Nightfall Guardians #2

The Gargoyle and the Lady

Rate this book
Can a monster save her from a monster?

Hannalinde is a lady no longer. Her father's treason stripped her of her home and title years ago, and the monster who hunts her at night has taken what little dignity she had left. Now, the half-gargoyle child growing inside her has made her situation urgent.

The goblin wars left Rikard a hero, but one with deep scars, ruined wings, and the inability to continue his line. His legacy is slipping through his fingers.

He requires a mate and an heir to keep his family's standing. She needs protection only a gargoyle husband can provide. The logical solution to both their problems? A marriage of convenience with the simplest terms: no bedding and no biting.

But the longer they share a home, the harder it is to pretend that it’s just an arrangement. She mends things in him the healers said were beyond repair. He gives her back pieces of herself she thought were gone for good. And the careful distance they agreed upon is disappearing fast.

However, the monster who hurt her is still out there. And the secrets holding their marriage together could be the same ones that tear it apart...

The Gargoyle & the Lady is a steamy high-fantasy monster romance with a grumpy, protective gargoyle hero, a marriage of convenience, and a guaranteed happily ever after. It’s the second standalone book in the Nightfall Guardians monster romance series about powerful gargoyle guardians who defend their mates against the world…at any cost.

Born into privilege but cast out of society when her father’s betrayal of the gargoyles results in his execution, Hannalinde has been scraping by on her skills as a seamstress all the while being terrorized by a nameless, vengeful gargoyle with whom she finds herself pregnant. When her best friend brings her to first an apothecary and then a working girl for help, she finds herself too far along to safely end the pregnancy and is instead urged to approach a different gargoyle for protection and a marriage in name only, to protect her and the baby.

War has left Rikard a shell of his former self, a guardian gargoyle whose wings were too badly damaged to allow him to fly, and his loins unable to produce the heir his lineage requires for succession. Moved by the quiet dignity with which Hannalinde approaches him to act has her protector and seeing the advantages of claiming the half gargoyle child she carries as his, Rikard readily agrees, and Hanna quickly wins over his parents as well. In short order, Rikard falls hard for Hanna as he watches her make the best of the situation, and she for him as he shows her tenderness and compassion, care and respect.

The baby’s birth father, however, remains a serious threat to their happiness, plaguing Hanna with their mate bond connection and a danger to their child.

Steamy, thoughtful, and well written, Sara Ivy Hill has crafted a beautiful love story between a human and an otherworldly creature.

This book was a brilliant example of how an author can allude to SA and v!olence against women without putting it all on the page. The reader can understand perfectly the gist of and ramifications of Hanna’s trauma without being subject to its details. The understanding and care Hanna receives from the apothecary, the prostitute, and the disgraced mason, as well as her best friend who was also born in privilege but has fallen short of society’s standards were beautiful examples of how women on the margins have always quietly held each other up in difficult times, usually at great risk to themselves.

I was fortunate to have received an advance reader copy from the author, and I’m sharing my honest and enthusiastic review.

Hannalinde has found herself stripped of everything she was given since birth. Her father has long since been killed for his treachery. She has lost her home, her title taken, her wealth removed, and she lives among the commoners working as a seamstress. Hanna carries a dark secret in the shape of a gargoyle who's name she doesn't know and who's face she's never seen. He claimed her without permission and takes whatever he wants, she's cant escape it. Rikard has worked as the Nadir overseeing complaints from people throughout the city. He settled into this position after being gravely injured in the battle that took lots of his friends and left him beyond repair in more ways than one. The same battle that left the gargoyles defenseless because of the actions of Hanna's father. Rikard is facing pressure to produce an heir to maintain his family's standing in the Tower. Unfortunately, that's one of the things that couldn't be fixed. Hanna's abuser takes zero caution and she finds herself with child and in desperate need of help. She needs protection, Rikard needs an heir. Add one meddling call girl into the mix and bam you've got the deal of the century.

Every deal comes with stipulations and this one is no different. No biting, no bedding, no feelings. Protection from her abuser in exchange for an heir he can pass as his own without anyone finding out his secret. Too bad neither of them actually want it to be that way. 🤷‍♀️

"In a world that had stolen so much from her, he wanted to be the reason for her happiness." The hurt/comfort going both ways was truly giving me life. Both of them have lost so much, had so much taken from them and then just left to wallow in the ruins of it all alone. Right from the beginning all Rikard wanted was to make her life easier because it was the least she deserved. He never wanted to pressure her or push her or make her do anything. The encouragement and the adoration was so sickly sweet and I couldn't get enough. He heals her mind, she heals his body, and together they blossom like her beloved rose garden. 🖤

I ate this up!

FMC was soft and feminine, yet strong. She and all the characters felt like real well rounded developed people. I'm equally invested in secondary characters and couples as in the MCs and eagerly await their books. FMC's best friend is so crazy but she's so fun and I can't wait to read a book about her because I'm sure she will be an FMC in a later book -

I loved how the romance started in practicality and mutual need and naturally developed into something deep and real.

I love how this book focused on real and deep issues (both MMC and FMC had traumas), but it was handled in a way that was not too heavy and left plenty of room for adorable moments in the romance and friendships.

I loved the healing experienced by the characters, and Rikard is just UGH I want one! So sweet. Also sexy and Touch Her and Die (VERY and JUSTIFIABLY Touch Her and Die).

Highest recommendation from me! Blends depth, trauma and healing with humor, supportive friendships, healthy family relationships, and the most adorable fluffy moments.

Note: I'm not usually one who pays attention to trigger warnings because I have none, but for this I would say to pay attention. There's off page SA and the resulting pregnancy is a core element of the plot. The characters all heal together and it's beautiful in a realistic way, but definitely something to be aware of if that's a trigger of yours.

This was a great gargoyle romance! Rickard and Hanna's romance begins as a desperate marriage of convenience but ends up as such a sweet and devoted relationship.

Hanna is in search of a protector and father for her unwanted child after being hunted and assaulted for years. Rickard is an injured gargoyle who needs a mate and an heir and is without the usual method of begetting one.

The start as slightly begrudging allies but they're both kind to each other, and that kindness grows to love.

This book touches on some dark topics, but only slightly - the focus on the book is Hanna and Rickard and they heal and grow together. I was concerned that there was going to be some late book angsty conflict, but thankfully not!

This book also has some top tier spice scenes - Sara Ivy Hill is so creative in developing the passionate relationship between Hanna and Rickard while dealing when Hanna's trauma and Rickard's injuries. It makes for some unique romance scenes that take advantage of gargoyle anatomy. Love it!

I love this series so much, and I think this one has become my favorite!

Hanna was trying her best to survive day to day, and when she found a chance to get protection from her tormentor she jumped at it. And I don't blame her. Even though we don't see the SA on page, you can almost feel her suffering from her trauma. Rikard was so patient and did what he could to support her and give her space to grow her trust even when their marriage was still just one of convenience.

Their relationship slowly grew, and I loved seeing those small moments turn into more. I'm not going to spoil the details of the spice scenes but let me just stay HOT HOT HOT. Sara Ivy Hill knew what she was doing 🤭

There are several plot twists that I didn't see coming. There's one that I kind of wish didn't happen, but it didn't change how much I loved this book and these characters.

I’m telling you that this series by Sara Ivy Hill has become one of my comfort series. Her writing style is just so easy to ingest and I adore her characters.
And this book was no different.
Hanna and Rickard each have their own problems and trauma they must grow through so it was so easy to root for them.
I adored this story and kinda wish I would have kept going.

Plot: 4.5/5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️/5
Readability: 5/5

Thank you Sara for gifting me an eARC of this. I will treasure it forever (or at least until I can get my hands on a physical/trophy copy) 🫶🏻

What an absolutely beautiful story! My heart could barely handle all the emotions this story evoked!
Both Hannalinde and Rikard have lived through absolute hell and when Hanna has no one else to turn to for help, she proposes a marriage contract between them in exchange for his protection. Despite the desperation behind their agreement, they respect and hold space for each other and their growing connection allows them both to heal mentally and physically.
A slow burn to scorching hot read, this story is full of courage, sacrifice and deep love. Another phenomenal addition to the series!
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A bargain in stone becomes something neither of them expected.

Hannalinde has lost her title, her home, and the life she was raised to inherit. When a terrifying threat leaves her desperate, she turns to the one protection strong enough to shield her: a gargoyle husband with power, scars, and burdens of his own.

Rikard needs an heir, not love. His ruined wings and slipping legacy leave him guarded and sure his best days are behind him. A marriage of convenience should solve everything, especially with clear boundaries and no expectation of more.

But sharing a home changes the bargain. Hanna's quiet courage begins to mend pieces of Rikard no one believes can heal, while his patience helps her reclaim parts of herself fear has stolen. Trust grows one careful step at a time until neither can pretend this is only an arrangement.

The danger around them never fully disappears, and the secrets beneath their marriage threaten the future they're building. Yet protection becomes devotion, and survival becomes a love strong enough to change both their lives.

Hanna moves from fear and survival into a woman who trusts her desires and builds a future rooted in love. Rikard begins convinced his injuries have diminished his worth, but Hanna helps him rediscover hope, vulnerability, and family. Together they build a relationship grounded in safety, care, and choosing each other.

An ultra-steamy gargoyle romance with a marriage of convenience, grumpy protector hero, trauma healing, forced proximity, mutual caretaking, and a bond built on trust. It explores survival, shame, identity, consent, family, sacrifice, restoration, and the courage to be vulnerable after profound hurt. It’s about a woman reclaiming herself, a man learning he was never beyond saving, and two wounded souls becoming the safe place the other never thought they’d find.

The Elevator Pitch: A disgraced noblewoman carrying a dangerous secret enters a marriage of convenience with a scarred gargoyle who believes his future is already lost. As trust slowly replaces fear, they begin restoring pieces of each other that neither thought could ever be reclaimed. But with old wounds, buried truths, and a relentless threat closing in, they must decide whether love is worth risking everything they've rebuilt.

Heat Level: 🔥🔥🔥 Ultra-Steamy / Erotic Romance

🖤 “In a world that had stolen so much from her, he wanted to be the reason for her happiness.”
~~~
Hannalinde is an incredible woman! Her life hasn’t been easy for years - stripped of her title and home, and enduring unimaginable horrors. But even when dealing with all the trauma, Hanna shows such remarkable resilience and courage. Even more, despite all the hardships thrown her way, she remains kind, caring and compassionate. Hannalinde is amazing and I loved her so, so much!
Rikard is a war hero who now works as the Nadir - overseeing and managing complaints from people throughout the town. He’s powerful and respected, but the war has left him bitter and broken in more ways than one. But there’s more to this gargoyle than meets the eye. Because underneath his scarred facade, is an honorable, thoughtful, caring, generous and fiercely protective male. Rikard is absolutely incredible and I couldn’t help but adore every single thing about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Hannalinde and Rikard! Pregnant with a half-gargoyle child, Hanna needs protection. And Rikard needs an heir, which he’s unable to produce. So, they come to an agreement - a marriage of convenience to solve both of their problems. But what starts with a simple arrangement, becomes something so much more…
I loved Rikard and Hanna together! Every moment they spent in each other’s company was so lovely. And I loved how understanding and supportive they were of one another. Even more, I loved how Rikard helped Hanna re-claim parts of herself she thought were lost. And, on the other hand, the lovely human helped the broken gargoyle heal what he thought could never be healed. They truly became each other’s safe space. Both Hanna and Rikard have been through hell, and both were broken in their own way. But their shattered pieces fit so perfectly together and I was so happy those two scarred souls found happiness, acceptance and love together! (Psst… the passionate moments Hanna and Rikard shared were pretty hot, too… And very creative!)
Overall, The Gargoyle and the Lady is an emotional and heartfelt story and another remarkable addition to the series.
I couldn’t put it down and absolutely loved every single page of it!
This is book two of the Nightfall Guardian Series and Sara delivers a story that had me turning pages, wanting to see how it ends but not wanting it to end at the same time.
Again this is more than a high fantasy romance, we continue in the world of Solvantis where there remains a deep-seated prejudice between humans/gargoyles and within gargoyle society. But now we focus more on the aftermath of war, betrayal and the healing that can occur when love is nurtured and allowed to grow.
Sara portrayed Hannalinde experience and lasting trauma without it being explicitly detailed on the page. Instead the focus was shifted to the care she received from the woman in her lives. These are women who, themselves, were on the outside of society but offered support however they could.
Throughout the story, roses come up, some rescued and tended to daily and others forgotten but waiting to bloom again. It reflected the characters' shared journey, making something beautiful out of something damaged. The shared journey of healing physically and mentally between Hanna and Rikard.
Rikard didn't allow himself much outside his duties before he met Hanna. So I really enjoyed the levity and depravity 🤭 that Pudding brought to Rikard's life. Pudding is partially responsible for some very spicy scenes.
I would read an entire novel all from the POV of those gossiping little Moths that haunt the shadows. They stir up rumours, also provide a little truth and even a laugh or two.
If you love complex, emotionally charged journeys then Hannalinde and Rikard's story is for you. It was one of the most rewarding character arcs I have ever read.
And you know your limits, so read the author's content warnings.
Thank you Sara Ivy Hill for this ARC. I received an advanced reader copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I absolutely love how Rikard and Hanna’s healing journey was handled. As a reader, I had to find the courage to face the book's trigger warnings, but Sara was incredibly kind to her readers. The traumatic and dark memories were written in such a way that I feel cradled into a soft landing, rather than being hit with a harsh, slap-in-the-face "face your fear" moment. Even the way Sara handled the end of the tormentor was perfection. It was with justice, quick, clean, and completely fuss-free—just deeply, deeply satisfying.😌
Rikard and Hanna's story was my perfect companion on warm summer nights after a long day at work. The emotional payoff was everything I wanted and more. When the slow burn finally catches fire between them, it delivers on every level. Once the bond was formed there was no pulling back, every step of their healing felt completely earned. And those intimate moments between them? Slow and sexy😉.
Ending the book with a beautiful happily-ever-after—plus some intriguing hints about the upcoming books in the series—makes this an unforgettable read and a world I can't wait to return to.
P.S. I would love to see artwork of Hanna's work on Rikard's tattered wings! And her wedding dress🤩
Hannalinde was once a lady but no more, she loses her home, her title, her friends turn against her all because of what her father did.
Rikard a gargoyle who is scarred from war, crosses paths with Hannalinde, when she comes to him because she’s been terrorised by a Gargoyle who won’t leave her alone.
They make a deal that they will marry, she carries a child and he is in need of an heir, she will pretend to be his mate. He offers something she hadn’t felt in a while safety. Rikard is broken from the war, he carries physical scars that can never be fixed especially his wings.
As time goes on he wants a true mate bond with Hannalinde, she makes him happy and he wants to be the one to put a smile back on her face after all she has been through. They heal other, body and soul and for the first time in a long time she gets to choose who she wants 💕
This was such a beautiful written story about healing, yearning, finding love that you think you don’t deserve. I’ve read a lot of Gargoyle romance and this has become one of my favourites from the moment Hannalinde and Rikard met all I wanted was for them to have their HEA after all they went through 💕💕
Rikar and Hanna will capture your heart! Neither is looking for love; they enter into a marriage of convenience to give Hanna protection from a dangerous, unknown gargoyle and an heir for Rikar. Their story is an incredibly beautiful, slow-burn journey of two broken people finally finding where they truly belong—with each other.
The story handles some darker themes and trauma, but it is done with great care and tenderness. It never feels too heavy or grim but adds emotional weight, which makes their eventual healing and devotion feel genuine and earned. I loved how they worked together to find ways to share intimacy with trust and consent.
Their growth together will put you through the emotional wringer, from grief to happiness, in the best way possible. If you are looking for a romance where two people heal from deep trauma and find the strength and courage to be vulnerable to a real connection, you absolutely need to add this to your TBR.
This was such a great follow-up to book one and I loved seeing Hannalinde and Rikard find they were more to each other than they expected. She's lost her title due to her father's actions and has found herself pregnant with no recourse but to have the baby. She needs a protector, and Rikard, damaged from the war, was the perfect choice for her. He can't fly and can't father the heir he needs... However, things are complicated by the baby-daddy who threatens their mate bond. The author did a fab job with implying SA and other dark themes without going into clear detail. I was hooked on this story, beginning to end, with the trauma, healing, how he fell hard and fast for her, the spice and the strong love between them as they journeyed to a wonderful HEA. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book :D
An incredible story of healing both of the flesh and of the heart. I could not put it down when I started and read it in one sitting I have just completed it and it is 2:05 am (I made a coffee to ensure I stayed up to finish it!). It has some dark themes that some may find off-putting but I found it was done tastefully and with care and was not too much at all. Hannalinde and Rikard immediately became my favourite Gargoyle/Human pairing with this story. I fully recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a new fantasy romance novel that will tug at your heart and make you feel grief and happiness in equal measure. Like a rose this story has beauty paired with thorns and pain but it makes the beauty more precious.
The Gargoyle & the Lady is the second book in the Nightfall Guardians series by Sara Ivy Hill. I was so excited when I learned that Rikard’s story was next and I fell so deeply in love with their story.
Hanna and Rikard really went through unimaginable hell but they found themselves in need of each other. Hannah needs a protector and Rikard needs an heir. Together they develop a marriage contract that is only supposed to be in name but they never expected to fall deeply in love. Their love was not instant but was grown through care and communication.
Fair warning this book does have some darker topics but the story mainly focuses on both characters healing from their own traumas together. Let me tell you I found myself shedding some tears because I found it to be beautifully written.
I find that they are my favorite couple so far but the next book might dethrone them. 🤭
You will enjoy this book if you like the following:
- Scarred hero
- She’s pregnant
- Marriage of convenience
- Mutual healing
- Pining
- Knotting and tail stuff
- Revenge
Thank you so much Sara Ivy Hill for the gifted copy!
“Life without you is like the gardens were when the house was abandoned,” he barreled on, his heart flayed open and defiant. “Thorns without roses. I have lived in that garden, Hannalinde. I can’t do it again.
This book was so sweet. Our poor Rikard is so broken, inside and out. Hannalinde has so many scars inside (check trigger warnings if you have them. Nothing is on page but it is the premise is the story of her life after this happens). Rikard and Hannalinde are perfect for each other as they feel their way through their relationship. It was most definitely a slow burn ❤️‍🔥 but so with it in the end. Highly recommend this book!
This book was wonderful. It treated such a delicate subject with a level of respect and care that truly allowed me to enjoy the book. It was a story of true love, a love that accepts, nurtures, heals, and protects. It was a very beautiful story. If you want to read a story with angst that also shows you the healing power of true love, this is the book for you. It was heartbreaking in certain aspects, raw you could say. The feeling of helplessness that the FMC suffered was so real, and what saddens me is that millions of women live with that all the time. I pray every day for those women to find justice and peace
This was my favorite of the series so far, and I very much enjoyed the couple in this story, Hanna and Rikar. Their characters and romance are written thoughtfully, with Ivy Hill's trademark spice and well-developed world building. Some darker themes here - definitely check the triggers before jumping in. A solid 3.5 ⭐️ for me!
Big thank you to the author for an advanced copy of this book! This is my honest review.
Sara did it again, I cried. This was such a heartfelt, emotional read that was filled with so much depth and beauty. It captured everything I love about monster romance: found family, tender hurt / comfort moments, and the reminder that what some may see as a flaw or disability doesn't diminish someone's worth or beauty. It was a touching story about acceptance, love, and seeing someone for who they truly are.
- Disabled hero
- Pregnancy
- Hurt / comfort
- Tail play
- Found family
