Sophie Bessis (Arabic: صوفي بسيس‎) is a Tunisian-born French historian, journalist, researcher, and feminist author. She has written numerous works in French, Spanish, and English on development in the Maghreb and the Arab world, as well as the situation of women. A history scholar and former editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine Jeune Afrique, she is currently a research associate at the Institute for International and Strategic Relations (IRIS) in Paris and Deputy Secretary General of the International Federation of Rights Leagues (FIDH). She has taught the political economy of development at the Department of Political Science at the Sorbonne and in the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO). She is a consultant for UNESCO and UNICEF, has carried out numerous missions in Africa.

Excellent essai à contre-courant qui met en pièces cette expression de civilisation judeo-chrétienne qui pourtant semble acceptée par tous. À lire !

Brillante, aunque, en mi opinión, es una lástima que patine en ciertos aspectos hacia el final del libro.

Me parece muy desafortunado que afirme sin ningún tipo de complejo y con total rotundidad el supuesto antisemitismo ligado a los estados del Magreb y a sus nacionalismos y, luego, aclarado a pie de página con letras oportunamente diminutas desmienta lo dicho (con hechos indiscutibles) en un tono casi anecdótico. Obviando por supuesto el hecho de que los propios argelinos judíos reafirmaban su excepcionalidad al tomar bando con Francia tras siglos de convivencia y al aceptar su condición privilegiada de "ciudadanos de primera" frente al resto de argelinos durante la colonización. Ahí precisamente se refleja la voluntad de deshacerse de su parte oriental y difuminarse en esta supuesta civilización judeocristiana dominante. Por lo tanto, es absurdo e inaceptable señalar a los árabes, y en este caso al Magreb, como antisemitas y equiparar su rencor a haber sido despreciados y traicionados (en el mejor de los casos) por aquellos que SÍ veían como a su compatriotas al antisemitismo europeo.

Es una lástima que la conclusión centre casi toda su preocupación en el antisemitismo que pueda traer a largo plazo un "Estado" (del que antes no podía decirse nada, y ahora, de repente, todos quieren desvincularse) y deje en los márgenes la gravedad del crecimiento y la normalización de la cada vez más brutal violencia islamófoba actual.

An extremely interesting essay on the construction of the concept of Judeo-Christian Civilisation and its political use in rewriting history in the West, particularly in converting right-wing anti-Semitism into philo-Semitism and constructing an age-old conflict between the “Arab-Muslim” enemy and "Judeo-Christian civilisation", while simultaneously serving as ideological support for Israel and its genocidal policies against the Palestinians. Essential reading!
