Jon Clay has suffered a bitter disappointment and has sworn off all women, convinced that they are all schemers and he will not fall for it again. He has partnered with mountain man Silas and is successfully learning the ropes about trapping and trading and staying alive in the wild terrain far from his native Virginia plantation.
The book opens with a tricky game and negotiation with the Indian Tall Man. Jon very reluctantly has to accept the last wager and finds himself winning a very dirty and smell urchin. Silas warns him that they will not be able to trade with anyone if they refuse as it is a matter of honour.
Smelly Woman alias Cat is no happier with the arrangement. She keeps herself matted and filthy to repel unwanted attention since the death of her father. She did not belong to Tall Man, but Silas insists that they take her along for her own safety.

Unable to stand the smell, Jon demands that she bathe and is astonished when a beautiful young woman emerges. They are drawn to each other reluctantly and slowly their stories emerge as they learn to trust again.
Cat was the only survivor of an Indian raid when she was just 5. Her only childhood possession is her mother's journal, but she can't read or write. Her `Paw' taught her everything about survival in the wild, but she has no social graces or academic education. Danger lurks in her history, but she is totally unaware of her real past.
Jon has a wealthy background, but has lost all faith in society. They complement, confuse and irritate each other, but through all the ups and downs, can't deny their mutual attraction.

This is a romance with a real story and real characters that sweeps you along with genuine emotion, developing characters, action and drama

I was surprised by the quality of this book. When you get a freebie on Kindle. It is usually short and barely readable. This story turned out to be a fully fleshed out book with interesting characters. At times the characters could be annoying and the book did often alternate between being slow moving to skipping over good storylines but I still enjoyed it.

Family can be being with people who love you.

Raised by a fur trapper after seeing her family slaughtered by Indians, Caitlyn meets her match in Jon. Her life is threatened by a past she doesn't remember and by a bitter Indian seeking revenge for his shame when his betrothed married another brave. I loved these characters and this unique story.

Mountain Magic (Daring Wester Hearts Series) by Trana Mae Simmos is an intriguing western romance with two charismatic main characters. Ms. Simmons introduces us to Jonathan (Jon) Clay from Virginia who flees to the mountains in Wyoming to escape a betrayal his stepfather and also his betrothed who marries his stepbrother, Jon is heartbroken and swears off women. Hence, his flight to the mountains far, far away. Will Jon ever get over his heartache? Will he find a woman he can trust and love?

As a novice trapper, Jon is taken under the guidance of Silas, who teaches him the skills he needs to survive and flourish. We also meet, Caitlin or Cat O’Shaunessy. Cat, as a five-year-old, witnessed the massacre of her family by the Blackfeet. As the lone survivor, she was rescued a week later by Mick O’Shaunessy who adopts her. He teaches her all about survival in the wilderness and trapping.

While visiting a Nez Perce encampment, Jon and Silas participate in a gambling game. As part of his winnings, Jon gets Cat. Only, she is known as Smelly Woman. Apparently, after recently loosing her adoptive father in an accident with a bear, Cat moved in with the Nez Perce to survive the winter. As a means of protection, Cat’s strategy was to have poor personal hygiene to keep unwanted male suitors away. Now, realizing that she has just been lost in a gambling game, an angry Cat faces traveling with two complete strangers. Like Jon, Cat, too, is emotionally wounded. She suffers from the trauma of the massacre and finds it difficult to connect and trust others. Silas, who happened to be a friend of Mick O’Shaunessy, agrees to take Cat under his protection. He also assumes the role of an “unofficial” matchmaker and referee between Cat and Jon.

This western romance is a heartfelt story focusing on two wounded characters and their journey toward healing, I appreciated the way Ms. Simmons uses literary devices like dialog helps the reader to observe the genuine emotion between Jon and Cat as they struggle to overcome their fears and accept their feelings toward each other. and descriptive language that weaves this story. Additionally, her use of descriptive language provides the reader with insight into the life and challenges that mountain men faced. Scenic descriptions also helped with transporting the reader into this story. I also liked the way she introduced suspense into her plot as we tried to figure out who was after Cat. The ending was a surprise. If you want to find out what happened to these two and solve the mystery behind who was after Cat then I recommend you read this book.

A well written adventure romance, Mountain Magic takes one back to the early days of settling the West. When Jon wins Cat in a game of chance, he is horrified to find himself being responsible for a wild child with the body of a woman. Whilst Jon has been disillusioned by relationships and dysfunctional family values in the past, Cat has seen and experienced more than any young woman of her age should. Despite that, she has been protected and loved even though she is feisty and self-protective. Jon's partner, Silas, has met Cat before and determines that he will protect her with his life, and if Jon wants to continue working with him, he has to accept the arrangement. Being cooped up in Cat's cabin in the mountains, Jon's attitude slowly thaws and much to Silas' silent amusement the sparks start to fly between the two, unwilling as they are to become involved in a romance. Cat is still suffering from the dreadful nightmares of the horrors she has seen and learning to trust is difficult for her. When danger once more comes knocking at Cat's door, she realises that she has so much to lose but for the first time she is not alone in fighting off the evil. I have read a few books in the past regarding mountain men and trapping for fur and this book cements in my mind the incredible risks they took living on their own out in the snowy wilds. I loved both Jon and Silas' characters and their protectiveness. Cat made it difficult for the men to understand her, especially as she refused to talk about all the hidden secrets in her heart. However, there is no doubting her loyalty to those she loves. I found it difficult to put this book down and I loved the descriptions of the era and lifestyle as it gave insights to a way of life that has mostly been lost, but laid the foundations for the future. I have read many old west romance novels. This one I throughly enjoyed because I was intrigued, I laughed and I cried. The romance/falling in love was real and pretty straightforward which was refreshing the struggle wasn’t necessarily made up just to have a story.
I really enjoyed it and the ending left me laughing and happy!!!

A five star read! Amazing and well written full of intrigue mystery and passion. Witty banter that end in electrifying passion between Cat and Jon. A plot for murder keeps the words and pages flying until everything is revealed.

Me wee darlin' and more.

I loved this book. Having never read this author before, I didn't know what to expect; however, I can now say "you won't be disappointed when you read this story." Living in the wilds since she was five, she couldn't read but her Jon taught her. Caitlin was stubborn, beautiful and a handful. The storyline is one you won't forget.

Trapping Love

Cat is a resilient woman who has a hard time accepting love from Jon, the trapper who wins her in a gambling match and changed her name of stinky woman (to avoid attention from braves and mountain men) back to Caitlyn . Love wins in a year or so.

Good Love Story

The characters in this book are realistic. A man wins a young woman in a bet. She is smelly but lovely. When she cleans up she is quite lovely. John works on her speech and she finds out that her grandfather loves her. Has a HEA.
