A thriller set on the upscale edges of the fashion scene, mixing domestic thrill with the horror of freelance work and the gig economy (which was my main takeaway tbh😅).

Premise - in Paris, glamorous divorcee Cécile Duval hires young American personal stylist, Nina Berry, to give her a glow up. But she isn’t after a new look. She’s after revenge.

Nina arrives in Paris with her fiance, Jean, and immediately sets about befriending her client. Nina is naive to what’s in store, but so is Cécile as the line between predator and prey disappears.

This is twisty, full of unlikable characters (intentionally, which I enjoy in my thrillers), and the international setting added a bit of glamor and fun. Seriously, though— how scary is it being a freelancer and taking gigs from any old person with an internet connection?💀

I don’t want to say too much, because spoilers on this one would spoil the fun, but I called the baddie right away.

Overall: a solid thriller that touches on some serious real life issues.

I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Caroline Hewitt and Emily Lawrence. I’m not sure which was reading which, but I strongly preferred Cecile’s narrator to Nina’s, which was overly dramatized for my tastes (not everyone’s!).

Thanks, NetGalley and Brilliance publishing, for the audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Last Looks by Cape Callahan, Camille who is going by Cecile for the purposes of her newest mission. Her husband recently died but before he did after rounds of in vitro fertilization that failed he tells her about another woman and the next thing she knows he jumps off the balcony and is dead. So “Cecile“ tracks down who she believes is ATN’s mistress and she’s an influencer and fashion stylist so she hires her and flies are out to Paris from New York. Cecile’s plan is to take Nina out so she can have a fatal accident but it seems every time the chance arises something else happens that thwarts the attempt so she’s forced to continue to pretend to like Nina. This whole time Nina is nothing but kind and sweet to Cecile She’s like a cheerleader in her corner only wanting her to feel and look her best Nina is also there with her fiancé Jean. He works there quarterly throughout the year and when he tells her about a dinner with his colleagues Nina asked if she could invite Cecile something Jean is totally against It’s at this dinner while Nina is still trying to play matchmaker that she shows Cecile‘s pictures and finds out Cecile isn’t who she’s been telling Nina she is but rather the black widow who most of France believes killed her husband although the police found no evidence of that. Another Parisian who believes Cecile is guilty is name Chris and wants he figures out what she’s trying to do to Nina he essentially pops up at every inopportune moment and spoils Camille‘s plans. soon Camille is even dragging Jean into her plot for revenge but she will live to regret it. Nina is the true innocent and all of this because although I didn’t mention that she’s carrying jeans baby and he acts as if they can’t have rough sex because she’s pregnant she can’t do overly exerting exercises and so much more he really is someone that would absolutely get on my nerves but either way I found this to be a very entertaining book I know other reviewers mention the brand name placement in the book but that was just at the beginning and that didn’t bother me at all I don’t know why that bothers so many people because I’ve read this before in other books I mean it was apropos to the story. I also want to mention Nina gives real and really great fashion advice for those on the budget and those just getting started on their wardrobe career and I found those segments to be Uber entertaining and quite helpful. I definitely would recommend this book it is thrilling and has an ending that no one can say they guessed it because I don’t know how they could it was so good such a great read and such a great ending there were times I thought Nina could’ve been a little bit smarter to Camille a.k.a. Cecile was a little bit strange but either way all in all it’s a great read. #NetGalley, #TheBlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview,

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Cecile takes revenge way too far in this fun fashionable thriller. Nina has been commissioned to the fashion capital of the world for a wealthy client. What she doesn’t know is that everything about this work trip was carefully orchestrated to lure her in and make sure she doesn't make it back to America.

I read this one in a day and had a lot of fun with it. I enjoyed the back and forth between the 2 females more than I enjoyed the twist and I think that was on purpose. Definitely something I will enjoy discussing with friends when they read the book.

Last Looks by Cate Holahan. Thanks to booksparks and the author for the gifted copies ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nina Berry just got a new styling job in Paris for the newly divorced Cécile Duval. But Cécile is not who she says she is and has revenge in mind.

I like stories like this where the reader has much more intel than the main character. As a dual perspective, we’re privy from the very beginning to Cécile’s intent and we’re helpless as we watch her getting closer and closer to her goal. It’s very tense to read, especially as the chapters and tenses go back and forth. At some point that tension shifts, there’s some twists, and it becomes quite intense and exciting.

“Amazing how a taste of blood increases the appetite for violence.”

Read if you like:
-Dual perspectives
-Revenge stories
-Fashion and styling
-French settings

Last Looks comes out 10/20.

This book was not for me: I found it very superficial. All the super expensive clothing and jewelry got boring after a while, all the high-end fashion names made me yawn and the mystery itself was very easy to figure out, as was the ending.

Cécile hires Nina, an American stylist, to help her reinvent herself after her divorce. The catch? Cécile believes Nina was her ex-husband’s mistress and has secretly brought her to Paris with revenge in mind. Of course, things aren’t quite what they seem.

I had a fun time with this one! Cécile had her mind made up about Nina, whether she had the right woman or not. That said, I also understood why her anger made her act the way she did, especially knowing what her husband had actually done. And Nina's situation with her fiancé was another layer I wasn't expecting.

It turned out to be less about the revenge itself and more about secrets, assumptions, complicated relationships, and two women who unexpectedly find something neither of them was looking for. It was fast-paced, suspenseful, and fun!

Thank you so much to Book Sparks & Cate Holahan for the #gifted arc copy! All opinions are my own.

Thank you so much to NetGalley for this ARC!

"Last Looks" by Cate Holahan follows two women, stylist Nina and client Cecile, as Cecile hides behind a fake identity with the intention of taking revenge on Nina for participating in an affair with her late husband. It's a cat and mouse game that incorporates the world of high end fashion and style into a tense thriller, and is a great next read for fans of authors like Jeneva Rose and Freida McFadden.

I thought this book had a generally good quality of writing, and found it more descriptive and artful than many other novels in the thriller genre. I am personally not at all knowledgeable about the world of fashion or stylists, and I do think that this novel would especially appeal to readers with an interest in those subjects.

I thought there was a good blend of both predictable and unpredictable elements, making the twists more compelling. I don't think twists need to be completely out of the blue to be enjoyable, and I think this book does a good job of balancing that. I also feel that this book doesn't fall into the trap of characters making ridiculous choices just to keep the plot moving - many times the characters genuinely make a good or smart choice, which makes the situation seem all that more claustrophobic, and that increases exponentially as we get closer to the climax of the novel.

That being said, I do feel like it was a bit difficult for me to get into the characters or relate to them. The story seems to lean towards telling you who they are instead of showing you as much through their actions, which leads to their characters feeling forced - for example. one character is point blank described as "male centered" while another is labeled the "girl's girl," and still another described as "a misogynist." In general, there's a lot of over-explaining that goes on, heavily elaborating on why a character chooses any and every action, even small ones. I think that the characters and the story can stand on their own without having to hammer in every aspect of it, and that most readers can understand why the characters are making the choices they're making without it being spelled out.

There's also an aspect of the author trying to incorporate Gen Z slang, internet memes, and pop culture. It ends up feeling overdone at times, and since the characters are supposed to be millennial/Gen X (as far as I can tell), this also doesn't really fit in smoothly with who the characters are supposed to be. I think it's intended to appeal to a younger audience or one that spends a lot of time on social media, but ends up coming across as the "hey fellow kids!" trope.

As far as the general themes of the story, the novel is a fun thriller take on how some women can choose to center their lives around men, with some strong commentary on women's bodily autonomy. The writing does hit you over the head with this a lot of the time, and I think it could have made its point well with the same plot and characters but with less over-explanation. The readers can be trusted to figure out what the author is trying to say - in an age where critical thinking and media literacy is on a downswing, I think authors should continue to write stories that provide chances for readers to exercise that muscle, rather than folding to short attention spans by spelling everything out.

If you need a fun book to just fall into and use to escape from everyday life, you need to check this one out! Cécile is in her late forties, has just lost her husband, and hires Nina, an American stylist in her twenties, to help her make over her life. Nina believes Cécile is wealthy with a circle of friends who will be the perfect prospective clients to really put Nina’s work on the map. Cécile believes Nina had an affair with her husband, and she’s out for revenge. The reader finds out early on that Cécile is totally wrong about Nina, who’s actually a really good person and the opposite of everything Cécile thinks she is.

So you think Cécile’s the villain and shouldn’t get away with what she’s trying to do to Nina, but for some reason, you don’t. Her husband did have an affair, so you can empathize with her, but really, you’d think she'd be a little more thorough in her research to be sure she had the right person! So Nina keeps trying to build Cécile up and show her she’s worth the makeover, and Cécile can’t help but find herself liking Nina more and losing the urge to get rid of her. Throw in Nina’s controlling fiancé, whom she’s completely blind to, and it’s just one big mess of misunderstandings.

If you’re into style and fashion, you’ll probably get a lot more of the references than I did because I’m totally not like that. But I still enjoyed reading about style icons like Chanel and the famous landmarks of Paris. I’ve loved this author since I discovered her from the Young Rich Widows series, and her stories are just so binge-worthy and delicious. And I don’t use words like that, so that’s how you know I’m a fan!

My thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the free advanced reading copy of this book.

Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for the advance copy of Last Looks by Cate Holahan.

The premise of this one immediately caught my attention. A woman inviting the person she believes ruined her marriage to Paris under the disguise of a dream styling job? I was expecting a twisty psychological thriller full of revenge, manipulation, and secrets.

While I liked the idea behind the story, it took me a while to really get invested. The first half moved slower than I expected, and I never felt fully connected to either of the main characters. I kept waiting for that moment where I couldn't stop turning the pages, but it didn't happen until much later in the book.

The story definitely picks up in the second half, and I liked that it became more unpredictable as new secrets came to light. There were a few twists I didn't see coming, and I appreciated that the story didn't take the most obvious path. I also enjoyed the Paris setting, which added a fun backdrop and gave the book a different feel from a typical domestic thriller.

For me, though, the characters were what held this one back. I never became fully invested in what happened to them, so even when the suspense increased, the emotional payoff wasn't quite there.

Overall, this is a solid psychological thriller with revenge, deception, and plenty of twists. It didn't completely win me over, but I think readers who enjoy slower-burning suspense with complicated relationships and unreliable characters will likely enjoy it more than I did.

Cécile Duval is a recent Divorcee who is looking for a makeover. She requests the help of Stylist Nina Berry to glam up her wardrobe. What Nina doesn’t know, is that Cécile already knows her, and it’s not for the right reasons.

Thank you to the publisher, Thomas and Mercer, and to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

I went into this expecting lush undertones, a game of cat and mouse and a rich eerie atmosphere. I didn’t really get that. The level of detail that went into brands, trends and surgery did not extend to the thriller plot itself. I have a negative view of all those things, so for brands to be continually name dropped like I should be impressed didn’t do anything for me.

I didn’t really learn who Nina or Cécile were. There were some moments where they told me face on, who they thought they were, but their actions didn’t show that. I saw them both as very generic and sadly a bit bland.

For moments between life and death, I felt there was no tension or raised stakes. It was very one note the entire way through.

In the final moments I felt it was so rushed to try and force a reaction from me, but as I felt nothing for the characters that didn’t pay off.

I really wanted to love this, but unfortunately it just didn’t work for me. Plot or character wise.

I received Last Looks by Cate Holahan as an ARC. Thank you to Cate Holahan, Thomas & Mercer, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Last Looks follows Nina Berry, an up-and-coming personal stylist who travels to Paris after being hired by the wealthy and recently divorced Cécile Duval. From the outside, it seems like a dream opportunity. But Cécile believes Nina was her husband’s mistress and has no interest in a makeover—she wants revenge. As the two women grow closer, secrets begin to surface, and the line between predator and prey becomes increasingly blurred.

This was my first book by Cate Holahan, and overall I enjoyed it. The dual POVs kept the story moving and made it a quick, engaging read. The Paris setting added an extra layer of charm, and I could easily see this story being adapted into a movie.

That being said, I was hoping for a bigger twist. While the story was entertaining, it almost felt like two separate stories woven together rather than one cohesive thriller. Because of that, the payoff wasn’t quite as impactful as I had hoped. I was initially leaning toward a 4-star rating, but the ending and overall execution brought it down slightly for me.

Rating: 3⭐

This was definitely a rollercoaster of emotions. This wasn't at all what I expected when I read the blurb.
I expected the book to only focus on Cécile, her master plan to get revenge on her husband's mistress and I expected it to show her as smart/cunning with a full proof plan that had no holes or whatever. But unfortunately I don't think Cécile was smart at all, her initial plan of cornering Nina all felt like something she'd planned that morning rather than a master plan she'd been putting together for months.
This kinda confused me and just made me think she's dumb af although she kept saying how smart she thought she was being.

Things really picked up towards the end and I was at the edge of my seat for most of it. The story went in a different direction and the ending was pretty satisfying.

I had fun reading this, the writing was good and cause I don't speak French I felt like Nina at some points, just sitting there as others had a conversation around her. But luckily for me Google translate is easily accessible lol.
I might have to look into more books by this author.

Though listed as a thriller, this is just as much a story about female friendships as it is a popcorn thriller.

While the initial selling point was the thriller plot line - Cecile wanting revenge on her husband’s mistress - I actually found the Cecile and Nina interactions to be the more interesting storyline. Watching what started as Cecile messing with Nina slowly turn into a slightly-strange friendship was so sweet.

It did take me time to get into this book, likely because I thought it was meant to follow a more predictable thriller storyline, and I found the first part almost clumsy in Cecile’s attempts to murder Nina. That said, I’m glad I stayed with it since the second half brought the story together in a more cohesive and thoughtful way.

Give a read if you like thrillers, especially focused on deceptions and revenge, but also enjoy stories that are heavy handed on the importance of being a girls’ girl and the right of a pregnant woman to make decisions for herself and her baby.

Nina Berry is an ambitious, up-and-coming stylist in New York City. When she lands a dream client—Cécile Duval, a wealthy, recent divorcee it seems like the career-making opportunity Nina has been working toward. Cécile hires Nina for a complete personal makeover, and Nina flies to Paris alongside her fiancé to fulfill the contract. Once again dream job or so she hoped

Cécile isn't interested in a new wardrobe however. She is convinced that Nina was her ex-husband's mistress and the reason her marriage dissolved. She intends to dismantle Nina's "Instagram-perfect" life and exact cold-blooded revenge. But Nina is not as naive or helpless as she appears.

It was interesting seeing Obsession with Image vs. Reality. I have never been too influenced by social media at least fashion and makeup but I can see how people can get drawn in. This book examines how digital facades, social media, and curated ‘perfection’ can create toxic motives. With two untrustworthy MC’s it is unclear who is truly the predator and who is the prey.

Very easy to get into and stay hooked until the end.

Thank you NetGalley for my ARC of Last Looks. I’m giving this review honestly and voluntarily.

The premise of this book was so promising, sounding like a woman scorned, cat-and-mouse revenge plot. Unfortunately, it fell flat. Time that should have been spent on character development was instead spent discussing designer brands, fashion advice, and Paris scenery. This made the first half of the book drag. I also felt like I didn’t know either of the main characters well enough to love them or hate them. We were told who they were instead of shown and their actions didn’t match their descriptions, which made neither of them particularly likable. Cecile was made out to be this mastermind behind the revenge plot, when her actions were anything but smart and well thought-out. The big twist towards the end felt contrived and unrealistic. The story jumped the shark at that point and continued jumping the shark to its predictable ending.

I really wanted to love this one but had to force myself to finish it.

This is a solid thriller wherein a woman seeks revenge against the younger woman her husband had an affair with.

Cecile Duval has been painted as a Black Widow by the press after her husband fell from their 4th story balcony after a drunken fight. People believe that she pushed him but the truth is messier and sadder.

Stylist Nina Berry, is ambitious and wants to expand her client list with some wealthy Europeans, all she needs is one satisfied client who will tell all her rich friends about Nina’s talents. And Nina does have a very good eye for fashion and she genuinely wants her clients to look and feel their best.

When they meet in Paris is it the start of a beautiful relationship or does the Black Widow strike again?

The final chapter felt a bit rushed, one minute there’s blood everywhere and then suddenly it’s several weeks later and we’re shoe shopping and all the loose ends are neatly tied without really learning how we got from a to b.

What a strange, chaotic read.

Cecile is completely consumed by revenge after convincing herself that her late husband had an affair with Nina. She becomes determined to kill her… except she is absolutely terrible at murder. Every single attempt goes wrong.

Meanwhile, Nina is dealing with something far more sinister. Her boyfriend has deliberately trapped her into a pregnancy and then tries to kidnap her for two months so that she will no longer be able to terminate it.

In all of Cecile’s lunacy and obsession with getting revenge on Nina, she actually ends up rescuing her.

Somehow, Cecile goes from would-be murderer to Nina’s unlikely hero and, dare I say it, a complete girls-girl.

What a bizarre turnaround.

This was dark, twisted, funny in the strangest places and completely unpredictable. I genuinely did not expect the story to end up where it did.
3.9⭐ — chaotic, strange and ridiculously entertaining.

This was an interesting read, in that it didn’t go where I was expecting when I started. It is the story of a wealthy French widow who lures the woman she believes to be her ex-husband’s lover into a job with the intent of exacting revenge. As the story evolves, more of their lives becomes evident, and the direction of the story changes. Characters’ roles are anltered and personalities are exposed.
I did find some elements of the story to be a little contrived, and situations unlikely. It was also difficult to like most of the characters, but in spite of that, it was still an entertaining read that maintained my interest.

Last Looks was an entertaining psychological thriller that kept me hooked with its mix of revenge, secrets, and shifting loyalties. The Paris setting added plenty of glamour, while the tension between the characters kept me guessing about who could actually be trusted.

I especially enjoyed how Cate Holahan gradually revealed new layers to the story without giving away too much too soon. The characters were flawed and interesting, and several twists caught me by surprise.

If you enjoy character driven thrillers with deception, suspense, and a touch of luxury, Last Looks is definitely worth picking up.

This book serves as an indulgent look into a woman scorned. Falling from the great heights of wealthy socialite to social pariah after a very abrupt ending to a struggling marriage would make anyone a bit unhinged. I was all in until about 70% and it all came crashing down into a fever dream. Act three was wild is all I can say.

I did not enjoy this book at all. I thought the mystery was very very easy to put together, and the "thriller" parts weren't very thrilling at all. I thought the character of Nina was an idiot. You never really get to know the characters at all - everything is VERY superficial. Not recommended.

I really wanted to enjoy this book because the premise sounded so intriguing. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work for me. As the story progressed, the events became increasingly far-fetched and extremely unbelievable. I found myself questioning the characters’ decisions and struggling to take many of the situations seriously. Instead of being caught up in the suspense and twists, I was distracted by how unrealistic everything felt. Overall, this one was a disappointment and just missed the mark for me.

This was a fun read! I had the privilege of being an ALC reader and really enjoyed the fancy French feel of the story along with the unhinged revenge plot. While initially I had the impression that the “revenge” in question was superficial and impulsive, as the story goes on, we end up learning much more about the characters, giving them depth that they may not have had at first glance. The twists kept things fresh and interesting.

A mystery/thriller of its finest, well written and thought out.
I liked the fmc and her plotting is top notch.
Cecile is a divorced woman in her fourties and she's driven by revenge. Her competition, Nina, has no clue and like a fly she gets lured into Cecile's trap.

I found the cat-and-mouse games between Cécile and Nina interesting. There were several moments of true suspense. The last part of the novel, while not unforeseeable, adds to the redemption arc for one of the women. Unfortunately, I could not get through this book. Every time I picked it up, I’d get a few pages before I would want to read something else. Maybe it felt too ridiculous? Maybe there wasn’t enough revealed? I just found Celine to be too wild of a character to believe, and ultimately, after trying to read it over a couple months, I just don’t want to continue.

Not my favorite of Cate Holahan’s but it’s still a very twisty thriller. The story becomes something unexpected around 70 % of the way through so prepare to be surprised. Thanks NetGalley for the ARC.

*Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC*

This lil twisted-sister of a novel was a fun, quick read. If you’re a Francophile with a love of fashion, real housewives, unhinged antihero’s, and KARMA, this book is for you!
