A strange object cuts through the sky and crashes in the woods outside of a small town called Whitfield Springs in Oregon. In it, a monster made from metal slips out and digs into the Earth. It swims, cutting through the dirt like it were water, looking for meat and destroying everything in its wake. Agent Smith, a man employed by a secret organization that no one knows the name of, has arrived in the small Oregon town, and his sole objective is to capture and kill the monster that lurks beneath the ground of Whitfield Springs. But little does he know just how hard it’ll be to kill…
Stream punk shark meets men in black? I’m here for it.
Sharks are already nightmare fuel in the ocean, but a massive mechanical land shark that can sense your footsteps through the ground? Abso-fucking-lutely not. Dj James always seems to come up with the wildest creature features. I really never know what to expect from him but I’m never disappointed. This was such a fun, gore filled read that carries a certain B-list horror movie charm. As someone who’s a total sucker for cheesy shark movies, this hit all the right notes for me. Definitely a favorite from him thus far. I loved it.
Reminiscent of a movie you'd see on Syfy Channel or Movie Macabre With Elvira, I thoroughly enjoyed this unorthodox shark story. Full speed ahead action, there's no downtime to be found. Plenty of blood, guts and quirky characters. Agent Smith and The Man In The White Suit are two interesting characters. Their little humorous quips will either make you chuckle or roll your eyes. Very entertaining. There's one scene that is so morbid, disturbing and quite hilarious I think I should see a therapist. Definitely worth a read.
Dirt Shark from DJ James is exactly what you think it is. It's an absolutely dumb premise that is actually somehow entertaining as hell. Just like the old B-Grade movies of the past, or the ridiculous Sci Fi Channel movies from some years ago. A couple chapters in, I considered putting it down and forgetting about it. But it is a paperback ARC that the author was gracious enough to send me for review. So, I ventured on, and I'm glad I did. As is expected with books like this, there's some humor scattered about the story. One thing that amused me, though, was how many times the shark was referred to as something out of a steam punk movie. Going in to this type of thing, you know you're not going to be reading the next literary masterpiece. But what you will get is a comical good time full of imagination on overdrive. If you like silly reads, or just need a break from more serious horror, give Dirt Shark a read!
...as a B-movie book adaptation can be. This is 5 stars in the same way that the movie "The Stuff" is 5-stars. Its a popcorn book that provides nothing but sheer entertainment and ridiculousness. If the title "Chopping Mall" makes you snicker, you're going to love this book (and that movie).
This is such a fun read! It's fast paced, bloody and with a heavy dose of campy silliness that always makes for a fun time in the horror genre. If you enjoy the movies Tremors, Jaws or Men in Black....you will have a blast reading this one!
