Lavender “Vinny” Blume has made her mark as a gritty touring musician with a fiercely loyal online following—a life that provides her the freedom to rush to her best friend’s side after she is nearly killed in a tragic accident. Determined to keep her focus on music and healing her family, Vinny is not prepared for the chaotic military life her friend married into…and one Marine, specifically. Too bad he’s considered part of the family.
Ruben Holt has dedicated his life to the Marine Corps, his brothers-in-arms, and the family he chose along the way. Loyal to a fault, he takes his role as godfather seriously—even if it puts him at odds with the sharp-tongued musician living above his best friend’s garage.
What began as the worst possible meet and greet quickly escalated into a silent war. Now she’s everywhere, holding front row tickets to the worst moments of his life. But behind the judgement and hostility, Ruben begins to see another side of Vinny…the one his friends adore. And it leaves him pondering the fine line between hate and passion.
Beneath the arguments lies a connection as raw and electric as any song Vinny has ever played…and as dangerous as any battlefield Ruben has ever faced. And if they can survive each other, they just might learn what it means to surrender—for love, not war.

wow! amazing!

I really enjoyed this book! It was a little hard to get into at first because of being 3rd POV but once I got into the flow of it I really liked it!

I LOVED Vinny! I loved Carys! I loved them all! The secrets and deceit in this book was like watching your favorite trash TV and just wanting all the details! I will definitely be reading more from this author!

Siân Upton’s Ruben grabbed me by the throat, told me to sit down, and then dared me not to feel things.
Thank you to The Author Agency for my gifted ARC.

This book starts messy and loud and a little uncomfortable, which honestly felt perfect for a story about a sharp-tongued musician and a Marine who both refuse to back down. Vinny is chaos wrapped in leather and lyrics, the kind of woman who feels everything at full volume. Ruben is discipline, loyalty, and emotional landmines he pretends aren’t there. Put them in close quarters and it’s less meet-cute and more meet-combat.

What I loved most is how real this felt. Not glossy romance real, but bruised-knuckles, bad-timing, say-the-wrong-thing real. The banter is biting without being cruel, the tension simmers forever, and the slow burn actually earns its name. I found myself smirking one page and quietly staring at the wall the next because something hit a little too close.

The military aspect isn’t romanticized into a cardboard backdrop. It’s heavy, complicated, and intrusive in the way real life is. At the same time, the found family dynamics soften the edges and make the emotional stakes feel higher. Ruben isn’t just fighting attraction. He’s fighting grief, guilt, and a lifetime of choosing duty over himself.

Vinny surprised me the most. Beneath the sarcasm and defensive barbs is a woman trying desperately not to be another casualty of someone else’s war. Watching these two slowly dismantle their assumptions about each other was deeply satisfying and occasionally painful in the best way.

“Some loves don’t ask politely. They demand surrender.”

If you like slow-burn military romance with sharp dialogue, emotional depth, and characters who feel like they’d be exhausting and incredible to know in real life, this one is worth your time.

I wanted so badly to give this book a higher rating, on the face of it, it covers and represents a number of things that aren’t always represented in books.

First you have a Black man/White woman romance, then there’s the disability rep as the FMC has albinism and the MMC has vitiligo, on top of that there is the military life aspect, and also within the secondary characters there is a definite rep for the difficulties faced when dealing with the depression of a loved one.

The plot is a great one filled with OWD, betrayal and a danger lurking in the distance, sounds great right? Unfortunately the execution just wasn’t there. Don’t get me wrong i still read the entire thing but to be honest it dragged for significant parts of the story, there was so much filler information that I could have skipped past pages and pages and still had a great understanding of what was happening in the story, and yet when it came to a significant parts of the storyline (that lurking danger i mentioned, stalking in the background) were anticlimactic when they reached their conclusion (with minimal/no karma, the culmination of those situations happening off page for reasons I’m not entirely sure of.

To be honest I would have rated it higher had it been shorter and with a more clear ending to the supposed danger as the writing when it got to the story was actually great, the characters themselves were likeable, and you really wanted their relationship to succeed so all in all it had a lot of potential but it just lacked in the execution.

This book kicks off with a bang, portraying a story of a fiery musician, Vinny, and a disciplined Marine, Ruben, who clash in a battle of wills. A plot that feels real and is captivating, this book is a must-read.

Vinny is a whirlwind of emotions, while Ruben is a stoic figure with hidden emotional turmoil. Their interactions are intense and far from a typical meet-cute. The authenticity of the characters and their dynamics is what stood out to me. The banter is sharp yet not malicious, and the slow -burn romance feels genuine.

The military backdrop is portrayed realistically, adding depth to the story without romanticizing it. The found family element adds a layer of complexity and emotional depth to the plot. Vinny is all about protecting her family.

Vinny's character development is particularly compelling, as she navigates her own struggles while trying to connect with Ruben. The gradual unraveling of their defenses is both satisfying and moving.

Overall, we loved this story. The mystery and the drama added depth to the story. The characters were amazing, as we have now developed a soft spot for Abner, aka Abe, who happens to be Rubin's dad. Vinny is a character not easily forgotten; that woman had spunk and a mouth to go with it. We loved it.

P.S This book is a 3-book series. It is advisable to read Eric first, as this series has an ongoing plot that has become more dangerous with each and every book presented to us.

I enjoyed this story and having read the first one in the series it was great to get back into it. 😍

The story flowed well and gave good details about things from the first book. This helps so you wouldn't necessarily have to read book 1 first before diving into this one. The continuity in this book was really good too.

I find it difficult to read in the 3rd person and have not finished books that do. However, this series is written in that way but it doesn't feel like it. It's hard to explain but I forget that's what I'm reading in, maybe because the story just pulls you in and a lot of it is about the person talking so it's not fully like it's the 3rd person POV. It was easy to read and I liked how it worked.

The feelings were evoked early on to sympathise with Ruben and his concerns for his marriage, upon returning home from his deployment. It also had me giggling in places. This is a testament to how well written it is to allow you to feel the emotions but also laugh too.💃🏻

It's definitely a slow burn love story. As the plot moves on and you get answers to questions you don't feel the slow burn at times.

I do love a military romance and this didn't disappoint. I'm definitely looking forward to hopefully getting more in this series! 😍

I really enjoyed this story. I also liked how this author wrote the storyline and characters. They give this book a very realistic feel by writing specific situations or actual life events that happened to these characters in this story which comes across in their writing as believable like something that actually would happen in life. I love being able to read something and feel a connection, especially to the characters, which this clearly demonstrates in the way it's written. It's a well-written page turner with just the right amount of everything. And I'd recommend reading this. It is a very good book.

Thank you to the author and the author agency for an advance copy. My opinions are my own and freely expressed.

This is the second book in this impressive series, and this is Lavender / Vinny and Ruben’s story.
Vinny is a touring musician, who rushes to her best friend’s side after a tragic accident, but she is not prepared for the chaotic military life which her bestie has married into, specifically one marine in particular, Ruben.
This is a well written easy to read story, with found family, friendships, emotions, loyalty, tension, forced proximity, opposites attract, challenges, self-discovery, jealousy, healing, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, twisted, and unpredictable, addictive page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

This was my first time reading this author, and unfortunately I ended up DNF-ing at around 20%. From the very beginning up until where I stopped, I felt pretty confused and struggled to fully get into the story. I kept waiting for things to click, but it just didn’t happen for me.

The writing itself it’s just not my style, so I had a hard time connecting with the characters and the overall flow. I can see how this book could work for other readers, especially those who enjoy this kind of setup and tone, but personally it just wasn’t for me.

Thank you to The Author Agency & Sian Upton for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Ruben Holt, Marine and best friend of Eric (book 1) and Vinny (Lavender Blume) the musician/best friend of Carys, wife to Eric, are oil and water from day one.

Different personalities, but both super protective of their besties, they avoid each other until they can’t anymore. Their shared love of their besties and godchildren brings them together.

I loved the push pull of their animosity, but also the deeper emotions running under their outward shell.

There is a clear happy ending, but the whole ex-wife, Carla, and ex-lover, Perez hangs in the air. And I hope it concludes in Zeke’s book (book 3).

I don’t read a lot of military romance but I’m glad that I didn’t let that deter me because I really had a good time with this book. Some of the subject matter hit a little close to home but I feel like that had me connecting with the book even more. This is my first book by this author and the Banter in this book alone would be enough to have me wanting to read more of their writing. I definitely recommend this book and it is a must for your 2026 tbr!!

I am in love with Ruben. I love everything military. So I was excited when I was chosen to be an ARC reader for this one. It did not disappoint. This book was emotional. Both Vinny and Ruben had gone through so much in their lives. But they were both strong people in their own right. There were messy and complicated. But they always showed up. These two had my heart. Such a good book. I can’t wait to read more.

Vinny and Ruben
Ruben by Sian Upton is a heartbreakingly beautiful book.
I received an ARC of this book and I am so thankful.

This story is about Vinny who is a musician and Ruben who was a marine. You will discover tension and chemistry between the MMC and the FMC. The writing makes the emotions so real and it breaks your heart right along with both of them.

You will get the following in this book, found family, banter, raw emotions, str5ong love and A HEA.
This is a must read for people who love military romances.

Upton pushes emotions far beyond their comfort zone. Ruben and Vinny are not afraid to live their truths, even at the risk of breaking their own hearts. When life gets messy and heartache runs deep, it always pays to know that you have people you can count on watching your back. Ruben is breathtaking.

This military romance is perfect for those that enjoy this type of read. The emotions are so raw and realistic. And the characters just pull you into this story. Vinny (Lavender) and Ruben start off at war with each other but as the layers start to peel away, they are addictive.

Great connection between these two. Enjoyed their story!

This novel was a fascinating second installment in the Devoted Brothers series (there is at least one more story in the works - yay!). Like the first book, it has a family saga vibe (large cast of characters) with a romance that takes a while to even begin. Add to this a secondary suspense plot with some criminal goings on, and this is quite the engrossing tale. The book focuses on Ruben, who is a Marine living across the street from his best friend Eric, his wife Carys, their two children (Maya and baby Brendon) and her best friend Vinnie (nickname for Lavender - love it!). Both Ruben and Vinnie are godparents to Maya; oddly they haven't actually met each other when the story begins. When they do finally meet,  it's a stunning meet/cute, and then they mostly clash, despite being devoted to Maya and the rest of her family. There are plenty of other side issues affecting all of their lives, such as Eric and Ruben's deployments. I loved how Ms. Upton wove her story around the everyday lives of these active military men in such a convincing way. Vinnie is a professional musician/songwriter, and her job is also important to the story. This book was an engaging read, and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I received an ARC and volunteered to write a review.
