Lizbeth Meredith is a writer based in Tennessee with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in psychology. She teaches book marketing to new authors and is a speaker and podcaster.

Previously, Lizbeth has worked as a domestic violence advocate and a child abuse investigator, and finally 20 years with at-risk teens as a juvenile probation supervisor.

Her memoir, Pieces of Me: Rescuing My Kidnapped Daughters, was published by She Writes Press and is now a Lifetime television movie, Stolen By Their Father. More than another missing children’s story, Pieces of Me recounts Lizbeth’s struggle to bring home her internationally abducted daughters from Greece to Alaska. It’s the story of a 29 year-old woman whose own life was marked by family violence and childhood kidnapping who then faced her own $100,000 problem on a $10 an hour budget. It’s the story of the generous community in Anchorage, Alaska, and of a welcoming community in Greece who joined Lizbeth’s efforts to make the impossible a reality.

The answer to why you should book your solo adventure

All these stories are the answer as to why solo travel is vital to self-discovery. From travel post loss of a partner or a trip where no woman needed to compromise schedule, eating times, or activities with her partner, this book demonstrates from women from different countries, ages, background, and more that travel puts us in the moment and reframes our “home” lives.

Every chapter transported readers into a unique experience. Travel stories, poetry, and the path of self-discovery were all woven into the adventures. Of all the stories, a trip to the volcanic island of Iceland and several to the breathtakingly gorgeous mountainous country of Morocco in North Africa stood out the most. These fabulously entertaining stories are perfect for those who love solo travel or simply like reading about what gives everyday life value.

‘Unmapped’ is an anthology of inspiring travel stories and poetry by female writers. Contained within this collection are stories of bravery in the face of generational trauma, following the loss of loved ones, divorce, health scares, of healing and wisdom gained through traveling alone.

My favorite story in the collection was ‘36 Flights To Myself’ by Anu Verma. It is a truly inspiring story of healing and finding oneself through solo travel, written in beautiful, evocative prose. Anu’s journey to self-healing moved me and I found myself jotting down meaningful quotes:
‘…connection doesn’t require shared language, only shared humanity.’
‘I am not broken, I am in progress.’
‘…fear doesn’t have to be a wall, it can be a doorway’.

I also thoroughly enjoyed ‘Lost Causes’ by Annabelle “Bee” Baumann. It’s a tragic story of escaping the past, running away from responsibilities and attempting to change her destiny and that of her children:
‘I’d grown up in the smoke of other people’s poor decisions.’
‘Sometimes choosing freedom means choosing pain.’

‘A New View in Iceland’ by Linda Moore Kurtz was another favourite, that told the story of killer whale Keiko, the star of the ‘Free Willy’ movie’s release into the wild in Iceland.

‘Unmapped’ is a treasure trove of inspiring stories and experiences which might just get you reaching for your laptop and booking your own solo trip!

Half the royalties from sales of this book support the YWCA’s mission to help women and families escape violence and reclaim their futures - because sometimes the most dangerous place is the one we’re told is safest: home.
