Loved this Victorian cozy Christmas rom-mystery with characters you'll adore and a story that you just can't put down. It's Book 3 in the author's terrific trilogy, The Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke and Fire. Will make you race back to read books 1 and 2 if you haven't already!
A snow-bound estate, hidden treasure, a budding romance, & a charming Christmas house party turned deadly. Syrie James delivers an intriguing, romantic whodunnit in the vein of Agatha Christie. A gorgeously atmospheric Victorian mystery, Danger at Darkmoor Park kept me quickly turning the pages long into the night.
School headmistress Selena Taylor forfeits spending Christmas with her siblings this year to help her benefactress host a Christmas house party at the estate she’ll inherit one day. When a blizzard traps them all at Darkmoor Park, the house party takes a sinister turn when one of the guests is found dying at the base of the stairs. Was it an accident or was he pushed? In his last breath, he whispers a cryptic clue to Selena hinting at the location of over 5,000 pounds. Dr. Adrian Scott happens to be in the vicinity, but arrives too late to help the victim. Now trapped along with all the other guests, he & Selena must work together to find the hidden money, uncover secrets, & stay alive before the murderer strikes again.
I loved this deliciously gothic romance! Selena is the kind of heroine you want to cheer for. She’s intelligent, compassionate, & delightfully charming. Dr. Scott is full of secrets & is the type of brooding, enigmatic hero you can’t wait to learn more about. I loved seeing their romance bloom from fiery kisses in the linen closet to heartfelt declarations. I enjoyed how they worked together as a team to unravel the mystery.
The exciting mystery kept me on my toes. There are a slew of suspects including Dr. Scott, each hiding secrets. I enjoyed deciphering the clues right along with Selena. I loved the gothic atmosphere with frosted windows, shadowy hallways, that closed-in feeling of being trapped, not knowing whom to trust, threatening notes, & candle-lit rooms. It’s a lovely nod to classic gothic mysteries while being completely unique.
Highly recommend this charming, romantic, closed door gothic mystery/romance! This is the third amazing book in the Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke & Fire series & easily read as a standalone. Adore this series & can’t wait for more! I received an advanced copy from the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are completely my own & provided voluntarily.
A country house party for a festive Victorian Christmas is marred by murder. Syrie James cooked up a delectable Christmas feast for her readers with Danger at Darkmoor Park, the third book in the series of standalones.
Selena Taylor remains in Yorkshire while all her siblings are gathering in Cornwall for the holidays. She is happy to help her benefactress, Mrs. Hillman host her friends at Darkmoor Park for the holidays. A snowstorm moves in and locks in their house party for several days. Selena is prepared with holiday activities and a full larder, but solving a murder and finding a hidden fortune were not on her agenda.
A scream, a dying man’s cryptic words, and the lately arrived Dr. Aiden Scott are the beginning of a mystery. Selena rolls up her sleeves and is determined to investigate. All the guests are keeping secrets including the new arrival, she realizes. Even while she and Aiden join efforts in detecting and a charming attraction, neither quite trust the other. Selena wanted to solve a murder like her talented sisters and now she’s getting her chance.
Danger at Darkmoor Park was a brilliant and sparkling Christmas Historical Cozy Mystery. Selena is just the kind of amateur detecting heroine I love. She’s smart, but daring. Her personality is charming and she keeps it together even though she doesn’t have it all her own way investigating or in her own slow-burn romance. And, all throughout the historical Victorian Christmas and old abbey background made a sensational surrounding the mystery and romance plot. Definitely a book treat you’ll want to stuff in your stocking this year!

Closed-circle mystery meets Christmas Gothic in the satisfying “Danger at Darkmoor Park”
In the latest installment of The Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke & Fire, Syrie James tears a page out of Agatha Christie’s playbook: Isolate your suspects to increase the intimacy—and the tension. Many Golden Age mysteries stranded suspects on an island, a boat, or a train. In “Danger at Darkmoor Park,” James leverages the isolated country house coupled with a nasty blizzard to very enjoyable effect.
The youngest Taylor sister, Selena, is living at Darkmoor with her friend and patron, Mrs. Hillman. To celebrate Christmas, Mrs. Hillman invites a handful of friends, both old and new, for a festive Victorian house party, but in short order, one guest falls mysteriously dead. With snow piling up, the ladies can obtain neither medical nor police support to assess the cause of death—until a strikingly handsome doctor turns up at their door.
Is Dr. Scott’s arrival a happy accident—or something more sinister? Did the party guest succumb to an accident—or did someone help them along? And what happened to all that cash the victim was reportedly carrying? A trapped Selena tries to resolve these puzzles: searching rooms, surreptitiously questioning staff and guests, and darting around in the catacombs. All while trying to figure out how she feels about the very helpful—and very secretive—Dr. Scott.
I love closed-circle mysteries, and setting this story during the winter holidays just added to the fun. (The meals! The gowns! The games! The tree-trimming!) Our heroine, Selena, is bold and fearless, but also sensible and thoughtful. The fragile partnership forged between her and the doctor—both of them trying to investigate the death and find the missing money while at the same time falling for each other—feels risky and delicious.
I’ve read all three of the “Sisterhood” books, but this one was definitely my favorite!
A Victorian Christmas house party turns deadly when guests start to mysteriously die in this snowbound whodunit. Headmistress Selena and Dr. Adrian Scott are racing against time to solve the case, unmask the culprit, and restore peace to the holiday season.
The combination of these tropes fascinated me. Not only do we have a compassionate and charming amateur sleuth, but we have a house full of interesting characters, including the slightly brooding and secretive doctor. A blossoming, and at times very chemistry-laden, romance heats up with forced proximity, danger, and secrets, adding multiple layers of intrigue to this story. I had no idea who to trust!
From start to finish, I was fully engaged and devoured this one. The ominous gothic feel, along with the sprinkling of clues, gave this one all the delicious tingles and thrills of solving a mystery.
This is Book 3 in the series and I haven’t read the others and never felt lost. I daresay, each book can stand alone.
Content: murder (not graphic); moments of peril; mild romance

Another wonderful read by Syrie James. I've enjoyed all 3 of the books about The Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke and Fire but this one was my favorite. It was so interesting that each book focused on a different sister. I just couldn't put this book down. Curious with each page turn where the story would go next. I love reading all of Syrie James's book and can't wait to see what is next!
Loved the story I was invested in the whole snowed in murder mystery with gothic vibes. There was a twist but you find out the killer at the end and there is a love story as well. Great read!
Do you make book predictions? How often do they come true?
Selena Taylor is happy to help host a Christmas house party at Darkmoor Park. When a guest mysteriously dies during a snowstorm, everyone is trapped inside. Dr. Adrian Scott arrives during the blizzard and helps investigate what appears to be a murder. Will they be able to solve the crime, and will they be able to resolve the feelings between them?
My thoughts on this novel: • Gothic Christmas historical romance is a subgenre that I absolutely love.
• This is the third book in the Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke and Fire Series. I loved all three books in this series.
• I enjoyed that this novel took place during the Christmas season. A Christmas house party is a perfect setting for a mystery.
• This was a cozy mystery that kept me guessing until the end.
• I liked the tension and romance between Selena and Dr. Scott, although I kept wondering if Dr. Scott could be the killer at times. They had great chemistry between them.
• I enjoyed the references to Jane Austen.
• Serena is a great heroine. She is a strong intelligent woman that runs a school with her sister. She is also the heiress to Mrs. Hillman. I loved the relationship between Serena and Mrs. Hillman.
• I would love this series to continue with all the sisters and their husbands.
Overall, Danger at Darkmoor Park was an engaging Gothic Christmas historical romance and mystery. I loved this story as a standalone and loved the series of three books overall. I highly recommend the entire series.

When holiday guests find themselves trapped inside the icy confines of Darkmoor Park during a fierce blizzard, suspicion is everywhere, when a mysterious death shocks the estate. Everyone has something to hide.
Headmistress and heiress Selena Taylor must team up with the handsome yet secretive Dr. Adrian Scott to uncover the killer—and stumble upon a hidden treasure. The stakes get even higher , as threatening letters arrive.
Paying homage to Agatha Christie, this third installment in the Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke & Fire series will keep you on the edge of your seat, guessing whodunnit until the final reveal! A perfect blend of slow burn romance and a classic closed circle mystery, Syrie masterfully captures all the magic of a Victorian holiday with vivid details. This book may be third in the series but reads well as a standalone. It’s thrilling from start to finish!
If you haven't already read this series by @syriejames you are missing out. For lovers of historical fiction and mysteries with a touch of romance, you will be thrilled with all three of these books.
Danger at Darkmoor Park is the third book of The Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke & Fire and it is amazing as well.
This book centers around Selena and a series of events during a Christmas party. Two murders and a few attempted murders along with a large sum of hidden money makes for a great storyline. My suspicions were proven correct in the end. I'm so excited that I finally guessed one right!
As always, the writing is fantastic and the imagery is vivid. Syrie ensures you stay captivated from start to finish.
This book series has been a delight to read! I love the setup of the mystery in this one- multiple murders at a Christmas house party where the guests are snowed in for days. The author kept me guessing until the very end. The conclusion of the novel wraps up in a satisfying manner. Highly recommend!
My reading goal for this year is to read more authors who are new to me. I have read so many wonderful stories because of this goal, and Danger at Darkmoor Park was one of those. From the beginning, I was drawn into the story and could barely put the book down for even a moment. The author did such a wonderful job keeping you glued to the pages, making you have to know the answers to your many questions. There were twists and turns, suspicions, romance, and a Christmas feeling that weaved through the mystery to create a book that I can’t recommend enough.
I loved how the author kept you guessing. When you thought you had it solved, a theory popped up to make you question everything. One of the other things I loved was how the author incorporated Christmas into the book. She made the mystery and Christmas combine in a way that wasn’t too heavy but was still mysterious and Christmasy at the same time.
The romance, in my opinion, wasn’t the center of the story. I’m not usually a fan of fast-paced romances like this one, but I felt that it was necessary and fit perfectly. There were secrets between them that could possibly stand in their way of being together.
I truly loved this book. I am so happy that I had the opportunity to read a book by this wonderful author! I can’t recommend this one enough.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Wow, what a thrilling and riveting Victorian murder mystery romance! The whole time I was reading Danger at Darkmoor Park by Syrie James, I kept thinking of Agatha Christie and how much this story’s elements reminded me of hers. There are numerous clever twists and turns, a secluded setting where all suspects are confined by a storm together in one place and a mile of red herrings to keep you guessing for hours! Just when you think you may have worked out who the killer is, then you are taken in another direction. As a result, it is a really fun novel and will keep you on your detective toes!
There are plenty of surprises and unexpected developments in Danger at Darkmoor Park so Syrie had me hook, line and sinker from start to finish! I could not stop turning the pages until I figured everything out. Well, until the killer was revealed! I loved the ending. The journey was engrossing and every step was worth all the effort of being led down a number of garden paths. It’s a festive, treasure hunt, find-the killer, mystery-maze!
After a guest falls down the stairs and help is sent, a visiting doctor in the area arrives on the scene but too late. Before the victim dies, though, he tells Selena Taylor (co-host and head mistress of the school) a most vital yet cryptic secret with his last breath. This sets her on a journey of investigation but not alone. With the weather so unruly, the doctor is invited by the host to stay. As they join with interest to solve the crime and crack the secret of the missing pieces of the puzzle, an undercurrent attraction between our main two characters develops. I love how Selena Taylor and Doctor Adrian Scott work intuitively together. They make quite a team! (And yes it is another Agatha Christie influence.) The romantic temptation and development between our two daring sleuths adds a heart-warming touch. How they work around the expected social behaviour norms of the culture was admirable. Although they step momentarily outside the era’s wall of rules, they act realistically. Stealing kisses, touching each other and being alone in locations, were actions considered taboo at that time, and could ruin their reputations. But they could not resist. And because of that, their daringness adds a freshness and charm to the story.
Syrie deserves a huge amount of praise for the fantastic delivery and content of this novel. My curiosity was well bated by all the strange and suspicious happenings. I felt a wide range of emotions and there were times my chest literally hurt from the tension! This snowbound murder mystery at Darkmoor Park is bursting with atmosphere! I felt completely pulled into the setting, while following our sleuth pair. And I could visualise everything thanks to all the authentic exceptional descriptions. I was completely transported to another time period in a unique location. And as I became immersed deeper and deeper in the plot, I felt I was there!
It is quite an eclectic group of people who end up together at the country manor. Anything becomes possible when the winter blizzard makes transportation limited and guests are detained in a single dwelling. (More Agatha Christie mystery-like charm.) When a guest dies, the first thought is that it must have been an accident. But after taking a closer look, and more details are gathered, it appears something sinister has happened. Quickly the suspicions escalate and a murder is plausible. With that realisation, comes fears, doubts and accusations. Who has done this evil deed? So when another guest dies, it seems more than coincidence. With everyone confined by the storm, and remaining in one place, it makes the investigation a little easier. But it also makes it more frightening as a killer lurks on the premises. Will they strike again and who will be the next victim? As the list of suspects continues to unfold, Selena’s imagination ramps up as she and Doctor Scott analyse each person’s background. At times, there are some pretty convincing motives! While the possible stories behind each guest and newer manor employees are formulated. As one character has noted: everyone has secrets, right? But which ones can bring about death?
I must say the characters are wonderfully vivid and well framed in each scene. Although we only get to know the suspects to a point, suspicions follow each of them through a major part of the plot. Of course, they are supposed to come across this way during the investigation as that is part of the mystery format. But like our hero and heroine, we continually question whether the guests are who they say they are and do they have a motive to kill or steal?
The author provides some fascinating inspiration behind the novel (read the Author Notes last). I can see why she was haunted by a piece of family history and was able to use it to her advantage in Danger at Darkmoor Park. But Syrie James puts a fresh and clever spin on it in an Agatha Christie way, making it an exciting and riveting read. Although the story is set during Christmas, it could be read and enjoyed with gusto at any time of the year! Get a copy now and you’ll be raving about it as I am! 5 Stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is the third book in the “Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke and Fire” series by Syrie James. It is a Victorian murder mystery set during the Christmas season at a manor house which serves as a school for girls. I had read (and loved!) the first two books in the series before reading this one, so I had been introduced to Selena and the school she and her sister Athena started. It is not necessary to have read the other books before reading this one as the author gives a summary of the sisters’ history in the first chapter.
Selena and the Manor’s prior owner and benefactress Mrs. Hillman have planned a festive house party for the holidays. Mrs. Hillman has planned a reunion of friends she made on a month-long holiday at the seaside four years earlier. On the first morning after their arrival, there is an accident, and the apothecary is sent for. However, the servant who was sent found that the apothecary was out of town for the holidays. On his way back, the servant met up with a mysterious stranger, who also happens to be a handsome young doctor. Unfortunately, he is too late, and we have our first death. There has also been a heavy snowstorm overnight which traps the guests at the Manor. The details of the activities they attempt in trying to celebrate Christmas (despite the death(s)) are fun to read about, but it was the mystery and possibility of romance that kept me reading. As there was a plausible handsome young man in a previous book who turned out to be a scoundrel, I was suspicious of the handsome young doctor introduced here. Each of the guests, including the doctor, seems to have something to hide, so the unraveling of secrets kept me going, wondering how the pieces would fit together in the end.
I read this one quickly since I was on a trip and had a day of airplanes and airports in which to read. It was a delightful way to spend a day traveling! I am looking forward to rereading this book during the holidays. I hope there are more in the series, possibly including their brother, or one that includes all three sisters (and their husbands?).
Snowbound in a grand Yorkshire manor, surrounded by mystery, danger, and a growing romance—Syrie James’ latest novel, “Danger at Darkmoor Park,” is everything I love in a cozy mystery and more. With a historical setting, a winter holiday backdrop, and a heroine who’s equal parts daring and grounded, this book checks all the boxes for a delightful, suspenseful read.
Selena Taylor is a refreshingly capable protagonist—bold and fearless, yet always sensible and emotionally intelligent. I loved watching her take charge in such high-stakes circumstances, especially as the blizzard traps her and the other guests at Darkmoor Park. When a fellow guest dies after giving her a cryptic clue, the stakes rise dramatically, pulling the reader into a thrilling hunt for hidden treasure—and a dangerous game of cat and mouse.
“The doctor’s brows shot up. ‘What did he say?’ Selena paused, as Mr. Clarkes’ anxious but enigmatic last words came back to her. ‘I hid it…under the dragon. Four rows! In the…’ There he had broken off. He seemed to have been trying to tell her something of great import.” —Chapter 3 Enter Dr. Adrian Scott, who emerges from the snowstorm just in time to help or possibly hinder. The partnership between him and Selena is the perfect blend of tension, trust, and slow-burning chemistry. Their growing attraction feels risky and delicious, made even more compelling by the fact that neither can be completely sure of the other's motives.
“She couldn’t forget the heartfelt look in Dr. Scott’s eyes before he had said good night. The sensation of his fingertips as they touched her cheek with his parting indirect ‘kiss’ had kept her awake for hours and still lingered.” —Chapter 8
With its richly atmospheric setting, clever plot twists, and irresistible romantic thread, this is a story that kept me turning the pages well past bedtime. Syrie James has once again crafted a tale full of heart, intrigue, and holiday magic. I can’t wait for everyone to read it so we can discuss.
This book featured some of my favorite elements: Christmas-time historical romance and a cozy mystery. When those two things are done well, it makes for an absolute treat of a read—and Danger at Darkmoor Park hits that perfect balance between charm and suspense.
Mrs. Hillman has gathered her circle of friends for a festive Christmas celebration at her grand estate, Darkmoor Park. Helping her host is Selena Taylor, her friend and heir, who runs a school for girls inside Darkmoor Park. With the students away for the holidays, Selena is ready for a rare break from her busy life, but a raging snowstorm soon traps everyone on the estate. When one of the guests, Mr. Clarke, is found dead at the bottom of the stairs—after whispering a cryptic clue about hidden treasure—Selena begins to suspect something much darker than an accident.
Enter Dr. Adrian Scott, the mysterious physician who arrives out of the blizzard and quickly becomes her partner in the investigation. Together they must unravel a trail of secrets, lies, and buried motives—all while the tension (and their attraction) rises. As another death shakes the house and threatening notes appear, Selena begins to question everything… including whether the man she’s falling for might be hiding something deadly.
I loved the interplay between humor, holiday warmth, and whodunit suspense. The snowbound setting, paired with the atmospheric charm of a creaking manor and flickering firelight, gave this book such a cozy yet eerie vibe. Selena is a strong and engaging heroine—clever, independent, and deeply loyal—while Adrian adds a perfect mix of intrigue and heart. The mystery kept me guessing, the romance was delightfully restrained yet charged with chemistry, and the treasure-hunt twist added a dash of adventure that made this story sparkle.
This is the kind of winter read that makes you want to light a candle, pour some tea, and lose yourself in a world of hidden rooms, whispered secrets, and slow-burn affection.
The third book in Ms. James’ “The Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke and Fire” series focuses on the youngest of the three sleuthing Taylor sisters – Selena. It’s Christmastime, and Selena’s students have been sent home for the holidays from the Yorkshire boarding school she co-manages with her sister Athena (the star of Book Two in the series). But the owner of the mansion which houses the school has invited some old friends to Darkmoor Park to celebrate the holidays with her. Less than a day after the guests arrive, one falls down the mansion’s grand staircase, and a servant is sent to town to fetch help. The boy returns with an enigmatic doctor in tow (the local apothecary has also left town for the holidays), just in time for the injured man to be pronounced dead.
Selena and the handsome doctor immediately start investigating the guest’s mysterious demise (and the deceased man’s cryptic last words). The bourgeoning winter storm that has been squalling around the isolated manor home turns into a full-blown blizzard, and before you can say “Mousetrap,” the residents of the snow-bound mansion find themselves locked in an Agatha Christie-like, closed-circle mystery. Selena also starts to fall in love with the doctor. But is he a man to be trusted?
This is a cleverly plotted mystery, filled with richly detailed descriptions of Victorian clothing, 19th century holiday celebrations, and old-school British architecture. James takes her readers through lots of fun (and sometimes scary!) twists and turns, which should keep them reading late into the night. If you’re in the mood for a fun, Christie-style, murder mystery to read over the holidays (whether you’re snow-bound or not), this is the book for you!

Welcome to Christmas at Darkmoor Park! A festive Christmas house party of friends turns dark when a guest is found dead on the stairs and a mysterious, handsome doctor arrives. When a snowstorm isolates them it is up to Selena to figure out what actually happened and what the dead man’s last words meant. When Dr. Scott has the same idea: they decide to work together. As they work together they form a connection and his kisses leave Selena breathless but he’s keeping something. Can they figure out what really happened and more importantly can she trust Dr. Scott?
I adore this series and this third book did not disappoint! This is the third book in The Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke and Fire and I think it is my favorite. The book can be read and enjoyed as a standalone but I highly recommend reading the series. Selena is a strong, resourceful woman making her own way in the world. She is the youngest sister and wants to solve a mystery like her sisters have and I felt that the family connection added to her motivation and some of her questionable choices. The sparks between Selena and Dr. Scott added an air of romance to the story and I wondered along with her if he was trustworthy. The writing immersed me in the story and it felt like I was part of the house party. An estate like Darkmoor Park is an ideal setting for a mystery. It has so many places to hide including the chapel, crypts, and Folly plus it is beautiful and atmospheric. The isolation that the snowstorm brought to Darkmoor Park limited the suspect pool and made me consider everyone as a suspect until the end.
I highly recommend this book to readers that enjoy gothic mysteries or mysteries set at Christmas.
Thanks to the author and AustenProse for a gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I will start by saying I read the first book in the series but not the second so I was not familiar with what had happened to Selena in that book. However, that did not really cause any problems in following what she was experiencing in this story. I liked the mystery and there are certainly some good red herrings throughout to keep the identity of the killer a mystery until the big reveal. Once the killer was made known it served as a good reminder that sometimes the solution really is the simplest explanation - it does not always have to be a big conspiracy. Selena should definitely take some lessons in subtlety before her next investigation - she tends to just come right out with things and test theories before really working through them. The weakest part of the story for me was the romance aspect. I thought she came to trust him way to easily and their relationship moved from strangers to being in love way too quickly. I would have been fine with it ending with them still courting/making an effort to get to know one another rather than with a proposal. I disagreed with Selena being made to feel bad for not trusting him after finding out he had been lying - he had so many opportunities to tell her the truth (especially as his guilt over the lie almost got her killed) but did not. I forget where this came from, but it fit the situation here so well - "It isn't the truth that ruins a relationship, it's the secrets."

Selena Taylor is the youngest sister in “The Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke & Fire” series from Syrie James. She is the star of this latest installment (which can be read as a standalone), “Danger at Darkmoor Park.” It’s Christmas and Selena has decided to stay at Darkmoor Park, the location of her boarding school, to co-host a Christmas party. The guests arrive and bring a major snowstorm with them. Soon the bodies begin to fall.
A large sum of missing money, “accidental” deaths, strange clues, red herrings, and a mysterious stranger combine to give Selena the mystery she has longed for (after all, her sisters had each successfully solved mysteries). She also finds herself attracted to Dr. Adrian Scott, a doctor who happened to be passing through the village when the snowstorm got bad enough that the trains had to stop. He seems like a nice man, but how is it that a doctor arrived in the village just as the residents of Darkmoor Park needed one? Is it coincidence or something more?
This is a fun read with all the right tropes for cozying up with a warm blanket, a cup of cocoa, and a fire in the fireplace. Selena knows her own mind, but sometimes suffers from self-doubt, especially in relation to her mystery-solving sisters. The cast of characters makes for a perfect snowed-in mystery.
This book is great for readers who like locked room mysteries, historical mysteries, and historical mysteries with a little romance.

If you’re looking for a cozy-but-chilling Christmas read, this Victorian mystery delivers exactly that. The story has all the classic ingredients: a remote manor, a raging blizzard, a house full of uneasy guests, and secrets lurking in every shadow of Darkmoor Park. I loved how quickly the atmosphere pulled me in—snow piling up outside, tension rising inside, and that wonderful mix of danger and romance simmering beneath it all. Selena is an easy heroine to root for. She’s smart, determined, and trying her best to stay calm as her Christmas house party turns into a locked-room murder investigation. The arrival of Dr. Adrian Scott adds even more intrigue. Their chemistry is strong from the start, but the author keeps you guessing about his true intentions, which adds a fun layer of suspense. The plot blends mystery, treasure hunting, and slow-burn romance in a very satisfying way. Every guest feels like a possible suspect, and the clues (including one very cryptic dying message) kept me turning the pages. The threatening notes and second murder definitely raise the tension, and the Gothic touches give the whole story a moody, atmospheric vibe. It’s a great pick if you enjoy historical suspense with a romantic heartbeat, strong heroines, secretive heroes, and a good old-fashioned manor-house mystery wrapped in snow. I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Headmistress Selene Taylor feels that her chance at love has passed her by, but she is happy to oversee the school she and her sister founded. Wanting to be with her family for the hoildays, she made the difficult decision to stay at Darkmoor Park to act as hostess for Mrs. Hillman who has invited a group of acquaintances to spend ten days with her. No mystery would be complete without something to investigate, and I was glad to be part of Selene and Adrian Scott’s discovery of clues to the murders, and a large amount of money that one of the victims had hidden somewhere on the grounds. You are sure to get caught up in this story with secret passages, catacombs, money to be found, a handsome doctor, and a murderer to catch.
Things to love: danger treasure hunt hidden identity Gothic atmosphere red herrings estate folly romance
I love this third book in the Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke and Fire. It can be read as a standalone because the author does a great job of telling you a bit about each of the sisters so you feel informed. But, I loved each book and highly recommend you read this one as well as the other two mysteries.
I received an advanced copy of the book from the publisher, NetGalley, and Austen Prose. All opinions are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review.

“Books allow us to enter the minds of people whom we would otherwise never have a chance to meet. They entertain us and challenge us, and they stir the heart. I, for one, cannot imagine a world without books—and one can never have too many.”
I have very much been enjoying The Audacious Sisterhood of Fire and Smoke series by Syrie James and her newest release, Danger at Darkmoor Park was just as entertaining as the first two books. Selena is helping cohost a house party during the Christmas season when one of the guests is discovered dead. Before succumbing to his injuries, he whispers to Selena about something hidden and now it’s up to her to discover what and where and what truly happened. With the secretive Dr. Scott at her side, the two put themselves and their hearts at risk as they seek for answers.
Read this for: *Victorian era *Gothic vibes *Mystery *Amateur sleuths *Single POV *Christmas house party *Kiss in a closet *Unexpected twists *Clean romance I received an advance reader copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I recommend this book.
Danger at Darkmoor Park is the perfect holiday season read for fans of historical mysteries with romantic undertones! Set against the well-drawn, atmospheric backdrop of a snow-covered Yorkshire estate, author Syrie James gives us a richly developed heroine to root for in Selena Taylor (a schoolteacher who is also heir to said estate). As holiday guests begin to die, readers are sucked into this suspenseful tale of intrigue, romance . . . and deception. Two questions plague Selena as she tries to identify the killer (while avoiding being killed herself)—who among the houseguests is a murderer, and is there a possibility that Dr. Scott, her willing assistant in the investigation, is NOT who he seems? What if she’s fallen in love with a killer?
Danger at Darkmoor Park will make a great gift for the mystery fans (traditional or historical) on your holiday gift list. Or treat yourself to this enthralling who-done-it. You won’t be sorry.
Great finale of this fun, cozy Victorian historical mystery series!
I enjoyed this entertaining finale to the Victorian cozy mystery series by Syrie James. The continuity of the family of sisters was very well done. I always appreciate when the books are consistent and build on the history and relationships among the characters who appear in each book.
The story unfolded quickly in this Christmas tale. It was easy to spot the planned romance between Selena Taylor and Dr. Adrian Scott. What wasn't so clear until close to the end was the murderer. The true culprit crossed my mind but I dismissed it, with so many other options. I also liked the heroine, Selena, and her budding romance with Dr. Scott. I found her kind, humble, energetic, smart, and courageous, which made me care that she and the Dr. were able to get to the bottom of the mystery in the book, and get engaged at the end of the story!
I like this the best of the 3 in the series! It helps to read the others, and in order, to enjoy them to the fullest.
Fans of Agatha Christie and historical romance will enjoy this Victorian closed-circle mystery. Every element, from the captivating characters, to the holiday setting, adventurous investigation, and compelling mystery, made this story an unputdownable read.
Suspects abound at the isolated grand country house during a winter holiday blizzard. Everyone has a motive, and the expertly plotted twists kept me guessing whodunnit until the surprising reveal. Insta love is a tricky trope, but James does it beautifully. The attraction between Selena and Dr. Scott blossoms into a believable and lovely romance as they search for the hidden treasure and a ruthless killer.
Though this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. I loved it so much I will definitely be reading book 1 and 2!
Thank you Dragonblade Publishing and Austenprose for the ARC!
What could be more delightful than a snowy Christmas party at the grand Darkmoor Park…with a touch of murder, of course? Syrie James’ third installment in the Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke and Fire series, following the charming Selena Taylor, is just as much fun as the first two. When Mrs. Hillman invites a group of friends for a reunion at her magnificent Yorkshire estate, things turn deadly when her suitor takes a fatal fall down the stairs. But was it truly an accident? With his last breath, he leaves a cryptic clue for Selena to follow…with the help of a handsome doctor, who she’s not entirely sure she can trust. Curl up with a hot toddy (just make it yourself!) and settle in for a delicious locked-room Victorian mystery full of romance and Gothic thrills. This is the perfect book to savor over the holidays — and it would make a great gift, too!
In the third book of this series we follow Selena's quest in solving a murder - and a mystery - during the Christmas season.
We are introduced at first to a cheerful party of guests eager to celebrate the festivities, but murder struck and Selena feels she has to solve it to follow in her sisters' footsteps.
The characters are nicely depicted, the story flows well and the culprit is well hidden until the very end.
This is a really enjoyable reading, I am not sure whether we will get some more books in the series, but I would be happy for the mysteries to continue.
I received an advance copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily, thanks to the author for it.
The third book in the series. Having read the second one, the background was familiar, but the book can be read as a standalone. The mysteries in this installment were twisted and not always consistent. The romance was of course predictable. Nevertheless, the language was partly inconsistent as well as the actions of the H&h. A lot of red herrings in this closed house crime story.
The story sets the seasonal spirit, with the snow storm, the described activities and decorations.
Thanks netgalley for the arc. Opinions are my own.
