I feel a bit shit just giving it three stars. It's clearly a labour of love, and I have a burning desire to rewatch the Royle Family now. But the decision not to write about Aherne's personal struggles was a mistake. For a more complete understanding of Aherne's work and talent, it would have been enlightening to tie in more of her personal life, the good, the bad and the ugly, to show how she drew on these experiences in her comedy. Without it, the book lacks depth, despite having plenty of heart.
A really enjoyable tribute book, going into the work of Caroline Aherne. When I was on Page 43 I couldn't read because I had to watch the pilot episodes mentioned. This is a good thing because I wouldn't watched the lesser known things at the time.
Only Caroline Aherne could have got away with calling out Bernard Manning like that.
Recommeded tribute/biography if you liked Mrs Merton or the Royle Family. Very popular TV viewing at the time. Then Caroline Aherne became involved narrating Gogglebox.
The book only really touches on Caroline's personal struggles and health. I suppose a lot of tributes focus on the positives and achievements. That said lesser known or lesser popular work was also mentioned.
Thank you to Goodreads for moving this book over to the listing of the rightful David Scott author. I met the author and bought a signed copy at at a book signing.
