SHE TELLS SECRETS, HE TELLS LIES There are plenty of formidable people in Washington, D.C., though possibly none more so than me. I’m not sitting in the White House, nor have an office in the Capitol building. I’m not affiliated with the three branches of the US government whatsoever. But I’m acquainted with the players who are—intimately. I know them better than they know themselves. Same with the hot shots that make up corporate America and the moguls of Silicon Valley. You see, I’m a keeper of secrets, of sensitive information. I pocket the whispers in the dark, saving them for a rainy day. It makes me the most powerful woman in town, but it also makes me the most dangerous, the most feared; and therefore, the most hunted. Unfortunately for the elite ladies and gentlemen of the upper echelon, they seem to have underestimated the bite force of an apex predator who’s been backed into a corner. Perhaps it’s time the players on this country’s board get bitten, and I won’t let anyone stand in my way—no matter how handsome he is. He’s a complication I simply can’t afford.
B.H. Eastwood writes scorching hot romances that will have you on the edge of your seat and clutching your pearls. She lives in the southern United States with her husband and their aged Golden Retriever.
When she’s not obsessively spilling her brain onto the page, you can find her banging her head at a metal show until she’s nearly concussed or curled up with a book, preferably on a gloomy day.
Although, no matter where she is or what she’s doing, you can rest assured that she’s thinking about the precious stories smoldering in her brain.
I knew I was in trouble the moment Genevieve stepped onto the page because this woman has a chokehold on anyone who reads her.
Genevieve is sharp, ruthless, and brilliant, running her secret-filled empire with more power than the men who fear her. Then Ford appears, and the spark between them hits immediately. He pulls emotions out of her she buried years ago, and their chemistry is intense in a way that feels both dangerous and irresistible.
As the story unfolds, the tension only tightens. Ford is undercover, fighting the pull he feels toward her while trying to do his job, and Genevieve challenges him at every turn. Their scenes together are loaded with heat, control, and a growing emotional connection that sneaks up on both of them. The political secrets, the games of power, and the way they test each other make the plot impossible to look away from.
When the lies and betrayals finally crack open, everything crashes fast, and the fallout is gripping. The twists are sharp, the emotions land hard, and their bond somehow feels even stronger through the chaos.
This book is addictive, seductive, and packed with tension that keeps you holding your breath. I could not put it down.

Many thanks to B.H. Eastwood & The Smuthood for providing this Advanced Reader Copy. All opinions expressed are entirely my own. ✨
The entirety of this book (and this review) is a secret 🤫 okay, not really.. but I don’t want to say too much. I don’t want to give away all the secrets, lies, and tales that B.H. Eastwood spins up in ASAAL, because there are many.
Genevieve is a Madam. She’s made her money by dominating high society members of her club, hoarding their secrets, and running a successful BDSM matchmaking business. She quite literally crawled her way to the top, and the only person she trusts is herself.
Until a seemingly random meetup with a man named Ford at a new bar in town, and now he’s got her feeling things she’s hasn’t felt in 14 years.. and she’s not sure why. There’s a pull there, electricity, but she’s never felt like this before.. what is it about him that has her intrigued? 👀
So when Ford asks her to teach him how to unleash his inner dominant, Gen is convinced she’s going crazy when she accepts. Only it won’t be her that he will be dominating. Much to both of their dismay.
When push comes to shove and secrets are revealed.. can what she feels for Ford overcome everything she’s taught herself to know? Only time will tell.
These two were so much fun, and I LOVE B.H’s writing. I love how she sets a scene, and her FMCs are ALWAYS the best. The Gen Effect™️ (coining that term) is seriously addictive. This woman is BAD ASS, and has me convinced I should be running for prime minister of Canada at this point 😅 she is the ULTIMATE girl crush FMC. I’m addicted to her, to her personality, and she’s motivated me to be a true baddie in life.. and in the bedroom. I’m a changed woman 😂
Ford is mysterious, sexy, secretive, and just downright billionaire daddy vibes.. and who doesn’t love a strong love match like the one these two share? I couldn’t put this book down. Each chapter is chock full of spice, emotion, and surprises that you didn’t see coming.
Overall, I think almost everyone will enjoy this book. There’s nothing to dislike about it. I only wish there was more (penetrative) spice. Although that bonus scene really did whet my whistle ☺️
❤️🔥 Badass FMC 🖤 Billionaire x Millionaire ❤️🔥 Revenge 🖤 Second Chance (sort of) ❤️🔥 Ex-Military Man 🖤 Sir x Madam ❤️🔥 Secrets & Lies 🖤 “On Your Knees” ❤️🔥 She Teaches Him
I have genuinely never read anything like this before! I am so obsessed with Genevieve and Ford and I absolutely love their character developments.
I am not going to spoil ANYTHING…but I really really love how the author not only describes the characters but actually SHOWS how/why they are the way they are (instead of just saying it).
This book is so unique and I am in desperate need of more Gen & Ford🖤
Devoured isn’t even a strong enough word. I started this book around 7 p.m. and physically could not put it down. I had to force myself to go to sleep at 2 a.m.… and to be fair, I only stopped after they finally gave in to the tension and I needed to stay up for the peen!!
Bryn gave us everything we want in an enemies-to-lovers story (though were they ever truly enemies? 😏). There are secrets, twists you absolutely won’t see coming, and moments that had me sending the author voice notes in the middle of the night threatening to call my lawyer for emotional damage.
Genevieve is a badass FMC who holds the secrets of some very influential men and women… but let’s be honest, mostly men. (Once again proving our point that men clearly think with one thing.) Ford is a former-military FBI agent whose mission is to uncover what she knows and lock her away…yet somehow he still finds time to pick up a few lessons on how to be a good Dom along the way. All in the name of the case, of course. 😏
Things get steamy. Things get complicated. And I was hooked. This might be the spiciest slow burn I’ve ever read. The writing is phenomenal, the plot is gripping, and I already cannot wait to read more from B.H. Eastwood.
This book had me absolutely hooked. From the first page, I was pulled into Genevieve and Ford’s world and never wanted to leave. It’s dark, smart, seductive, and full of tension that crackles every time they’re on the page together.
Genevieve is such a powerhouse of a character. She’s sharp, cunning, and impossible not to root for. Ford is her perfect match dangerous, magnetic, and the exact kind of man you know you should stay away from but never could. Their chemistry? Off the charts. Every scene between them had me holding my breath.
The political power plays, the secrets, the control everything about this story is intoxicating. The author doesn’t just tell you who these characters are; you feel it. Every look, every choice, every manipulation made it impossible to stop reading.
I need more of Gen and Ford immediately. This was addicting, sexy, and full of twists that left me reeling.
Obsessed!! This book had me hooked from the first page and I couldn’t put it down. I have never read anything like it before and I think I just found a new favorite author. The way she writes character development is just *chefs kiss* just read it, y’all is so freakin good
"𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐈'𝐦 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐟𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝. 𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐫." It's official: I’m completely obsessed with B.H. Eastwood’s writing. The moment I picked up this book, my entire day vanished. I tore through it and kept thinking about it long after. The mix of power, secrets, and twisted lies creates something dark, addictive, and impossible to resist. This book consumed me. From the first page, I was pulled into Genevieve and Ford’s world and never wanted to leave. It’s dark, smart, seductive, and packed with tension that buzzes every time they share the page. Genevieve is such a powerful character, clever and controlled, and someone you can’t help rooting for. And Ford has that dangerous pull, the kind of presence that screams trouble but keeps you glued to him anyway. His shift into his dominant side completely blew me away. He went from thinking he was the most vanilla man on the planet to revealing this steady, confident edge that was honestly addictive. It comes out so naturally, and every moment of it is delicious. And the way he talks, the boldness and the bite in his words, was unreal. Together, they’re explosive, and every scene between them feels alive and impossible to look away from. The power plays, the secrets, the manipulation, the constant struggle for control—they all blend into a story that’s ridiculously addictive. The author doesn’t just describe these characters; she makes you feel every stare, every choice, every shift in their dynamic. It’s the kind of story that sticks with you, full of tension, desire, and dark intrigue that leaves you craving more. If you’re looking for something dark, addictive, and completely absorbing, this is it. I’m recommending it to anyone who’ll listen because it deserves every bit of hype. A huge thank you to Bryn for sending me the most gorgeous package I’ve ever received. It took a little while to make its way to my doorstep, but it was worth the wait. I’m going to treasure it with everything I’ve got.
I’m really speechless, everything bryn writes is literally god tier. Her storytelling is like no other, and I really mean that. The way she can trap you inside her worlds and make you never wanna leave — should be studied.
Let me start off by saying Genevieve is such a baddie — and I absolutely love a badass FMC & she was that and then some.
Genevieve is a Madam, with her own luxury “matchmaking” business. She takes on all the ‘top dogs’ in exchange for a secret — a GOOOD juicy secret incase she ever needs to use it in her favor. And let’s just say you don’t wanna break any of the rules 🫣
Ford is undercover an trying to bring her down, so when he comes to her and ask her for lessons— YES I said that right— spicy lessons by Genevieve unlocks a side of ford he didn’t know existed .
When secrets, lies and betrayals come crashing down, an when the past comes to light — all of the plot twist come tumbling at you 🤭
I absolutely love the tropes in this book and well I have to also be the holder of secrets so you can get the best experience.
Just trust me when I say, bryn writes the most unique stories. Ford is DADDY and had a filthy fucking mouth he surely knows how to back up. And Genevieve will crash the whole world down to get her vengeance if needed . So buckle up and get ready for a great ass time ✨
This book had everything, secrets, lies, spice, twists and turns and definitely suspense that will have you at the edge of your sit wondering wth just happened
The chemistry and tension with Gen and Ford is amazing! These two met in a bar and the sparks was flying right away
Genevieve is a Madam and basically runs the whole DC if you ask me loll, she has dirt on everyone who steps into her building. She’s just everything and would do anything for her people and I mean ANYTHING. I just love her so much she’s so fierce and amazing
I love these two so much and the spice just had me twirling my hair I couldn’t get enough of this book I read it in one sitting because I was so hooked
Ford oh ford I love him loll he’s so mysterious and has so many secrets. He’s been in the military and now he’s a FBI agent who’s undercover for the last time, he’s definitely going on my book boyfriend list and to top it off he’s also very rich 😩
This book was full of emotions, I’m so obsessed with them and the side characters was also amazing I couldn’t get enough
Tropes- Billionaire, FBI Agent x Madam, Touch her and D!e, Revenge, She teaches him , Secrets and Lies, BDSM
Once again, Bryn has me completely obsessed! From the storyline and plot, to the badass FMC, the drool worthy MMC, and the top tier spice; I was hooked from page one!!
This is my second book by B.H. Eastwood, and both have been unlike anything I’ve ever read. They’re so addictive it’s actually dangerous. I cannot get enough, and she has officially made a forever fan out of me 👏🏼
Genevieve Watts 😈 The baddie. The warrior. The woman who does not mind getting her hands dirty… which, let’s be honest, is my favorite kind of FMC. What I wouldn’t give to grab a filthy martini with her and just YAP. She’s absolutely secured a spot in my top favorites.
And Ford fucking Crawford 😮💨 I highlighted basically everything this man said or did. I adore his love for Gen and how he treats her like the QUEEN SHE IS. A true power couple in every sense!!
There is a FAT chunk of this book I want to scream, squeal, and lose my mind about… but it’s a massive spoiler. Just know there is a plot twist that had me feral in the best possible way 🤭 IYKYK.
Thank you so much, Bryn, for letting me ARC read ASAAL. Forever grateful, and forever thrilled to have this book living rent-free in my brain.
I’M OBSESSED with this book!! Literally had me hooked from the start and I did not want to stop! Plus those plot twists had me shook and threw me for a loop! Everything about this story was so good! Perfect mix of plot, spice, and emotions! And I won’t say too much more because I don’t want to give anything away, but this NEEDS to be on your TBR!
Gen is such a baddie! She has made a name for herself and worked her way up to where she is - talk about strength and resilience! And Ford…I’m obsessed with him and the chemistry that he shares with Gen. Their connection is truly something special. And while Gen has her walls up, it’s no surprise that Ford continues to knock them down.
Thank you so much to B.H. Eastwood for letting me read and review an ARC of this book. I simply cannot get enough of your writing and am excited to see what you have for us in the future!
What to Expect: FBI agent x Madam Forbidden Touch her and die BDSM Forced proximity Billionaire romance Revenge “On your knees” Bada** FMC She teaches him
"Most people can't always get what they want, but I'm Ford fucking Crawford. I will get what I want. And right now, what I want most in this world is her!"
This was so addictive! I absolutely loved our FMC Genevieve. She is a Madam making her money by dominating high society members in her club. Collecting secrets, match making, crawling her way to the top. She meets Ford at a bar, and suddenly she has this feeling she hasn’t felt since she was young. There’s this pull to him, so when Ford ask him to teach her how to be dominating. 🥵 and secrets come out and can she overcome everything she’s taught herself to know at this point in her life? Can she trust him? These two were so much fun to read I loved their chemistry! I couldn’t get enough! I absolutely loved the FMC she’s fierce and strong, you’ll definitely want to dive into this 🔥
“He never stopped looking for me. He doesn’t say it, but he doesn’t have to.”
Ford “let me fight for you” Crawford + Gen “I’m both god and the devil” Watts have hands down become one of my favorite book couples. This is peak he fell first she fell harder and their chemistry…🤭Their date night when Ford asks “what movies did I miss?” TORE EVERY FIBER OF ME APART.
Admittedly I wasn’t very invested or attached to the characters in the beginning but WOOOO that ending in the interrogation room in Part 1…Part 2 was refreshing and added so much clarity and depth to them. It was a tasteful addition to both of their histories.
I wish Part 3 upheld their relationship but once it switched to focusing on the case and political drama it felt like they were being put on the back burner. The ending was a little lackluster imo the way the first two parts were I was expecting a devastating finale but it ended up being perfectly settled? The twist was a good addition though and I enjoyed Gen getting her full circle moment.
First I'm typically not a slow burn girlie but this book had me entranced!! I couldn't put the damn thing down! I loved the dynamic between Genevieve and Ford. The internal struggle was everything!! The tension was thick from the very beginning and watching it unfold was such like a thriller. I've genuinely never had a romance novel put me on the edge of my seat lol. The spice was ok but the story had me hooked from the prologue and that is rare for me! Between the BDSM lessons, the secrets and the investigation mmhmm I'd read this book again in a heartbeat!
I devoured this book!! 🖤 It's such a smart, well written, suspense filled, seductively spicy book 🔥
Genevieve is a seriously badass FMC who will bring you to your knees, she's DC's most powerful Madam and the keeper of its high society elites most scandalous secrets 🖤
Ford is drop dead gorgeous, ex-marine, billionaire and an FBI agent on his last undercover mission.
They have a history, they have insane chemistry, she teaches him to unlock a side of himself he didn't know existed 🥵
I have never read anything as compelling as this before, the spicy and the intrigue are perfectly balanced, we never loose the plot or the insane 5🌶 level
Bryn is a magician with words, grab this book and then buckle up for an insanely good time and don't forget to hydrate and aftercare 🖤
Thank you Bryn and The Smuthood for such an incredible ARC opportunity ❤️
I have been in a book slump but Wow this book was everything I didn't know I needed to get me out of it. The plot and storyline is fabulous. I loved Allison and how she handled her business...so smart and probably happening in our world lol. The love story is heart wrenching at times but so beautiful. Oh and the sex mmmmm is so hot. I highly recommend this book. Usually long books get monotonous but this book flowed and kept you wanting more. Absolutely a great read and plan on reading more from this author.
Oh, this book. I'm not even sure how to classify it other than a fascinating web of secrets and lies. I truly enjoyed it and looked forward to every time I got to sit down and read. She knows the dirty laundry of powerful ppl in Washington and he's been tasked with accessing that info but they happen to be insanely attracted to one another. A full on delight to read.
Genevieve runs an elite BDSM matchmaking network built on the darkest secrets of Washington’s most powerful men. When Ford, an undercover FBI agent, moves in to expose her, their connection sparks into something neither expects. Blending heat, suspense, and sharp twists, B.H. Eastwood’s “A Secret and a Lie” reads like a romantic thriller made for the screen.
Tropes: - FBI Agent x Madam - Forbidden - Touch her and ☠️ - Fierce Virgin FMC - BDSM - Forced Proximity - Billionaire Romance
⚠️NOTE: Brief content notes are listed at the beginning of the book, so be sure to check those before you read. A comprehensive list of content warnings is available at the author’s website, bheastwood.com.
Thank you to B.H. Eastwood and The Smuthood for this opportunity and the gifted e-ARC. This review was left voluntarily, and all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
This is a read you will need to put your thinking cap on.. it is packed..
it is full of surprises and twists some you do not see coming.. omg..
These characters feel 3D not just on paper, if you know what i mean. you can feel the whole life they have lived.. good and bad.
This is book has trauma, and heartbreak and a comeback story you will cheer for. It has corruption and LOTS OF SPICE. I feel like the world we dive into was done so well and thorough. No stone unturned to keep this authentic, speaking both for the FMC and MMC.
Read your triggers, your mental health comes first!
This is my first book from this author, it will not be my last!
This is my honest opinion without being too critical. Of course I recommend everyone to read these books themselves and form their own opinions but for anyone here for Rae's rambles... Here ya go~
Was I expecting to like this story? Absolutely. Was I expecting it to grab me by the throat and make me sit on my couch for 18 hours and not dare to move until it was finished? No. But it did. I was OBSESSED. Completely and utterly hooked on every word. I loved everything about this. The tropes, the plot, the pacing, the characters, the romance. GOD. Just when I got comfortable with the direction the story was headed, something happened and changed EVERYTHING and I was absolutely obsessed.
This story originally caught my eye because it was described as FBI agent x BDSM Madam and I thought I was signing up for a spicy forbidden time but in actuality, it was so much more. It was sorta secret identities with betrayal, then forced marriage, then a revenge plot, all while being a slow burn romance with BDSM dynamics? With a random “the one who got away” second chance romance element?! My god, it was so much and not enough at the same time.
It was perfectly paced in my humble opinion. The romance was slow and had so much tension that I was literally sweating. Spice between the main couple doesn’t even happen until over halfway through the story… which was wild given what the story was about. But it worked perfectly. The characters needed time to trust each other, to willingly slip into their respective roles in the dynamic. So much growth was needed and it made the spicy scenes feel earned and they hit so much harder.
The characters? Own my heart. Unapologetically. We have Genevieve who was an absolute BADASS. Smart, powerful, confident, and terrifying. Holding all the dirtiest secrets in the palm of her hand and building an entire empire on sex, secrets, and trust. She was playing chess while everyone else was playing checkers and I was obsessed with her. And when she finally allowed herself to trust again, I was clutching my pearls and whispering “that’s my baby girl” to my kindle, I swear.
Then we have Ford. Oh. My. God. This man. Practically oozes absolute authority and dominance without even trying. Torn between duty and his own heart. Formulating the ultimate plan to finish his assignment and win the girl at the same time. He was patient, he was stubborn, he just wanted to finish what he started fourteen years ago.
Honourable mention to the side characters because I was freaking obsessed with Drake, Corinne, and Marcus. And my heart is broken over Henry. I literally cried…
The final climax did feel a tiny bit fast to me but ultimately it made sense given just how clever Genevieve was and how much power she really held over everyone. I loved her little revenge arc. Releasing secrets, ruining lives, threatening clients who abandoned her because she held secrets that could literally end some people and I really really liked how Ford trusted her. She knew what she was doing and he let her do whatever she needed to feel safe(and him respecting her choice to keep working as a Madam was chefs kiss)
My favorite part was actually the flashback to fourteen years ago. Learning their connection. Learning what happened and what went wrong. How much they depended on each other and the safety and trust they built and how Genevieve had to tear it all down to save herself. Ford’s trauma and how he was literally in love with the strange girl on the internet. His grief and his bond with Drake. A small moment but so necessary and impactful. I WISH we coulda got the flashback to when he was waiting for her and she never showed because I would've sobbed like a BABY.
Honestly, I loved this so much I don't even have the words to explain it. I was not expecting this to be a five star read but, by God, it was. Excuse me while I go read everything this author has ever written because I need ALL OF IT. 🫡
Thank you so much to my new auto-buy author B. H. Eastwood and Smuthood PR for trusting me with this amazing story ♥️✨

I regret nothing. I feel nothing. I remember everything.
It's official, I am wholly obsessed with B.H. Eastwood and her words. This book owned me for the entire day that it took me to read it, cover to cover. And I still find myself thinking about it. Power, intrigue, secrets and lies. All of them flawlessly weave a tale so sinfully dark and delicious.
She tastes like she belongs to me, like she’s mine to own, to care for, mine to love.
This book is the epitome of female rage, with revenge and intrigue thrown in for a sizzling twist.
Genevieve is a high power madam. She masterfully climbed her way to the top and she keeps her place at the top by harboring secrets from the most powerful echelon of society; the political and the corporate players alike. She knows all the deepest and darkest secrets, and that makes her a risk as much as it makes her dangerous. And now there's a target on her back and she doesn't know who is truly holding the trigger...
Ford is an FBI agent with a job he doesn't want. A complication he never saw coming. And a woman he can't have.
And that's all the details that you'll be getting from me.
Now what can I tell you about this book? It was a thrill ride from beginning to finish. I loved Ford's journey to his dominance. From a man who thought he was as vanilla as they come, his dominant streak finally having the opportunity to come out was simply delicious. I mean, the mouth on this man. GAH. So good.
Genevieve was a force of her own, a predator in high heels, this is a woman who slays her own dragons and I absolutely loved that about her. I also loved the way her vulnerable side came out only with Ford and I loved the masterful way he fought for her trust and owned her body at the same time.
The twists and turns kept me at the edge of my seat. The story was a powerhouse of suspense and sizzling romance, all woven together with political intrigue. Think Mindfck meet Scandal, and yes, it was as good as it sounds.
If you haven't read anything by this incredible author yet, you are seriously missing out. If you want a book that will grab you by the throat from the prologue and keep you at the edge of your seat until the last page, you need to read this!
ARC courtesy of author in exchange for an honest review
A Secret and a Lie by B.H. Eastwood is the kind of book that grabs you by the collar from the very first page and refuses to let go.
The book opens with a gripping prologue that immediately sets the tone: dark, dangerous, and full of questions. Then chapter one veers in a completely different direction, creating a jarring but intentional sense of plot whiplash that kept me alert from the start. That feeling never really stops. Every time I began to think I knew what was going on, the narrative twisted again, revealing another layer of deception, power, or danger.
At the heart of this story is Genevieve, a high-powered madam whose influence stretches deep into political and corporate circles. She holds the kind of secrets that can destroy careers, marriages, and entire power structures, making her both formidable and vulnerable. She’s a fascinating lead sharp, elegant, calculating, and unapologetic. Yet she also has a softer, hidden side that only surfaces around Ford, and I loved the nuance of that dynamic.
Ford, an FBI agent assigned to a job he never wanted, becomes tangled far more intimately in Genevieve’s world than he anticipates. His development was one of my favourite aspects of the book. He begins as someone who considers himself relatively straightforward and “vanilla,” yet as the story progresses, his dominant side emerges in a way that feels organic and compelling. His chemistry with Genevieve is electric but never eclipses the suspense or the political intrigue driving the plot.
The novel blends female rage, revenge, and high-stakes suspense with a romance that burns hot without overwhelming the story. Every chapter contributes something, whether it's uncovering a new secret, complicating a relationship, or raising the stakes for everyone involved. The pacing is tight, the world-building is sharp, and the atmosphere is consistently tense and enticing.
I also enjoyed the small creative touch of the drink pairing at the beginning of the book. It’s a fun, immersive detail that adds personality to the reading experience.
Overall, this was an addictive, twist-packed, and exceptionally well-balanced thriller-romance. I’ll definitely be picking up a physical copy for my shelf. A quick note: the story does include heavy themes, so readers should check trigger warnings beforehand.
A fantastic read and a strong 4.5 stars from me.
Thank you so much to the author and The Smuthood for the opportunity to read this as an ARC for my honest opinion and review!

Ok wow. Just wow. I am completely obsessed with these two! It’s been a minute since I was sucked into a book so quickly! I couldn’t put this one down, talk about saying just one more chapter. 🤭 Every single element of this story is pure perfection, the secrets, the lies, the plot and oh my goddd the spice! ❤️🔥 This one will most definitely be on my reread list! 😉
Ok so I don’t want to give away all the secrets and omg all the lies so I’m gonna make this one as vague as I can.
Ford. Our military man turned FBI agent. This man has been through it. He’s determined to leave the FBI after almost being killed in a previous mission but when the agency gives him one last undercover job he walks right into the thick of it. His mission? Take down the madame who is taking secrets as a fee for all her very powerful clients in DC. But being undercover requires learning how to be in a dom/sub relationship. So who better to ask than the madame herself. 🤭
Genevieve. Or better known as Madame Allison. Gen has been burned before so when she decides to open an elite place for all the kinky powerful clients of DC, of course she’s the queen like the badass she is. Gen has had a wall around her heart for the last 14 years and when she runs into a stranger at the bar she can’t help but feel and pull towards him. Well let’s just say that pull will end up being everything to her.
These two are so dang delicious and I love their chemistry and omg the banter. The inner monologue of these two was probably my fav. I loved watching them fall and fall oh so dang hard together. 😍
The spice is oh so yummy and done oh so well! Bryn really has the spice down beautifully and I ate up every single spicy chapter. ❤️🔥
So just take my word for it, go in blind. Just open the book and go. Don’t look back. You’ll love it. Trust me.

Thank you THANK YOU to Smuthood and Bryn for the chance to read this absolute masterpiece! I will be thinking of this one for the foreseeable future. 🖤
✨ When the city runs on secrets, loving the keeper of them all might be the most dangerous sin of all.
📖 A Secret and A Lie by B.H. Eastwood ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️.5 Romantic Suspense / Forbidden Romance
Tropes: 🔒 Forbidden romance 🕵️♂️ Madam x FBI spy 🛡️ Touch her and 💀 ⛓️ BDSM 🏢 Billionaire 🏛️ Political corruption 🔥 Forced proximity 💔 Second chance (light)
Gen—known to D.C.’s elite as Allison—isn’t just a matchmaker. She’s a madam who trades in secrets, the quiet power behind a city full of liars. When a new politician vows to “cleanse” Washington of corruption, her business becomes a target. Enter Ford, former Marine turned FBI asset, forced to infiltrate her world, steal her dossier, and bring her down. Except nothing is simple when the woman you’re supposed to betray is the only one who truly sees you.
This book beautifully showcases how Gen became the powerful, guarded, razor-sharp woman she is. She’s survived the worst life could throw at her—turning trauma into armor and secrets into currency. Her growth is phenomenal: from trusting no one to slowly trusting herself… and eventually Ford. Her stubbornness, intuition, and instinctual understanding of people made me fall for her instantly.
Ford is the greenest of green flags. Protective, controlled, clever, gentle where it counts and dangerous where it matters. His flashback POVs add so much emotional depth—not just to him, but to their entire connection. You feel why he wants her, why he chooses her, why he cannot betray her.
The plot is chef’s kiss—twisty in the best way, but always grounded in logic. Every reveal makes sense, every escalation is earned, and I never felt lost. The chemistry is flirty, playful, laced with innuendo and tension that smolders on every page. If anything, I wanted even more banter because they’re absolutely magnetic together.
This book was gripping, clever, emotional, and deliciously forbidden. I devoured it.
Thank you The Smuthood and B.H. Eastwood for this ARC—I already need more from this author.
There is no other way to start this review than to say, just READ IT. I was locked in to this story from beginning to end. I tend to overanalyze/try to figure out any mysteries or twists in a book, and I would like to think I am pretty good at it, but this one had a few surprises I just didn't see coming! As a dark romance novel, it may not be for all people, there are certainly dark themes in both a good and bad sense. That said, if you enjoy going into a book blind, and if you are safe to, I recommend for this story. I personally enjoy going into stories pretty blind, and this was no exception. The characters are compelling, with more depth to them than they initially seem. Even the side characters are more than one note for the most part. If you're looking for a cutthroat FMC that can hold her own, you do not have to look any further. Genevieve certainly stands her ground and can go toe-to-toe with anyone, man or woman, that tries to come after her or someone she cares about. While this can often mean an insecure MMC or power struggles between the main characters, Ford is a man of booktok dark romance dreams, who appreciates and encourages his person in a deliciously obsessive way. Each compliments the other perfectly. There's also a great balance between fun sarcasm and possessive devotion that makes the characters feel more real, and less like perfectly written characters, allowing you to really get absorbed into the story. The plot moves pretty quickly, although I found some parts in the middle to be a bit slower. This is most likely due to the focus on setting the scene for the rest of the book. While there is some world building, it is set in what feels like a pretty realistic, if not disappointing, version of our own reality; so there isn't too much to learn or remember as far as background information. Overall, this book is a fantastic, extremely spicy, romance; perfect for the readers who always decipher those dark romance acronyms just a little too quickly. As always, check lists before reading if needed! Enjoy!
Trigger warning! If BDSM or a Dom/Sub relationship offends you in any way, then this book and review is 100% not for you. That said, if you were a huge fan of Olivia Pope from Scandal, enjoy some (or lots of) spice, watching someone seek revenge for the abuse she endured, and the power plays that expose corrupt politicians, then keep reading and add this to your TBR list!
The book starts out 14 years prior when Genevieve was just getting started in the industry to make ends meet, while at the same time chatting online with Ford who was stationed overseas in the Marines. They had never met in person, or even seen what the other looked like, but their online conversations were saving them from the world they were both currently navigating. When one night completely shatters Genevieve from the abuse she endured from multiple men, she cut off ties with Ford to run away from the hateful world she found herself in.
In present day, Gen has re-established herself as the most powerful Madam in Washington DC with secrets from every single one of her high profile clients that would burn DC and the government to the ground. If you thought Olivia Pope controlled everything in DC in Scandal, she’s not even on the same playing field as Gen!
Ford is now working with the FBI and has gone undercover to bring down the most powerful Madam in history. Only, he has no idea that very Madam he’s been tasked to capture is the girl who has held his heart for the last 14 years. Sparks fly instantly as she’s “training” him to be a Dom. And when he finally realizes who she is to him, everything changes. He completes his task and brings her down, only to join her side and help her rebuild and get vengeance for everyone who wronged her.
The spice is 🥵 (beyond anything that I have read before), the vengeance is dirty, and the secrets are scandalous. The secrets are what kept me reading because I HAD to know them all. The spice was just extra!
- arc review - A Secret and A Lie by B.H. Eastwood ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Revenge FBI agent x Madam Taboo BDSM A second chance (kind of) Ex-Military Sir and Madam Secrets and Deceptions "Get on your knees" She educates him
This novel elegantly illustrates how Gen transformed into the formidable, guarded, and sharp-witted woman she has become. She has endured the harshest trials life could present—turning her trauma into armor and her secrets into a form of currency. Her evolution is remarkable: from a place of distrust to gradually learning to trust herself… and ultimately, Ford. Her tenacity, intuition, and innate understanding of others made me fall for her right away.
Ford embodies the ultimate green flag. He is protective, composed, intelligent, gentle when necessary, and formidable when it counts. His flashback perspectives add significant emotional richness—not only to his character but to their dynamic.
Genevieve is an absolute force of nature. She is sharp, clever, and utterly impossible not to cheer for. Ford complements her perfectly—dangerous, magnetic, and exactly the type of man you know you should avoid but can’t resist. Their chemistry? Off the charts. Every interaction between them had me on the edge of my seat.
The political maneuvering, the hidden truths, the power dynamics—everything about this narrative is captivating. The author doesn’t merely describe who these characters are; you experience it. Every glance, every decision, every manipulation made it impossible to put the book down.
When the stakes are high and secrets come to light… can her feelings for Ford transcend everything she has conditioned herself to believe? Only time will reveal the answer.
Fourteen years prior @livingh3ll and @dc_d0ll found solace in each other as they met as strangers online. They agreed to met up but before that could happen @dc_d0ll trusted the wrong people even after she got this feeling and the moment she let her guard down, her life changed forever….
Present Day:
Genevieve is a Madam and basically runs D.C. she has dirt on everyone who steps into her building. She's just everything and would do anything for her people and I mean ANYTHING. She’s so fierce, protective and amazing after everything that she has endured over the last fourteen years.
But then Ford appears, and the spark between them hits immediately. He pulls emotions out of her she buried years ago, and their chemistry is intense in a way that feels both dangerous and irresistible. For someone new to his dominant role, he dove in completely. His devotion to Gen showed. But he’s also tasked as the FBI agent tasked with bringing her down….
What starts as a mission for him turn into something completely earth shattering when he finally figures out who she is and the instant connection to Gen. But he’s in too deep and he does what anyone would do for a love one, be sure that what information he knows can’t be used against her in the take down. Sign it with a ring, that she knows nothing about. LOLL.
Quotes:
“You’re each what the other has been waiting for.”
"Ford, we can't be friends." "Give me one reason." "Because I'm not friends with people I'm tempted to kneel for."
"You belong to me. Your pleasure is mine to control, your pain is mine to possess. There's only one way to earn what you want tonight."
This book was full of emotion, plot twists and passion it will keep you turning pages and wondering what you I’ll happen next. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. B. H. Eastwood was a new to me author and I was not disappointed with this read.
Who knew this story would be full circle after fourteen years.
A Secret and a Lie had me hooked from the very first page—like, genuinely, I forgot to breathe a couple of times. Genevieve? She’s a total force of nature in heels. I swear, she could topple empires just by arching an eyebrow, and she’d probably look immaculate doing it. She’s razor-sharp, calculating, magnetic in that way where you know you should be intimidated but you just can’t look away. Watching her play the Washington power game honestly felt like watching a queen dominate the chessboard—except I never quite knew if I was rooting for her or low-key terrified. And Ford. Oh boy. Dangerous doesn’t even begin to cover it. He’s hypnotic, all power and temptation, the kind of man your best friend would text you in all caps to warn you about. But then you meet his eyes and, well, your heart betrays you every single time. The chemistry between Genevieve and Ford? It’s ridiculous. I found myself practically holding my breath every time they shared a scene. Every look, every word between them is this wild mix of threat and promise—I could practically feel the tension buzzing in my own chest. The best part? The political games and secrets don’t just serve as background noise. They’re woven into every interaction, every stolen glance. Reading this book is like being dropped right into the heart of D.C., feeling the adrenaline and danger humming beneath every line of dialogue. The seduction isn’t just obvious—it’s subtle, it’s everywhere, and I was absolutely here for it. I tore through the pages, desperate to know how these two would survive each other (and everyone else). It’s twisty, seductive, and totally addictive. I love a powerful, complicated heroine and a hero who’s all danger and heart, and this book delivers both in spades. If you want something that’ll raise your blood pressure and keep you up way too late, this is it.
