General thoughts…
I love a vampire novel, tbh. Probably one of the first fantasy genres I really got into. This book is set in a world where vampires have recently become known to humans. The main character is second of the head political figure (Magnus) for the Vamps. Witches and Weres had already integrated into society, so the Vamps are the new supernatural being on the block. Part urban, part political, and part mystery, this paranormal fantasy has a lot of elements that felt fresh and exciting. I had trouble putting it down at points because I wanted to know what happened next.
Some things I loved…
- This book definitely stood out among paranormal fantasy books. I loved the mystery aspect as well as the setting and world-building. The politics were interesting and I liked learning about the background leading up to Magnus’ campaign.
- Max was such an interesting character to me. There were times I found myself relating to her a lot. I loved seeing her through Delilah’s eyes and how Delilah’s perception of Max changed over time. I really appreciated the autistic representation.
- The tension between Delilah and Max was absolutely delicious. I felt like I could sink my teeth into it. Despite not having Max’s POV, the writing made it clear how she was feeling during key scenes.
- I loved the poking fun at Twilight. As someone who, admittedly, was part of the big Twilight craze as a pre-teen/teen, it felt nostalgic for me. (And made me giggle more than once.)
Some things to consider…
- This is a slowww burn. It burns so good, and I loved the build up. But it isn’t hot and heavy early on.
- There were a couple times where I felt the gap between humans and vampires felt forced. Like Max apparently not knowing some very well-known vampire lore, and Delilah’s apparent lack of knowledge on humans despite being over 300 years old. I was able to overlook these little moments, but it made the narrative feel a touch forced at times and seemed a bit out of character.
Final thoughts…
Genuinely loved this! It was such an enjoyable read, and I barely wanted to put it down. From the autistic rep to the political aspects, this book stands out, and I highly recommend giving it a read.
