It’s opening night at the theatre and Addison Harper has front-row seats with Sergeant Jake Murphy. This might just be his perfect date.
The variety show promises spooky Halloween fun, ghoulish drag queens, frightening musical numbers, and the scariest thing of audience participation. Of course, the unlucky victim dragged from the safety of his seat is a mortified Addison. In a production full of twists and turns, he has no idea what’s coming next but nobody could have anticipated witnessing a sudden, absolutely unscripted, and very real death.
A dreadful accident? Or was it foul play? As the curtain falls before a horror-struck audience, Addison Harper finds himself once again in the spotlight at centre stage.
Fright on Stage Right is the latest in a wonderful cosy mystery series set in an enchanting small town nestled amongst stunning New Zealand scenery. Investigate The Milverton Mysteries for a chaotic cast of local busybodies, delicious baked treats, a demanding and disdainful ginger cat, a very slow-burn romance with a rather appealing policeman, and of course… murder!
G. B. Ralph is a Kiwi author of cosy mysteries and romantic comedies. His writing features chaotic yet lovable characters getting into trouble, an astonishing amount of crime, and handsome men falling for each other.
He’s currently documenting the increasingly implausible series of murders sweeping an enchanting small New Zealand town in The Milverton Mysteries, once described as “Agatha Christie, but make it gay.”

G. B. Ralph masterfully blends murder mystery and slow-burning romance into a truly great story that had me engaged the whole time!
It was so good to head back into the world of Milverton and its wonderful inhabitants, revisiting places and getting to meet new people. It felt like coming home and catching up with old friends, especially Miss Mabel and Sargent Hotty McHotty Pants.
The development of the relationship between Addison and Jake was fun to watch, especially when you see how much they are getting to know/trust each other. No longer is Addison as reckless as he once was in answering his questions, and you can see how much Jake trusts in Addison’s ability to seek knowledge.
It was great to engage with the diverse cast of side characters again, especially Miss Mabel and Percy (I really want to get to know Percy better, and through Percy, Great Uncle Herbert). The new characters we met along the way were just as interesting, and I feel like I want to move to Milverton to get to know them all better!
I really enjoyed this story even though it was a bit slow in parts. I love Addison and I admit I was expecting that he would be blamed for the Cilla Slay's death and was glad that he was not a suspect. I love Mabel and would love to have her as a friend and confidant. I also wish that Jake was more open with Addison about his life such as his being now homeless. I did not guess who the murderer was and it made sense but was still a bit sad. I hope we don't have to wait until Septemer 2026 for the next book.
Once again with Addison and Jake. Addison is still somewhat apprehensive about everything, but getting better at handling things! But not Keith so much. He is still courting death, though not so directly involved unlike his bestie Mabel. But there is growth! He heeds Jake’s request to listen but not get too involved - and he does manage to piece together the who by the end. And Jake and Addison do manage a couple of dates, Addison clears out his uncle’s room and solves a problem for Jake - progress!!
The town is putting on a drag queen show with a halloween theme. Addison goes with Jake to the show and during the show the compere is murdered. I love how Addison tries to solve the murder. He does keep Jake informed and as usual I never guessed the killer. Now we have to wait a year until the next book.
I’m really liking the series, but this one just didn’t speak to me the same way others did. I’ll admit it’s probably because of the drag theme running throughout, it’s just not a part of the gay community I relate to (as a gay man myself). I still enjoyed it and will still be picking up the next one when it’s published!
Loved this book! Such a cute, cosy, and joyful read. I’ve really enjoyed all the Milverton Mysteries books. I also really appreciate the local New Zealand setting. I can’t wait for the next one to see what Addison gets up to next!
