Although we had no money, I was rich as I could be, in my coat of many colors my mama made for me.
Dolly Parton's rural upbringing in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee provides the backdrop for this special picture book that tells the story of a young girl in need of a winter coat. Using lyrics from her classic song "Coat of Many Colors," Dolly fondly chronicles how her mother sews her a coat made of rags, and how she is mocked by classmates for being poor. But Parton's positive outlook carries through to the end as the girl realizes that her coat was made with love "in every stitch."
Whimsical illustrations pair with Parton's poetic lyrics in this heartfelt picture book that eloquently reveals how love and positivity make us richer than anything money can buy. This special 10th anniversary edition features an updated fabric cover and a foreword from Dolly Parton herself that is sure to resonate with fans of all ages.
Dolly Rebecca Parton (January 19, 1946—August 25, 2026) was an American singer, songwriter, actress, philanthropist, and businesswoman.
Beginning in the mid-1980s, Parton supported many charitable efforts, particularly in the area of literacy, primarily through her Dollywood Foundation. Her literacy program, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, which is a part of the Dollywood Foundation, was founded in honor of her father, who never learned to read or write. It mails one book per month to each enrolled child from the time of their birth until they enter kindergarten. Over 1600 local communities provide the Imagination Library to almost 850,000 children each month across the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia and the Republic of Ireland. --Wikipedia
I always knew of her picture book, but never read it. Until now. Honoring Dolly with this read, a beautiful message to children about the importance of being true to oneself, honoring difference, and the destructiveness of bullying. Her end letter is just beautiful.
I usually give books as baby presents, and do believe I’ll choose this one to include in my gifts going forward.
of course i had to grab my own personal copy of this after the legend herself, ms. dolly parton passed. (r.i.p. 🦋). this is the sweetest little children’s book. from a former primary teacher’s perspective: this would be a great starting off place for elementary students for author’s stories, spotlighting an autobiography moment, capturing memories and expanding into own writing piece. of course-always read for enjoyment’s sake.
This book is adorable and very easy to read and understand the illustrations are so cute and colorful. I could read it everyday. Lessons learned while reading this one is worth getting copies for all the littles in your life. Mary Reader received this book from the publisher for review.
