Willem turned the key and opened the chest. Inside, he found a red-velvet lining supporting a charcoal colored, ovular-shaped object with raised bumps and about the size of his head.
“What’s this?” he asked.

I received a copy of this book for free for promotional purposes.

This was a solid start to a new fantasy series!

It follows a common story, a boy finds out he’s the chosen one and must embark on a quest to save his world.

I loved the quest aspect. Quests in fantasy books are one of my favorite things to read about. They are always so fun. This book set up the quest nicely.

As for the characters, Willem was a great young lead. For supporting characters, I especially loved Etheredore, the sprite. I also loved Gregor and Garland, a husband and wife duo who continuously helped out Willem.

Since this is the first book in the series, there was a lot of world building. At times there was a ton of information being dumped all at once. I would have liked to have seen it spaced out more to make it more digestible.

I’m not sure if this was intentional or not, but the 2 prologues came at the end of the book. They were really helpful in setting up the story so they should be read first.

Overall, I found this to be an intriguing first book and am curious to see where the rest of the series leads.

But when a family friend, a wizard, and four kings arrive bringing enchanted gifts of power, he is cast on a mission that will change his destiny forever. To save the magical realm of Terra Mirus from the Deceiver’s rising shadow, Willem must uncover the secrets of a forgotten prophecy, awaken a mythical dragon, and face the dark elf sent to hunt him down. In a world of dragons, elves, wizards, and ancient magic, courage is the greatest enchantment of all.

This was such a great start to a new fantasy series aimed at preteens! We get to know Willem, destined to be a hero. The story has so much happening in it. We meet all kinds of crazy and interesting characters as we follow Willem on this new quest. The world building made up a lot of this story due to it being the first book, but the author does a great job of easing us into it. The prologues are found at the end of the book, but I’d definitely read them before the rest of the story if you can! Kids will love this cast of characters! If you or your kiddo love fantasy, then check this one out!

I could see the comp titles above make sense as I was reading this one. My review does not reflect upon the cover, and I appreciate the author's disclaimer:("Book cover design created with the assistance of generative AI. No AI tools were used in the writing or editing of this book.")
Fast-paced, hero's journey with chosen one and classic elements. He is being hunted. This is a good vs. evil, high-stakes story of light and dark elves, goblins, and trolls whose blood is used to corrupt and mutate into super monsters, enhancing physical and magical attributes to an extreme. I like the detail of giving one of the bad guys a young daughter, she gives hope in some possible redemption to the dark side POVs. This is book one, a short and easy-to-read novel with a lot happening, featuring a big cast of Kings, allies, and enemies. Great to introduce readers to the genre.

This story is an imaginative take on the fantasy quest storyline with Willem being the young hero on a mission to save Terra Mirus. He encounters magical creatures ranging from a dragon he needs to awaken to sprites and elves, both light and dark, in a world with kings and gifts of power. This is a great book for middle-grade readers who enjoy Percy Jackson or Impossible Creatures.
