Boundless - technically Boundless (The Boundless Series, Book 1) - on the surface feels like a regular "girl discovers powers and crushes her enemies" type of story. Dig a bit beyond the surface and there's quite a bit more lurking underneath. A nascent romance. An undiscovered history. A great deal of mystery. It's the mystery that draws you further into the tale. I mean, don't get me wrong, the story is fun and I enjoyed the writing style, but the mystery beckons to my soul. I want to know more about the mythology of the world these folks live in. Like most talented writers, Nixon gives us this information in bits and pieces rather than tossing a dump at us. In fact, she doles it out so masterfully, you're still left with questions at the end.
Which, ya know, duh: It's book one of a series. You don't braindump all the important stuff in the first book of the series unless you want the rest of the series to be about how Zari and Nickolas learn to enjoy baseball and beer.

Jenn Nixon is a great writer. As always she's created an interesting world. You're invested in Zari and the mystery that unfolds. Will she discover the truth and how will it change and possibly save the life of another. The book definitely leaves you wanting more and sets up for further adventures with Zari, Nick, and the rest of the group.
