MY EX AND OTHER MONSTERS is a book that takes a fun premise and weaves a great story out of it.
The premise is just so much fun! The book takes this seemingly bonkers premise and runs with it, spinning it into a super fun contemporary romance with a dash of magic. If you love someone (romantically), then they turn into a monster. It means the stakes of falling in love are enormous and so Indie has a believable reason to keep her crushes at emotional arms length. But, of course, as a reader, you know she is going to fall fully in love so you want her to break the curse in time.
The fact that the boy she's falling in love with is the son of the man who cursed her mum adds more tension - and sets up the third act break up well. You know that he has to find out at some point, and you know what she's doing is wrong, but you also understand it well - and know a delicious reckoning is coming over it.
I really liked how the book used the set up to discuss the ways that men can lash out because a woman turns them down. The curse is literally a cycle of violence perpetuated because parts of society have told men that women must like them and can be coerced into relationships as if that was fine. This idea plays out through a few different characters and I really appreciated that one had realised what was going on and taken steps to change his behaviour. It shows that it's a breakable cycle - and that the onus is not on women to break it.
In all, this was a really fun book that I gulped down.

I LOVED this. I felt really drawn into Indie's plight to end the curse ruining her life. The dynamics and one liners were priceless - had me simultaneously laughing and on edge for what might come next! I couldn't put it down...
