The third volume surpassed all my expectations, encompassing everything I hoped for and more. The plot of this danmei is incredibly intriguing, drawing me in completely.
The plot is as follows: We are introduced to Sheng Lingyuan, a former Emperor of the human race who died long ago and was resurrected/awakened by individuals seeking to use him to break the seal on the Chiyuan, a mysterious fire that grants power to all races except humans. In this world, humans are born with unique abilities, and there exists an agency that employs these gifted individuals to combat others with similar powers who have turned malicious, as well as to protect ordinary humans.
Then there’s Xuan Ji, who initially appears to be just another person with special abilities. However, as the story unfolds, he becomes a director of a unit comprised of others with extraordinary powers but he turns out to be far more complex. His true form, his real identity, and even his ultimate true form are all incredibly captivating, each revelation a slow, delicious treat that keeps me eager to learn more.
When Sheng Lingyuan and Xuan Ji finally meet, the story truly begins and we find out about their deep, intertwined history. The twist is that neither of them remembers their past, which adds layers of mystery and emotional depth to their relationship. Isn’t this plot undeniably intriguing and captivating?
This entire volume was phenomenal, from the secrets unveiled to the character development, to the nuanced handling of romance. Once again, Priest demonstrates her exceptional ability to create stories that keep me devoted as a reader. She masterfully weaves focused plotlines where romance starts as a subtle subplot but evolves into a satisfying, integral part of the story.
Xuan Ji remains a delightful character, I adore this little chicken so much. His confusion, heartbreak, and loneliness as his memories begin to resurface are portrayed with such depth and sensitivity.
Sheng Lingyuan finally begins to open up in this volume, giving us a genuine sense of his thoughts and feelings and it’s as rewarding as I had hoped. We start to see more of his true self, moving beyond the cold, heartless persona he seemed to embody in volume 2.
Their relationship in this volume aligns perfectly with what I anticipated. While they are currently only allies, the resurgence of Xuan Ji's memories about his true nature hints at a tragic yet beautiful love story taking shape. Sheng Lingyuan is also gradually warming up to Xuan Ji, and I am eagerly awaiting the moment he fully recovers his memories and discovers Xuan Ji’s true identity. That revelation promises to be the highlight of the entire series.
What more can I say? Their relationship is so obsessively captivating that it pulls me in completely and refuses to let go.
In conclusion, I can’t wait for volume 4, please, let it come faster!
Woah, priest really loves writing unreliable memories, huh? I spent so much of this volume trying to figure out what was real, what was remembered wrong, and what was being hidden that I genuinely felt like my head was going to explode. Every time I thought I finally understood something, the story pulled the rug out from under me again. It got to the point where I wanted to stop thinking altogether because whatever I believed I knew kept getting re-written. I was lost a lot of the time, and with the English print release still possibly taking a year or two to be completed, I’m already worried I’ll forget half of this by the time the next volumes come out. Ugh!!
The main characters kept me going, though. Their connection feels so heavy in this volume, like there’s so much history, guilt, pain, and unfinished emotion sitting between them. Xuan Ji really stood out to me because he’s confused too, but he keeps pushing forward and trying to reach the truth. Sheng Lingyuan is still distant, tragic, and so hard to read, but I can feel that there’s a reason for all of it. Their dynamic is my favorite part because it feels like buried love and old hurt slowly rising to the surface, even when neither of them truly has an idea what to do with it. I also liked that the ARB and the side characters still felt important. They helped keep the modern investigation grounded, and I liked seeing how the ancient past keeps pressing into the present.
This volume was compelling, but also a lot. I can appreciate how messy and painful the story makes love, memory, identity, and duty feel, but I also can’t pretend I wasn’t frustrated. I wanted more clarity, or at least a little more breathing room between all the twists and half buried truths. Still, I’m attached enough to keep going because I need to know what Xuan Ji and Sheng Lingyuan really were to each other and what all of this history has cost them. Also, shoutout to Rosmei for always delivering gorgeous book covers. I don’t usually like seeing characters or people on covers, but I have to admit it really helps my imagination. I’m also glad the dustcover has no people on it, so it looks great displayed on the shelf.
I am enthralled with this series! Xuan Ji and Sheng Lingyuan have such a complex history together and I love how the story unfolds, even when it’s frustrating at times because you want to ship them faster. I cannot wait for the next volume. I wish I didn’t have to wait over a half year for the next one to be printed and shipped out. 😭
I have a mixed relationship with Priest's works. I absolutely loved SPL, but all her other works have just been "okay" for me. I love the lore of the worlds, but something about the characters and story fail to grab me. This 3rd book had some good moment, and I thought, "finally, I csn get invested". But then it fell off again for me. It's not bad, and I am deep enough in it now that I want to know what happens, but I feel like I am missing something. Priest is a popular danmei author, and so many people love her books, so I don't know what it is that isn't clicking for me.
This volume was more introspective but really stirred my heart! Loved the way Xuan Ji gets lost in those flashbacks, and me right along him Can't wait for the next volume, that cut was criminal ><
