bury me with this series.
I adored continuing this journey with Zara and the others, i feel like the world building in this one got 10x better?? didn't even think that was possible. I love that these books are pure action, start to finish. It's truly a high fantasy packed with a really cool magic system and latin mythology inspired lore. Book 2 did a great job with expanding on the character's backstories and seeing the plot start to come together more.
I loved catching glimpses of other
characters (even ones i don't particularly care for🤨) and getting their povs!! not only did it make the plot more interesting but it also made me look at them in a different light, even finding empathy for the villain in a way *cough cough*. Expanding on Zara and Ronan's trauma was also so well done, it had me crying from how vulnerable these characters got, and how they healed by opening up to one another. beautiful.
and the YEARNING?! ugh these men. Whenever I wasn't shaking in my boots during battle scenes, I was probably wiping my tears and sobbing into my pillow at some of the lines from Ronan or Ares. I love them bad!! They would move heaven and earth for their women AS THEY SHOULD.
it's absolutely criminal that i'll have to be agonizing over this cliffhanger until book 3! but it'll be worth it. can't wait🖤.

Show me a better sequel than this i will wait.
Some authors tend to do with the second book in a series more of a filler book and i am beyond happy that this proved that great authors don’t need filler books 🤭
We pick up right where we left off and i was enchanted from the first page.
We get to see Zara’s internal struggle with her emotions and everything that happened at the end of book 1 as well as Daria who has to save her kingdom.
And let me tell you this: the men in this book love serving(relatively and figuratively) the FMC’s and they don’t mind letting them be in charge.
I loved that we get to see some things inspired latin mythology which was very important to the story and also very refreshing to see.
GIVE THIS TO ME RIGHT NOW

A stunning follow up to Fall of the Horizon -- Jessica J. Ayala wrenched every bit of emotion out of me with this one.
Jessica did a wonderful job of weaving together a plot-forward epic fantasy with the perfect amount of romance and emotion. I am hooked into this plot, the waging battle, and I cannot see where she takes this story next -- especially after that deadly cliffhanger. It hurt and yet truly felt like the emotional devastated needed to slowly torture the reader midway through the series. Though, that did not stop me from cursing her name a bit for that.
The continuation of Zara and Ronan's journeys -- and their relationship to each other -- is so emotional and at times painful that it aches throughout the story until they finally give in to those feelings. I loved getting to see Zara find out more about a past world as Ronan came to grips with his own trouble past with one of our villains.
Let's also talk about the show stealers -- Daria and Ares. These too sizzles in every damn scene they were in. I loved everything about their individual journeys -- Daria to find the last of the dragons and Ares on a path of schemes and redemption. Their chemistry together was also equal parts banter and wit. And it just leapt off the page. I need more of these two!
Overall, this epic fantasy has me hook, line, and sinker and I am desperate for the next installment.

Jessica. Jessica what the HELLLLLLLL WAS THAT?! 😭😭😭😭😭 I’m trying to write my review and I cannot seem to get the water to stop leaking from my eyeballs. I spent the last twenty minutes just trying to breathe and gather myself for a review without wanting to throw up. I know you warned us but I was not ready. I WASNT READYYYYY. 😭😭😭😭 *a character I cannot name* WHEN I CATCH YOU ITS HANDS ON SIGHT.

The review honestly should be just this paragraph lmaooo. I loved (and I mean LOVED) book one, but book two? Hollllllyyyyy cow, it was literally like having an anime film play out in my head the whole time. Jam packed with allllll of the action. As an avid fantasy reader- this has everything you could want. Beautiful world building, beautiful romance, fierce characters, a villian who you want to jump in the book and end yourself.
All of these characters are my favorite and that’s hard to say with a book. Usually there’s one character you just don’t vibe with (besides the antagonist) and that’s not the case here, even the side characters.. you’re attached to.
Our favorite, stab first ask questions absolutely never, FMC Zara is just as brutal (if not more) in this book. My GIRL though, one of my favorite lead characters. She had so much trauma to work through after book one ended. My heart, it broke so many times for her. It broke over and over, this whole book ngl, but for her SO much. There was no reprieve of the emotional turmoil in this book. I literally am still wrapping my head around what just happened and I finished the book 12 hours ago.

Daria, our Firelight, our ambassador turned absolutely FIERCE Queen. (I say I don’t have favorites but she’s my favorite.) Her rise in this book was beautiful. Strong and sassy. She did the damn thing.

Ronan, the most selfless MMC literally ever to grace the book world. He stands by Zara faithfully while trying to navigate life in returning to Damalis, returning to his friends & realm he had to leave behind.

Blood of the Lost Gods is book two in the Dusk and Dawn series and somehow it’s even better than the 5-star, 10/10 first book, Fall of the Horizon. I am completely emotionally invested in this story.
The characters are complex, their emotions and behaviors realistic and relatable. It’s been wonderful watching how the relationships grow (and crumble). While I love our badass FMC, Zara, I was especially drawn to her now-queen younger sister. She’s come a long way from being the polite, sheltered princess and has grown into someone who wants to do more and be more than a figure who simply sits on a throne. You can really see the work she’s put into becoming that person. Not to mention, as much as I love our little vampire war general, watching Ares grovel has been beyond enjoyable.
I’m completely blown away by the worldbuilding. The new locations they visit are written so vividly that I can perfectly imagine both the beauty and the harshness they encounter throughout their travels. The action scenes are phenomenal as well.
We get a lot of insight into past, life-altering experiences, helping us understand why certain things happened the way they did. This is such an emotional read, and every one of these characters is not only dealing with internal struggles and grief but also overcoming conflicts with each other while facing the bigger picture, protecting their world from powerful dark forces and navigating their newly growing powers.
I literally want to hand this series out door to door like a salesperson because it’s THAT good. I NEED everyone to tap in immediately lol. I don’t even know what to do with myself while I wait for the next book.

I am utterly ruined.
A 5🌟 MUST read
I cannot truly put into words how excited I was to get my hands on this book. Jessica did such an amazing job with FOTH. Her writing is beautiful and immersive. The fantasy aspect is fresh and well thought out. There's a million books out there about deities and mercenaries and shifters, yet Jessica was able to create something that felt new and exciting, and after Blood of the Lost Gods, I can tell you I have no clue where she will take it next. She absolutely killed us at the end and left us in pieces. But it was so worth it! Only bad part is not having the next book!
Zara and Ronan and top tier MCs that are deep and raw and stick with you! I don't even think we can classify her "side characters" as such because they are so well written. We get many POVs this book and there was not even one that didn't make me excited to read! Even that ONE character's pov was well thought out and I really enjoyed reading!
I am not one to make many notes while reading, but my kindle was highlighted like crazy with amazing quotes because the writing is just that good! Everyone who loves fantasy should read this series. There's the perfect amount of romance and spice!

Ahhh, I just finished my ARC for Blood Of The Lost Gods, and I want to curl into the fetal position and cry 😭
There is so much you learn in book 2 and puzzle pieces that click into place for Zara, Ronan, and their world. Not to mention what my two favorite side characters, Daria and Ares, also learn throughout the book! There is so much that Jessica puts into her books, and each time, I’m just in awe. Also, the cliffhangers 🫣

A stunning story set in a war ravaged world; where we follow complex characters on a journey of grief, healing, redemption and love.

What an incredible read. I continue to adore Zara as a FMC. She is a beautifully tragic representation of grief and perseverance. The healing and growth shown by her and Ronan had me in tears. I was happily surprised by the side characters that are just as interesting and well thought-out, making each chapter engaging and exciting. The romance between both main couples had me giggling and kicking my feet like a mad woman.
The world building is expansive and the writing is so immersive, leaving me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Getting lost in this book was easy and it is refreshing to delve into such a unique world.
The only complaint I had was sometimes certain scenes were over explained.
The mystery was my absolute favourite part. Getting crumbs sprinkled throughout that built on from book one made me so frustrated because I wanted to know more and couldn’t read fast enough!
When a book leaves you contemplating your life choices in silence, you know it’s good. I highly recommend this series and I cannot wait for the next one.

I had to DNF at 85%. I am sorry to say I could not take it anymore. The second book is a mess ..there is too much happening at all times. You cannot enjoy the story at its too packed... it's overwhelming. It feels like you are reading three books in one. Not all the ideas have to be in the same book.

This book was insane in the best way! Blood of Lost Gods is the second book in the Dusk and Dawn series which takes place in a Latin inspired fantasy world.
Blood of Lost Gods follows the main characters as they work through the fallout from the events that occurred in book one! The stakes are higher and the story is filled with action, mystery, longing, vengeance, and love.
Ronan and Zara are on a journey through Ribera, with old and new allies, to better understand their magic. The pair is also dealing with a looming war, grief, and their past.
I love all of the characters, but the vampire general Ares is my favorite. I have a soft spot for an emotionally torn side character. If you love a man that grovels you will love him. He had a lot to prove in this book. And sweet Daria, she surprised me in book one, I was eager to see how her storyline progressed. It did not disappoint, I feel like she will play a vital role in the next installment!
The world and magic system Jessica has developed is unique and I absolutely love it. This series has the perfect balance between plot and romance. This ended on a cliffhanger and I am eager to see what happens next!

The romance ? The battles ? THE BETRAYALS ??? I’m not emotionally ok after this one.

An amazing sequel to an already great fantasy series. I'm in love with these characters and this world, and this book will be pulling at your hearstrings and giving you so many twists and turns.
It was great to dive deeper into the world of Soleira, follow Ronan and Zara as they try to save the continent while also dealing with their maturing powers and what is still brewing between them, and Daria having to overcome Ares's betrayal 😭
And so much emotion even as we find out more about other characters, about Erebus and Ronan's pasts, as more and more dark forces join to take over the continent.
I loved it, even if it hit me where it hurts. Highly recommend the series 🔥❤️

ARC REVIEW: This is book 2 in the Dusk and Dawn series. And let me tell you, this book is exactly what I needed! I am so picky with the fantasy books I read because they have to have a perfect balance of world building, plot, character arcs, and spice and this book delivered just that. I adored watching these characters continue to grow as well as the political moves that they had to navigate in regards to the ending of book one. This is definitely one of my top reads of the year and I look forward to what the author will write next!
In this book, our characters get to explore more of what the continent has been hiding. Zara and Axar are introduced to the surviving people of both guardian realms that had been residing in Damalis. The history of that place has so many callbacks to Latin American culture; the pan dulce, the latin dancing, street tacos, even a Day-of-the-Dead-adjecent holiday with cempasuchil flowers. I loved that parts of my culture were shown off in this book and done with care.
The story overall had me at the edge of my seat. Having to deal with the fallout of Raziel dying and Erebus taking over as High King, Ares’s conquest of Ikarria, Zara and Ronan deciding to bring down Erebus to free the continent, and Daria looking for the dragons… it was exciting to see all of these characters try to pick out the best solution from a bad set of options. And on top of all of that the characters still had to process personal stuff that was still looming over their heads; Zara’s guilt over failing to save her guild, Ronan working through his past with Erebus, and killing his family, Ares’s split loyalty between the High King and the Sombra Quarter, and his betrayal towards Daria, Daria training her power into something beyond what she was capable of while being a suitable ruler for her people.
The romance in this book was sooo delicious. The vulnerability. The longing. The YEARNING!! Listen, I love Ronan, but ARES…that man can yearn!!!! The slow burn between him and Daria that had been building up since book 1… so worth the wait! Zara and Ronans relationship was such a treat. They literally had me smiling at my kindle like a crazy person. The longing they had for each other was chefs kiss.
I will say the last couple chapters had me gasping. And I very much need the author to say psych about a certain someone because there is no way that happened! The book had me crying, screaming, and staring at the wall after that cliffhanger. I adored the world, the growth of the core four and I’m so excited to see what comes next!

Thank you to Good Girls PR and the author for this e-ARC opportunity that took my effing heart out of my chest and stabbed it. I loved every word and minute I spent reading.
We pick up from the first book dealing with the aftermath of all that took place. The bonds between Zara and Ronan are form and we wait for Ares to grovel on his knees to Daria.
Fantasy for me is a difficult genre because it is unfamiliar and world building for me takes time to grasp onto. It was easier with this book because I was familiar to the characters and world order. The language yet again easy to follow and the lore explanations were not shoved in your face at all lightening speed like my previous experiences with this genre.
Jessica Ayala manurers badass warrior women, heartbreak, angst, lust and romance with beautifully charged moments that keep you on your toes throughout the book. I might just be more open to trying more fantasy books because of her writing.
That ending had me sobbing my heart out ya’ll aren’t ready for it. I wasn’t ready for it. I knew something was gonna happen but I did not expect so much pain. So much effing pain.
I initially thought Zara and Ronan would be my favourites but Daria and Ares? Oh my god this pairing? The angst? The pining? The care under the harsh words? Ugh my heart cried for them and with them. I love them your honour.
Beautifully written and executed. I can’t wait to see where the story leads us to, if curses are fulfilled and promises remain broken 👀👀
The subtle plot of romance remains so, it doesn’t take centre stage which works very well for the series. The subtleness has high and immense impact that stays with you for days later.
If you enjoy fantasy this deserves a spot on your reasing lists and if you are new to fantasy and want to dabble into the genre this series should be your first no lies.

This book continues on from Fall of the Horizons and we are immediately back in the action that ended book 1. We're still with Zara, Ronan, and Axar but this time the rebellion has truly begun. They're being hunted but they're also ready to do the hunting. No more bound Horizon but two future Godlings, a Queen, a General, and rebels spanning multiple countries are ready to avenge those the Kings took from them.
I absolutely adore these books. Jessica makes you invested from the beginning and that momentum doesn't slow down at all in book 2. In fact I don't know whose POV I ache for more.
Speaking of aching... the freaking yearning in this book is beyond levels I can even describe. It physically hurt my chest to read from Ares' POV which just made me want MORE. Ronan has the best vulnerable moments but I loved the build up for both of the main couples.
Jessica tackles grief in such a beautiful way throughout the book. The resistance, the denial, the growth beyond. Grief is such a journey and we are taken on a beautiful one in the background of everything else.
And none of that even touches on all of the minor and major battles going on simultaneously with an accumulation that had my jaw on the FLOOR. I am obsessed with this series. Absolutely enraptured.
The ending will have you screaming for the entire last 10%!!!! So!!! Don't say I didn't warn you!!!

This was my second book by Jessica J. Ayala, and wow—she’s outdone herself. I gave book one a solid 4/5, but Blood of the Lost Gods easily jumped to a 4.5/5 for me. Jessica’s writing is so beautiful and immersive, and she made the worldbuilding even clearer and richer this time around. The Latin mythology–inspired lore and action-packed pace made this such a fun, high fantasy read.
What I loved most was the found family vibes and the way every POV felt exciting. Honestly, the characters are so well-written that calling some of them “side characters” feels wrong. Zara and Ronan? Top tier. Deep, raw, unforgettable. And let’s not forget the romance—delicious doesn’t even begin to cover it. Zara and Ronan’s relationship had me grinning like an idiot, and Ares and Daria’s slow burn? The yearning was perfection.
The last few chapters had me gasping out loud, and that cliffhanger… yeah, I’ll be thinking about it until book three. This series just keeps getting better, and I can’t wait to see where Jessica takes it next.

Wow. Just wow. I was so eager to read this next installment in the Dusk and Dawn series and I was not disappointed AT ALL! Ayala showed OUT on this one y'all. Solid spot on my list of top favorite fantasy series I've read, no freakin joke.
First, let me direct you to my review of the first book of this series, Fall of the Horizon, in case you need a refresher on the story or need to be encouraged to read this series (bc you should!)
To be honest, I really have no notes on this book. LOL. It was simply amazing for me. Truly a continuation of a fabulous story. I have the same comments as last time: the relationships in this story are just incredible, organic, realistic; pacing was great; kept me glued to the pages. Well... First of all I'm feeling all sorts of lucky to have received this as an ARC because the ending to book one in this series was a bit cliffhangery - so getting to carry on the stories sooner was amazing!
But also... I think this author has a thing for cliffhangers. And making them bigger/worse/more dramatic/horrific (lol!) as the books go on. If this is where she gets her jollies off, book three is going to be expensive (as therapy will be needed!).
Having said all that, I loved the storylines in this book. Daria and Ares have their own thing going on, Zara and Ronan have their own thing and as much as they're all working together for a common goal, they obtain it separately.
Another big display of FMC badassery, too. Love this for the Santos ladies.
I will wait as long as it takes for these books to be ready for publication... Great stories cannot be rushed!

HOW DARE YOU!
How dare you write a book so good that I am literally salivating to get my hands on the next one.
It is not often a second book blows the first one out of the water. But this book does!
The yearning?! The slow burn! The crescendo to the plot?! Did I mention the YEARNING?!?!
I loved all of it. Everything is so intertwined from the first book, I honestly don’t know where the third book will take us. But I am ready for it.
The character growth is so so good!! Across the board!!
The twists that are twisting?!?!
The animal side kicks are delicious. I want one of my own.
I won’t give anything away but Jessica wrote parts that ripped out my heart and then stomped on it.
Hands down one of the best books I’ve read in 2025.
10/10 recommend.

I was so lost in this book… in the most immersive beautiful way possible! Having read book one a while ago I wasn’t sure if I would remember exactly what happened but Jessica does a great job of refreshing your memory with little reminders through out the book. Which then brought back all the emotions from book one and amplified them. This story is still very plot and politics heavy but the yearning, slow burn is still very much present throughout. Ronan and Zara. Ares and Daria. Axar and I’m not really sure how that will play out. The crossover from the main plot and subplots from Fall of the Horizon blend so well together. Then we add in what’s happening with Erebus, the hunting of Ronan & Zara, and going to Ronans home meeting new amazing side characters it just takes you deeper into the amazing fantasy world. This series is a MUST READ!

I couldn't put this down!! I love the characters and their complex relationships with themselves and the other characters. I love the lush setting and the different magic systems throughout the realms. We get more of Erebus's and Ronan's shared past in this book. Daria has a stronger role and an expanded POV with her and Ares. There's a romantic element to this book, but it's not the focus; the banter between the FMCs and MMCs is top-notch. The yearning is there, and the second chance between Daria and Ares was fantastic. This book pulls you in, and you don't want to put it down or for it to end. Speaking of the ending- I need book 3 ASAP

swear on my life that I saw somewhere this was meant to be a duology, so imagine the absolute betrayal I felt/feel (in the best way possible) at that cliffhanger of all cliffhangers. but so glad there’s more to the series because boyyyy does miss Jayala know how to write not only a FANTASTIC series opener but somehow an even more fantastic sequel.

I can’t even describe how I’m feeling at this moment, WHEW WHAT A JOURNEY. All my emotions were taken through this ride of a story. The changes in POV started out at frustration until you got sucked into that plot too, and didn’t want to go back. Every part of Zara and Daria’s journey was a journey filled with so many different emotions, like longing, anger, grief and heartbreak. One of my favorite details the author wrote was the friendship and ‘bromance’ between the male leads, Ares and Ronan. It’s something so underrated and always goes missing. The men having these vulnerable moments between each other and on their own is so special, since they’re trained to leave all those feelings aside.
I will absolutely be in a slump and dying for the next book 😩

I received a free eARC in exchange for an honest review -- I thought book 1 was amazing but I was NOT prepared for the rollercoaster of emotions that I went through with this next installment. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't be specific - the WAY i GASPED OUT LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to read the second half of the book twice, and will probably read it a third time and revel in its brilliance. The pacing is quick, never a dull moment in the plot - i LOVE the fact that this is a plot-heavy book - the world building is even better than book 1, character development with satisfying pay-offs, multiple POVs that were all well written. I need book 3 asap!!!!!! But for real, I will wait however long it takes - I'm going to say it LOUDER - this is your sign - Read this book!!! It is among the best fantasy series I have read - Do not sleep on this!!!

This sequel totally lived up to the hype. Zara’s story picks right up where book one left off, but now there’s even more at stake. Jessica continues to make the world of Ribera bigger and more intense, and I was hooked from the first chapter. Zara’s mix of heartbreak and determination really got to me. She’s tough but still so human, and watching her grow kept me flipping pages way past bedtime.
My only small complaint? A few parts zipped by so quickly I wanted to soak in the details a bit more. (But that’s maybe because I didn’t want it to end.😅)
If you loved the first book, you’re gonna fly through this one and then immediately wish the next book was already out

3.5 - this had ALL the bones and elements to be god tier, and something’s did hit: Daria’s journey, the magic, the world building, the twists, the stakes. However, pulling down my rating for: the character development was cringey with dialogue that made me roll my eyes, lots of “telling not showing” with lots going on but not bringing me along for the ride and lastly, this book DRAGGED with so many times I read a section going “that could’ve been cut” or “why did this happen now and not earlier”

I have no words, it’s not very often a second book outdoes the first but this one definitely did. The character development here is outstanding and so is the world building. Not to mention the yearning with the main characters. The writing style is impeccable and use of Latin mythology woven in adds so much to the story.
One of the best reads of the year and can’t wait for the rest of the series 🖤
