A Surprise Baby Firefighter Romance from Amazon Bestselling Author Daphne Elliot
Nine months ago, I had one perfect, reckless night with Jasper Lawrence, the tall, tattooed firefighter who made me feel fearless. I told myself it was a mistake I’d never repeat.
Then he finds me at the Maple Festival… in labor with our surprise baby.
The best part? I had no idea I was pregnant.
Now Jasper is everywhere. The two of us stumble through new parenthood together. And he doesn’t just step up, he moves in. Almost. He pitches a tent in my backyard and sleeps outside so he’s never far away from us. He’s a shirtless, helpful menace who cooks, cleans, and cuddles our son. He makes me feel safe, seen, and wanted. And I hate how much I love it.
Every time I shove him away, he shows back up, golden retriever energy and all, with coffee and pastries in tow, ready to carry the baby, the groceries, and occasionally me.
I came to Maplewood, Vermont, to discover my independence. But it’s hard to keep my distance when the town’s been shaken by danger, the scars from my past refuse to stay buried, and the firefighter I should absolutely avoid keeps setting my world on fire.
Turns out the biggest threat to me in America’s most charming small town might be the man who won’t stop rescuing me.
Author’s Sap & Secrets is a small-town romance featuring a curvy black cat, a tattooed golden retriever, and a (very cute) surprise baby. If you enjoy acts of service, small-town shenanigans, and maple syrup madness, you will not be disappointed.
Series Welcome to Maplewood, Vermont. America’s Most Charming Small Town has some dark, sticky secrets. Come for the maple syrup, festivals, and cheese wars; stay for swoon.
In High School, Daphne Elliot was voted “most likely to become a romance novelist.” After spending the last decade as a corporate lawyer, she has finally embraced her destiny. Her small town steamy novels are filled with flirty banter, sexy hijinks, and lots and lots of heart.
Daphne is a coffee-drinking, hot-sauce loving introvert who spends all her free time in her garden. She lives on a small farm in New England with her husband, two kids, two dogs, twelve backyard chickens and a hive of Italian honeybees.
Daphne Elliott always delivers cozy, small town romances, and Saps and Secrets fits right into that comfort read lane. The small town setting was charming, and I genuinely loved the surprise pregnancy trope, one I will never get tired of. The MMC was a standout for me. His willingness to step up and do whatever it took to support her, even while she kept pushing him away, was really sweet and swoony.
That said, there were a few elements that pulled me out of the story. The murder subplot in particular felt a bit extra and unnecessary for the overall vibe of the book, and some other moments left me feeling mildly frustrated rather than fully invested.
Still, the epilogue definitely caught my attention, and I am intrigued enough to continue the series to see how things unfold next. A solid 3 star read with tropes I love, even if not everything fully worked for me.
I received an ARC of this book from the author’s agency, and I am so glad I did because I can already tell this new series is going to be something special. Sap and Secrets gives you grumpy sunshine romance, small town charm, and a murder mystery simmering in the background. It sounds like a lot, but Daphne Elliott blends it all together in a way that feels fun and addictive.
The story pulls you in right away. A surprise baby reveal happens at the Maple Festival, and while Evie is trying to process that life-changing moment, a murder is unfolding in the same town. It is chaotic in the best way and sets the tone for everything that follows.
Evie is the grump here, and she has every reason to be. Her family never supported her. Her father spent years calling her things like fat and loser, and that kind of cruelty sticks with you. She carries those wounds into adulthood, and she is scared to let anyone get close because she is convinced they will treat her the same or disappear when she needs them. Watching her try to rebuild her life in this new town is emotional and relatable.
Then there is Jasper. He is a full cinnamon roll golden retriever of a man. He works at the fire department and on his family’s farm, which might be connected to the murder. He and Evie had a one night stand, and when he finds out he has a son, he steps up immediately. He sleeps in a tent outside so he can be close without invading her space. He sends her coffee every morning. He shows up every time she calls. He is patient and steady and determined to be there for both Evie and baby Vincent. She is hesitant, and even when she starts to let her walls down, things do not magically get easier. That slow, careful shift in their relationship is one of the best parts of the book.
I also want to give Daphne Elliott a huge shout out for her representation. She continues to write plus size heroines with depth and heart, and this book includes thoughtful PCOS and PTSD representation that feels natural and respectful. It is the kind of inclusivity I want to see more of in romance.
I devoured this book. It is warm, heartfelt, a little twisty, and full of characters you want to root for. If this is the energy for the rest of the series, I am absolutely ready for more
What a delightful surprise this story was! Imagine Gilmore Girls and Bourbon & Proof had a baby - this is exactly what you’d get.
There’s a touch of mystery, a journey of self-discovery, and a quirky small town where everyone knows everyone’s business… but also shows up when it really matters.
And did I mention there’s a firefighter and a surprise birth?! Because yes - that prologue will grab you immediately and refuse to let go.
Thank you to Daphne and her team for sending me an E-arc!
The surprise baby trope is personally a trope I enjoy; only a few people are able to execute it in a manner that doesn't feel repetitive or unoriginal. Daphne was definitely able to succeed in writing a great surprise baby romance.
Evie has PCOS and was told by doctors that, due to her medical condition, she was basically infertile and could never be pregnant.
Evie is used to being on her own; having a complex relationship with her family has taught her that the only person who will ever have her back is herself. Evie has recently started a new chapter in her life, she has finally escaped NYC to restart and settle down to her new job in the sweetest small town in Vermont. She's taking care of herself and has a steady close group of friends, she expects to finally live a tranquil life.
One wild night stand and nine months later, she's unknowingly going into labor in a small town's pizzeria. An emergency call is made, and the first responder on sight? Well, it happens to be the very same firefighter she slept with and the father of her surprise baby!
Jasper, the firefighter and baby daddy is basically a golden retriever with the patience of a saint. He is quick to step in and becomes the father every man should be. He assists in diaper changes, house chores, and consistently shows up for Evie and the baby.
Jasper and Evie are a slow burn; Evie has to learn to trust, and Jasper learns to be patient. As surprise co-parents, they both learn that despite their fears, they are both amazing parents who show up for the baby boy. Their romance is honestly the sweetest. My favorite thing about this romance is that Jaspers relience, this man literally sleeps in a tent outside in respect of Evie's boundaries and stays there every night to help to take care of the baby, but Evie as well.
I think what really brought down this book for me was the mystery plot; there wasn't a balance between the romance and mystery. If this strictly had been a romance, I'm sure my review would've been different but there were some attributes of the mystery that didn't make sense to me.
I'm inherently a plotical person, I'm a Bisexual Mexicana reader and reviewer, so there were some parts of the book that left me questioning some details of the book. In this small town, there's been a murder, and unfortunately, cops happen to be involved. One of them makes a consistent appearance, and Jasper is friends with him as well.
I understand that first responders have relationships with cops due to the nature of their work, but as I said, my personal beliefs and values are also going to be reflected in my reviews for this book. I'm ACAB, therefore I don't believe or support cops in any way. The police chief in this book is talked about in a friendly manner. His name is Nolan, and it seems that this book is teasing perhaps a romance between him and one of Evie's friends, which is a complete turn-off as a BIPOC reader.
In continuation, Jasper makes a mention of the "Green Mountain Boys" which is a militia group formed in the 1770's, I did some brief research on them, and they basically are known for fighting against New York settlers. They now today have ties with the national guard and who fought during the American Revolution. Etan Allen, known for funding the Green Mountain Boys, isn't directly tied to owning slaves, but his daughter was and his brother, Levi allen as well.
Ethan Allen's daughters participantion in owning slaves was recognized in 2020, and there is actually a plaque that acknowledges Lavania (kept as a housekeeper) and her son, Francis Parker in Burlington, Vermont.
This isn't shared in the book by any means, which is interesting but I think it's important context to share and history to share.

Critical thinking is a must! I wouldn't be the reviewer or the reader that I am without pointing this out. Overall, a cute romance but the nuaince behind having cop characters and mentions of historical figures needs to be recognized.
First I want to give a huge thank you Daphne Elliot and The Author Agency for providing me with an arc. This has been promoted all over my Instagram and I’ve been dying to get my hands on it. So when I got that email I felt like I had received the best early birthday present.
𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: 4 ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️
My initial thoughts: (PS this only my second Daphne Elliot book) but after reading this it will not be my last. This book was such a cute read from beginning to end. And If it’s any indicator for how much I enjoyed it, I devoured it in less than 48 hours. Now I’m a sucker for a firefighter romance. But I will admit I was skeptical with the accidental pregnancy trope. However, the way it was handled here was perfect. Neither of them of knew. So we got to watch them both stumble as well as succeed.
Our MMC Jasper is the embodiment of golden retriever boyfriend. I adored him and this man deserves the world. His positive outlook on life and pure devotion to Vincent & Evie is beautiful. I love that he let Evie take her time and worked slowly to push down her walls. Why can’t Jasper exist in real life?!?!
Then of course we have our FMC Evie. Boy oh boy our girl has been through it. I love that she was essentially the “grump” in this relationship. Typically it’s always the female being the sunshine one. But I loved the role reversal. She has not had it easy growing up. But through all her trauma she continues to persevere and put herself and her son first. Her strength and resilience is inspiring and I related to her on so many levels.
Now the only reason I have this book a 4⭐️ instead of 5 was for two reasons. (PS I’m being nitpicky don’t judge me) Number 1, I was not a big fan of the background murder mystery accruing in the story. I felt like it took too much of the story and all I wanted to do was get back to Jasper & Evie’s relationship progression. Essentially I just wanted more of this perfect couple. Number 2, now I’m going to have to be a bit vague here because spoilers. But some of the ending relationship drama plot points felt rushed and then just brushed over. I had to go back and re-read to make sure I didn’t miss anything but I like we were just going to sweep past that like nothing happened. Cool cool.
Now even with that said. I still throughly loved and enjoyed this book. This series is off to a great start and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Especially after we introduced to Josh and Celine. So with 100% certainty I recommend this book! Please check it out when it releases January 26th
Thanks to Daphne Elliot for providing the eARC. This is my honest opinion.
When Life Throws Secrets Your Way
In 'Sap & Secrets' Evie suddenly collapses in pain. Jasper, who works for the fire department and ambulance service, is called to her side. It soon becomes clear that Evie is in labor, completely unaware that she is pregnant. To her shock, Jasper, someone she isn’t in a relationship with, is the father of the baby. The story follows how they navigate this unexpected situation, from uncertainty to the vulnerability of their emotions.
Daphne Elliot writes in a smooth and vivid style, making the atmosphere of the story immediately tangible. The combination of nature, secrets, and subtle underlying tension gives 'Sap & Secrets' a distinct and original tone. The small town setting and the maple trees on the farm are described so vividly that it feels as if you are walking through them yourself. The gentle pacing allows time to get to know the characters and their emotions, with a clear focus on mood and character development.
Evie and Jasper are layered characters, and their emotions and hidden motives add depth that makes the story feel truly human. The tension between them is felt just beneath the surface, and the subtle way their feelings are portrayed makes it almost tangible. The supporting characters could have been developed a bit more, but they still contribute to the story’s dynamic.
Themes such as trust, hidden truths, and personal growth run throughout the narrative. 'Sap & Secrets' is a captivating story in which emotions and secrets are at the heart, with moments of recognition and small surprises that linger long after reading.
Secret pregnancy | Unexpected father | Small town drama | Hidden secrets | Emotional tension | Personal growth | Family dynamics | Slow-burn romance | Nature as setting
ARC review! thank you for letting me in on the secret early!
this book was a solid 2.5 for me,.
love the surprise pregnancy angle, its one of my favourite tropes - surprise to everyone including MMC was definitely a first for me.
This book had a lot of potential and I feel like there were a few things that let it down for me.
whilst I loved a lot of the characters, and fell in love with the town of Maplewood it was a bit of a disjointed read.
you'd be mid stream of consciousness about one topic, and it would strangely side bar into something else. even the streams of consciousness were a bit too.. not how an inner monologue would work? not sure how to describe it. over explained?
a lot of stuff was really factual and accurate, which I loved. The baby milestones and hormones and breastfeeding scenarios etc.
what I would REALLY have loved is a better focus on the crime sub plot. it's barely touched upon. you don't get into the mystery and the intrigue of it all very much and then all of a sudden at 90-something percent a barely mentioned character is arrested and it is still unclear why. not sure if its part of a grand plan across the series, but I finished thinking "that can't be it, that isn't where it ends" i saw a whole bunch of missed opportunities to really hone in on what zi presume is a big ag coverup plot.
it was a lot of those little mundane baby life scenes with a dash of crime in the very distant background. there was excess detail where their could have been implied actions, and then other things were left unanswered.
the love story was very insta-love and from the on-set it was a case of 'how will they?' rather than 'will they?' and I feel like that meant it needed a stronger murder sub plot to keep you engaged. I did enjoy watching the healing journey though.
as a nursing mum a few of the sex scenes gave me a small ick, but everyone is different so I tried not to factor that into it.
I am hoping that book 2 REALLY expands into the murder plot, rather than just the back and forth of daily life, if it picks up the thread at all.
I know its the first book, so it was a set up for the series to come but it was ALOT of names and characters and their back stories to throw out. could have done with some surface level introductions that get fleshed put in future books.
it felt rather rushed, and also contradictory. Jasper is a play boy, but no evidence of that? no run ins with other women, etc. love that he steps up but he is honestly so obscenely available and helpful and dependable ad you have Frankie says "he isn't good enough" ? maybe compared to Superman, but even then.. what?
overall I did enjoy it, despite what it may seem like in this review. maplewood is definitely the kind of place I picture when I think of small town Vermont.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I will read anything Daphne Elliot writes, so I was beyond excited to dive into Sap & Secrets, especially since it kicks off a brand new series. Overall, I really liked this book because it was cute, fun, and had a lot of sweet moments, even if it wasn’t totally without its frustrations.
First, I have to give major props for the PCOS, infertility, and plus size representation with Evie. That meant a lot to me, and I loved seeing those experiences handled thoughtfully. Evie is also a genuinely good mom, and I appreciated how fiercely she loved her son and wanted to protect her little bubble.
That said… Evie really tested my patience at times. I fully understand that she’s been through a lot, but there were moments where she felt unnecessarily cruel to Jasper. It’s his child too, and sometimes she acted like it wasn’t. I mean, she’s fine with this man sleeping in a tent outside just so he can be close, but not too close? That rubbed me the wrong way more than once.
Once she finally started letting her guard down though, things improved a lot. Her chemistry with Jasper got better, softer, and more believable, and I enjoyed their dynamic much more in the second half.
And Jasper… OMG. He is EVERYTHING. Truly one of the sweetest, most supportive, golden retriever energy book boyfriends out there. Helpful, patient, acts of service king, amazing dad energy... absolute perfection. He deserved the world, honestly.
The small town vibes, the maple festival chaos, and the overall cozy but slightly suspenseful atmosphere were a lot of fun, and I’m definitely intrigued by Maplewood and its secrets. While this one had a few issues for me, I still enjoyed it and I’m very hopeful I’ll love the next book in the series!
Thank you to Daphne Elliot and The Author Agency for the eARC of this book.
I had the pleasure of receiving this as an e-ARC and voluntarily will be giving my honest review. Sap & Secrets is a small town romance with a firefighter MMC and FMC who has a surprise pregnancy with PCOS and wasn’t able to get pregnant. Love their love hate relationship and their chemistry!! I cant wait to see what happens next to see how things turn out!! Chefs kiss Daphne Elliott!!
“Sap & Secrets is a small-town romance featuring a curvy black cat, a tattooed golden retriever, and a (very cute) surprise baby. If you enjoy acts of service, small-town shenanigans, and maple syrup madness, you will not be disappointed.”
First, I just want to say thank you for selecting me to be an ARC recipient. I saw the blurb and knew it would be right up my alley.
This book gives you the small town romance that makes you feel that sense of cozy comfort while also giving you a murder mystery twist.
As someone with PCOS I loved the representation and how this book shows it how unpredictable it can be. Following along with Evie’s growth and Jasper’s loyalty was an awesome feeling. Both characters grew so much not only on their own but together as well.
I am excited for the next book, and to be right back in Maplewood.
Tropes: One Night Stand She Didn't Know She Was Preggers Firefighter MMC Plus Size FMC Slow Burn Small Town ____________________ Thanks to Daphne Elliot and The Author Agency for the ARC! I received an advance copy of the book and am leaving an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I was excited to read this book because not only was it an accidental pregnancy but it was a surprise baby...FOR HER! Evie doesn't realize she's pregnant until she's in full blown labor. Jasper responds to her medical emergency as an EMT firefighter and that's when he learns it's his baby! This book starts off with a bang and I couldn't wait to see where it went from there.
The most intriguing and interesting part of the book what seeing how both Evie and Jasper learn to navigate parenthood. Jasper is ALL IN from moment one and really devotes himself to being there for Evie and the baby. He even camps out in her backyard in a tent to be closer to them! Evie doubts her abilities as a mom, stemming from a lifetime of being told she's a disappointment and not good enough from her dad. Loads of childhood trauma shaped her worldview and determination to do it all on her own.
That being said, I did get irritated with Evie from time to time, I feel like she was harsh and hurtful towards Jasper. She couldn't get out of her own way and would not let Jasper in to be there for her, though she constantly reminds herself that he is a GOOD DAD. I wanted to shake her so many times to lighten up and allow other people to help. She eventually opens up to him and fully embraces his place in their little family.
This is the first book in the Maplewood series and I loved seeing a new small town and all the quirky characters. Basil with his brie! The cheese wars! It was everything I love about a small town. I can't wait to see more of the town and the people in it. Jasper's brother Josh seems to be set up for a book of his own and I can't wait to read about the grumpy farmer.
This was a fun read and a great introduction to a new series. I always love reading Daphne Elliot and her men are so swoon worthy. I am here for it. A solid start to a new series, would recommend.
From the moment u read the blurb I knew I was going to love this book so much, and actually, when I received the email with the arc, I almost throw my phone away because I was so excited!!!
I loved Jasper and Evie so much 💖 as someone who’s struggling with PCOS, I was crying happy tears with the firsts chapters because like Evie, I’ve been told that maybe I won’t be able to have a baby, so when she had baby Vincent and gave us the most beautiful line the moment he saw him in her arms I was crying my eyes out 🥹❤️🩹 ny heart was so full and it was only chapter one!! And also like her, I have PTSD thanks to my father 😩 so yup, I was seeing a lot of myself in Evie, and I hurt for her, but also I was so happy for her because she fought her fears and insecurities and all those bad things her father conditioned her to think about herself, and Jasper was there being so frigging patient with her, showing up not only with words but with actions, giving her time and space and attention and working with her to became a family and it was so powerful and so beautiful and I was so happy for them because Jasper is soooooo perfect!!!
He had a reputation of having fun 👀 but the moment he knew Vincent was his after a very shocking announcement haha he was all in, he was so invested and devoted to his little baby and Evie, and he knew he will do anything to be the best dad for him and the best partner for Evie 🥹❤️🩹
This story is so close to my heart and it will be forever be one of my favorites now ✨
Also I enjoyed the plot and now I’m invested in the characters involved in it and I can’t wait to read more about them, especially Frankie and chief Nolan 🙂↔️
Also, can I have already Josh’s book?! I mean, either that little hint of his story in the epilogue I was craving for more!! I’m pretty sure the new kindergarten teacher will have him in his toes and I’m soooooo ready to read about them! Also because I’m really interested in reading about her little boy ❤️🩹
Thank you so much to author Daphne Elliot and The Author Agency for gave the chance to read this book early 😩💖
Surprise Pregnancy / He Falls First and Hard, but She’s not too sure
This was another great book by Daphne Elliot. I loved the concept of how pregnancy and a baby played a role in this book. It wasn’t too much, it was just the right amount for those people who don’t enjoy the trope. Personally I loved it. I appreciated the way the two characters were imperfect individuals who came together as a perfect pairing. They brought out the best in each other for their own individual personal growth. I LOVED the way that Jasper helped Evie through her childhood PTSD. Yes I will say her overthinking got to be a bit much, however it needed to be told that way so the reader could truly understand why she did and said what she did. Their love story didn’t feel rushed, rather it was something that played a backseat to the story and was only brought up when needed. I loved this approach. It was the slow burn of their relationship from Evie basically shunning him, to the slow and consistent way Jasper continued to show up. That’s the part I appreciated the most. It felt way more natural as a relationship than what would typically have been an insta love. Their situation was not perfect and they had to learn and fight for the love they had for each other. Side note: what the fuck was the ending. What is happening in this town. So much happened and I have no answers. I need the next book asap!
The way Daphne portrays the emotional reality of accidental pregnancy and single motherhood is so raw, honest, and deeply human. The fear, the strength, the vulnerability, and the quiet resilience are all written with so much care that it feels incredibly real. And then there’s the golden retriever man Jasper Lawrence.. truly everything a single mum needs. Supportive, steady, kind, emotionally available. The kind of man who even though he wants to, doesn’t try to fix everything, just shows up and stays. Absolute perfection. One of my unexpected favourite details was the town itself. I loved the names of all the stores! They added so much charm and personality and made the setting feel lived-in and special, like a place you’d actually want to move to. Sap & Secrets is tender, comforting, and quietly powerful. A beautiful story about love, family, and finding your footing when life doesn’t go to plan.
Evie is a 30s something New Yorker who has relocated to a small town in Vermont. Our story begins with Evie giving birth to a baby that she didn’t even know she was pregnant with. The man delivering it? Her one night stand from about oh 10 months ago, Jasper the fireman.
This was a cute and spicy story that takes place in a fun little town filled with quirky characters. There is a lot of siblings and friends and coworkers and random townspeople; it got a bit confusing. I also felt like Jasper got the worst treatment from Evie (at first) and her friends (for way too long) when all he did was consistently show up for her and their baby?
Overall this is a good book if you’re looking for small town vibes with lots of spice and a bit of mystery.
Thank you to Daphne Elliot and Melody Publishing for this eARC in exchange for my honest opinions!
I have been seeing S&S all over the bookish world and was very excited to get the ARC! Evie and Jasper were so adorable fumbling through this terrifying experience of new parenting. A surprise baby that had no signs of pregnancy. The struggles of learning to be a new mom when you thought you could never have a kid let alone a family that you couldn't bare bringing a kid into? Im so glad Jaspers family took the cake on being welcoming, but I did hate the backlash. The possible murder mystery also kindof threw me off of the whole book. Overall I think it was well written but I feel the end was slightly rushed. Wanting an ending to be done instead of letting the ending lead? I think there is a lot of potential for this series and this is my first Daphne Elliot read, so I will be saving some more! I look forward to move Maple Flavored Romances 🖤
Starts off with her giving birth unexpectedly, dropping a bombshell in his lap. The rest of the story is them trying to find their way back to each other romantically.
He has been a playboy by choice and she has trust issues the size of the whole continent of North America. They find their way though.
I loved how he didn’t push her too hard, just enough to rattle her cage a bit.
This book also had two sub plots which were interesting and the end of this book has them both solved for NOW. Like they have pins put in them.
It’s going to be interesting to see how they evolve with the series.
So I see the next book is going to be Josh and Celine. That’s not something I saw until the end.
The chemistry between Frankie and Chief Nolan is FIRE though! I hope they get a book!! 😍
I am very fortunate that I got an ARC copy of Daphne Elliot’s Sap and Secret. I loved the small-town feel of this book. The author hooks you into all the characters and the charming town in Vermont. I loved Evie’s fearless ambition and Jasper’s quiet unassuming personality. The secondary characters of Ruby, Paul, and Frankie are also well-developed. Jasper’s family is eclectic and multi-faceted as well. I can also see Josh getting a future book as the series continues, and I am hoping to read that as soon as it comes out! If you like great banter, strong characters, and multiple points of conflict; this story will keep you reading to the end. It left me wanting more, so I recommend it to anyone.
I received an arc of this book. Hard DNF. I’m usually a fan of the pregnancy trope. First no was the best friends names were “Ruby and Frankie” in this age of abusive woman with same name? Could barely get past that. This was a surprise pregnancy to both mom and dad. The dad was treated like he knew all 9 months and abandoned them. The man showed up everyday with a coffee and breakfast and ready to help and for some reason that would piss her off. Her friend “you deserve better” girl WHAT. The narrative “he’s a player” was mentioned but nothing in the story to support that. At least not up until the 45% mark I made it to. I usually love Daphne Elliott books but this was just NO and I felt angry the whole time reading it.
Such a cute story! Accidental pregnancy, One night stand to parents, but they both did an amazing job. She was hesitant, he was all in after finding out. She was focus, in control and ready to give that little baby the world. He had other responsibilities but decided that baby was more important than all of it. Small Town, a mystery needing to be solved, two people who found their way to an ending they both deserve and friends who where there through it all♡ love it !
I enjoyed this charming little town in Vermont. Evie and Jasper have good chemistry. I love how dedicated he is. and the baby is just so sweet. my favorite character so far (other than Jasper) is Frankie and I hope we get to see more of her spicy self soon.
I received an advance copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.
you meet Jasper and Evie. one who doesn't usually do commitment and one just trying to start over anew. one passionate night and then 9 months later comes a surprise baby & a surprised new mom and dad. they navigate this new normal and maybe learn to coexist in more ways than one.
I had been seeing teasers of this book circulating on Daphne’s Instagram account for a while before I saw the ARC sign up post - safe to say I RAN like a bull at a gate for that 😂 The squeal that escaped me when it dropped into my inbox was real, I dropped everything and dove straight in.
Thank you Daphne and Shauna from The Author Agency for sending me an advanced reader copy of Sap & Secrets! 🩷
Okay, hold tight.. I have a few thoughts on this book and I’ll try to articulate them well enough that I don’t end up writing a novel (apologies in advance because that likely won’t happen 🤪).
Firstly, the basis of this book peeked my interest immediately. A surprise and unknown pregnancy, a small town firefighter/paramedic responding to a call to a woman in labour only to discover the baby that is about to be born is his… WHAT 🤯 There was also elements of murder and mystery in the small town of Maplewood which made for an interesting subplot and nice break in between the main focus.
Evie and Jasper..
Boy oh boy did they steal my heart, wrap it up and throw away the key 🥹 They were thrust into parenthood without any pre-planning or knowledge after a steamy couple of hookups. For 9 months they went about their lives unaware of the changes that awaited them. Yet they so gracefully and naturally adapted to their new roles like it was second nature. Vincent was a happy surprise, albeit shocking, he truly was the light of their lives.
Jasper, our golden retriever MMC came from an amazing family, happy childhood memories and was surrounded with nothing but love. Evie, our black cat FMC, didn’t experience the same. From a young age, she grew to believe she was worthless, would amount to nothing and could never do anything right. Her self confidence was shattered, her physical appearance being ridiculed constantly by the one person who was suppose to love her no matter what, her father.
Being thrown into each other’s orbit while navigating life with a newborn proved to be difficult. There was ups and downs, questions and doubts, fear and a whole lot of love. Ultimately, Jasper was determined to prove to Evie that he wasn’t going to abandon her and Vincent, he stuck by them, day in and day out, never once leaving their side.
It was a truly a beautiful story that resonated with me SO much. As a mother myself, I felt Evie’s concerns and love for her child. I understood her worries and the primal need to protect her baby from anyone and everything. Navigating life as a new mum with no family support and the uncertainty of the babies father and their intentions (unbeknownst to her) struck a cord.
Jasper is the literal definition of “if he wanted to, he would” and Evie, well she is our broken girl who builds walls so high she can’t see over the top, even when her forever is right on the other side..
I wholeheartedly loved this book. It is one that will stick with me and I am SO excited to read book 2, Maple and Moonlight (Josh’s story) 😍
This one had my attention the moment it was announced. A curvy FMC with PCOS, a firefighter/EMT baby daddy, and a surprise pregnancy set against a cozy Vermont backdrop… that’s basically a direct line to my reader heart. As a plus-size woman with PCOS myself, I’m always drawn to stories where I can actually see pieces of my own experience reflected on the page.
Overall, this was a quick, fun, and engaging read. It almost hit five stars for me, but I landed at 4 Stars because Evie’s trauma lingered so heavily throughout the book that it occasionally pulled me out of the story. It’s 2026, therapy exists!. And at 35, written as strong, independent, and capable, her inability to communicate or process things felt a little mismatched.
That said… as a mom of two, I fully understand the hormonal chaos of motherhood. The emotional whiplash is real, and it was captured beautifully.

Jasper? A mega cinnamon roll of a man. I adored him. The way the birth of his child — and the woman he adored — made him do a complete 180 from his reputation and step wholeheartedly into fatherhood had me grinning and kicking my feet. I just wish Evie had recognized how good she had it a bit earlier, because that arc felt like it had more emotional depth to explore.
The Vermont setting was charming, atmospheric, and exactly the kind of small-town romance backdrop I crave. I enjoyed most of the supporting cast, though I have to admit, Frankie rubbed me the wrong way. It almost felt like she was rooting against Evie and Jasper, which made me a little sad for Evie. At 35, you hope your circle is solid.
At the end of the day, this was a sweet, heartfelt read with a hero I absolutely could not get enough of. And I’m already counting down the days until Josh (Jasper’s brother) gets his book. Daphne teased just enough in the epilogue to make me desperate to see what unfolds between Josh and “sport mode Tinkerbell”…
As someone who has lived with PCOS, infertility, and multiple miscarriages, I want to add a gentle trigger warning. This story revolves entirely around a surprise pregnancy and motherhood. If that’s a sensitive topic for you, please take care of your heart. There’s also narcissistic abuse, anxiety, CPTSD, an off-page suspicious death, and a fire scene involving the FMC.
Take care of yourself and love yourself gently, always. 💛
Daphne Elliot’s Sap & Secrets is a captivating beginning to the Maplewood series that immediately hooked me with its high-stakes premise: a surprise pregnancy where the father, firefighter-paramedic Jasper Lawrence, responds to a medical call only to realize the woman in labor is his former flame and the baby is his.
This shocking opening sets the stage for a deeply emotional journey as Jasper and Evie are thrust into parenthood without a moment of preparation. Having spent nine months unaware of the life growing inside her, Evie’s sudden transition into motherhood is handled with such grace and authenticity that it resonated with me on a primal level.
As a fellow mother, I felt her protective instincts and her fears deeply, especially as she navigated the uncertainty of a new baby without a family support system. The "black cat and golden retriever" dynamic between our leads is where the heart of the story truly beats. Jasper is the literal definition of the “if he wanted to, he would” trope—a devoted, shirtless, coffee-bearing "menace" who is determined to prove he isn't going anywhere.
Coming from a loving background, his steadfastness serves as the perfect foil to Evie’s deeply ingrained insecurities. Having been conditioned by a lifetime of ridicule from her father to believe she was unworthy of love, Evie builds walls so high she can’t see the happiness right in front of her. While her skittishness could be frustrating at times, it felt entirely earned; she was simply protecting herself and her son, Vincent, the only way she knew how.
Beyond the domestic bliss and the "maple syrup madness" of Vermont, the book weaves in a compelling subplot of murder and arson that adds a layer of grit to the small-town charm. This mystery provides a refreshing break from the main romance and kept me turning pages, eager to see how the secrets of Maplewood would unravel.
It was incredibly heartening to see Evie slowly dismantle her defenses and recognize that Jasper was her "forever," leading to a satisfying resolution that avoided unnecessary drama in favor of genuine growth. Returning to a Vermont setting felt like coming home, and Daphne Elliot’s ability to submerge readers in such a vivid, entertaining world is exactly why I continue to reach for her books.
Watching Jasper and Evie adapt to their new roles while navigating their own scars was a beautiful experience. It is a heartfelt, steamy, and protective story that proves sometimes the biggest threat to your independence is the man who refuses to stop rescuing you.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I don’t even know where to start with this book. Do I ever, honestly? Probably not, but here we are anyways😇😅👀
This book did a number on me… And I’m trying really hard to explain why without spoiling anything, so bear with me😮💨
Technically, this book has a resolution. It can be read as a standalone. But here’s the thing—it gave me a resolution, not closure. And those two are absolutely not the same. This book made that very clear🫠
Let’s talk characters, because wow🤩🔥🥹 Evie. I love her, but I also want to shake her. Her walls aren’t just up, they’re somewhere in the stratosphere. Like… NASA called. And honestly? I get it. But still. EVIE C’MON GIRL 😮💨 And Jasper🫠🔥 The greenest green flag you’ve ever seen walking around with legs. Yes, he has a little bit of chaos in him, but not in a bad way. More in a “Jas, you could have died, what about the baby???” kind of way. I understand why he did what he did—honestly if I had the knowledge, I’d do the same without blinking, but STILLL🤯😳
What got me was the way he sees her walls and goes, “Yeah, no, I’m climbing those.” 🧐😎and he does🤯 and once he’s over them, he doesn’t tear them down, he helps her take them apart piece by piece😮💨🥹And by the time he starts climbing back down, they’re already crumbling because she’s finally safe🥹🫠That part?🫠🫠🫠
Also, I was not expecting this cozy small-town romance to come with a darker, dangerous edge🤔😳🤯🤩When the book mentioned secrets, I did not expect that kind of secret. And honestly? It added such a good layer to the story.
And the side characters?? Give me book 2, 3, 4, 5… maybe even a 6. I am not okay🫠😮💨🤯There are so many stories here that I need answers to. If you know, you know. If you get me, you get me. And if you don’t… just know patience was not a gift bestowed upon me at birth💁🏼♀️😇😅
Now here’s why I’m annoyed…And it’s NOT because the book wasn’t good😵💫It was fantastic🤩🤩 Five stars, no questions asked. But because the ending gave me answers without giving me peace🫠🤯😵💫🥹😤🤬And I refuse to believe that what we’re told is the full truth. I won’t. I simply won’t accept it.😠🫣
Am I spoiling something? No. I didn’t say who or what. So we’re good.😇💁🏼♀️ But if you’ve read this book and you’re reading this right now, please message me. I need to talk about that ending with someone. Instagram, TikTok, carrier pigeon, I don’t care 🤷🏼♀️ just let’s talk about it 👀☕️🫖🧁🍰
So yes 👍🏼 there is a resolution. But I still feel like I was left hanging 🫠🥺😫 I hate cliffhangers… even the emotional kind...
