Definitely NOT a Thing

Rate this book
Smack in the middle of a cascade of unfortunate events, Amelia finds Calvin (derogatory)- cocky, annoying, too-often shirtless, and right next door (bummer).
Sparked by an unfortunate habit of inside thoughts not staying that way (she’s working on it!), their petty back-and-forth banter easily— and a little too quickly — slides into something neither of them shake.
Something.
But not like… a thing.
Definitely.

My girl Amelia is goin’ through it. She just broke up with her boyfriend of three years, she had to move out of her dream brownstone due to mold and, as if that weren’t enough, she’s moving into the same building as her ex. Queue the awkward run-ins. Men and relationships are the last thing on Amelia’s mind right now. She just wants to focus on herself and growing her business but, her annoying and sexy new neighbor is making that difficult to do. After doing the unthinkable, Calvin has been suspended indefinitely from the Brawlers for the rest of the season. His future with the team is undetermined at the moment so, he’s keeping himself busy with conditioning and practice drills. Calvin is a little bit of a night owl which, doesn’t bode well for Amelia. Between the constant sounds of weights dropping on the floor and the loud music past the building’s nine o’clock noise ordinance, she takes an instant dislike to her new neighbor. But, when a series of unforeseen circumstances keeps putting these two in each other’s spaces, Amelia realizes Calvin might not be such an azzhole at after all. I really enjoyed Definitely NOT a Thing. The witty back and forth banter between Amelia and Calvin was laugh out loud funny. They were killin’ it with the one liners. I love that these characters were able to build a solid friendship while denying their feelings for one another. Y’all know I love cameos. It was good catching up with Winnie. Somebody drop the sign-up sheet for the KANAOS class. I’m down to kick a ninja’s azz. Amelia fought the good fight but, she finally gave in and had to admit what she and Calvin had was definitely a thing.

I really enjoyed this one. I’m a sucker for the sarcasm and the back and forth witty banter. I was giggling and cheesing the whole way through. I’m hoping for a follow up book.

Amelia and Calvin were an actual hoot. Their bantering was vintage CCJ dialog which is a very cool vibe. I enjoyed their relationship that wasn't supposed to be a relationship. Hunter was a dweeb. I am glad Calvin was her new neighbor in this new Heights love story with a hilarious undertone.

Amelia and Calvin were soo funny and just right! Amelia and Calvin meet at the worst and best time. She is exiting a relationship and dealing with the emotions that come with it while trying to run her tech business (the drama with that app lol). Calvin is also in the midst of transition and learning that one decision (although warranted!) can cost you everything. These are so unexpected, but end up being the best things for each other. The banter between them is hilarious, and you will LOL for real, especially at some of their inner dialogue. This was such a fun read, and I wish we had gotten to spend more time with this couple. Maybe we will see more of them with this basketball team in a future series that CCJ keeps hinting at us! Definitely check out this book if you're looking for something light and enjoyable!

This book was so damn fun! The perfect mix of spice, laughs, and the kind of pettiness that makes you do a slow clap. CCJ really gave us a romcom that felt like a romcom without being corny or predictable.

In this one, we meet Amelia, who’s fresh out of a three-year relationship and ready to start her new life in a brownstone she thought she’d be moving into… only to find out it’s not ready. And where does she end up instead? In the same building as her trifling-ass ex. To make matters worse, there’s a nosy neighbor stirring the pot, and Amelia’s barely hanging on by a thread.

Enter Calvin — a pro basketball player on probation and praying his future isn’t going up in flames. Falling for a neighbor wasn’t on his radar, especially one with a sharp tongue and a don’t-bother-me attitude. But baby… Calvin is persistent. And funny. And fine. And lowkey petty in the best way.

The tension between Amelia and Calvin? Chef’s kiss. The banter was elite. Calvin being purposefully annoying had me giggling like I was on FaceTime with my homegirl. But what I really loved was how they balanced each other — the way they clowned and roasted but also held space for each other’s vulnerability. That “I got you” energy? Yeah, I was eating it UP.

Also… Amelia’s ex, Hunter? 🗑️. Calvin had him in his feelings without even trying, and I lived for it. A man who applies pressure and reads the room? Yes, please.

The audiobook performance was another win — Sharif and Wesleigh never miss, and this duet narration just made the story hit harder.

If you’re into:
• forced proximity
• spicy romcoms
• MMCs who hoop
• FMCs in tech

Then you need to add this one to your TBR. Amelia and Calvin might swear it was “Definitely NOT a Thing,” but that chemistry? That support? That heat? Baby, it was definitely everything.

This was such a good time. The back and forth banter between the two of them had me audibly cackling at times because they both played too much. But I loved the natural progression from neighbors to friends to “a thing that’s not really a thing but is totally a thing”🤣This was lighthearted, fast paced and just an overall fun rom-com.

Listen, it’s the nostalgia of the old Heights with new Heights characters. You can’t go wrong with that.

This is the perfect fall novella. Amelia is force to recalibrate due to unfortunate circumstances. And to be frank, she’s pissed about her predicament. Thankfully, she doesn’t rely on toxic positivity to get her through. My girl is calling out things she doesn’t like. She’s not pretending like everything is fine when it isn’t. And, I respect that.

In her moments of reflection, she tries to self regulate appropriately. When so many things are going against “the plan”, she braces herself for what could be next. It’s relatable. Life can be confusing with the inundation of good and bad things happening at the same time. While she wants nothing more than a moment of respite, fate has other plans.

When it comes to Calvin, she’s not in the mood for any friendly banter. But to put it bluntly, he doesn’t give a damn. Even while he’s going through his own turbulence, he can compartmentalize. His jovial personality really makes a difference. What they say, kiki you right out of your …👀you know the rest? Yea, mmmmhum lol. Also, he’s genuinely a kind person. This story will definitely have you cracking up every other page.

What can I even say about this book, other than the fact that I ate it right up?!? I absolutely loved Amelia and Calvin. The banter? BANTERING. The chemistry? IMMACULATE.

“You don’t have to be ready for anything - you just have to be real with yourself about what you’re feeling, and where you are.”

I was not expecting to see so much of myself in Amelia and her inner monologue, but if the shoe fits 😭. I love how she was able to navigate a series of unfortunate events, and not lose herself with the help of her people.

Calvin. Whew. I love him your honor. So unserious, but a complete gentleman. I would’ve folded so quickly if I was Amelia 🤣

Y’all already know I love me some CCJ! Her pen is unmatched, and I loved getting lost in her world again. If you are looking for your next rom-com, look no further! Available exclusively on ccjromance.com.

Y’all, if you’re looking for a couple who BANTERS, pick up Christina C. Jones’ latest, Definitley Not A Thing.

Our FMC Amelia is a bit down on her luck, having to move in the same apartment building as her newly recent ex. Calvin, our MMC, is a bit, but not totally, down on his luck too, on a forced sabbatical from his job. He’s Amelia’s new neighbor, and when the two meet sparks fly. Not in good way though, or is it?

To say I loved these two is an understatement. You often hear about good banter in romance novels, and your mileage may vary, but the banter was top notch here. The way these two talked to each other literally had me laughing at times.

This is a novella so it’s a quick read. That’s also why I’m over here begging for more 😂😂.

p.s. shoutout to Jeanie! She was ridiculous, hilarious, but ridiculous.

Definitely NOT a Thing was pure fun with just the right touch of heat. Amelia had me laughing with her unfiltered thoughts, and Calvin? The man is cocky, irritating, and also impossible not to like.

The banter between them was sharp and addictive, that kind of back-and-forth you can feel in your chest because you know it’s leading somewhere neither of them wants to admit. I loved how their connection built out of petty moments and side-eyes into something messy, sweet, and undeniable.

This story gave me the perfect mix of humor, tension, and romance that I didn’t want to put down. Amelia and Calvin might say it’s not a thing, but it definitely had me hooked.

I don’t mind a HFN but I feel like a little epilogue or something was needed. I don’t know where CCJ came up with a character like Amelia but that lady is funny af. The banter between them was so perfect. The way she handled the mean girls all of it was so good. New friends to lovers is gonna eat every time for me. But I just feel like the end was just a touch too abrupt. Otherwise this was a mood busting kinda story

Amelia and Calvin had beef from their very first encounter but all it took was a power outage to get them on the right page...sorta. I always think it’s funny how people tell you how they really feel about about your ex when you breakup. like, why didn’t you tell me all of that before!!?? I really enjoyed this story and I was sad that it ended before we get to see Calvin officially back on the team and Amelia cheering for him. I’d love a lil prologue at least lol

Loved this quick read! I think the tension and angst amongst the characters were what hooked me in from the beginning. I liked how they became friends after they were physical which made things less awkward. So good to see some of the Heights fam! CCJ continues to be a great writer and masters the art of storytelling that has you cheering on the characters.

CCJ is really one of the queens of writing a good ROM-COM and if there is an audiobook for it , you MUST listen.

This is a neighbor to lovers story, Amelia fresh off a break up moves into a new apartment building, when she runs into her neighbor Calvin who tried to lend a hand but she is not having it. her neighbor in turn being petty decides to get on her nerves, and the banter between them was so funny I was legit laughing out loud.

this is dual narration, which I love, if you love romcom, banter, you will love this. I loved how their relationship progressed to friends and then to lovers.

This story gave me RomCom vibes. I loved the easy vibe and banter between Calvin and Amelia. Amelia was a bit dramatic and an overthinker but I liked her character and Calvin was charming and funny. Together they made an adorable couple.

This is yet another hit by Mrs. Jones.

I wanted more 😩. Felt like we kind of got left hanging in the end. The banter between them was funny, but my mind was ready to dive into a sports romance when he got his job back. Will this be the last of them?

I enjoyed reading Calvin & Amelia's story. They are definitely a comical pair. I laughed throughout reading this book. My family was looking at me like I was crazy, cause I was LOL (laughing out loud)!

Besides Amelia & Calvin, Jeanie was comical too.

Awesome job, CCJ. Keep'em coming.

Someone’s lack of true commitment is going to always be another persons chance at true love. These two were easy, real and perfect for each other. These two back and forth was authentic and allowed them to be who they were. An update would be nice but it was perfect right were it ended.
