Adam Miller follows in his superstar dad’s footsteps, all the way into the NHL as the London Panthers' new Goalie. With immense dedication, talent, and a lot of hard work, Adam is determined to finish his senior year with flying colours. But when his grades slip, everything he's worked so hard for is on the line. Getting tutored by a sassy brunette from his past was not on his list of things.
Riley Griffin is the definition of a good girl; a sarcastic ray of sunshine whose past continues to haunt her. Her only goal this semester is to prioritize her attention on her studies in kinesiology. What could go wrong after putting miles between her and her hometown in Bayfield? Colliding into her brittle rival from back home, the tattooed star hockey player, who turns her world upside down.
Riley knows avoiding Adam is in her best interest; after all, she can't afford to get distracted. However, when Adam pleads for her help, Riley senses a desperation she can't ignore. She's the kind of girl he never thought he'd be interested in, and he's everything she thought she couldn't stand. Suddenly, their teasing starts to border on flirting, and a deeper connection forms through shared trauma. All bets are off once lines are crossed, and unexpected romantic feelings emerge between them, which soon turns to blistering heat. Falling for him would be a mistake, but the only thing he truly can't do is resist her.

I really wanted to like this book, but in all honesty it fell super flat. I am aware that these are college aged characters but a lot of the interactions felt so much younger than college, especially since the MMC is about to graduate and head into the NHL. This book just wasnt for me, I finished it but it was a struggle 🤷♀️
Tropes: 🏒 Hockey Romance 🖤 Frenemies to Lovers 🏒 College Romance 🖤 Slow Burn 🏒 Black Cat FMC x Golden Retriever MMC
I…did not fully enjoy this book 😬 I liked the premise (enemies to lovers, forced proximity, childhood friends), but for some reason, this just didn’t do it for me. I felt it was a bit wordy and a little all over the place in terms of pacing. It was a quick read, and I did enjoy the characters, this just wasn’t it for me
Friends to enemies to lovers. It was good. Probably a bit too long. The FMC has series issues from her last relationship cheating on her. That is really the only inner dialog you get from her and how hot Adam is. I really thought his ex girlfriend Kelsey would have started some actual drama with her dad being the dean but nothing really happened there. The 🌶️ scenes felt almost rushed through. Overall the pacing of the book felt rushed and incredibly slow at times.
So, I was totally here for Riley and Adam's banter.... it was so cute! And OMG, the hockey vibes were EVERYTHING for me! It was a super quick and fun read, and honestly, sometimes that's exactly what I need. They've got this amazing history together, and I was totally feeling what she was trying to do... loved every bit of it!
I really enjoyed this book, I actually couldn’t put it down! I loved the banter between Riley and Adam Also having been in Riley’s position before in a previous relationship, I related a lot to the issues she was having and trying to navigate through.
Never With You follows the unlikely love story of Riley and Adam. They both come from the same small town and ended up going to the same college but hadn't bumped into each other until Riley's Sophomore year because she's avoiding Adam like the plague.
Riley is focused on working, getting good grades and graduating.. what she didn't plan for was having to tutor Adam. & Adam has a HORRIBLE girlfriend. She is a presence throughout the book and honestly, Kaylene did a perfect job of portraying her.
Honestly, Never With You is geared more to an audience of maybe early 20s, late 30s the dialogue and decisions made by the MCs and supporting characters sometimes are rather questionable.
Thank you to the author for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Just wanted to start by saying thank you so much to Kaylene and her team for the opportunity to receive this book as an ARC. I am a sucker for hockey romance, so I’m saying don’t sleep on this series. To say I’m obsessed and can’t wait to watch how the rest of the series unfolds would be an understatement! Who doesn’t love a childhood friends to lovers trope? I also love some witty side characters and I can’t wait for Weston’s book!!! Run don’t walk and get your hands on a copy of this book when it releases January 28th!!
I keep going back and forth on an actual rating. I think I’m going to settle for 3 stars. 3 stars is still good just not my favorite.
The story was cute. Full of enemies to lovers, forced proximity, and he falls first tropes. I truly enjoyed both main characters. Adam is the perfect golden retriever and Riley the perfect black cat.
There was just something missing from the story. The pacing was a little rushed or unexpected. Obviously for a romance we expect a HEA so things are predictable but this one seemed to be a little too predictable. I could predict what was going to happen before every major scene. It shouldn’t be that predictable.
First off thank you to the author for sending me an arc of this book. I really enjoyed it overall. It was kind of all over the place at times and I think some of it could have been cut out and the book would have been better. But the premise was really good. Although this is a college setting book alot of the characters seemed quite immature for how far they were in “life”
Kaylene did an amazing job with this book. I truly felt like I related to a lot in this book and felt everything. I am beyond thankful for this ARC.
My Thoughts: The hurt, love, laughter—she covered it all. There were times I was laughing, smiling, and talking to myself about the scenes in the book, and then just feeling broken for the characters. Throughout the whole book I could relate to it and empathize with what the characters were going through.
Both Adam and Riley were written as perfect as they could be, and watching them both go through hurdles in life just felt even more like real life. You have Riley who hates Adam due to some past stuff as they grew up together, loves horror movies, works at the concession stand, bookworm and super smart and then you have Adam who is dealing with a rocky relationship and needs a tutor otherwise he might get benched. You get to witness a beautiful frienemines to Friendship turn lovers. Let me tell you the sass Riley has! The banter will have you on the eedge of your seat. My Fave thing about Riley is her SASS. (Black Cat FMC)
I felt like Adam was written in a different way than most MMCs and I LOVED it. I loved the way this hockey romance just felt different! The hockey team's dynamic is such a strong family bond and I adore them all—especially Koda and Weston.
The last few chapters had my face smiling and heart filling up because it was just so cute. Adam is on my list of book boyfriends because he’s such a sweet, loyal man. If you want a hockey romance that just hits different, this one is for you.

Favorite Quotes: “You made it safe enough to be myself. Safe enough to share my vulnerability with you, safe to let go. You’re my safe space, Riley.”
“When I look at you, I see everything I ever wanted—love, peace, home.”
"I remember the first time we started talking again and realizing that you were the reason I got my laugh back. The reason I fell asleep with a smile on my face. And the reason why my problems didn't seem so bad."
Thank you Kaylene for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book follows hockey player Adam Miller and Riley Griffin. They have known each other most of their lives due to both of their families being involved in the sports world. In high school, Riley dated one of Adam’s close friends, who cheated on her repeatedly. The cheater claimed that Adam knew about and helped with the duplicity, which makes Riley feel even more betrayed. After all, she was friends with Adam first so he should’ve shown some loyalty. So her hatred for Adam began. In college, Adam needs Riley’s help to pass his classes. He already has an NHL contract he just has to maintain his position on his college team and graduate. His grades jeopardize that so he asks Riley for help. He also has a long time girlfriend and things aren’t going great with that situation either. Riley reluctantly agrees to help Adam. She also sees his girlfriend in a compromising position with someone else and tells Adam. She’s fully aware of the pain that cheating causes and she doesn’t want Adam to be the last to know like she was when she was cheated on. Tutoring and the shared experience of being betrayed cause feelings to develop between Adam and Riley. Riley doesn’t trust these feelings or Adam so she pushes him away. Adam has to work to get Riley to see he is more than he was in high school and worth taking a chance on. I gave this 4 stars because when Riley told Adam about his girlfriend, he did nothing. He believed Riley, caught his girlfriend in a few lies and endured her horrible treatment but still stayed with her. He didn’t break up with her even though he had been wanting to do it for a while. Then when he saw it with his own eyes, he seemed truly shocked and devastated. It was almost as if he didn’t have any warning it was happening and like he hadn’t spent the entire book wanting to break up with her. Like from the first time we as the reader meet him. He’s literally looking for a good excuse to break up most of the book. And then afterwards he immediately decides Riley is “the ONE”. The story was enjoyable and I was invested in the story but that part just wasn’t clicking for me.

ARC Review ✨ First, a huge thank you to Kaylene for the opportunity to read this book as an ARC 🤍
This story truly had everything: hurt, love, laughter, and moments that completely broke me. There were scenes where I was smiling, laughing, and literally talking to myself… and others where I just sat there feeling shattered for the characters. The emotional range in this book was so real, and I found myself deeply relating to and empathizing with what Riley and Adam were going through.
Riley and Adam start as high school friends / family friends who eventually become enemies. Years later, they reconnect at university only to find themselves completely at odds. Adam is the university’s star goalie, on track for the NHL, but his future is on thin ice when his grades start slipping. Riley? She’s brilliant, sharp-tongued, works at the concession stand, loves horror movies, is a total bookworm, and absolutely cannot stand Adam because of their complicated past.
Watching both of them navigate their personal struggles felt incredibly authentic. Riley’s pain, Adam’s pressure, the misunderstandings, the growth it all felt like real life unfolding on the page. What starts as pure tension turns into a beautifully done frenemies → friendship → lovers journey that had me hooked.
And Riley… HER SASS. Top tier. Elite. The banter between these two will have you glued to the pages, and Riley’s Black Cat energy stole my heart completely. Adam, on the other hand, is the ultimate Golden Retriever MMC soft, devoted, and quietly falling hard.
This was emotional, swoony, and so satisfying from start to finish.
What to Expect: 🏒 Hockey romance 🤜🤛 Frenemies to lovers 📖 Dual POV 🐈⬛ Black Cat FMC 🦮 Golden Retriever MMC 🗣️ Witty banter 🔥 Slow burn 🎓 University setting
“When I look at you, I see everything I ever wanted—love, peace, home.”
Never With You is one of those stories that quietly sneaks up on you and then suddenly has you fully invested—heart, nerves, and all. Kaylene McPhee delivers a slow-burn, second-chance romance that feels deeply personal and emotionally grounded.
Adam Miller and Riley Griffin have history. They were inseparable as kids, their families intertwined, their bond effortless—until one relationship choice changed everything and their friendship faded into something unresolved and aching. Years later, fate throws them back together at the same university, and the tension between what they were and what they could be is impossible to ignore.
Riley being tasked with tutoring Adam is such a deliciously painful setup. Adam’s future—his place on the hockey team and his shot at being drafted—rests on passing, and Riley is the last person he expected to rely on. Even better (or worse?), Riley has sworn off hockey players entirely. The proximity, the forced interactions, the lingering hurt—it all builds so naturally.
What really worked for me was how real their emotional struggle felt. You can feel the tension brewing every time they’re together. Adam’s internal conflict, especially as his current relationship begins to unravel, is handled with so much care. He’s torn between loyalty, guilt, and feelings that never truly went away, and McPhee doesn’t rush that reckoning.
The chemistry is undeniable, but it’s the emotional depth that makes this story shine. It’s about timing, forgiveness, and whether two people can find their way back to each other after growing apart. Never With You is tender, angsty, and quietly powerful—a must-read for anyone who loves childhood-friends-to-lovers with real stakes and real heart.
If you enjoy hockey romance with emotional weight and a slow-burn payoff, this one is absolutely worth picking up.
Never With You is a standalone hockey romance. I've been following Kaylene from the start and I can confidently say that this is her best work yet. Her writing has absolutely skyrocketed from her first book to now. I really enjoyed the story in this one, I truly felt how much of her heart she poured into this book. I felt the attention and care she spent on each character, their interactions, their emotions and their inner turmoils. I just thought this story felt real, relatable and not overly filled with drama and miscommunication which I really appreciated!
Riley & Adam were fantastic characters. They were both so easy to fall in love with. They both had their struggles, but I loved watching them overcome them, especially Riley. I do wish that Riley would've opened up to Adam earlier on and stopped pushing him away, I felt the push and pull dragged a little. Although at the same time she was hyper relatable as she was just guarding her heart (it's me being selfish of wanting to see more of them together 😂). I adored how after both of them communicated so well and how they grew together. Their chemistry was absolutely off the charts. The way this man knew Riley was it and he just needed her to see it, he never gave up or played games and I loved that. The supportive friends and family were absolutely everything!
Overall, this is definitely my favorite Kaylene novel. The story was engaging, easy to read with fantastic characters that you just want to pull out of the book and hug. A beautifully written love story that is definitely worth checking out.
✨️ Thank you to @kaylenemcphee for my gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Honestly, what is not to love about Adam and Riley? I am completely obsessed with their banter, their chemistry, and the way they come together through all of Riley’s struggles. Adam never wavers - he stays, he listens, and he gives her affirmation after affirmation, which was so refreshing to read.
His ex is… a piece of work, to say the least, but that experience ends up helping Adam better understand what Riley went through with her own ex (who also happens to be Adam’s ex–best friend). That emotional overlap added so much depth to their connection.
I also really appreciated that neither of them had the kind of traumatic upbringings that seem to dominate so many hockey romances lately. Both Adam and Riley have supportive families, and honestly? It was such a pleasure to read something that felt warm and grounded in that way.
The writing style was easy to follow and did a great job of showing character growth and emotion on the page. As for the spice, I’d rate it around a 3.5 (as you well know by now, it’s not really my thing).
Overall, this was a genuine page-turner, and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read this as an ARC. If you’re in the mood for a college hockey romance with loads of banter, a touch of dislike-to-love, and serious chemistry, this one is definitely for you.
This book put me through the full emotional wringer. I laughed, smiled, talked to myself like a crazy person… and then there were moments where I just had to stop and sit with how much it hurt for these characters. The emotions felt real, messy, and honestly heavy in the best way. I connected so deeply with Riley and Adam and everything they were carrying.
Riley and Adam go way back. They were close growing up, high school friends, family friends, and then everything fell apart, turning them into enemies. Years later, they run into each other again at university, and the tension is still very much there. Adam is the star hockey goalie with NHL dreams, but his future starts slipping when his grades tank. Riley is smart, sarcastic, works at the concession stand, loves horror movies, is a total bookworm, and wants absolutely nothing to do with Adam after their past.
This is one of those books that sneaks up on you. You don’t even realize how invested you are until your chest starts feeling tight and you’re rooting way too hard for them. Never With You is a slow-burn, second-chance romance that feels emotional, personal, and grounded. If you love hockey romance with depth, tension, and feelings that actually hurt a little, I definitely recommend picking this one up. Huge thank you to Kaylene for letting me read this as an ARC
First, thank you so much for allowing me to ARC this book!
Secondly, I did enjoy this story overall. The beginning pulled me in right away—the setup, the tension, the banter, all of it worked really well and had me excited to see where the author would take things. The pacing felt strong through the first half, especially as the dynamic between the FMC and MMC started to take shape. Their mix of friendship, rivalry, and reluctant chemistry was fun to follow and had so much potential.
Around the 40–50% mark, though, things shifted a bit too quickly for my taste. The jump from friends/enemies to lovers felt sudden, almost like the relationship skipped a few emotional beats that would’ve made the transition feel more natural and earned. I found myself wanting just a little more buildup—more moments where their connection deepened before everything escalated.
That being said, it was a cute book. The vibe was sweet, the characters had charm, and the overall story was enjoyable. Even with the pacing hiccup, I still had a good time reading it and appreciated the lighter, fast-moving feel.
A solid, cute read with a fun premise—just wished for a touch more development near the end.
I loved this. Riley doesn’t have anything positive to say about Adam. He had a front row seat to her high school heartbreak, and she thinks he was involved. Adam has a girlfriend, who is clearly only with him for the clout, and she’s a jealous little witch (with a b) who has no care for his feelings at all. He’s at danger of failing, so he’s been told by his teacher and his coach that he needs a tutor. Enter Riley….
This enemies (at least on her side) to lovers coming of age college romance is absolutely gorgeous. Adam is pure golden retriever energy to Riley’s black cat, and the snark/banter was great. There was a bit of angst along the way - you know what’s going to happen, and you just have to hold on for the ride… but it was mostly a good progression through with them building a beautiful friendship before finally progressing to love.
It wasn’t just Riley and Adam who hold you attention. West inserted his personality at the best of times, and their entire group of friends were great. I hope this continues with a few more getting their HEA, because I will certainly be continuing this….
Thanks Kaylene, for the opportunity to read in advance.
Kaylene McPhee did an amazing job at writing this book. I could feel her passion coming off the pages. She gave so much attention to the feelings and inner turmoil of both characters . Riley was beautifully written. I kept rooting for her to win throughout the book. A lot of times I just wanted to hug her and tell her everything would be okay. Adam was amazing. He was written extremely well. He had so much confidence but I never thought he was full of himself. He brought a different vibe than MMC’s in my prior readings. I thought this was book was believable…what I mean by this is that as I read I never really stopped and said yeah right. I enjoy books that give real life experiences, it makes me feel like yeah we all go through the same things just in different ways. The pacing of the book was perfect, I felt like I had the time to get to know Riley and Adam and how they approached life given the obstacles set before them. Highly recommend this book to everyone simply because it’s amazing and real!
I have mixed feelings about this book! first, I did love the story and by the end I loved the characters as well. The story and concept are what kept me reading and make me wish I could rate it higher. The inner monologue for both characters took me out of the story quite a bit and was a bit all over the place, wordy at times, and seemed repetitive in some parts. This book is a glacially slow burn but it made sense in the end. Some of the dialogue and internal monologue was a bit too juvenile for college students. this was most likely just not a style of writing I could enjoy.
I want to reiterate that the story itself was good, the character growth was great, and the friends of our MMC and FMC were fantastic.
if you like slow burns, frenemies, and second chance romance, give it a shot! just a little too slow paced and wordy for me :)
I received an advance reader copy from the author. All opinions are my own
I am not usually a hockey romance person but I could not put this story down from the moment I picked it up!
The chemistry between Riley and Adam is undeniable from the very beginning, even if they refuse to admit to it.
Watching as they go from enemies, to frenemies, to finally admitting long buried feelings for each other as they rebuild a friendship that was once thought to be gone forever, is the epitome of a full circle romance.
Watching Adam grow as a person and slowly help Riley see that not all love has to end in heartbreak is so sweet.
And let's not forget about Adam punching Zach in the face! He absolutely deserved so much worse for the things he dared to say about Riley!
And that ending?! Seeing Adam and Riley get the hea that they truly deserve, and knowing that everything truly did work out in the end, makes the slow burn of this book so worth the wait!
I cannot wait to read more from this author!

Troupes: - college hockey romance - childhood friends/enemies/friends/lovers - obsessed MMC - sassy FMC - forced proximity - slow burn - contemporary - cheating mention but not between main characters
I am honestly not sure with this book. I liked how the story shows genuine fears and walls after being cheated on and how losing yourself to the negative vibes can influence how you feel. I also really struggled, it felt like it just dragged. It was nice to see Riley and Adam's connection bloom into what it becomes after pretty much being forced together. It was also nice to see how the team has Riley's back after her ex comes back. There is a real honesty in these characters and the friendships the have as well. Overall a good little read but maybe alittle to slow for my liking
Childhood friends - enemies - friends - lovers! This book was a great representation of young love and finding your way back to your person! I loved Adam and Riley’s story, It was such a change from the usual hockey I read about, I love a good enemies to lovers story, the found friendships with the teammates and helping each other get over their previous relationships after experiencing heartbreak. I liked how their friendship evolved over time and just them becoming friends again after years apart and how they truely became happier just being around each other! If you love collage hockey romance with only a small amount of spice this is the perfect book for you!
I can wait to see where this series goes and am dying to read Weston’s story hehe
I went through a few different emotions while reading this. At first it felt like the characters were a little too chaotic in their thoughts, almost feeling manic with their back and forth thinking- it was hard to tell if it was intentional or if some of it just didnt get edited out. As it went on I started to really enjoy the slow burn (and it is slowww, about 250 pages before the good stuff starts), but it did feel a little long, there wasn’t enough conflict or plot at the end to feel like all of it was necessary. I think this book would have been perfect if some of the time being together with his ex was cut shorter and then less time once they were on doing menial things and thinking about mushy stuff over and over. Overall, I enjoyed but just a little long and mushy for my personal taste! 3.75 stars.
If your looking for a cute hockey romance about a goalie and his tutor, this book is for you!!
I absolutely devoured this book! Read it in one sitting! Goalies have always been my favorite to read about, so when I realized Adam was one I was so so excited!! He’s truly such a sweetheart and has a heart of gold! Riley & Adam have the cutest relationship with such good banter!! I love the way they can have deep conversations but also be good balls together! They both went through so much before finding their happy ending together, and I truly think it made their relationship stronger! I truly loved their story and I think you will too!🥰🧡

Never With You is a sweet hockey romance. However, there is not much hockey action if this is what you are looking for. I struggled to get into Never With You, however I was hooked once there was more interaction between the 2 main characters. I especially liked the tension between the FMC and MMC and the banter between FMC and the team. Some of the things I didn’t like was MMC inability to want to see what was happening with his girlfriend and the locker room scene with the jersey which just felt weirdly controlling. I absolutely loved the scene at MMC’s home for thanksgiving where we see the possibility of a future. I also liked seeing the trust build between the characters and learning what a healthy relationship is. Overall this is a quick read and will appeal to those who like an enemies to lovers/childhood friends trope.
Friends to enemies to lovers, opposites attract, good girl / ray of sunshine / hockey player / playboy / childhood friends/ forced proximity/ forbidden / second chances and all the feels . Oh boy was I so pleasantly surprised at how much I absolutely loved this story . Being that this was my very first time reading one of Kaylenes books , I really was not sure what to expect . That being said , I could not have loved Adam and Kelsey more . Both so likable and relatable. Their story had it all . Moments that made you smile and laugh out loud and others that just pulled on all your heartstrings and had you crying, yelling and cheering so freaking hard . This was such a fun yet emotional love story that will keep you up reading well into the early morning hours
