So real, so truthful, so inspiring, in so many many ways. First let me start with the basics - while I'm of course a little biased for reasons you'll know if you read what's likely to be my lengthy entire review, I'm also a very avid reader. This book is well-written and engaging; if work and sleep weren't a requirement, I would have finished it in one sitting. You'll definitely want to read it straight through. It's also many stories, inside many stories, with something to take away and think about in all of them. The end of the book is awesome and even better in that it's just the end of the book, not the end of the story!
I imagine it could be triggering for some who have suffered or are suffering from mental health issues but who can also find that they're not alone, that they're not worthless, that they're not some aberration, that there is always hope -- that's what this book...and Speranza...is all about. I strongly urge anyone who could be triggered to read it when you can read straight through...don't stop during the rough stuff...keep reading to find your own hope through Janine's experiences.
For those who have been or are heavily involved in rescue or sheltering and/or are just obsessed with dogs and animals entirely, this was not for me one of those dog books that are hard to read because your heart gets so broken in some sort of way. That's not to say, you won't cry...you probably will. But this is an ongoing story and it's real. The good, the bad, the sad, the inspiring, the happy tears, the sad tears and the decisions that are so hard to make, the ones some people will judge you for, all of which Janine does an exceptional job of telling every aspect about. Even if you don't agree with some of her decisions, you'll understand how she came to them and respect her even more so.
This book also made me think about how sometimes we don't realize or won't even ever know how the ripples from the pebble we throw in the water may span out and positively impact someone or some animal for the better. I know Janine wrote this book in the hope that it may help others who are struggling the way she has. It's incredibly courageous for her to open herself up and tell her story to do so.
For me personally, she rescued my girls. In rescuing them, she rescued me. In a deep grief from a loss I felt to my soul, one that left me feeling like the numbness inside me would never go away, I happened to stumble upon the live stream of their rescue. Everything happens for a reason. Fast forward: I adopted this bonded pair of initially hot messes, even while wondering if I could give them my whole heart and if they, after living on their own for over a year with only each other would even let me into their very bonded circle of trust. All those worries were gone in the quick wiggle of a pair of pittie butts. Janine saved them and they saved me.
They have their own social media page and I once received a message from one of their followers that basically said, you don't know me but I just wanted to tell you the joy the girls give me every time I see one of their posts. This book reminded me how the littlest things we do could make a difference to someone else and that's just one of the reasons I found it to be inspiring. Janine's ripples probably travel farther than most, but we all can toss out our own pebbles and spread the speranza/hope.
If you've gotten this far in my review or are just skipping to the end, my recommendation is read this!!! You won't regret it!
I’ve followed Speranza since Libre and have attended several of their events, so this story really touched me. The way they take in the most unwanted animals and love them back to life is truly inspiring. Janine’s honesty about her mental health is hard to read but so full of hope. She’s truly an angel on earth.
