I HAVE THE BEST WORDS: Poetry For Troubling Times

Rate this book
History didn’t rhyme—but this book does.

From the lies of the 2016 campaign to the chaos of January 6th, the COVID-19 catastrophe, the rise of MAGA militias, “Stop the Steal,” and even the absurd grifts of Trump Coin, Trump Bibles, and neon sneakers, I HAVE THE BEST WORDS captures the Trump era in biting, lyrical satire.

Through epic poems, sharp haikus, and haunting villanelles, SD Watson weaves a portrait of America’s strangest political saga. Each year unfolds with its own carnival of scandals—Sharpie hurricanes, bleach injections, Rudy Giuliani’s tragicomic fall, Fox News fawning, Elon Musk’s descent into political farce, and the cult-like fervor that transformed rallies into rituals.

More than parody, this collection is a warning. Beneath the laughter lies a sobering democracy remains fragile when lies become gospel and spectacle replaces governance. The Best Words is both a chronicle of absurdity and a cautionary tale for what may still lie ahead.

If you’ve ever laughed, groaned, or shaken your head at the surreal theater of American politics, this book will remind the story is still unfolding.

A clever, witty, humorous trip down memory lane, with a side of tragedy: tragicom might be the word for it. The poetry of SD Watson takes us from the beginning of the political era that began with the shocking election of 2016 nearly through present day. The Best Words is a poetic reminder of what we've exhaustingly been dealing with for some 10 years. There's been far too much to remember it all. The book's humor takes the edge off as it reminds us of many of the ludicrous (and heart wrenching) happenings we've lived through as well as some of the main villains. Read it and weep or read it and laugh, it's both. A masterpiece of topical poetry, rhyming verse with some haiku interspersed throughout. I look forward to better news in the sequel.
