Argh, I was so frustrated reading this. You know when you absolutely love a Disney movie — say, The Lion King — and you watch it all the time, and then they release The Lion King 2, and you’re excited but secretly wondering why they bothered to ruin a good thing? Well, Half-Court Heat is The Lion King 2… if Simba and Nala were horny young adults trying to navigate long-distance, that is.
Seriously — there wasn’t much point to this. Half of the book is pure smut. Hot, sure, and I loved that in the first one because it served a purpose then. Here, it didn’t.
I honestly didn’t know what the plot was supposed to be. Lex was being a big baby — it’s been, what, one month since they went public with their relationship? And she’s already throwing tantrums about Eva’s obligations? Boo boo, your girlfriend is a millionaire and a busy professional! I felt like the angst was forced, and I couldn’t find any real “moral” or emotional takeaway. Was the point just “and they lived mostly-happily ever after but it was really difficult to get there”? That's just a bit depressing.
By 35%, I already felt like nothing was happening. Pages and pages of repetition — the players explaining that the new league is for a greater purpose, Lex whining about Eva not having time for her — rinse and repeat. And then later on, it really killed me how easily Lex was tempted by another woman, and how casually Eva hung out with her ex even though she knew it bothered Lex.
I’m giving it 3 stars purely because the writing is good, I still love Lex and Eva, I have a soft spot for a good sports romance, and — credit where it’s due — the sex scenes were great.
But I’m a bit pissed, I’ll be honest.
