When a caller reports seeing an alligator dragging a man through the waters of Bayou Tail, Officer Homer Verdin responds to the scene and leaps into action. When he disappears in the muddy waters, Clint Wolf and the rest of the Mechant Loup team begin a desperate search for their friend and fellow law enforcement officer.
During the search, they make a puzzling discovery that will lead Clint on the trail of dangerous killer.
Will Homer be okay, or will tragedy strike? And will Clint and the rest of the team be able to track down and bring this killer to justice?
Whatever the case, one thing is crystal they are all willing to die trying.
I've read and enjoyed every book in this series, so when this installment came out, I quickly downloaded it. I became a fan of this saga because of the relatable characters, believable procedures, vibrant setting, and the PG content (language, gore, violence, and intimacy are always pretty clean).
This one was a bit of a departure from the proven recipe I've come to love.
We start with Homer, and he's one of my favorite characters, but he's quickly abandoned. I know this is the Clint Wolf series, not the Clint Wolf and Friends series, but there's usually a focus on others in his team. It looked like we'd see a lot of Homer in this one, but we didn't. Amy became the other focus, but nothing personal. Just as it relates to the case. We saw a little of Sue because of a side plot that carried over from an earlier book, but that resolved quickly. She was in one other critical scene before being relegated to the background too. I thought we might then return to Homer, but instead we got a few scenes with Melvin. Melvin is my second favorite character, so I was thrilled to see him on the page, but that wasn't really fleshed out either. This one left me craving more character time with everyone.
It also left me unsatisfied with the plot. A prior storyline comes to a close in this one, but there was no lead-in or denouement to it. It felt like something thrown in to pad word count. The villain in this one is never really introduced to us. The suspect wasn't on the radar until the final showdown, and the hero-complex motivation was in stark contrast to the remorseless killings and attempted killings. It felt like there might be a message about the lingering effects of wartime military service (particularly with Vietnam vets), but that was never explored either. And the vulgarity was amplified in this book (with respect to language and explicit content).
All told, this was my least favorite of the series. It wasn't bad, and I will still read the next book to see if there's a return to form or more of the same. Fans of police procedurals will still enjoy this. Based on the complete body of work, I have to give it a 3.5 rounded up to 4.
This is the 35th book in this series and I have read them all. i have given all of them 5 stars. Not this one. I would swear that this book was written by someone else. Clint, the main character, is a veteran of law enforcement but acts like he's never worked a case in his life. Amy was more irritating than usual and it is ridiculous the way that Clint is constantly trying to protect Susan. Susan is the dang chief of police and he acts like she's some delicate flower. So annoying. If I didn't know better, I would swear that this book had been written by a woman. It seems like the same drivel that you read in all of the "cozy" mysteries. There is a reason that I read books written by men and not women. Books written by men are realistic. This story was not realistic. it was annoying. This might be my last Clint Wolf mystery.

This one was disappointing. The plot was simple. The most amount of detail to the story was in finding the first victim. I think that took about 15% of the book.
I know BJ Bourg has decades of law enforcement experience, but it seems like he takes too much license with his stories. It seems like he gets some legal facts wrong to make the stories work the way he wants.
It doesn't seem like the first books in this series over explained things. However, the last few have been full of lengthy explanations about random things that don't add value to the story.
I also wasn't a fan of Clint not arresting a certain person.
Every BJ Bourg book in the Clint Wolf series is outstanding. It takes you on warp speed as Wolf and his team try to solve crimes. And being that the crimes are in Louisiana and the swamp lands it tends to make it a bit complicated. I love all the characters (of course that doesn't include the baddies) try to think what actors would be great at playing them. The stories are so, so good and you cannot pick a favorite. The stories have it all: action, suspense, thrills and chills and there's a little humor here and there which balances the stories just right. Thank you, BJ Bourg! Keep them coming!
It just keeps getting better and better, what a heart stopping, riveting case. My heart was in my mouth with each turn of the page, I can’t say too much because I don’t want to spoil it for others.
Look forward to each new installment of this series. Novels are well plotted and obviously written by a professional police person. Characters are well developed, and I enjoy renewing their acquaintance. Looking forward to their new adventures.
His story line catches and keeps you going through the story like winding curves around a mountainous terrain. It is never dull and keeps you focused so you can’t put it down. Thank you Mr Bourg for another gripping episode of Clint Wolfe and the Wolfe pack.
As usual , BJ Bourg has written a very readable and captivating murder mystery. Love the suspense and how the characters all seem real. He writes with knowledge and skill. I am always eager to get the email string his next book is available . Keep them coming
Terrific police thriller, Clint and the gang have two horrific murders to solve, with an apparent sexual motive. Of course, they will find the killer, or will he find them forst?
An alligator is spotted pulling a man across the highway into the swamp and Homer rushes into action and dives into to find the man. The man was murdered before the alligator got him and Clint and Amy begin investigating. A fast-paced action packed story
WOW! THIS AUTHOR HAS A WAY WITH WORDS THAT CAN SCARE THE HECK OUTA ME. HE PICKED SOMETHING L'M TERRIFIED OF SINK HOLES. OMG, AT 10% IT SCARED ME SO BAD I DIDN'T WANT TO KEEP READING FOR FEAR OF WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN. WHEW WHAT-A-RUSH! ;D
I always enjoy books written by Bourg. This was no exception with stories within stories. Nonetheless the endless speculation of who and what happened by Cliff and Ames gets to be a bit much.
These books never loose there appeal , Clint nearly loses two of his men and is a target for a man determined to kill him . Full of action of highs and lows and a really good read ,welll written and hope for more ,great series .
