I just finished reading this, and I rushed here because I need to vent out. PHENOMENAL. ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL. WOW.
This is my intro to a Rebecca Carter novel. I did not know what to expect, I just dived into it and the story sail me away. This is also actually my first nautical fic. I'm absolutely curious how things will go is everything happens in one setting and that's inside RMS Lusitania. I did my own research, and one of the BEST things I noticed reading this novel is how detailed the descriptions are and they were researched material: The ship, the clothing, the city settings, architectures, etc., yeah, these details were written in such a way that it's easier for any reader to imagine where the flow of the novel is taking us.
I fell in love with Cameron and Alix. They're beautifully written.
Listen, look... I can't say any more other than how I feel and I feel that this novel is something you should read especially if you're one who feels trapped in your life. Alix is a beautifully written female character and one that we can all root for. She isn't a forced, feisty damsel that we all read about nowadays to make readers "like" the main character, no, through and through, you learn to love all sides of Alix and how she got to realizing her power and taking control of her life. THAT is exactly the kind of female character more writers should aim to achieve. She IS feminine but she's not *just* the a-typical damsel, she's her own person. her own character.
Same goes for Cameron. My goodness, I fell in love with him the same way Alix shares her respect (and lust hahaha) every time she looks and thinks about him.
I've NEVER read anything like this before, that is why I highly recommend this novel. Absolutely, highly recommend you read this. Reading this novel made me realize that you don't need the world to love you and believe you, you only need one person to listen, love, and show you who you are and what you are truly made of.
I thank the author, Rebecca Carter, for writing this heart-pumping novel! I cannot wait to read her other works!
From the description of this book, I thought it was something right up my alley. A young woman loses her parents, and her uncle is in charge of estate. She has to be married in order to inherit estate so she finds a temporary husband. A The Lusitania voyage was included.
Unfortunately, I did not read far enough into the description. My own fault. It takes place during WW 1, which is fine. And, we all know what happens with the Lusitania. But, it turns into a fairly complicated espionage story. My eyes started to glaze over. It’s just not in my wheelhouse.
The relationship between the young woman and her fake fiancé was actually fun. They were actually suited to each other and their conversations bounced back and forth with humour and quick answers.
I’m glad there are lots of great reviews. It just wasn’t the story for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the Advance Readers Copy.
I had the opportunity to read an earlier version of this book as a beta reader, and now that I’ve read the final version, I can’t help but scream about how much I love it.
AN INHERITANCE OF LIES has it all: suspense, action, mystery, romance, and a rich historical setting aboard the Lusitania. Once you start reading, it’s impossible to put down. Rebecca’s beautiful prose brings every scene to life so vividly that you’ll feel as though you’re right there on the ship with the characters. The chemistry and banter between Cameron and Alexandra are off the charts from the very first page. Cameron is such a fascinating and yet mysterious character, the kind of character you can’t help but fall for. The mystery surrounding Alexandra’s parents’ keeps you hooked and delivers some satisfying plot twists along the way. I wish this book didn’t have an ending, just so I could keep reading!
Thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Pub for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I must say I enjoy the book a lot more than I expected. I didn't even feel the time passing while I read. The premise is intriguing, but what kept me reading was the prose. Carter weaved a vivid picture of the high political tension in 1920s.
The book is 4.5 stars for me but I settled for 4 because I found myself not liking the main character Alexandra too much. Oftentimes we get a glimpse of her admitting she was rich and spoiled but I never saw how we come back to that in the end.
Oh my goodness I don't know why I didn't read this book sooner because this historical fiction novel ended up being the most exciting story ever! If you are looking for a book set against the early days of the First World War but want a plot that will maks you forget about war then this is a story you definitely need fo check out. I wilk admit there was a point where I was suspicious of all characters except for the main fmc! That is how good it was.
We are introduced to Alexandra who has recently lost her parents. To make matters worse the inheritance left by her parents is being controlled by her Uncle and the only way that hold will release is if she marries. Determined to take her life into her own hands she and a young man named Cameron decide to come up with a fake engagement in order to fool her Uncle.
The voyage back home ends up being filled with deception. Alexandra discovers there is more to her father's will that her Uncle is letting on. To make matters worse there are secrets of her parents past that are very skeptical. Will Alexandra and Cameron be able to solve these issues without losing their lives in the process?
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the ALC.
This was a bit of a mixed experience for me. While the story started off strong, I found myself losing some connection about halfway through. That said, there were still elements I appreciated, and I can see how it would resonate with the right reader.
The audiobook production was very well done. The narrator delivered a strong performance that kept me engaged, and the overall listening experience was enjoyable.
Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the advanced listener copy!
An Inheritance of Lies follows Alexandra as she navigates grief after losing her parents, facing a controlling uncle, and dealing with a desperate engagement to a stranger aboard the Lusitania. The story weaves a mix of romance, tension, and emotional healing.
The book's premise and timeline intrigued me, especially as it's historical fiction with romantic elements. I appreciated the tender chemistry between Alexandra and Cameron, which felt authentic and often tugged at my heartstrings. Alexandra's grief was portrayed in a raw, relatable way that added depth to both her character and the overall narrative.
However, I found the pacing to drag in places, and the uncle came off as more frustrating than intimidating. I also wished for stronger development of the side characters. Additionally, the book struggled to establish a clear identity, often shifting between romance, thriller, and historical fiction without fully committing to any one genre.
By the halfway point, I felt a disconnect from the story and characters. Nonetheless, I believe that readers who enjoy historical romance may enjoy this book!. The audiobook production was well-executed, but I would have preferred a male narrator for Cameron to add a little more life into his character.
Im so glad i had the opportunity to read this book. I’m not usually a historical fiction reader but I really enjoyed the plot and prose. The twists and turns were well placed and unexpected. Cameron is just the sweetest.
I absolutely toiled through this book. It just doesn’t know what it wants to be. A romance? A thriller? A mystery? A historical fiction? Yes to all, and that’s the problem. None of them quite work because the author doesn’t fully commit. Plus, Alex and Cameron on the Lusitania just reminded me of Jack and Rose on the Titanic. Big nope from this reader.
This advanced copy was sent to me by NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I had a hard time getting into the writing for this because I kept getting distracted by awkward word choices and sentence structures. As long as I made myself ignore the writing, it did manage to get me interested in the characters and plot. I grew to like Alexandra and Cameron, and I wanted to figure out what her uncle was up to. Once we got to the sinking, it kind of lost me again, when our main characters waste time going back to their cabins to gather documents instead of getting off the sinking ship already. I seriously doubt they would've had time after the torpedo hit to do all that running around, gathering stuff and having multiple showdowns with the bad guys before the ship went down.
Thank you to the publisher, the author, and NetGalley for providing a free review copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.
Recently I have found myself to be falling in love more and more with historical fiction, as well as mysteries and thrillers, and I admit... when I saw this was set around the famed R.M.S. Lusitania, I of course had to pick it up to check it out... as I have always been fascinated with the Lusitania and her illustrious history.
And oh my gosh, Rebecca A. Carter has far outdone herself with An Inheritance of Lies ... Sure, I may be easing into historical fiction more than I used to, but there is something about the way that Rebecca A. Carter writes that makes this novel seem so much more alive and so much more special than the typical historical fiction.
Before I even get into anything else, Rebecca has done a beyond-fantastic job in blending the historical elements into her novel... as everything from the city to its architecture, clothing, to the expected manners of women and men of the time... and to the famed R.M.S. Lusitania are all described in dazzling detail... bringing that much more life and allure to An Inheritance of Lies while also showing the author's clear adoration of the ship as well as this time period.
There is a stunning amount of detail about the R.M.S. Lusitania, and I felt so honored to be able to step aboard this magnificent ship and experience it in this book. Not only that, but to be able to LIVE... even through words... for just a moment on the magnificence of this cruiser was everything.
And let's not even get me started as to the magic of the characters that Rebecca A. Carter has created. Let's just say this... throw EVERYTHING you typically would expect in a historical fiction out the window. Because An Inheritance of Lies will catch you off guard in the best of ways and will bundle you up and sweep you away in the most beautiful fashion. Gone are the typical stereotypes that have become so frequent in many novels of this sort, replaced with a deep depth of emotion and a beautiful sense of power. There is something that is so relatable in our female main character Alix... and in the way that we are not "forced" to like her, per se... but more so act as a quiet... unseen companion on her journey of realizing herself and coming to her true self .... struggles and all...to be the woman that she wants to be without a man's control... this was what made An Inheritance of Lies for me, and it has swept into my number one historical fiction for 2026... a position that it so very deserves.
Being my first work from the desk of Rebecca A. Carter, I have to say that I was swept off my feet by its beauty, by its raw and powerful story, and by its well-researched and beautifully done setting. I did not know what to expect going in, and I did not expect something of such beauty... and one that will linger in the back of my mind for months to come.
I cannot wait to see what comes next, and I am highly looking forward to my next work from Rebecca. Thank you to Lake Union Publishing, Amazon Publishing, Netgalley and of course to the talented Rebecca A. Carter for this opportunity to read this novel in advanced. I am voluntarily leaving this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and the rest of my reviews can be found at: https://littlereapling.wixsite.com/fa....
Phenomenal Historical Fiction! And, it involves the Lusitania... so that gives it a whole other angle too!
Alexandra Benson (Alex) has just lost her parents. But, she will be OK. After all her parents drilled independence into her, and she is in law school in NYC in the year 1915... so, she will make it!
However, her long lost uncle arrives for the reading of the will, and Alex is STUNNED to find that her Father added a clause that she will NOT get the fortune that has been left to her, UNLESS she marries! This is NOT at all what her parents wanted for her, and so she is totally confused. And, to make it worse, her uncle is dragging her to England and plans to marry her off to someone he chooses for her!
So, in order to get ahead of this mess, she forms her own plans... to try to thwart off her uncle. But, she must travel to England with him on the ship, the Lusitania. And, as you may or may not know, that ship was doomed....
This was phenomenal in so many ways, and really kept me engaged and hanging on to every word! If you enjoy historical fiction, and a great story, please do not pass this one up!
Five glowing, raging, fiery, amazing stars for me!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The first to draw me to this story was of course the subject of a mystery romance being on the Lusitania. As a Titanic historical fan (it’s one of my Roman Empires) I of course was enticed!
This story started off with our FMC as she is mourning the loss of her parents. The story is set up beautifully with her sitting at the bar for a drink, the small intro of Cameron and then that pacing continuing on. Nothing felt too rushed, or too slow. I felt it was a “just right” at least for me.
I liked the chemistry between Alix and Cameron - the banter between them was perfection from the start. Alix is a very smart, strong minded, stubborn and a little sassy woman and Cameron was able to keep up with her and it showed at their relationship grew.
Now, historically, I know what happens on the Lusitania so that felt like a heart pounding anticipation - cause though you know that the boat sinks due to a torpedo hitting it - I was really interested in how these characters would play into the world. The mystery that Alix was unraveling that seemed to be never ending right up to the last page. This girl has been THROUGH IT!!! But the ending was a satisfying one. I was scared for a moment but recovered well! I like how the insert of Mr. Vanderbilt was inserted into the story for an accurate passenger of the Lusitania.
Man those White Star ships reaaaally know how to sink to the bottom of the ocean is a huge tragedy. Heart breaking truly.
But I loved this story. I felt like it was playing beautiful in my head with the descriptions, I was able to really immerse myself into the story. The action moment felt like it flowed in a way where I didn’t get lost in the chaos of it all. I think the moment (of what one could imagine) it was like in those roughly 20 minutes of the ship sinking was captured beautifully.
Alexandria is alone in the world, her parents are gone and she has no one. Thank goodness her father was a forward thinker, and left his millions to her, or so she thinks. When she attends the reading of her father's will with her uncle, a man she has never met who arrived shortly after their death from England she was relieved. At least now she wasn't alone, but he quickly began selling her parents things, and now shockingly it says he is in charge of her fortune until she marries! Marries!!!! It makes no sense, her father was letting her attend law school, she heard him say everything would be hers one day, so why now has the will been changed? Worse, her uncle is determined to return to England, a country on the brink of war. So, she does what any sensible lady would do. She finds herself a fake fiance! Now Alexandria and her fake fiance Cameron are aboard the Lusitania heading for England in Germany U-boat infested waters. She is determined to find out the truth about her uncle and the changed will while not falling in love with her soon to be husband. But, things are not what they seem, rumors of German spies on board are circulating through the boat, dangers lie around every corner, and Alexandria is beginning to wonder if she knows anything at all. This book was a fun read. I loved how head strong Alexandria was, not always a given when the time period is 1914. But her strong and determined spirit shine through the novel. Along with that it was heart breaking knowing the history of the Lusitania and I couldn't help but hold my breath to find out what would happen to my daring main characters! Equal parts historical fiction and mystery/thriller I loved every chapter. Spies, espionage, love, and chocolate cake what more could a reader want in a book?
An Inheritance of Lies follows Alexandra, a young woman reeling from a devastating loss—the death of her parents—while being harassed by her manipulative uncle, who schemes to gain control of her inheritance unless she marries. In a desperate attempt to escape his grasp, Alexandra becomes engaged to a stranger, and together they embark on a voyage to England aboard the RMS Lusitania to fulfill her uncle’s demands.
I enjoyed the chemistry between Alexandra and Cameron—it was both sizzling and heartwarming, filled with tenderness and genuine care. The suspense surrounding Alexandra’s dilemma with her uncle, both before and after boarding the Lusitania, added tension to the story. I also appreciated how real and relatable Alexandra’s grief felt, particularly in how she processed the loss of her parents.
While the premise and romance were engaging, a few elements pulled me out of the story. The pacing felt slow at times, and some of the uncle’s mannerisms and attitudes came across as exaggerated, making him more irritating than threatening. I also struggled to connect with most of the secondary characters, with the exception of Carlton, the professor aboard the Lusitania. A stronger balance between primary and secondary characters would have enriched the story.
Overall, the plot was engaging, the romance compelling, and the heroine bold and dynamic. If you enjoy historical romances with strong female leads and sizzling chemistry, this book may be an enjoyable read for you.
Thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
An Inheritance of Lies has an intriguing premise: after her parents’ death, a young woman discovers a marriage clause in their will that must be fulfilled before she can claim her inheritance. With her supposed uncle controlling her fate in the meantime, she arranges a fake engagement with a man willing to play the part in exchange for a share of the money. What begins as a convenient arrangement quickly spirals into something much more complicated when they’re forced to sail to England aboard the RMS Lusitania sinking—and secrets about her family begin to unravel.
As the story unfolds, she learns her uncle isn’t who he claims to be, and her family is entangled in a web of espionage. Amid the danger and deception, her relationship with her fake fiancé evolves into something real. The novel builds toward the dramatic sinking of the Lusitania, culminating in a tidy, adventurous happily-ever-after.
I really wanted to love this one, but it felt like it was trying to do too much at once. Between the inheritance plot, fake engagement trope, espionage storyline, and historical disaster backdrop, the narrative sometimes felt disjointed rather than cohesive. The romance, which should have been the emotional anchor, didn’t quite land for me either.
That said, the writing style is strong and immersive, with a voice that evokes an old Hollywood charm. The narration (if you’re listening to the audiobook) is particularly phenomenal and adds a lot to the overall experience.
Overall, it’s an enjoyable read with a lot of interesting elements—it just didn’t come together in a way that delivered the emotional impact I was hoping for.

Received this through Netgalley as an audiobook and was looking forward to giving it a go as I really enjoy historical fiction.
The audiobook itself was an enjoyable listen but there could have been slightly more dramatic reading to really react to some events that were happening. My review isn't based on the audiobook itself though.
The title of this book might make it come as no surprise that everything isn't quite as it seems for our FMC (Alexandra) when they go to receive their parents inheritance. Turns out that isn't just receiving the inheritance that involves a whole web of lies but even .
As the story progresses it becomes increasing tense and puts you more and more on the edge of your seat as you start to worry whether let alone anything else.
There were a few moments of this story where I feel it could have packed more of an emotional punch or provided a few extra descriptions, especially in the last chapter or two, but despite all that it was still a well rounded story.
If you're into fake relationships/marriage tropes combined with a small amount of history and feminism discussion then it's worth considering.
When Alexandra Benson’s parents perish suddenly in a car accident, she’s stunned to learn her father’s will requires her to marry before she can access her inheritance. Her suspicions deepen when the document appears to have been altered, and with her overbearing uncle Nigel determined to take her back to England, Alex makes a bold move: she hires a fake husband.
Cameron Asher agrees to the arrangement—money now, divorce later—but as they set sail aboard the Lusitania with her uncle, Alex realizes the danger runs far deeper than a questionable will. Trapped at sea with a cast of secrets and shifting loyalties, she begins to understand that her inheritance may cost far more than she expected. And as the threat of a German attack looms, the stakes become deadly.
An Inheritance of Lies delivers the tension of a classic locked-room mystery on a grand, perilous scale. With a touch of romance, a ship full of suspects, and twists that keep coming until the final pages, it’s an atmospheric read where not everyone will make it off the boat alive.
Thank you to NetGalley, Brilliance Audio, and author Rebecca A. Carter for the advanced copy of the audiobook. An Inheritance of Lies is out on May 5th. All opinions are my own.
I'm giving my own book a review because I simply love it. It's the kind of story I always wanted to read. This book was and is a work of love. It saved me in so many ways. An Inheritance of Lies (previously known as Beautiful Gilded Lies and 1915wip) came to me when I was at my lowest. Back then I was still querying. Pouring my soul into this story saved my sanity. And it saved me from giving up on writing. I wrote it, unaware of how it would change my life. This story fixed my heart with its banter, the characters, the lightheartedness, and also the sad and tragic parts. Alix and I both became orphans at an age when we supposedly needed to "get over it" quickly and efficiently. Seeing my grief through her eyes was cathartic. Seeing her overcome challenges and raising from her own ashes like I did once upon a time was also as cathartic. Whether this book provides laughter, or tears, or fun, or simply just a moment of escape (or if you didn't like it! That's fine too!!) I'm so thankful you got to read it. It's been three years since I first typed the first word. More than a decade after I started writing. It's my dream come true.
Alix and Cameron have been living for so long in my head and now it is my pleasure to share them with you.
I was drawn to An Inheritance of Lies due to the image of a great ocean liner (which I find fascinating), and the promise of WWI historical fiction. From the first page I was completely drawn in to this story of loss, espionage, danger, and passion.
Carter compellingly narrows in from the war playing out on the global stage, to following a group of players. It feels intimate, and heightens the sense of threat and tension. The story ebbs and flows between history, romance, mystery, and thriller, and Carter manages the balance of plausibility and fiction well.
I particularly loved the scenes on the Lusitania, and heart racing final moments before the conclusion. Alexandra and Cameron’s was endearing, and I loved the twists around how it came to be.
The audio narration was excellent. It perfectly captured the emotional tension and guardedness of all the characters, and I loved the way Alexandra’s clipped tone evolved as her relationship with Cameron developed. By the end, I’d forgotten I was listening, fully immersed in the story.
I’d recommend for anyone looking for a fast paced and compelling historical fiction with a dash of romance and intrigue.
Thank you to the publisher for an advance copy of this book. Opinions expressed are my own.
This book left me with very mixed feelings. It started strong, and had an intriguing plot, but about half way through it became too unrealistic to be considered historical fiction, and towards the end it became almost farcical. Alexandra Benson is mourning the sudden death of her parents. She is however, far from destitute with an enormous fortune to inherit. Her Uncle has her living in a hotel in New York having sold the family home there, and is insisting Alexandra return to England with him. The year is 1915 and war is erupting making the voyage risky. On top of this, Alexandra has learned to inherit her parents fortune she must first marry. From there the plot takes many turns and to cap it all off, the Lusitania, on which they make their voyage to England is torpedoed. While most on board are frantically trying to board life boats, Alexandra makes a convoluted trip through the ship to secure important documents. This just did not ring true, and that a wealthy heiress would have the wit and strength to fight off an enemy multiple times beggared belief. Overall an intriguing plot, but the delivery fell away as the story progressed. For me 2.5 stars rounded up to 3. Thank you Netgalley and Lake Union Press for the opportunity to read this digital ARC.
I have been wanting to read more historical fiction so I decide to give this book a try. Very glad to say that it does not disappoint!
While I wasn't particularly familiar with the settings of AIOL, the immersive writing made it easy to follow and imagine. Everything from the dialogues to descriptions about the surroundings is convincing and detailed, leaving little room for confusion. I also appreciate the empathetic glimpses of RMS Lusitania and especially its passengers throughout the book, so much so that its inevitable end devastated me even though I saw it coming.
The other highlights of the book are the relationship between Alix and Cameron and Alix's entanglement with espionage, both of which I think are well-executed. The chemistry between the couple is *chef's kiss*. I found myself giggling to their banter, and I was at the edge of my seat whenever they go on their risky expeditions behind the antagonists' backs. I also did not expect to grow fond of two side characters I previously despised (love that when this happens. I'm serious).
The impression that this book left on me was similar to how I felt after watching Titanic in the 90’s. This is not a copy cat by any means, but there are a lot of parallels.
Our young heiress is forced to board the Lusitania during wartime with an estranged and unyielding Uncle. With little power in the world as a young, unmarried orphan, she has no choice but to follow her appointed guardian on a dangerous sea voyage to England where he plans to find her a husband of his own choosing. I liked the main character, Alexandra. She was young but she was not pliable or naive, she didn’t cower…she schemed. The air is all mystery while we are uncovering the truth behind Alexandras parents last will and testament as well as why this Uncle feels so dubious. We also get a love subplot that was nicely done, I enjoyed the dynamic between Alexandra and her pretend fiancé Cameron and all the revelations that came with their relationship.
Historical fiction with mystery, twists, schemes, a dash of love and a few bursts of action and excitement. 4.25 Stars
Thank you NetGalley for this arc in exchange for my honest feedback.
War is coming. Can they survive it and each other.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for providing me with this complimentary copy of the book. Opinions expressed in this book are completely my own.
I loved this book!! Well written, good story and a nice bit of romance mixed in. This book held me captive in the best way. The middle did get a bit sluggish but I think that was more on my mood than the book. I loved the way the story proceeded and how the writer made every word count. The words weren't just there to tell a story - they were there to be impactful. They were there to make a lasting impression, they made more sense as the story proceeded and lastly they bound the whole book together, from title to acknowledgements.
This book is set in a very hard time in history and the circumstances that the book is set in are serious. This must be taken into account by readers as it could be upsetting to some people.
Set during WWI and featuring the sinking of the Lusitania, this book truly has it all: a fake romance, espionage and deception, high‑stakes adventure, gripping drama, and a satisfying happy ending.
I really enjoyed this story, and it stood out from other wartime dramas I’ve read. The dynamic between Alexandra and Cameron was especially compelling—well written, full of tension, and rich with chemistry.
I guessed one of the twists before the characters even set sail, but the second reveal, which comes mid‑voyage, genuinely surprised me. I should have seen it coming, but it was executed so well that I didn’t mind being caught off‑guard. The section depicting the sinking of the Lusitania was particularly vivid and skillfully written.
Overall, this was an engaging read, and I’d happily recommend it to anyone looking for a historical romance with a touch of drama.
Interesting historical fiction/ romance read involving a gamble to achieve an inheritance and thwart espionage. It’s 1915 and Alexandra Benson is the heiress. Her parents were tragically killed but her inheritance is entrusted to her uncle until she marries. She finds mysterious stranger to lose as her fiancé and then stumbles unto a screen about her father’s will that leads her to need to go to Germany. She and her “fiancé” (Cameron) embark on the Lusitania to make that journey but it’s WWI and Germany has told the world they would sink any ship carrying aid to their enemies. Uncovering a dubious plot against Britain as well as her uncle’s treachery, Alexandra and Cameron are able to survive - but you to find out how you have to read the book vid line up thank NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for allowing me to read this ARC.
I love historical fiction. I love anything nautical. Throw in espionage? This book is an absolute banger.
Alix is SUCH a likable character. She’s not the typical forced, overly feisty heroine you see everywhere. I genuinely loved every part of her. She’s feminine, but she’s not just a damsel waiting to be rescued—she forges her own path, takes control of her life, and gets sh*t done.
And Cameron… my goodness. I fell for him the same way Alix does—completely. The way he’s written and the chemistry between them—I could perfectly envision every look and conversation. Their dynamic felt so real and engaging. Let’s just say… I want a Cameron too.
Also—if this isn’t the start of a spy series, I will be genuinely upset. I need more of this world, these characters, and this energy.
The atmosphere was so rich and immersive, and I loved how the story blended mystery, romance, and that heavy historical backdrop with the RMS Lusitania looming in the distance. The marriage of convenience trope was everything I wanted it to be, and the shady uncle storyline added such a fun layer of tension and drama. I was side-eyeing more than one character the entire time, and there was a twist I absolutely did not see coming. Alexandra’s journey was so compelling to watch as she navigated family secrets, societal expectations, and her own growing independence. It all felt so vivid and emotional. And the ending delivered with a happily ever after that left me smiling. This was such a beautifully done, atmospheric read that I’m really glad I picked up.
I received a copy of the audio book from the publisher: these thoughts are my own!
The Inheritance of Lies by Rebecca Carter was everything I didn’t know I needed. Imagine a cross between a spy novel and Titanic—full of espionage, suspense, romance, and enough drama to keep you turning pages long past bedtime.
This was the perfect slump-buster book. From the very beginning, I was completely invested in the mystery and intrigue, but what really made it shine was how seamlessly the love story and historical setting were woven into the plot. Every chapter left me wanting just one more, and before I knew it, I had flown through the entire book.
Historical fiction is quickly becoming one of my favorite genres, and books like this are exactly why. It delivered action, emotion, secrets, and unforgettable characters all in one package.
An easy 5 stars from me. Rebecca Carter, please write more books—I need another one immediately!
