Having read a Colin Mardell book before, I was curious about his other work and picked on Abduction, the first in what appears to be a trilogy. The early parts of the book did feel a little heavy as there was a lot of scene-setting. There were also some long chapters, which is unusual these days. The risk here, of course, is that it could deter readers. Fortunately, I took the view that the background would be useful to know, and it certainly came across as the story progressed. Indeed, at times, there was a lot of action, fast-paced and often brutal and unforgiving. That’s fine by me, because I don’t think we should sugar-coat the impact of violence. Similarly, there are some issued covered that some people might feel warrant trigger warnings, especially as the conditions described felt very real. However, as the blurb tells us sex trafficking is involved, I think that’s warning enough. What was very good to see was the inclusion of a strong female protagonist. The ending of the book made it very clear that the story isn’t over, so it will be necessary to continue with the rest of the trilogy to reach a conclusion. I’m now looking forward to reading book 2 to find out what happens next.
