[Thanks to Netgalley and Kodansha for an ARC of this manga in exchange for an unbiased review.]

The plot of this is shaping up great, but the premise is not so much. And by premise, I mean that our lead, Yuki, would be so desperate to get married because of societal pressure and such that she would go with this slimeball who is so obviously shady.

Look, I know people do crazy things for love and all that, but we see that Yuki is otherwise hardworking, clever, resourceful, driven, etc etc. That she apparently ignores warning signs like she’s driving backwards through a construction site at 2am while hiding in the trunk does not make sense.

It also hurts some of the revelations; she’s been dating for all this time and never bothered to look up or visit Yoji (her fiancée)’s place of work? There’s having blinders on and there’s all that stuff I described last paragraph.

And Yoji is blatantly using her for some kind of shady scam and she just goes along with it because he’s in debt that needs to be cleared before they can marry, supposedly. Yuki, honey, check the receipts. Literally. There’s trust and then there’s… see two paragraphs ago.

Anyway, once the actual plot kicks up, involving a guy Yuki brought to Yoji who wound up dead? That’s when things really start to clip along. Shun, who is dangerous and sexy in the way of good thriller leads (a tattoo? Gasp!), enlists Yuki’s help to find his brother, the guy who wound up dead, and his brother’s now missing wife.

These two begin to meet up frequently and use their combined skills to begin getting to the bottom of this, but it’s pretty clear they’re not exactly great at this just yet. Which is a good thing; the tension and revelation portions of the story are a lot of fun. And let’s not forget that other sort of tension that starts bubbling up, obviously.

What’s going on with the mysterious list they find? Can Shun be trusted? Can Yuki? There’s a bizarre guy in a goat mask talking about mind control that just has to figure into this plot somehow, but sure doesn’t yet. Lots of tantalizing little threads are waiting to be pulled.

Which is fine - the vibes do a good job and there are intriguing questions being asked. I also liked Yuki’s younger coworker, who is very carefree and therefore likely to end up dead before this is done. It replicates that specific sort of genre feel and I thought that was solid.

There’s also the aforementioned whiff of romance as Shun and Yuki get closer together, even though they couldn’t have started off on a worse note. It reminds me of a solid Hollywood thriller and it had that atmosphere down pat by the closing chapters.

So, yes, you have to accept that somebody as smart and capable as Yuki would let herself be taken in by Yoji. Yoji’s an excellent sleazy guy, but he’s not that good at hiding his evil. The opening doesn’t click at all as a result, but once the story starts to move it gets a lot better.

3.5 stars - not rounding it up because it needed a stronger foundation, honestly, but I liked where it went by the end. It’s a little pulpy, but that’s not a bad thing, and it certainly makes me curious where it goes next.

I received this book from the publisher on Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

So I am not feeling too well, so I am going to write a shorter review. In this book we meet a girl (who I didn't always like) who has a sweet fiancee. Or well. I had my doubts from the beginning because he acts very dubious about things + goes from sweet to creep in mere seconds. And as we find out as the story continues things are BAD with capitals all over. She meets a guy who lost his brother and she talked to him before things. Through that we find out even more things that had me going OMG. The whole mystery/what is going on is pretty great and things really did pick up with the ending being a cliffhanger that had me gasping (but not entirely surprising me), but the characters are the downfall in this manga. The MC is wishywashy and annoyed me. Shun (the brother of) just went from hot to cold and I just didn't like how he handled things. The fiancee was just a creepfest from the start go, I don't get why anyone would start dating THAT.
The art was pretty good. And yes, I am curious what is going to happen next, but I am not sure how much of the characters I can stomach. If this one is just 2 volumes I will keep reading, any more, nah.

At thirty-two, Yuki just wants to get married, especially after her father's stroke and after meeting Yoji through a dating app, she was positive she has met the perfect man. He was so kind and considerate at first, but now, two years later, that seems to have just been a mask. Every time she asks him when they will get married, he puts it off a little bit longer, saying that he just needs his business to stabilize first, and it seems he only shows up to her home to have sex and leave. Plus, he asks her to find well off men on dating apps for him, assumably to invest in his business; however, one afternoon, a man by the name of Shun shows up at her work. He tells her that his brother was one of the men she had contacted on a dating app on Yoji's behalf, but he's dead now, dying in a horrific car accident. What's worse is that shortly before he passed, he married a woman who has now disappeared with the proceeds of a thirty-million yen life insurance policy. He is more than positive that Yuki helped Yoji with a life insurance scam. At first, Yuki doesn't want to believe it, but Shun keeps showing up and presenting more and more evidence that Yuki may just have had a hand in murdering not just Shun's brother but countless other men. Determined to get to the truth, she agrees to assist him in catching Yoji, and it soon becomes very clear that her fiance may just be the devil in disguise.

So far, this has been pretty great! It is a very stereotypical story about a controlling man taking advantage of a woman with very little self-esteem, so on the uniqueness front, it hasn't added anything new, but I still enjoyed it. I do kinda feel like Yuki and Shun are going to eventually hook up, and I genuinely am not sure how I feel about that though. She's clearly made some poor life decisions when it comes to dating to begin with, and I'd rather see this progress with her not jumping straight into a new relationship after discovering her current fiancé may be a murderer. That being said I actually really love Shun, so it's hard to not want them to hook up. *sigh*

I really loved the art in this one as well, so all in all this is definitely a series I will continue at the very least because Yoji is clearly a slimeball and deserves to be taken down.

As always, thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha for the eArc!

Whoever You Are, I Love You (Volume 1) follows the story of a 32-year-old office worker, Yuki, who is desperate to get married. All she sees on social media are her friends getting married and starting their own families. Her boyfriend, Yoji, promised that they would get married after he finishes paying off the debt from his failed business venture. However, as time goes by, Yoji begins asking Yuki to do increasingly strange things. Yuki’s doubts begin to take shape when a mysterious man named Shun appears, claiming that Yoji may be involved in a shady business deal that led to someone’s death.

--

This manga was quite a surprise to me. I have not read any josei titles in awhile so I knew I had to pick it up when it finally became available.

Whoever You Are, I Love You (Volume 1) had a really intriguing and timely premise. In a generation dominated by technology, everything seemed easier, even finding someone who you thought you would spending your life with. This is exactly how Yuki met her fiancé, Yoji.

I really appreciated how the mangaka presented the conflict in this volume. I love how it shifts from softer, more comforting vibes into something eerily disturbing as you turn the pages, especially when we begin to see glimpses of the potentially shady things Yoji is involved in. Shun’s involvement later on adds even more tension, which I truly liked.

Although I have to say that I find the characters a little half-baked. By half-baked, I mean that I sometimes find it hard to get into their headspace because they seem to change their minds too often and a bit too quickly for my liking. However, after reading this, I decided to give the series some grace, considering that this is only its first volume.

Thank you to Keiku Hagiwara, Kodansha Comics, and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. Whoever You Are, I Love You (Volume 1) will be released on June 23, 2026.

Manga | Mystery | Dating App

Thank you to Kodansha Comics for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!

• Plot:
Whoever You Are, I Love You Vol 1 introduces Sato, a 32-year-old MC as a temp receptionist. Other official female workers at her building view her as a “professional slut” because they feel she’s using the job with low pay to find a husband. She’s eager to get married, given her age.

• What I Liked:
The pacing is great, and there’s mystery.

• What Didn’t Work for Me:
It’s not hard to figure out that, after being introduced to her “fiancé” through a dating app, he seems to be using her because he wants her to keep using the dating apps to find a rich guy to help them get married sooner. She’s so focused on getting married before her dad dies that she tosses out logic when it comes to him.

• Themes / Ideas:
Deception, schemes for money, killing, etc.

• Who I’d Recommend It To:
Those who’d like to read mysteries or see potential cons of dating apps.

• Overall Thoughts:
This volume is full of mystery and is fast-paced. If you have ever considered using a dating app, you probably won’t want to after reading this. I’m interested to see what happens in the next volume. There are 2 MCs: Sato and a guy connected to her through the person she’s dating. They team up against that guy. I wonder if there will be romance between them or double-crossing. No way to tell which way it goes, because people are mostly not who they appear to be in this series so far.

5 🌟
I woke up to this in my inbox and finished it before work in a single sitting. It was so ridiculously fast-paced and bingeable.

Art Style
The artwork is BEAUTIFUL. It was in black and white, but was clean, precise, and expressive. I was literally speeding through the comic so fast on my iPad.

I went in without many expectations and was surprised by how dark this gets- Which I actually loved. The female protagonist can't seem to catch a break. But selfishly, why would we want her to? That is kind of the point of reading a comic - it really was one thing after another.

Although our FMC was not the smartest woman in her 30s, she is kind, slightly naive and caring. I am still routing for her, and here for the character development already visible in this first volume has me very invested in where she goes from here. There is a lot of room for her to grow and I don't mind reading about an FMC who really finds her own.

Cliffanger Ending
And WTF was that ending and WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL SEPTEMBER. I am excited to know what happens next and zero patience! What a fun read.

Recommendation:
If you enjoy dark, fast-paced manga with beautiful art and a protagonist with room to grow, pick this up immediately. Just remember to check your TWs.

Whoever You Are, I Love You 1 (ARC Version)
Release Date: Jun 23 2026
This is a remarkably effective suspense manga that feels grounded in real-world anxieties. Yuki Sato is a protagonist caught in the "limbo" of her early 30s—facing judgment for being unmarried and working a dead-end job while her father’s health declines.
The brilliance of the story is how it weaponizes that vulnerability. Her boyfriend Yuji's exploitation of her is chilling, and the introduction of the "mysterious death" subplot involving Shun elevates the story beyond a simple romance. It's a dark, twisty game of cat-and-mouse that asks how well we truly know the people we love. If you enjoyed the tension of Perfect Blue or psychological seinen that deals with the female experience, this is a strong recommendation.
I loved the duality of the plot. On one hand, you have a grounded critique of societal expectations; on the other, you have a dangerous game that could result in death. I found myself fully invested in the tension between Yuki, Yuji and Shun. It’s dark, twisty, and does a great job of showing how the need to "fit in" can lead someone into a nightmare. Definitely looking forward to the next volume. I couldn't put it down and I'm eager to see where Yuki’s journey goes next.

Whoever You Are, I Love You 1 by Keiku Hagiwara is the first volume in a new series that will appeal to adult readers everywhere. The story revolves around Yuki, a 32 year-old woman, who is in a relationship with Yoji. At first, Yoji seems like the perfect man, but Yuki starts to uncover devastating secrets in his past. Yoji may have been involved in the death of a young woman. Not only that, but Yoji doesn't seem to love her anymore. With her dream of a wedding slowly dying, will Yuki find the courage to leave Yoji once and for all?

Overall, Whoever You Are, I Love You 1 is an amazing josei manga that will appeal to fans of the Tears on a Withered Flower webtoon or Tomorrow I'll Be Someone's Girlfriend. One highlight of this book is how it appeals to adult readers of manga. I am a bit tired of reading shojo manga about high schoolers in love, so when I saw that this manga was coming out aimed at the adult demographic, I knew that I had to read it right away! This book definitely satisfied my need for something with themes of love, betrayal, and revenge. The ending was also great, and I can't wait until Volume 2 comes out. If you're intrigued by the synopsis above, or if you're a fan of josei manga in general, I highly recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in June!

dark emotional mysterious tense
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Just what kind of a person are you, really?

I'm a sucker for mystery manga like this, with morally grey characters that are thrust into situations so convoluted that you can't help but root for them in their misery. It starts off simple enough, with our protagonist Yuki trying her hardest to keep up with the many expectations for women in their 30s and to not disappoint her elderly father, whose only wish was to see her married. Although she has her boyfriend, things aren't as they seem, and within one volume, the author managed to capture and ensnare their readers with the crumbs of possibilities this story could spiral into. I adored the little light within the characters, made them more dimensional instead of just bland puppets to move the plot forward - I especially love how Yuki's kindness and naivete was flipped from being her weakness to her biggest asset. I'm really excited on how this would go, and I hope Kodansha licenses the rest of the volumes as well.

Big thanks to the publisher for providing me this ARC via NetGalley. All quotes are taken from the uncorrected proof. This does not in any shape or form influence my review on this book.

★★★★☆

This volume had me in my feelings in a way I was absolutely not prepared for. It starts off soft and sweet, and then suddenly I was clutching the pages, unable to read fast enough. Hagiwara has a real talent for slipping emotional gut punches into the quiet moments, and every time I thought I knew where the story was headed, it swerved just enough to make my heart stutter.

The characters are messy in that painfully human way, awkward, yearning, trying so hard to connect while tripping over their own insecurities. It’s tender, frustrating, adorable, and it made me want to shake them and hug them at the same time. The emotional beats land, the humor is well timed, and the art carries so much nuance in the smallest expressions.

Did it drag in a couple spots? Yeah. Did I occasionally want to scream “JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER” into the void? Also yes. But the payoff is worth it, and the final chapters absolutely deliver before ending on a cliffhanger that had me immediately needing the next volume.

3.5 stars, rounded up.

Two years ago, Yuki Sato met the perfect man, Yoji, on a dating app. Desperate to fulfill her ailing father's final wish— to see her get married— Yuki agrees to help Yoji in whatever ways she can so that he is financially ready for marriage. Once a handsome stranger, Shun, approaches her with suspicions that Yoji played a part in his brother's death, Yuki must confront the red flags she's been ignoring.

Whoever You Are, I Love You is a fast paced thriller exploring the pressure for women to marry and the red flags people ignore to find love. Finding out your partner isn't who you thought is a nightmare, let alone finding out they might be responsible for murder! The premise is intriguing, and I was definitely hooked while reading! I felt like Yoji was a little too cookie cuter villain/manipulator, and Yuki was a little too naive for someone in their 30's, but I still really enjoyed my time reading and flew through this first volume. I can tell that Yuki's character development will be strong in this series!

Thank you NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book

A different type of manga to what I usually read...but you know what...I really appreciated the change.

Whoever You Are, I Love You follows our main protagonist Yuki who is struggling to keep up with societal norms...such as getting married, having babies, buying a house etc. She does have a fiancé, Yoji, but they can only get married when his business starts making money. He suggests Yuki introduces him to wealthy matches on a dating app, who he says will hopefully help him turn the fortunes of his business around, allowing them to get married.

But things aren't all what they seem with Yoji, and when she is approached by a stranger about some disappearances, she starts to wonder who she is actually engaged to...

I thought Yuki's story was really quite heart wrenching. She just wants to be like everyone else...find someone who loves her and get married...maybe start a family. This is a theme which is very common in some countries, where women of a certain age are expected to have their lives together by a certain age. The pacing was steady and kept you gripped right until the end, I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Thanks Kodansha, for licensing more Josei! I'm so delighted

The story is about a 32-year-old Yuki Sato, who is clinging to her unhappy relationship in the hope that someday her boyfriend will marry her. Unfortunately, even after dating him for two years, she still knew almost nothing about him; he's a dating-app swindler and not only taking money but also allegedly involved in a murder, and things went crazier from there.

It's a sad thing, really, being an Asian woman, especially when people expect you to get married at a certain age, then you're desperate to "anyone will do as long as I'm married" and don't want to see the truth that he's in fact not really a good person.

I don't particularly like the FMC, and I think her naivety led to many of these bad outcomes, and the art didn't really capture the emotions that it was trying to portray, so I'm not a big fan of it. But the story has a potential, hope its getting better from here on.

Thanks Kodansha and Netgalley for the ARC!

Unfortunately i did not love this book, when i get a chance to read arcs i try to be as open as possible therefore i will not hide my opinions.
The book is about Yuki wanting to get married and meeting Yoji via a dating app. The book seems like it is a romance but as the story progresses you soon learn this is not the case. Yuki is asked to do odd requests and learns everything is not perfect with Yoji.

The problem i had was that i didn't like the characters, Yuki seemed to lack depth and quite shallow while side characters were under developed. Maybe it was an attempt at being vague or adding suspense but to me it really seemed to bring down the book.
I have a lot of questions left and if the series was published i would be interested in reading it now to answer these but seeing as its not i probably wont.
Thank you again for the arc.

Wow! I am so upset I read this as an ARC because I'm ready for the entire series now haha. I've recently started reading manga and graphic novels again after a 15 years hiatus just due to being busy and not really knowing where to start. I really enjoy the format and most of the stories, but this one blew me away. I read this book at 2 am because I had so many questions about who Yoji is, and I still have questions! Poor Yuki feels stuck between a rock and a hard place after trying to get married while dealing with her ailing father. All she wants is him to see her married, and now she's stuck in this confusing and dangerous ring that Yoji seems to be a part of. I was glued to these pages for both the illustrations and writing. I can't wait for the second one to come out, and I definitely recommend this book if you enjoy mystery and manga.

Yuki Sato is a 32-year-old temp, and all she wants to do in life right now is get married before her fragile father passes away. But she can't get her boyfriend to commit -- just one of many red flags he's giving off. In fact, a potential investor she sent her boyfriend's way has turned up dead, and that man's brother is now poking around Yuki looking for clues as to what happened.

This wants to be a sexy suspense thriller, but it's just half-baked cheese, the sort of dreck that would have been a direct-to-video B-movie back in the day, getting checked out from Blockbuster only because it was the last thing still on the shelf on a Friday night.

Thank you, Netgalley and Kodansha, for the EARC.

I found this very interesting, but our female lead, Yuki Sato, was someone I found to be very annoying, and I would say that her desperation to get married to fulfil her father's final wish probably played a part in this. She meets, who seems to be the perfect man (Yoji), but as readers, we see many red flags about this man, something that Yuki is completely blind to, and upon meeting Shun, he begins to indirectly point out the many red flags, to which she completely denies and ignores, despite the seriousness behind them, and what they ultimately lead to.

This is too early to give a proper overall feeling about this, and will probably need to read the next couple of volumes to have a better overall feel about this, but this is enough to get me curious about the next volume.

Diving into this manga, I was hoping for some sense of suspense and a fair amount of drive from the main character, Yuki. Given some time to sit with the manga, I understand why the mangaka chose to make her much more initially passive to set up the circumstances that made her fall in with her fiance, despite the obvious romance scam. As for the suspense element, I'm not feeling the tension of the story so much as getting intermittent bursts of drama to react to.

I'm getting a sense that I'm not going to get what I want out of the execution of the series, so I'll likely not read further volumes. It's got an interesting enough hook, but also a lot of scenes feel too familiar to similar "woman doesn't know who she's fallen for" stories to me, so I'm making the personal decision to not retread familiar territory.

i can’t lie, this had me gagged. like, it had me audibly gasping. even though i predicted what would happen i still reacted like i was fully taken aback, which i think goes to show how easily enjoyable this manga was. i think my rating for this is largely based off of that, rather than necessarily it being the most shocking story. i am NOT a critic, i am unserious and here for the vibes and i devoured this. i had a fun time with it bc it was messy and i love the drama of it all, and i think if that’s your jam then you may have fun with this too!

A pretty promising start to this series! The art didn't strike me as particularly unique, but it does seem to have the capacity to express some of the creepier elements of this story. I love the cover design though, and it certainly suggests a mysterious plot. A little more development in the main character would be helpful, it's a little tough to suspend disbelief that she goes from doting fiancée to determined sleuth. Surprisingly, I was intrigued by the dynamic between Yuki and Shun, and hopefully subsequent issues will dive a little deeper. This is a fine choice if you are looking for something fast paced and thriller adjacent.

While our main character believes her biggest obstacle is life is not getting married soon enough, she discovers that her fiancé is exploiting her in order to get into contact with wealthy men. Concerning this, a looming murder, investigated by the victim's brother, waits to further complicate her peace.

You have to forgive the main character for being in denial because of the abundance of red flags, and the true nature of her fiancé and situation appears quite forward. Nonetheless, the story's quick pace and little twists make up for this and deliver a quick and fun read. Additionally, the art is clear and pretty to follow.

3.5 Stars. Thanks to NetGalley and publishers for an ARC for an honest review.

Whoever You Are, I Love You 1 follows Yuki Sato, a temp worker desperate to get married before her ill father passes away. She meets Yoji on a dating app and he keeps postponing a date to get married. Shun, a man who lost his brother in a mysterious way, confronts Yuki about his brother’s death. She soon starts to realize that Yoji is not who she thinks he is.

Ooooh a lot of suspense and drama! I really feel for Yuki’s character because she’s such a sweet person who got involved with the wrong man. There’s a spark between Yuki and Shun, who is much better for her. I liked the character designs and pacing of the story. I will definitely pick up volume 2 to see where the story goes.

People criticizing Yuki for being stupidly in love to disregard any and all red flags, just didn't read the title of the book. We need plot somehow, people. Still, I get how it's frustrating. I think premise is rather interesting, just the set pieces is dumb. Like, Yuki being convinced to get money through essentially finding a sugar daddy. Like why out of all things is that your plan, Yoji? That's why more messy and you're lucky Yuki is desperate enough to follow through.

Shun is interesting, though. Brings forth a very stereotypical sexy thriller, but ey what can you do?

I requested "Whoever You Are, I Love You" for the cover's Y2K vibes, without many expectations, and was surprised by an amazing story about how a woman had her deepest wishes weaponised against her while in a toxic relationship, and became an accomplice to something awful, and then tried to get herself out of it.

I don't want to say much more because I don't want to spoil it, but this would be absolutely AMAZING adapted into TV. I would love to get to read the sequels.

Yuki is desperate to get married, but her boyfriend Yoji keeps making excuses and starts acting more and more weird. Things take a dark turn when a man called Shun shows up claiming Yoji may be involved in a life insurance scam and that Yuki might’ve unknowingly helped.

This first volume was really entertaining and kept me hooked, even if the plot feels a bit basic so far. I liked Shun a lot, but I hope Yuki doesn’t jump into another relationship too quickly. The art is simple but has a few strong moments.

Really looking forward to the next volume on September

Broooooo the way this volume ended is not diabolical but I need more!
What are these people doing?!?!?!?!
Is Yuki gonna find love? Are they gonna find the brother? I need to know everything!

This story is told in such a "fun" way where we know nothing, we don't know if people are going missing or if they're being murdered we don't know what shady thing Goto is doing but it sure is something dangerous. I cannot wait to read more.

Thank you to Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I loved the art style and the premise. Shun is so lovable! I hate Goto’s guts, and Yuki is slowly but surely redeeming herself. The story so far has built a really good foundation for a thriller. I’m really intrigued, and the first volume left me wondering what is going to happen next. I hope there’s a solid love story in this too!

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

thank you NetGalley and Vertical Comics for this ARC in exchange for my honest review

I am curious to see where the story will go because as of right now everything is a hot mess. Our FMC has found herself is a chaotic entanglement with a fiancé who quite honestly needs to be banned from the dating apps since he seems really creepy. I do think Yuki is a little naive so i hope the new guy isn't taking advantage of that.

let's see what happens in volume 2!

An interesting idea for a thriller. I don't pick up many thriller manga and while this didn't disappoint it didn't wow me either. This might be, possibly, too fast paced. It felt like once the mystery/thriller element of the story was introduced that we took off at light speed and the way this ends has me wondering if there is going to be a romance sub plot which I don't know that I want in this kind of story.

*Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book.

Yuki is a 32 year old woman facing the pressure of marriage due to an ill father and just society's push on her "advanced" age. Her fiance is a creep who is clearly using her for his own gain, and seeing her gain some autonomy throughout volume 1 is nice! At the end we are given a very large cliffhanger... I'm invested in the meantime at least. :)
