How to Kill Your Readers

Rate this book
*Book III in the How to Kill "quick-read" series Authors are supposed to entertain their readers - not hunt them. But after years of spoilers posted on release days, entitled DMs, and fans who believe that “constructive criticism” means sending hostile rants to our Gmail at 3 a.m., we thriller authors have decided it’s time to plot a different kind of ending where not every reader will make it to the final chapter.

With alliances forming, secrets spilling, and bodies starting to drop, this book club from hell becomes a masterclass in suspense… with a killer punchline. So read carefully. Because this time, the story isn’t asking who will die, it’s asking if you’ll be next on the list.

The invitations have been sent.
If you elect to read this book, consider yourself a plus-one.

Picking up where the hilarious novella How to Kill your Coworkers leaves off, this third installment is hilarious, sharp-tongued, and packed with jaw-dropping twists. How to Kill Your Readers (and get away with it) is proof that sometimes the pen really is mightier than the sword… but the sword gets the job done faster.

Though it CAN be read as a standalone, it'll make WAY more sense when read in order after How to Kill Your Neighbors and How to Kill Your Coworkers.

All 3 books in this series were ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ reads so if you haven’t started this series yet, it’s the perfect way to spend your Halloween weekend. If you’ve read Books 1 & 2, get to book 3 expeditiously. It definitely gave all the thrills & chills - and I think it’s my favorite one yet 🤭.

Books 1 and 2 available on audio, narrated by the author and let me tell ya.. She puts on a whole production in those audiobooks!

Readers… Read at your own risk.. You may make it out alive… you may not..

There is so much I want to say about this book, but I can’t, because I’d end up spoiling everything! And honestly, I don’t want to be next on her hit list 😅 This book was so good! I loved every single plot twist. I gasped, I laughed, and I definitely had a few “oh shit, go ahead!” moments. It was such a treat to see some familiar faces again (wink wink 👀). This felt like the perfect wrap-up for all three books, yet somehow still left me wanting more. If she decided to keep the story going, I’d read every single one without hesitation! 😘

I don’t even know how to explain how much fun I had with How to Kill Your Readers by J.R. Mason without accidentally spoiling something, so just trust me when I say this book was INSANE in the best way possible.

This series already had me hooked, but this one? This might actually be my favorite. The dark humor, the chaos, the creativity, the way I kept laughing while also questioning my morals… Perfection.

And PLEASE do yourself a favor and experience the audiobook alongside the book because OH.MY.GOD. I was not prepared for how immersive and ridiculously entertaining it would be. It completely elevated the experience. I felt like I got invited into pure unhinged chaos and honestly didn’t want to leave.

Also, major respect for how cleverly this book handled spoiler culture because if you know, you KNOW.

If you love dark comedy, messy characters, creative mayhem, and books that make you laugh way harder than you probably should… this series deserves your attention immediately.

Easy 5 stars. Honestly, if I could give it more, I would.

This book is going down as one of my all time favorites!
Sharp-witted comedy mixed with revenge makes this book a top read of the year!!!

JR Mason takes the realistic negative reader and author experiences and spins them into a hysterical , yet brutal, “what if” situation!

Five clever authors, nine rude and audacious reviewers, and the most unhinged book retreat had me hollering, laughing and wanting more!!!

Read Responsibly… and don’t forget to review!!!!😜

First, I’m going to tread carefully with this review, because what we say as readers can have real consequences.

Basically, these authors are getting pretty upset with book reviewers spoiling their hard work in these reviews. So, um, yeah. I’m going to leave it at that.

What I will say is this, the entire series is wildly entertaining. Every book had me hooked, and I loved every minute of it. The tension, the pacing, humor, and the unpredictability. It all worked well.

I’ll remain a loyal fan of this author, well that’s as long as she allows me to live. Quick read 173 pages. Check your triggers!

I decided to read this while listening to the audiobook and OMG!!! It enhanced the reading experience SO MUCH!!! Not that it needed it but it was a nice bonus especially hearing each author featured in this book voice their own characters. I literally laughed out loud at multiple parts. As an indie author myself I definitely took notes on how to kill people (in my books 🙃) and get away with it.

J.R. Mason returns with another wickedly funny, fast-paced entry in the How to Kill series, this time targeting the most unpredictable creatures of all: readers. How to Kill Your Readers (and Get Away With It) takes the chaos of the literary world and spins it into a brilliant mix of satire and suspense.

Mason masterfully blends humor and horror as an author finally snaps after dealing with spoiled endings, 3 a.m. “feedback,” and fan entitlement. The result is a clever, self-aware story that feels both terrifying and hilarious for anyone who’s ever loved (or critiqued) a book.

The writing is razor-sharp, the pacing nonstop, and the twists land with a smirk. Even without reading the first two (How to Kill Your Neighbors and How to Kill Your Coworkers), this one stands strong, but longtime fans will appreciate the continuity and callbacks.

How to Kill Your Readers is a quick, witty, and darkly satisfying page-turner that reminds us sometimes the pen is mightier than the sword… but the sword’s a lot more fun.

I loved this book down!!! Ate it right up!! J.R. Mason definitely did her big one with this read! *How to Kill Your Readers* is the third installment in the “How to Kill” series, and it absolutely delivers. This darkly humorous thriller follows a group of authors who are fed up with entitled readers and decide to plot revenge in the most devious of ways. With alliances forming, secrets spilling, and bodies starting to drop, this book club from hell becomes a masterclass in suspense with a killer punchline.

Kept me engaged from beginning to end and is one of my favorite reads of the year! I love the humor that J.R Mason adds to her writing that adds so much personality to her characters. The immersive reading experience through the audiobook was absolutely iconic - having all the fellow authors in the story as part of the audio brought such a unique dimension to the experience that made it even more engaging and fun. It felt like I was right there with them plotting and scheming!

Many of us have likely held some frustrations with aspects of the reading community, and this book gives you a chance to live vicariously through these authors in the most hilarious and twisted ways. The sharp-tongued dialogue, jaw-dropping twists, and witty commentary throughout make this such an entertaining ride. I would highly recommend this book and the entire series! It is a chef’s kiss! Definitely a big fan of hers after this series!

This was the perfect follow up to book 2. I gasped and laughed reading about the antics of the characters. The author wasted no time getting to the crazy, which I enjoyed. The ending was perfect.

Wow. Just…wow! This book was absolutely amazing! It had its OWN adventure and storyline while still keeping the same energy, theme, and all those lingering WTF and “what happened to…” questions from the first two books alive. The main characters were straight savage!

I was bold enough to preorder without knowing the title reveal, but I was confident that JR Mfkn Mason wouldn’t disappoint — and sure enough, she delivered again. These learning manuals… I mean, stories 😏 have easily become favs of mine. Each one levels up from the last, and Part 3 was no exception!

With a title like " How To Kill Your Readers" I wasn't sure where this was gonna go as a reader of this author. Book 3 brings new life to the series is a an unexpected way. This book has a cast of characters you will truly love and a plot that's truly to die for. This third book is bigger, more creative, and more ambitious. I can't give any spoilers cause I dont wanna end up on this author's "hit list" but I can promise you won't be disappointed with this third installment.

How to Kill Your Readers is another darkly humorous installment in J.R. Mason's How to Kill... series. Raya is back, and this time her homicidal schemes target the bane of every author's existence: rude, tactless reviewers. But Raya won't have to go it alone—four of her closest author friends are joining her for the wild ride. Meanwhile, her meddling, archnemesis neighbor, Linda, is still up to her old hijinks and refuses to let Raya forget that she knows all her dirty little secrets. Of course, Mason doesn’t stop at murder and mayhem—she adds a little authorial mischief into the mix, too.

I absolutely loved the addition of Raya’s fellow female thriller writers and how they became her partners in crime. Sometimes while reading this series, I forget that J.R. Mason actually writes herself into the story—after all, she is Raya. So imagine my delight when I realized that the other author characters are based on Mason’s real-life colleagues! How awesome is that? Mason gives each one a distinct, colorful personality that complements Raya’s perfectly, making their chaotic collaboration all the more entertaining.

Speaking of entertaining, none of the so-called "annoying" fan characters stood out quite like Phoenix. There was so much intrigue surrounding him because he felt completely different from the other fans invited to the retreat. His awkward exchanges with the group were sending me—especially whenever Kenya was involved. Plus, it was refreshing to see another character besides Linda who just might give Raya and her murder squad a run for their money.

The novella is as fast-paced as its predecessors, making it perfect for a quick, playful read. And yes, there’s plenty of death and shameless slaying to go around—but it’s all more comical than gruesome. Expect outrageously hilarious scenarios, wicked fun, and even a few unexpected twists along the way. The story also manages to tie up some lingering loose ends while hinting that there may still be more to come. (Though the author insists this is the final book, but fingers crossed—because you never know!)

Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: N/A
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes
Let me start off by saying. This author and the characters/authors mentioned are all diabolically petty.
and also, I love them.

This author explicitly asks to not spoil her books, and after having read this book I'm taking extra care in honoring her wishes. So I'll tell you what I learned from reading this book.

I learned that there are authors out there who know how to milk snakes.
I learned that the bit of entitlement we see out there online is just the tip of the iceberg
I learned more about the writing process
I learned never to piss off a thriller author or five or seven
I learned my humor is almost just as dark as Mrs. Mason's, because I was cackling!
I learned that there is nothing like sisterhood!
And I learned I need to tighten up some... Because even though I don't really people?? My love for books could have me ending up on the wrong side of a story😅

I loved every second of it!

Listen I have been in love with this entire series but I have to say this book is probably my favorite! Omg its so juicy!! We read up on some old familiar characters and a few new ones in book 3. This one had me cracking up the entire time! Of course in typical J.R. Mason fashion, there are a few twists, turns and loops BUT I promise you will love evey minute of it! I cannot wait to get the audiobook for this!. 10 stars if I could give it!Listen. I’ve been obsessed with this entire series from the jump—but this one? Oh, this one takes the cake, the plate, and the fork too! 🥵 Book 3 is pure chaos and comedy in the best way possible. We’re catching up with some old favorites, meeting new messy characters, and let me tell you—it’s JUICY.

I was cracking up so hard I had to pause and collect myself a few times 😭 And of course, in true J.R. Mason fashion, there are twists, turns, loops, and probably a full rollercoaster hidden in there somewhere.

If I could give this book 10 stars, I would—no hesitation. I’m counting down the days until the audiobook drops because I need to hear this chaos out loud.

Thank you J.R. for a free advance copy!

J.R. Mason returns with another installment of her How to Kill series, and this time sets her sights on problematic, entitled readers who are prone to rude online comments, write scathing, spoiler-filled reviews, and make sure to tag authors in their nonsense. In How to Kill Your Readers, Raya is juggling the fallout from her past choices, Linda’s meddlesome antics, and a new round of darkly hilarious revenge to deal with especially heinous readers.

I loved the exploits of the cast of characters, the banter between the Ladies of Thrills, and the twists I didn’t see coming! I was chuckling throughout and enjoyed the deliciously dark turn of events.

✨ If you love dark humor, twisty revenge tales, and ibookish drama, this book should be at the top of your reading list!

🚨 Read the series in order for maximum impact and enjoy how the storyline builds and unfolds!

How to Kill Your Readers is a sharp, wickedly entertaining read that blurs the line between writer and story, creator and creation. J.R. Mason delivers a suspenseful tale laced with dark humor, meta twists, and just enough blood-stained pages to keep you turning them late into the night.

The book shines most in its originality — Mason’s narrative voice is bold and self-aware, with moments that feel like the author is speaking directly to you (and maybe plotting your fictional demise). The pacing is strong, the atmosphere deliciously eerie, and the layered commentary on storytelling and obsession is both funny and unsettling.

This book is a thrilling read for anyone who loves mystery, satire, and a touch of the macabre.

If you like darkly clever stories that make you laugh, squirm, and think twice about your favorite authors… this one’s for you.

📚 Final Verdict: A smart, sinister page-turner that kills — figuratively and fictionally.

After faithfully following the events and characters of books 1 and 2, I was super stoked to hear of this newest entry into the series. It did NOT disappoint. In fact, this one is my favorite. This time, the target turns to the readers, the ones that just can't seem to "do right". This book takes them down - in a fun kind of way, of course. It's full of action, full of laughs, and all of the outrageousness we've come to love and expect from the series and the author. The pace is quick, the dialogue is witty and sharp, and the characters are refreshingly wild and crazy! My mouth was open from the first page after the table of contents and did not close until the very end.

You must read the first 2 and stay in order before diving into this one but what a DIVE it will be! Catch up and love it!

ARC review for How to Kill your Readers and get away with it.
It’s the third installment in the How to Kill your…series
It’s absolutely phenomenal! This book was a fun read from start to finish. I was honored to see my name along with many other familiar names. This read is bold, unpredictable, dark, twisted, and downright brilliant. J.R. Mason has officially outdone herself with this one. The story takes a look into an author who is fed up. I won’t say anymore. J.R. really doesn’t play about spoilers.
J.R’s ability to mix chaos, cleverness, and pure madness makes this story unforgettable. I highly recommend this book.

Yes I’m special and got to beta read
How to Kill Your Reader.
This was by far my favorite of the three instruction manuals!
Have a notebook handy, you’ll be taking lots of notes. This one comes with a plethora of useful and some technical information.

Just like the first two installments, will there be:
1. Murd£r… maybe.
2. Sex… perhaps.
3. Humor… of course it’s J.R. Mfkn Mason, duh.
4. A twist with a twist… is fat meat greasy and good with a side of mash potatoes, but will also clog your arteries if not consumed in moderation, yes.

J.R. Mason does not miss on this short fast pace thriller. Book 3 in the How To Kill… series is another wild ride. Let me warn y’all now: reviewing this author might not be the safest hobby. The twists come out of nowhere. That ending? Whew! And listen… Linda should’ve just stuck with that fake HOA mess🤦🏾‍♀️.

The characters are funny, chaotic in the best way, and honestly way too relatable. I’m keeping this review short and sweet. Go read the book and see why for yourself.

Happy reading! 📚✨

How to Kill Your Readers had me laughing and clutching my pearls at the same time. It’s dark, messy, and downright hilarious. It’s what happens when every author finally snapped and says, “You know what? Bet.” The twists are wild, the humor is petty in the best way, and the energy is unhinged but, dammit! So relatable! 10/10 if you have ever left a review giving away the whole damn plot of the book, please read this!

Killer Comedy 😂

I love this series! Each book is funnier than the last, and this one had me hollering from beginning to end. The plot was really creative and fun while still weaving in elements of mystery and suspense. The camaraderie between the friends and their dark sense of humor made the story that much more enjoyable.

I absolutely loved this! I will definitely think twice before giving a negative review. I don't want J.R. Mason and her homegirls coming for me. I loved each author's role in the book. The audiobook was phenomenal 👏🏾! Getting each author to play themselves was the icing on the cake. I feel like this series could go on forever.

Book 3? By far the best in the series. I devoured books 1 and 2 so quickly that I was compelled to read 3 just to see what our main character would do next. I cannot wait to catch up on all of the authors other work, she knows how to keep you engaged. You may even end up needing an alibi yourself.
