Give me a secret society filled with morally gray men, hidden agendas, dangerous secrets, and a dominant MMC with a quiet intensity, and you've already got my attention. And Behind the Suture certainly delivered!
Dom and Kate's story had everything I love about this kind of romance. The mystery, manipulation, suspense, emotional depth, and, of course, those deliciously spicy moments!
Dom was an incredibly compelling character. A brilliant pediatric surgeon carrying the guilt of losing his wife on his operating table, he was a man who had learned to function while silently falling apart. His reliance on morphine and his struggle to move beyond his grief added another layer to an already complex character.
And then there was Kate!
I absolutely love an FMC who can give as good as she gets, and Kate held her own. She entered Dom's world believing he was a monster, but instead of blindly accepting everything she'd been told, she started questioning the inconsistencies. Her strength wasn't just in how she stood up to Dom, but in her ability to think for herself, trust her instincts, and make difficult decisions.
What really made this story work for me was the manipulation woven throughout the plot. Two people with so much in common, brought together under circumstances that were anything but innocent. The deeper the truth went, the more everything started falling into place.
And Dom's emotional journey? So satisfying! Watching him gradually find his way out of the guilt and dependency that had consumed him, while building something meaningful with Kate, was one of my favourite parts of the story.
The pacing was excellent, the backstories were well established, and the character development felt natural. Nothing felt rushed or unnecessarily dragged out.
And let's not forget the spice! Dom's quiet dominance was EVERYTHING. He didn't need to be loud to command attention, and that intensity translated beautifully into their intimate moments.
I'm giving Behind the Suture 4.75 stars, not because anything was missing, but because the Grey Council series as a whole is a five-star experience for me.

Behind The Suture is book 4 in the Gray Council series and can be read as a standalone, but you really have to read the entire series understand that dynamics of what's happening.
I have to say, this one, by far, has to be my favorite in the series. Dom is everything, morally gray, but doing what's right, taking the lives of those who hurt innocent children and saving as many children as he can from being trafficked and having their organs harvested. Dom doesn't do it alone, he has all the members of the council with him in this journey, but I just feel like of all of them, he's so noble.
Kate was sent in to retrieve information about their operations and take the gray council down, but she gets confused about where she stands on everything once she gets to know Dom and realizes that he isn't the monster she was told he was. Once she learns she's been working for the wrong side, she tries to right her mistakes. But then she's taken and they break her. Not physically, but mentally. And Dom has the biggest struggle of his life trying to help her put the pieces of her mind back together.
This story was dark but I think that's mostly because Dom is the doctor and we get to see the darkness of what was really happening to those children. It was heartbreaking and I had no right to be sobbing the way I was. My heart ached for Kate as well. Because through her broken mind, she knew still she loved Dom because of the way he loved her, the way he stood by her, and helped her.
I absolutely love this entire series, but I don't know, this one just hit different and has a special place in my heart. I can't wait for the next story in the series, but this one will be stuck in my head for a while! Sable does an amazing job at writing addicting stories that keeps you transfixed with the plot. Behind the Suture (Gray Council #4) continues the gritty and intense storyline from the first three books. We get Dom’s story, which we have seen glimpses of in the other books. I went into this knowing that it would be heart breaking and super emotional and it truly was.
Our MMC Dom is a veteran who was a combat doctor in Afghanistan and is now a surgeon. He is the medical expert for the Gray Council and the one who always shows up to quickly and quietly patch them up in emergency situations. His own story after the military is one of loss and grief over the set up hit and run car accident that took his wife Adela. So his vendetta against villain David Kross is very personal.
We meet FMC Kate who has been manipulated and trained by the Syndicate and David Kross personally. She is also a doctor and her target is Dom. The lies and manipulation go very deep and Kross has her convinced that Dom and the Gray Council are evil and hurt children. Once meeting Dom, her instinct tells her that something is not right with everything that she’s been told about him and them.
The two have immediate chemistry and while he sees similarities in his wife in Kate, she sees glimpses of a true hero in Dom. There was a lot of talk about his wife which was a little uncomfy but it was important to their story and to him being able to accept love again and to love again himself.
This book gets very deep into the child trafficking aspect of the overarching storyline, so check the trigger warnings. It is dark and gritty and sad. But there is hope and love and an amazing found family which keeps expanding, as well. And holy crap we got a chapter at the end that belongs to someone unexpected. Can’t for book #5 which will be our mysterious and quirky hacker Abel’s story.

Kate is a strong kick ass woman who struggles with the voice in her head that is fighting against her in terms of what the truth is and who the real monster is.
Dom is a swoon worthy man who will have you falling fall him by just how he treats children who are in his care.
The tension between the two is undeniable, at work and outside of their work. The spicey scenes will have you sweating and needing water.

I was so excited for this book, I dropped everything for it. Kate's internal monologue was comical as she navigated her immediate attraction to Dom. I enjoyed her back and forth with determining if Dom really is the monster she set out to destroy, and Dom's toying with her, giving just enough to make her question everything. The way Dom is with children is totally swoon-worthy and makes you fall even more for him. And the exam scene was HOT and by far my favorite part — she was completely out of her element. A great game of cat and mouse where both thought they were the cat. With unbearable tension, high stakes suspense, and some extremely hot and steamy moments, this book leaves you questioning your sanity in the best way. Another great addition to the Gray Council series! A must read if you enjoy dark morally gray characters!.

The Gray Council book four follows Dom, who is a top trauma surgeon in Seattle and Kate, who is an ER doctor who’s volunteered to be a spy. But what she thinks is the truth, couldn’t be the furthest thing from it. And she may have just realized she’s working for the wrong team! It’s a dark romance with a great plot that even as a standalone in the series, connects with all of them for the larger picture. With suspense, danger, drama, and steam to reel you in from the first page! The chemistry between Dom and Kate is believable.

I have no words for how good this book was. Dom is an amazing character in this. A renowned surgeon doing what needs to be done. And Kate, being deceived by the council and being led to believe he’s murdering children for the organs. What she finds out is nothing but a lie. Her attraction to Dom has her stumbling all over. I laughed. This story held depth and drama. Steaminess was in abundance. But this was so well written. I can’t wait to continue the series.

Behind the Suture os the fourth book in The Grey Council by Sable Sinclair, and my first by this author. This is a fantastic read. I love the interaction between Dom and Kate. I hate the fact that I came in the middle of series. I will definitely be on the lookout for the first three books.
