to text my book besties with captions like, "LMFAO what is happening??" (Book besties immediately added this to their TBR and are as feral for it as Noth is for Maggie.)
My one complaint was the “relationship break to work on ourselves" trope. And this is mostly just a personal pet peeve I suppose. Yes, Maggie and Noth both had a lot of issues they needed to work on, but there was no logical reason they couldn’t work on them together. Adults should be supporting and taking care of their partner through times of struggle or growth.
Do note, this is not really a stand alone. They talk about things that happen in book one enough to get by. But you will be missing some context about what they are talking about pretty often.
Here are just a few of the lines I thought were fun enough to highlight while reading that don’t require heavy censorship. (They both sure do talk about Noth’s dick a lot in funny ways and I think I highlighted them all.)
“The line between love and hate was as thin as Maggie’s patience.”
“Her revenge perfumes the air and I was feral for it.”
“Just let me realign your neck chakra, bitch.”
“Do you want me to show you your magic or not? Hint: I’m about to destroy you for any other man for all time.”
“I wish you had never been born, Noth.” “Well, now you are just being romantic.”
Attempted Murder and Other Ways to Seduce Your Mate is out today. It’s the perfect fantasy romcom and unlike anything I’ve read before.
The story starts off with our FMC Maggie attempting (and failing) to murder our MMC Noth…and he likes it 😂. I knew after the first chapter that I was going to love this book. It’s full of laugh out loud banter, spicy spice, adventure, and the most interesting cast of characters (and creatures).
As funny as this book is, it also explores some more sensitive topics. Maggie and Noth each are dealing with their own trauma and past, as they go through their journey.
What to expect: 🍃 Enemies to lovers 🍃 Unhinged shadow daddy 🍃 Crystal and plant magic 🍃 Fated mates 🍃 Witch with broken magic 🍃 Dual POV
This is the second book in an interconnected series, and I really wish I had read book 1 first. I felt like I was missing background information on the characters and story. But, I will definitely go back and read it.
🗡️ cozy enemies to lovers 🗡️ witch x elf shadow daddy 🗡️ quest 🗡️ reverse grumpy/sunshine 🗡️ yearning and angst 🗡️ forbidden love 🗡️ banter for days 🗡️ dream dating
This books starts off with a bang (literally) and a dagger to the ribs…and I was here for it! It took me completely by surprise and I was hooked from the first page. The banter here is seriously expert level. These two have history, and the sarcasm and snark flows like blood from a stab wound 😂 Noth cracked me up. This shifter Elf king trying to reclaim his throne is so turned on by Maggie’s murder attempts he had me cackling.
The dual POV in this book is a masterclass and Noth’s chapters had me rolling with his internal dialogue. Maggie’s chapters were slightly more somber, and I found myself feeling compassion for her. I was dying for these two to have a real conversation and connect some dots between them. Despite the banter and snark, there is much unsaid between them until after halfway. It was a great juxtaposition of grumpy/sunshine, and how different people handle trauma. Maggie’s self doubt was crushing, and I felt so much empathy for her throughout. The self-healing and growth she displayed was excellent, and I teared up in those chapters where she is working on herself.
The forbidden love aspect was visceral and felt like its own character. The angst I had along with Noth and Maggie about whether they could be together was sharp. I’m not usually a fan of MC waffling back and forth about claiming their love, but I will say it kept me reading. I had to see them get their HEA.
The spice was 🔥, and much better and more frequent than what I remember in book 1. Noth and Maggie were 🥵 together, and the way he used those shadows was 😏🥵.
The plot had me a tad confused at times, I should have reread book 1 as a refresher. But it came together regardless and I remembered the world and battles from book 1.
If you like semi-cozy, semi-monster romance with journeys, sentient woods, a sassy grandma, snarky witch’s hiding their feelings behind sarcasm, and sunshine elf kings who know how to use their shadows… then you should check this out!
If you're looking for a funny, spicy, and quick read, then look no further. The banter was by far my favorite part!
Maggie is seeking revenge on Noth and is constantly trying to end him. North finds her attempts to be attractive and just laughs it off. Only to find out that they are mates, which adds a whole new fun dynamic!
I didn't read book one, but I didn't feel like I missed out. It can definitely be read as a standalone!
This book had me hooked from the start! A tough heroine wants revenge on the Elf King, but he’s too powerful, too smug—and way too hot—for his own good. Every failed murder attempt just makes their chemistry stronger. 🔥 It’s a wild mix of magic, sass, and slow-burn romance, with plenty of action and laughs along the way. If you like enemies who can’t decide whether to kiss or kill each other, this one’s a must-read! 🤩😍
Another great and funny book! Now I understand Maggie so much more. I'm glad I read the first book because you dislike Maggie in it and Noth too. Well I did haha. But in this book, you get to understand and see how they both act and why they are like that. Stubborn as no other for sure. But it's just as funny as the first book. Brad, somehow is still in this book and I'm so surprised that he is. Unlike book one, this one isn't so much adventure going to find things, this one is more trying to get Both crown back. Still liked it so much!!!!
Spells✨️, spice🔥, & a dash of delightful chaos❤️🔥
I dove into "Attempted Murder & Other Ways to Seduce Your Mate" by Emma Eden as an ARC, not realizing how quickly I’d fall for its sharp humor, swoony tension, and magical mayhem. Within just a few chapters, I was already on Amazon ordering Eden's other book, "Mates & Other Obstacles to Accidentally Saving the World" because when a story is this unhinged and charming, you simply don’t want to leave it!
Both books stand beautifully on their own, yet together they form the kind of series that feels like curling up inside of a rom-fantasy fever dream: fated mates, high-stakes quests, sarcastic banter, and enough yearning to keep you wanting more. Eden’s writing hums with confidence as it leans into romantasy tropes with affection. You can tell Eden truly loves this genre and enjoys having fun with it.
What stood out most for me about these two books was how the humor and heat coexist with genuine heart. Beneath the jokes and spicy tension, there’s a tenderness about trust, vulnerability, and finding your person in a world that keeps trying to knock you sideways. The pacing is brisk, but the emotional notes always shimmer through the chaos.
It’s giving the vibe of Olivia Atwater’s whimsy mixed with Ali Hazelwood’s snark and a dash of Talia Hibbert’s warmth and bite. If you love your romantasy served with equal parts laughter, longing, and a healthy dose of chaos magic, Emma Eden’s "Cake Chaos Chronicles" should be at the top of your list - perfect cozy reads for any romantasy connoisseur.
This was a cute, spicy enemies to lovers book. It was definitely more of enemies to ‘oh we’re immediately lovers’ which was fine for the vibe for the book. It was kind of goofy in a fun way, but at times it did become repetitive and a little annoying with the whole dynamic. I also kept getting confused by the side quests everyone was going on and I won’t lie - the main villain being named Brad really threw me off. Overall, a fun little read but definitely cliche.
Rating: 3.5-4 stars (I rounded up for creativity. It rolled a 12 on my d20 scale—decent but def not a critical hit)
Remember my review of book one? Five stars, no notes, absolute druid perfection. Book two? "Attempted Murder and Other Ways to Seduce Your Mate" (I'm using the acronym AMaOWtSYM from here on because COME ON)? It was... fine? Good even? But also I have notes this time.
The characters are still great. FMC Maggie is out here playing the "woo-woo crystal ditz" while secretly being a witch in training with the darkest sarcasm and all the revenge rage a girl could want. She's giving chaotic good energy with chaotic neutral execution and I'm here for it. I appreciate it. Noth, who's our brooding, pierced (EVERYwhere) usurped half-elf king MMC with plant magic, is the kind of morally gray MMC who tortures the FMC with sex and wit in equal measure, while his inner monologue makes him sound very different. Their redemption arc? Actually great. Their banter? Piercing (see what I did there?). The chemistry? Undeniable.
Also of note, Noth's magic is fascinating but deeply confusing. My TTRPG brain spent way too much time trying to figure out what class/subclass/homebrew nonsense he'd be, and I kept coming up empty. He gave me major "At the Mountains of Madness" vibes- you know, where Lovecraft describes the creature so vaguely that everyone just visualizes something different? Yeah. That. Not necessarily bad! Just... abstract.
The plot in AMaOWtSYM felt disjointed at times. Like, I'd be reading along and suddenly realize I'd missed something, so I'd flip back a few pages only to discover... nope, the story just *did that*. Narrative jump cuts without warning. My DM would call that railroading, but in book form.
Also (and this is purely personal preference) AMaOWtSYM is HEAVY on the spice and humor with story/plot kind of sprinkled in as garnish. Which, listen, I get it. That's the vibe. Some people are absolutely going to love that ratio. But I'm the player who gets annoyed when we spend three sessions in a tavern without advancing the plot, you know? I needed more narrative momentum to balance all the steam.
If you're into romance-heavy fantasy that prioritizes banter, unhinged humor, and *a LOT* of spice, you're going to have a way better time with this than I did. It's a fun addition to the series and definitely rounds things out, but it's not making it onto my permanent physical shelf. Book one is still the reigning champion for me.
Still, I really appreciated getting AMaOWtSYM as an ARC and being able to leave an honest review! Sometimes a book just isn't your exact flavor, and that's okay. Give it a try!

⭐️ 3.75 📚 book 2 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ (open door and multiple scenes)
The opening scene had my full attention. We get a stabby female in the throes of passion simply so she could stab him. I did feel like the pace plateaued a bit after this but the banter, and absurd humor had me consistently chuckling the entire time.
Both MC’s are flawed and at first neither seem interested in bettering themselves. They both resist the attraction and pull from one another and only when they start to slowly accept that do they begin to improve themselves (to be better for each other). It gave the “love yourself before you can love someone else”. I like that they both have their own set of struggles to overcome. They work on themselves as well as come together to be stronger as a couple.
It’s a cute read and I would go back to read book 1 based on this so that I could appreciate these characters more.
What I loved: - Ridiculous & absurd banter - The unhinged flirting - MMC he’s a dark cinnamon roll who can also be a moron - The fact he’s so supportive of her attempts to kill him, and it turns him on - The contempt for Brad and his sense of sinister beige - Yaya. Her spunk, her love and teasing of Noth. - Noth’s affection or obsession for his plants, especially Gertrude -
What did not work for me: - The book is the second in the series, but is supposedly a standalone. It features the characters from the first book, but we are thrown straight into their situationship, and the rest of the characters are all immediately there like we should know them from the first story. It felt like I was missing important information from the first. - The writing style itself is a little jumpy. There were some bits that felt all over the place and made me feel like “wait how did we get here”
Overall I would recommend to others who want a funny and banter filled story!
Tropes: - Enemies to Lovers - Shadow Daddy - Crystal & plant magic - Touch her & die - Banter - Stabby female - Reverse grumpy / sunshine
Favorite Quotes: - "May we all have the unending confidence of an undeserving man." - "No, no, innocent girl. You need me because I'm willing to do what everyone else won't. Obliterate anything, anyone, everyone in my way just so I can have a taste of your skin. What would I have done if they had touched you? The Harrowlands would have burned to ash." - "It's ridiculous you're not obsessed with me yet. I'll die of a broken heart faster than your assassination attempts."
Thank you to the author for this eARC!

Okay, I enjoyed this one WAY more than I think I should have 🤣
This follows Maggie, Evie’s sister, who is out for revenge against Noth, the male elf who murdered her mentor and basically mother. When she learns Noth has left to find an item called the Calix to regain his throne, she charges after him determined to finally end him.
This was such an unhinged and chaotic story. The botched assassination attempts were hilarious, and then turned into these rather heated…activities and I was just like, “what did I get myself into?!”.
I don’t typically enjoy stories with a lot of rage, revenge, and misunderstandings, but the author played it all out so well, that I just enjoyed myself the entire time instead. The way it’s written, it made sense how Maggie was feeling, it made sense how Noth handled it, or how he understood Maggie enough to allow her to do her thing while waiting to explain, and so the rage I understood, the way it was handled I understood, I never felt annoyed or irritated. I just felt like I understood Maggie, and I wanted to help her. I loved how she wanted to repair her relationship with her sister and how she handled that in the end. It just ended up being a rather emotional story.
Her and Noth are the perfect match for each other. They just met in the middle each time, and it was chaotic, messy and unhinged. And I loved every moment of it.
Along with the revenge attempts that were occurring, they are also trying to find this item Noth needs to get his throne back, and this vain elf grows a lot too. He learns that it’s not always about him, and that sometimes, change is good and he just needs to be brave enough to take that first step. I absolutely adored his character. He was such fun, and maybe a bit crazy 😆 He made me think of Howl, especially when he got his cold 😆 Noth is officially one of my favorite characters ever.
“It’s ridiculous you’re not obsessed with me yet. I’ll die of a broken heart faster than your assassination attempts”.
The romance in here is insane. It’s like they couldn’t keep their hands off each other, even though Maggie was trying sooo hard to remove Noth from the picture. It just made it funny and also hot?
This was such a fun read and I’m soooo looking forward to the next book!
Thank you to the author for the e-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The story kicks off with a mid-coitus stabbing and rockets off from there. Maggie, our FMC, does her darnedest to kill Noth (our MMC), but there seems to be an unholy shadow demon inside him that authentically enjoys chomping away at the dagger she's lodged between his ribs. And the assassination attempt does nothing to to quell his desire for her. Quite the opposite, actually.
Both lead characters are snarky brats, but it totally works for me. Noth reminded me quite a bit of Marvel's version of Loki. Just a beautiful, terrible, enchanting bastard that you can't help but love. Like this little gem:
"It's ridiculous that you're not obsessed with me yet."
Maggie is a flawed character, but the guilt from her past drives her to be better. She's plagued by guilt for things that may or may not even be her fault. She guards her heart and lashes out with characteristic snark (and the occasional dagger). She keeps Noth at arms' length by trying to kill him every now and then and calling him Rat Face, but we can see through it whenever anyone disrespects him in her presence.
"My rage didn't burn hot, it had turned ice cold. No one called Rat Face a half breed and lived."
Their relationship is a great example of some of the best parts of the enemies to lovers trope. I remember someone once describing the appeal of this trope is showing the reader that it's possible for someone to see you at your absolute worst and still love you." That's such an integral concept in this book. This line got me misty:
"I would never leave you for making a mistake. I would never leave you for making a lifetime of mistakes."
The violence is very fun and I love their banter and sex magic, but the slow melting of their hearts is (for me) the best part of the book. She's closed off because of her need for vengeance, he's driven to be alone so he can reclaim his throne. But as hard as they try, they wind up orbiting each other closer and closer every day. Their violence sings to one another and they clearly understand each other more deeply than anyone else possibly could. It's quite sweet. Violent, but sweet.
"No one had offered to hand me a severed head, or more importantly- cake."
I was very happy to receive this story as an ARC. I haven't read the author's first book in the series, and although I admit there were references I didn't understand, I still feel like the story stands well on its own.
This book is absolute, unadulterated chaos, and I mean that in the best possible way 😂🗡️ If you want a fantasy romcom that leans heavily into the romcom side, strap in because you are in for a wild ride full of laugh out loud banter, unhinged Shadow Daddy energy, and an actual fated mates plot that starts with attempted murder. Yep, you read that right 👀
The core strength of this story is the sheer, unbridled energy of the main characters. Maggie (our FMC) is the definition of bad-ass with feminine rage - she's on a clear ‘cut’ path out for revenge and is constantly trying to 💀 poor Noth. She brings the spice and the danger.
I did go from thinking Maggie was acting super immature to thinking it was nice to see her character growth arc, showing a real sense of a maturing FMC who has to deal with the trauma and tears while still being delightfully unhinged. Those are my fave kind 😉 Noth (He Falls First btw), gives us that dark, protective energy that screams "touch her and d!e" in the most endearing (insane) way possible lol. The chemistry is off the charts and impossible to ignore, even if it's always one second away from an assassination attempt 💀
From the unique use of crystal magic and plant magic to the infamous cake chaos, the world building is fast paced and genuinely hilarious. My rating is absolutely for the humor and the pure, unexpected fun of it all. I really, truly enjoyed the insanity and was literally laughing out loud through out the story. This is a book you won’t forget about.
I will say I didn’t know that this was a second book in a series, so I didn’t read the first, but this could definitely be read as a standalone. It’s well written and well-thought out.
But that being said: if your preferred reading experience is hilarious chaos, dark humor, and high stakes enemies to lovers, you need this on your TBR! It's an incredibly fun, well-executed book that deserves all the hype from fans in this particular genre!
Thank you to the author for letting me ARC read. Get your copy today!! 🗡️💀
This book was a fun quick read. An easy 4 of 5 stars in my opinion. The story is great with maybe a few small pacing issues here and there but I don’t feel they take from the story in anyway (4 of 5 on story). The characters are fun with some depth and history to them (3 of 5 stars). The spice is fun and, as you learn, required (4 of 5 for all the build up). Not much world building but I think the amount we see if perfect for the story to be told (3 of 5).
It is fated mates and another fae/fairy story but with a fun take on the other creatures of fairy and how they interact with the world. The characters grow and learn throughout so this feel much more character driven to me than anything else.
What to say about Maggie and Noth?
Maggie is a little spit fire! With her attempts to kill Noth, she is tenacious and goal oriented at the very least. Not an FMC who is perfect by any stretch, in fact she is kind of fumbling but in a great lovable way. She knows she has amends to make for her past but she has no idea how she is going to do that…
Noth is an asshole. A deposed king who has felt the bite of betrayal he is also goal oriented and driven to get what he, and his nightmare, want. A skilled warrior and a worthy king, Noth is driven to seek out retribution against those that wronged him and stole his throne. He plans to get his throne back and he has an idea on how to do that…but with Maggie, well no plan is ever perfect until you learn to use all your strengths. And you can’t really call yourself worthy until you accept yourself…
Put these two together and you have a revenge driven pair, that once they are on the same page, are nigh on unstoppable. Maggie takes to her witch powers with Noth’s help and begins to use them for great things (and some rather petty but funny things).
The banter is top tier and the barbs being thrown are great.
I give it two thumbs up with a cheesy grin (iykyk)!
First and foremost I want to thank author who reached out to me and asked me to ARC again for her, since I haven't noticed the ARC shout-out because of how busy life is so thank you, Emma it was an honour!
After the first book of the "cake series," as I call it, we have 2 more characters here. The book is a solid 4.5⭐️
We follow Maggie (Evie's sister) in this book! A witch with many kill instincts. She is ready to do whatever she must to succeed but Noth, has other plans, WAY DIFFERENT PLANS. Their story is full of history and witty banter. Those 2 were meant to be and it was obvious to everyone else except them!
Noth, the Elf shifter king who tries to reclaim his throne because of certain predicaments, turns to Maggie, who is a way for it. But little did he know that meeting her would give him way more things to think about than solutions. The ending was also EPIC! "For your protection" I am just leaving this here, if you know, you know.
The book starts with a literal dagger and banter. I laughed so hard and screamed when Maggie tried to exact her vengeance and failed, miserably! The chemistry between them is strong and I love (and laugh) at how the characters react to it!
What I loved about this book was Maggie's journey. How she developed. How does she heal and be the woman who is at the end and of course how Noth never judged her but always was there. *chef's kiss*
I enjoyed the plot and book 2 was written very good, the author developed very much between the two books and I can't wait to read more!
Ps. I think I needed a reminder of book 1 before I would read the 2nd but things got in place very quickly and I remembered fast enough.

Now, where to even begin with this one... I read book 1 a couple weeks ago and ate it up. But if you've read my review for Mates and Other Obstacles to Accidentally Saving The World, you'd know that I could not stand Maggie in that book. So, obviously, I had very mixed feelings getting into this book.
However, miss Emma Eden delivered another masterpiece that I simply could not put down. The opening scene—stunning. It hooked me in like nothing else. Noth is the picture perfect book boyfriend every woman needs. One thing that made me mad to no end was that from the very beginning, they could've just talked, and that would've saved them a lot of time (and nerves), but why not add a healthy dose of miscommunication?
I'm sorry, buddy, what do you mean? So, yeah, definitely docked that half a star for that.
But overall, I really enjoyed the book, and for sure more than the first one. I went into it hating Maggie, but after her 3rd act glow up session, I could tell she has matured a lot, and really, she wasn't always the one to blame for her and her sister's not-so-good relationship. As for Noth, who doesn't love a man with a whole lotta trauma and a sassy grandma? A shadow daddy king with a sprinkle of plant magic is the perfect recipe for a book husband, y'know what I'm saying?
It's a great honor to be a part of the street team for the release of this book, for which I'd like to thank the author herself. And to finish off this review, I'd like to offer one last criticism: NOT ENOUGH DECLAN!
I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to the author for reaching out to me and allowing me the privilege of being able to arc read her upcoming book. I truly appreciate it.
This book was so much fun! Between Maggie and Noth's Banter, her attempts to ....... him, the nicknames she came up with for him, the spice, and Maggie falling for Noth this book was incredible! Watching their relationship play out, well the two of them grow, and really find themselves together and especially seperately towards the end was so beautiful! I loved it so much that I binge read it in a few hours!
I will say that I hadn't read the previous book, and well this series might be interconnected standalones, I really wished I had read the previous book before starting this one. Emma Eden was fantastic at being able to catch me up on who was who, and previous events all throughout the book in the best way! Every catch up moment was actually applicable to where it could be used, without being too wordy or too telling. Instead she created a madness in me making me want to dive into the previous book, so I can see how it all unfolded in it's full depth. That is a truly incredible ability to have!
If you're looking for a cozy, light-hearted, absolutely funny and fun read, that you will devour in a few hours just like I did, it's all here in this book, and you're absolutely going to love it!
Thank you so very much again from the bottom of my heart for putting your faith in me when you allowed me the absolute privilege of being able to read your latest book baby! I truly appreciate, and I absolutely loved Maggie, Noth and this book, and I really can't wait until I can go and read the other!
I want to start with the fact that I received this book as an ARC, and that the finished copy might vary from what I read. I loved the first book, but unfortunately this one I had a tougher time with.
Plot: This book follows Maggie & Noth and the story of noth reclaiming his throne from a usurper. Maggie discovers that Noth has murdered her mentor, and decides to charm her way into his life for revenge. The book is pretty funny for the first 60%, with Maggie constantly trying to murder noth- she is powerless and the attempts on his life are laughable. How she does finally gain power, and how that is fuelled was too much for me. I just found this even as a fantasy book so wild I had to try pretty hard to get through the book. The last chapter for me also was unnecessary, and abrupt. For me this didn't land, but I am sure it would be someone else's cup of tea.
Characters:
I liked Noth and Maggie although Maggie took some warming up. Noth was witty and fantastic with the banter- I loved the dynamic! But I couldn't get behind the actions of the characters sometimes- I kept saying "why?!" Outloud.
Pacing:
Pacing in this book vs the first was better, but I overall enjoyed the first book more. This felt drawn out but not in a good way- but atleast the author gave scenes time to make sense.
Conclusions & Thoughts:
I honestly can't say this book was for me. I always like trying to branch out and after the first book I wanted to continue the series because I enjoyed the first adventure. This one just wasn't my cup of tea but I'm positive it is for someone else.
If you want a high-concept, laugh-out-loud fantasy rom-com, you should check out *Attempted Murder and Other Ways to Seduce Your Mate*. The story is wild from start to finish, with a fated mates twist: the heroine is out for revenge, and the hero is all in on her schemes.
The real highlight is the wild chemistry between the main characters. Maggie is a chaotic, revenge-driven heroine whose failed attempts to take down the Elf King are hilarious. Noth, the confident and striking Shadow King, actually enjoys her attempts and sees her determination as a fun challenge. He’s totally unfazed by her plans. Their nonstop bickering and intense tension make their relationship a blast to read, and the quick, witty dialogue keeps things funny throughout.
Emma Eden excels at delivering witty, quippy lines and imaginative uses of shadow powers. The novel employs a masterful dual perspective: Noth’s internal monologue is often hilarious in its self-importance and protective instincts, while Maggie’s chapters present a slightly more somber view of her tragic motives, allowing readers to feel genuine compassion for her mission.
This is a highly entertaining book, perfect for readers who enjoy dark fantasy blended with unhinged humor. The relentless chaos and witty back-and-forth are incredibly engaging. My only minor reservation, preventing a perfect five-star rating, is a slight desire for more moments of quiet emotional depth and genuine conversation amid the constant, delightful hijinks. Nonetheless, I wholeheartedly recommend this book for its sheer comedic force and unique character dynamics! I received this as an ARC copy
Maggie has exactly one goal: kill the Elf King responsible for her mentor’s murder. Unfortunately for her, he’s infuriatingly hard to kill, deeply amused by her repeated attempts, and convinced that fate has paired them as mates. As he works to reclaim his fallen kingdom, Maggie finds herself dragged along on his quest, armed with sigils, stubbornness, and a growing list of reasons she absolutely should not be attracted to him. Revenge was supposed to be simple. Fate, unsurprisingly, had other plans.
This is a fun, high-heat romantasy with sharper character work than I expected going in. Maggie is the standout here: her internal dialogue is excellent, her emotional arc feels intentional, and her growth lands better than it strictly needs to for a book this unserious on the surface. The banter is consistently strong, and the chemistry between Maggie and the Noth is undeniable. The spice is plentiful and unapologetic, and if that’s what you’re here for, this book absolutely delivers.
That said, the book sometimes struggles with its own tone. The text swings wildly between irreverent, modern snark and moments that ask for genuine emotional investment, which can create a bit of narrative whiplash. The volume of spice also stretches the emotional tension a bit thinner than I’d prefer, especially given the page count, though that’s very much a personal gripe rather than a technical flaw. Still, the premise is clever, the voice is distinctive, and despite its uneven balance, I had a good time. I’ll absolutely be checking out more from this author.
3/5 Fun and chaotic. Occasionally unsure what lane it’s in, but worth the ride.
Emma Eden’s “Attempted Murder and Other Ways to Seduce Your Mate” is book two in the fantasy rom-com series called “The Cake Chaos Chronicles.” This book is a spicy enemies-to-lovers tale between a powerful witch, Maggie (she’s Evie’s sister from book one), and Noth, a sassy and recently overthrown fae king. The series is made of interconnected standalones, so they can be read in order or separately (but I recommend them in order if you like backstory and drama 💅). There is a content warning page for review as well.
🎂 What to Expect 🎂 Forced Proximity, Fated Mates, Shadow/Plant Daddy, She tries to 🔪 him…a lot, Dual POV
I was not a member of the Maggie Fan Club when I started book two. I didn’t appreciate her chafing behavior or the way it seemed that she couldn’t acknowledge her choices in book one, but I can now proudly say: I AM a member of the Maggie Fan Club. Eden crafted a story arc for the ages here: Maggie grows reluctantly and purposefully throughout the story, and she puts in the work to heal from damage and trauma she didn’t choose, even if it hurts. She does it for herself, Evie, Noth, and her future. When we learn the truth of her story, her brisk and stubborn nature makes sense. I understood her more clearly, accepting that I lived and behaved similarly in my past (minus the 🔪). Think of her like ACOSF’s Nesta Archeron.
Also, FYI: Noth is basically like Loki in the first Avengers movie (down to the sass). He is a sassy, plant daddy king, and I love him. His story makes everything about him make sense. His Yaya is also a delight.
Emma Eden writes MMCs that worship the ground their mates walk on. Noth is no exception. He is dutifully explicit and worships appropriately. At 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5, Noth and Maggie are explosive and magically tied, chasing power and pleasure as they journey through the Harrowlands.
There is a healing journey that occurs for both of them that made me so happy and content. There are so many stories where characters find their mates, and that’s it. They somehow match perfectly, but this story also shows them genuinely taking the time to grow as individuals, which I loved so much.
I BETA read this book before I received my ARC, and I loved it. I love this series; the banter, the fun, the scorching heat, the healing…I love it. I loved returning to the Harrowlands and feeling Eden’s writing that oozes excitement from the moment we begin to read. I can’t get enough!
This book was such a fun, chaotic, banter-filled adventure and I devoured every minute of it. The characters? Loved. The quest? LOVED. It felt like a fantasy road trip full of knives, magic, sexual tension, and just a light sprinkle of attempted homicide. Maggie is on a revenge mission to avenge her mentor’s death, and she does not mess around. She literally tries to kill Noth during sex and honestly… iconic behavior. She’s a witch who hasn’t unlocked her powers yet, so her journey becomes about revenge, magic, and discovering her true self in the process. Enter Noth — a HOT ASF half-elf, half-nightmare king with a salamander mount like it’s a normal everyday vehicle. He’s trying to find the Calix to prove he’s the rightful king, and Maggie—willing or not—ends up tangled in his mission. Their adventure is everything: fighting monsters, bickering, flirting, nearly dying, nearly killing each other, and then proving themselves to a mermaid judge. I swear that was the moment Noth won Maggie’s heart (and probably the reader’s too). My favorite character besides the obvious answer (Noth) is Yaya — because who doesn’t want a badass grandma who would absolutely throw hands and then bake afterward? The ending was beautiful and genuinely emotional. Maggie finally gets closure with Rue, and the story wraps up with a well-earned, satisfying HEA. A rare, delicious treat in fantasy romance. Thank you so much for letting me ARC read this — and I’m sorry the review took a bit to get here! Just know the delay was powered by chaos, life, and probably a salamander-sized distraction.

The story begins with a bang (literally, because Maggie pretty easily seduces Noth as part of her 1st assassination plot) and remains delightfully unhinged chaos to the end.
Noth is the former elf king and he is trying to regain his throne. Realizing that Maggie, the angry, stabbity witch, is his mate is throwing a wrench in his plans. As he travels the realm searching for the object of immense power that will ensure he retakes the throne, Maggie tails him, trying various ways to end him.
Maggie is out for revenge because Noth killed her mentor and she's growing increasingly frustrated that Noth is seemingly impervious to her blades, spells and poisons.
Obviously, since this is a romance, they do work things out in the end and get their HEA, but both Noth and Maggie have to go through some intense personal growth, on top of the getting past the attempted unalivings, before that happens. Maggie must work through her anger issues and unresolved stuff with her sister. Noth has learn how to be himself fully, embracing his monstrous heritage as fully as he's embraces his elven side.
I really loved how Loki coded Noth was: gorgeous, arrogant, powerful and chaotic. Maggie wasn't a very sympathetic character in the previous book but somehow Emma Eden made me promptly forget that in the first few sentences of this one. I really enjoyed being able to advance read.
