“You’re just convincing yourself that it’s fun,” Shiki laughed. “Do you know how much of a burden it is for us to be alive, how much it restricts our freedom?”
“Being alive restricts our freedom? Isn’t it the other way around?”
“No. The belief that we must live is the root of what robs humans of their freedom.”
“But if you die, there’s nothing. There’s no freedom or anything.”

A prequel starring Magata Shiki, from Mori’s debut work. Rather than a mystery (there is a locked-room murder, but it is trivial and dispensed with early on) this is more of a character study, though there still are some elements that are reminiscent of mysteries. Also, this ties the S&M series and V series together, not that said link wasn’t obvious from the last book of the latter. Technically all four books are meant to form a cohesive whole, so I’m interested to see where Mori takes them.
