I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.
Lisette owns a bookstore that is doing well one day she discover a hidden room and finds a mysterious box that’s needs a specific key. Sheridan is a neurosurgeon who comes to Lisette bookstore but doesn’t realizes she has the key to the mysterious box. When they both learn this they discover a mystery that leads to different clues as they grow closer the clues starts to go cold but Lisette isn’t ready to give up not only on this adventure but on what she thinks can last between her and Sheridan. I enjoy this read it’s was cute seeing how excited the characters would find a clue and figuring it out the next step the supporting characters just as great in giving advice and encouragement.
A special thank you to NetGalley, Bold Strokes Books and author MJ Williamz for this ARC. I am leaving my honest review.
Alright, this book was really fun and highly entertaining! Chasing Her Scent took me by surprise as it is such a multifaceted and layered book that I really enjoyed reading. It has a great central romance mixed with mystery, historical elements and a ton of heart. I found this book to be really entertaining. This story had so much going on that it sucked me in and kept my rapt attention throughout. I appreciated the prologue set in 1789 with a deliciously spicy little love story of Josephine and Margot to lay a bit of foundation. It’s just enough to hook me in without giving anything away.
Lisette operates a bookshop inside of Quebec City, a place that I have now decided to place firmly in my “must travel to” list. She loves books and is perfectly content in her quiet life. She doesn't really realize she’s missing anything until she's wrapped in a life changing treasure hunt that changes everything forever. Sheridan, a successful, brilliant and beautiful neurosurgeon finds herself in Lisette's charming little bookshop and what ensues is just so much fun to read! We get thrust into a historical treasure hunt and one of a kind adventure which helps to highlight a really sweet romance. Lisette and Sheridan uncover a secret room and a mystery box whose contents act as the catalyst for an incredible journey. Our main characters go from solving mysteries and connecting clues to discovering true romantic connections and falling in love. The central mystery driven adventure is a fun background for the wonderful love story that ensues.
The chemistry between Lisette and Sheridan is quite profound and evident almost immediately. They are really great together and seem to balance one another perfectly. Lisette is warm, kind and has a sort of “small bookstore charm” that is so sweet. She’s been through her share of obstacles but remains positive. I liked her a lot. Sheridan is accomplished and her life is dictated by the demands of her career as a doctor. What they found together graduated from curiosity to affection pretty quickly. Their banter is adorable and I can’t complain about their spicy romantic interludes.
The writing style is easy to read, humorous and sweet. Author MJ Williams pays careful attention to writing realistic and natural dialogue which helps the characters feel like real people. I felt like this book had so many elements aiding in creating a compelling adventure and tender love story. I really liked our leading ladies and really believed their love was tue…they were very cute together and I was rooting for them. I don’t often mention side characters as I tend to have laser focus on the central love story but the meddling and well intentioned assistance were a definite bonus.
I loved the mystery and adventure this book offered. Pulling on a book to reveal a secret staircase?! Yes, please! Okay there's plenty of fun historical mystery and all of it with a sapphic twist…my favorite kind! Throughout their sleuthing Lisette and Sheridan fall in love and it was really fun to read about. If you enjoy sapphic romance with elements of adventure, mystery and a very swoon worthy central romance, then give this a read.
Sheridan is a neurosurgeon who meets Lisette when she visits her bookstore in Quebec City. She just happens to be the person Lisette needed to find to reveal the secrets locked in a box she found in a hidden room in the store. Discovering its contents belonged to Marie Antoinette, sets them off on a journey to find the treasure the maps indicates is hidden somewhere in Canada.
From the moment Lisette and Sheridan met they were instantly attracted to one another, and insatiable with their connection. They were on a wild ride, with their assistants, who also shared and attraction upon meeting. Sheridan really turned her life upside down to stay in Quebec City longer than intended because they were determined to get answers about this map and perfume they have found. Of course, given the age of the items, it made quite the challenge for them.
They were all really resourceful and practical in their execution of the plans to search for this treasure. The notes and letters Lisette had already found between two women before she had managed to open the box, also gave them another angle to investigate, so they were searching for answers the whole time. It was an entwining of the past and present, in a strange way of the perfume and treasure bringing lovers together. There were lots of hidden little gems that as the more the discovered about the people the box had belonged to and Marie Antoinette, answered a lot of their own personal questions to.
The author has created a lovely mix of adventure, discovery, and romance in Chasing Her Scent. It’s an enjoyable read, though there are quite a few elements that feel a bit unrealistic — like barely attending the conference, taking extra weeks off work without much effort, or leaving the shop behind so easily. Still, these details serve the story well and support the journey toward opening the box and finding the treasure.
The development of the relationship is just as passionate as the treasure hunt itself, with plenty of intimacy between the main characters, written in an intense and vivid way. The supporting characters and the storyline from the past add balance and depth, complementing the overall plot nicely.

Lisette finds a hidden room with a mysterious box that needs a certain key in the bookstore she owns. Sheridan is a neurosurgeon who ends up having the key but doesn't know it.
It takes them on the discovery with different clues, but they closer they get, harder to find the clues. Lisette doesn't want to give up on the journey where the clues lead or the burgeoning relationship with Sheridan. I wish I had more to say.
It was an alright read, but feel like it could've been better. I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This ended up being a one star DNF for me. I went in intrigued by the premise, but the story never really clicked and I struggled to stay engaged. The mystery felt drawn out without enough payoff, and the pacing made it hard for me to stay invested in either the plot or the characters. I kept hoping it would pick up or take a more interesting turn, but by the time I stopped reading, I realized I wasn’t enjoying the journey. It just wasn’t the right book for me, and I decided to move on rather than push through.
Nearly 3-stars. The beginning was definitely intriguing but personally I would have liked more about the treasure search and its history, which was a big part of the story, and what they did with the ‘treasure’ in the end. Although the plot needed some suspension of reality it was an interesting concept.
