Like a woman named Lucky Fortune who has lived her whole life plagued by one mishap and misfortune after another. The catastrophes that regularly derail her life would crush a normal person, but Lucky is stubbornly resilient.

First off, this cover is gorgeous! Anyways, Lucky not so lucky and Risky are sweet together. He has a bad boy past but is starting over and will do anything for her. She feels like it's her bad luck that the people in her life are crappy and she's kinda clumsy. I like the suspense element, too, along with some mystery. It was an entertaining story.
Love this book title and the FMC and MMC names - love it!!
I love that Jay always deliver an exceptional storyline and one that is never repeated or similar to previous (and she has ALOT of books). There are some great cameos in here (for those who have never read Jay before - it won't hurt the flow of the story at all, but you may want find yourself wanting to read their stories).
Ms. Fortune is full of twists and turns and keeps readers turning the pages. The chemistry between Lucky and Risky was spot on and blended in well with the overall story.
I was planning to read this one later because i just finished another serie by this author. But i needed something quick and this book is kinda short. I was into it at first but quickly i felt ZERO chemistry between the 2 characters ... And if i'm being honest i think that the writing made it worse. I read a looot of book by JC because i'm a fan but she tend to be wordy in parts were the feelings needs to be felt and not described to death (or just told) and here i felt like i missed all the attraction because out of the blue she's attracted to a guy described like an happy go lucky guy, not very good at what he does. I didn't see the "golden retriever", the guy felt like any other of her heroes just maybe less "intense". The relentlesness of the "bad luck" made also the story a bit bleak at one point and almost made me want to stop. Lucky's behavior at times was off putting and she looked like a pushover... And the link with other books here kinda pissed me off but that's personnal lol I thought we were through with the second generation but apparently not ^^ Overall i liked the idea, i even liked Risky despite the lack of chemistry and the concept of the book but it was largely smothered by the lack of chemistry and an heroine i didn't feel anything positive about.
Aaaahhhhh!!! This might be my favorite book to come from @jay.crownover ! And that is saying a lot because she has yet to write a book I didn’t love!!!
I was so Fortunate to receive an ARC of Ms. Fortune! But it can be yours starting Tuesday March 18, 2025!
First of all, the names of the FMC and MMC were the absolute best!! The whole book I was rooting for a Lucky Risk to occur. That’s all I will say!
The FMC is a fierce black Ally Cat that actually desperately wants to be a domestic house cat. But like a typical cat…. They need no one but secretly want o be cared for. She has a lot of history, damage baggage to over come and cope with. I really enjoyed her story!
The MMC is definitely a big dog! Lovable and protective!
I loved all the cameos!!! Loathed Charley since Son of a Gun, but honestly, I want her story now! I love when characters from all over the ‘Crownoverse’ come out to play!
This book is like Jason Bourne and The Bodyguard had a baby!
This is a must read!!! The suspense and who dun it kept me guessing until the final reveal!
Favorite Quote: He shook his head, and his voice was low and rough with anger when he asked, “What do you mean, nothing’s left? You’re here.”
Another 5 star read for Jay!!! Go get this book!!!!!
http://www.unbrindelecture.com/2025/0... Tentez votre chance ! A little disappointed not to have fallen in love with this read but it remains a well-written suspense romance in a superb mountain setting and a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Lucky has everything it takes to appeal to the widest possible audience, but my heart didn't beat for Risky. Give it a try!
Every one of us has a little of Lucky Fortune in us. Every one of us deserves a Declan Risk “Risky” in our lives. Lucky has lived her life surrounded by unluckiness and misfortune. Only her grandparents give her unconditional love and support. Upon their death’s they leave lucky their equal pride and joy, their mountainside resort. Lucky always knew that’s where she wanted to be in life. Funny how she needs a handyman and here enters Risky. Through new misfortunes and mishaps Lucky learns that possibly letting Risky in, in more ways than one, will be life changing. She didn’t realize it could be life ending.
Reading this full circle story had my mind going in many directions. Who knew it would end on an unexpected healing journey for many of the characters. Can we talk about past book people showing up here? Be on the lookout. If you love every Jay story, you will be as satisfied. I know you’ll be loving Lucky and Risky as much as I do. You too will be imagining more books of these two, spinoffs, and any direction we can get our hands on.
Once again Jay Crownover has opened us up to a new direction of her writing. Just as amazing as every other story she’s told thus far.
Jay Crownover's clever and intriguing writing makes Ms. Fortune a marvelously unforgettable read!
Lucky Fortune had spent her entire life trying to live up to her name only to epically be disappointed. This woman could not catch a break yet fought through her adversity, never backing down from a challenge and never losing her core goodness. Lucky's ability to take on obstacles aimed at not only taking her dreams down but on multiple occasions putting her life in peril making her a compelling character.
Declan "RIsky" Risk initially came off as a gorgeous bumbling but enthusiastic handyman but there was a lot more to him than met the eye. Careful and caring there was a deadly undercurrent to Risky that ultimately he could not hide and added a wonderful layer to him rapidly increasing reader's interest level in him in a couple of chapters. Risky proved to be an enigma with his seeming lack of skills contrasting with his ability to fix things when needed.
Little by little Ms. Crownover showed that looks can be deceiving revealing a bunch of converging dark agendas that proved to be the perfect catalyst to bring Lucky and Risky together. This pair's dynamic not only showcased their simmering chemistry but their mutual yearning for a love that had always been elusive to them. Lucky and RIsky's strength and loyalty to each other complimented their relationship reinforcing their attraction.
One of the things that stood out in this story was the fabulous names of the characters. Tongue in cheek but perfectly suited to everyone involved, they made this work fun as well as foreshadowing her character's roles. Suspense clung to every aspect of this book leading this romance to lots of threatening ups and downs for some heart racing and questioning moments. New leases on life and unconditional love were the happy results of all the drama that ensued in this work.
Jay Crownover loves a good underdog. This author's works are beautifully plotted drawing her audience in from start to finish. Getting lost in Jay Crownover's Ms.Fortune may be the highlight of this year's book releases for an edge of your seat adventure with a dash of romance to top it off!
*I was given an advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own.*
Lucky is not so lucky. Her parents suck, her grandparents-the ones that truly loved her-have passed away, and the lodge that had been left to her is on its last legs. She loves the lodge. Her grandpa built it. She wants to keep it going, but it’s hard to do. Her parents want her to sell it so they can take the money.
Risky is mysterious and doesn’t divulge much about himself. He is good and fixing things and helps out lucky a lot.
Both characters were likable. There is trouble going on throughout the story and you are trying to figure out who is causing all these problems.
Lucky gets screwed over a lot in this book. As the reader, you feel really bad for her. I’m glad Risky could help turn things around for her (even though his past was sometimes the problem).
Jay continues to give us not only unique plots, but the title of this book is PERFECT!
This book had me absolutely guessing at every new plot point, and had me on the edge of my seat. I could not put this book down. Lucky and Risky have great chemistry, and I really loved how their relationship grew, especially with how both of their previous relationships went down.
I really enjoyed seeing some of Jay’s previous characters make appearances, they were such a treat.
Jay Crownover did it again, she brought us a unique story like the ones she does. With a plot that didn't know where the blow was going to come from. Lucky for me would be my favorite friend, to whom I would sometimes like to yell that she is too good for this world but we all need a Lucky in our lives and a Risky too.
Risky was all i expected from a Miss Jay book, i love how he gave lucky everything she wanted and more..
A fun, exciting story with a romance that makes you sigh.
Thank you very much for sending me the Arc. I admit that I screamed with excitement when I got the email...
Ps: Miss Jay, I would love a book by Charley Booker
I have been reading Ms. Crownover's books ever since Rule came out. I must say, Ms. Fortune was a gripping story that I just loved. The location, the characters, and the storyline that flowed were great. I liked visiting old friends from previous stories.
I received this book as an ARC and once I started I couldn’t stop and put it down! It’s been a while since I read what I consider a really good book and I’m glad I read this one. From the brief description of the book it didn’t seem like much but once I started it quickly grabbed my attention. I loved lucky and risky. Their backgrounds and how they came together but mostly how he truly understands her and dominates her while also equally giving her power was what really made me love the characters. I feel like many books have the typical dominate bad boy but this was that with a twist in his personality that stood out and made the story better. I personally would of loved if the book was both POVs of the main characters and we saw Risky trying to break away from his previous bad boy life more but I’ll settle for a book 2 ;) thank you Jay for a refreshing and intriguing story!
I had the privilege to get an ARC of this book and let me tell you, that was one hell of a rollercoaster! It was different from the other Jay Crownover books I read in the past, but I was intrigued right away by Lucky and her mysterious handyman and it was a real pleasure to see their story unfold. I loved how the two characters were so different and yet so endearing all the same. The entire book was a real page turner and once I was started I just couldn’t put it down, the twists kept on coming with Lucky’s legendary misfortune. 4.5 stars for me, it was definitely a great read!
I was part of the ARC on this book! And I cant be anymore in aww. This book had twist and turns in it. I have loved reading this authors stuff since her very first book. But, I absolutely fell in love with these characters and didn’t want the book to end!! Hands down one of my favorites!!! Must read!!
Told primarily in the FMC's POV (the MMC has one chapter at the end), I felt this read more like a mystery/suspense novel with a side of romance. I liked the characters and their back story. I really liked the mystery. I just felt the romance a little superficial. Maybe because we don’t get to see the MMC’s POV. While I would recommend this book, I would not listed it in my favorites list.
I received a free copy from the author. This is my unbiased review.
Lucky's life is quite opposite of what her name suggests, or at least that's her perception. Then she picks up a hitchhiker and offers him a job as a handyman, and that bad luck seems to reverse itself. Risky seems not to actually have the skills to be a handyman, but there's something about the man that has her keep him employed. And when things spin out of control, she'll end up being doubly happy she keeps him around...
Risky got out of the life and has come to this small town to start over. That he finds that renewal with Lucky is apropos because she gives him a new lease on life. Now he just has to keep her safe and get her to change her perception of herself. Both those things might be harder than he realizes though.
Black cat/golden retriever is quickly becoming one of my favorite tropes. But there's something seriously extra about Lucky and Risky that takes this trope and turns it on its head. Both are not really how they perceive themselves, especially Lucky, and just needed the perfect partner to help them realize this. Yes she's seemingly cold and distant at a glance, but beneath that facade she's kind and compassionate, when she really shouldn't have been, considering how horribly life had treated her. Risky comes across as sort of a bumbling, easy going guy, but beyond that image he's got secrets and a past that Lucky had no idea of. Anti-hero, yes, but so much more than he gave himself credit for. I've read a few stories by this author and have liked them all, this one, though, I love. Lucky and Risky's journey is suspenseful, more than a touch steamy, out of the box, and has the most unlikely, but perfect for each other, couple.
ARC provided by Wordsmith Publicity for an honest review.
Jay Crownover has offered up one thrilling, albeit heartwarming adventure with Ms. Fortune. A very unusual tale of one Lucky Fortune and her ongoing efforts to refurbish and ultimately save her grandparents' mountain lodge. What starts out as mere bouts of her usual bad luck takes a very serious turn as many of the mishaps she experiences could have deadly results. And if trying her hardest to not be the constant source of gossip in the small town of Blue River wasn't tiring enough, her once hardened heart is now fluttering back to life when the mysterious Declan Risk ("Risky") becomes more than just her seemingly hapless handyman giving Lucky even more to handle. But with the unique style of storytelling that only Jay Crownover can deliver, I was taken on one wicked good ride, still clamoring for more even as I closed my e-reader.
What's once again wonderful about this talented author's words is how you simply do not know what might happen next. Sure there are some clues as to the incidents that plague Lucky and I surprised myself with figuring out one culprit responsible, but the tangled web that Risky seems to have brought with him to the mountain truly threw me for a loop, especially in the last 25% or so of the book. With Lucky trying hard just to navigate her attraction to Risky, dealing with her deadbeat parents and having a despondent best friend suddenly on her doorstep, I'm still amazed she kept her cool as well as she did.
Lucky is a great character and I loved her drive. Her willingness to always help others and even her constant thinking she was always the cause of everything bad that happened to her. Thank goodness Risky, who is full of his own regrets, secrets and ongoing turmoil, was there to finally point out that this beautiful woman, inside and out, was not always at fault. Watching Lucky emerge as the kick-arse soul she was always meant to be, and come to life with Risky forever at her back, was incredible for me. I loved when she took charge of her life, even after the horrific consequences that destroyed what she cherished most in this world, and showed those who continued to take advantage of her, just who was now boss.
Ms. Fortune was thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. There are great supporting characters, some who need to kick rocks, and a newfound love for Lucky and Risky that is the ultimate gift for these two survivors who will be forever grateful they found each other. With a neat little cameo from one of my recent fave characters of Crownover's, I truly am hopeful we might get more from this world and further explore Risky's past and those who influenced him, both good and bad.
I am always confident we'll never get the same story twice from this amazing wordsmith and with Ms. Fortune, I am thrilled to say that Jay Crownover has once again proven me right. This book is full of twists and turns, has the right amount of steam and passion, and in the end, is simply a really great read. Give it a go. I know you'll fall hard for the story of a woman whose misfortune changes in the form of a man who may just be the luckiest one of all.
Lucky Fortune is anything but fortunate. Her mere existence has caused problems from the beginning and it’s been a string of unfortunate circumstances ever since. Now she’s back in Blue Ridge trying to get her grandparents' ski lodge back open after an absence. And things aren’t going as smoothly as she’d like. Now there’s a lot more happening than just her little klutzy accidents or storms, and she’s dealing with actual threats.
Good thing her handyman who’s not so handy seems to be very well-versed in personal protection. Declan Risk was a hitchhiker who just stayed and has been doing maintenance jobs for her. He doesn’t seem to have much experience in the handyman department, but his other skills are now coming in quite handy in trying to help keep her safe.
I wasn’t sure what I was expecting with this one, but I definitely got more than I bargained for. Lucky‘s unfortunate and bad things seem to happen around her. Risky tries to make her understand that she also takes the blame for a lot of things because she was conditioned that way. She thinks she is cold-hearted and has defenses up, but she is also kind and empathetic.
Risky comes off as easy going, but he is also very smart, analytical, and protective, and will do anything he needs to to make sure that Lucky is safe. And he has some aces up his sleeve and some dark characters who can provide favors, and I enjoyed seeing some of the cameos from Jay’s other series.
This one had a lot of antagonists, threats, suspense, twists, and action mixed in with a spicy romance. I actually found myself feeling bad for Lucky a lot because it seemed like no matter how she tried, she always ended up in the middle of things. But she also had opportunities to grow by letting down her walls and being shown what real love and care can be.
I loved Risky. He’s this big, burly, tough guy, anti-hero who has come through dark situations but still has a shaky moral compass and will do anything he has to for those he cares about. She's a black cat and he is a golden retriever who will bark and bite if needed. They challenge each other and inspire passion. They are imperfect but perfectly matched, and they might’ve been the only people that could truly handle the other one.
"Don't let anyone take what belongs to you, Lucky."
This book is fooling you!!! I mean, you are expecting a small town romance filled with a touch of drama and you are getting so much more than what you were expecting!!! Yes, this book was kind of a small town romance, but our heroine was anything but a damsel in distress, even though the unluckiness of this girl wasn't even funny!!! She inherited a ski lodge in the mountains and everyone is against her!!! And not only in words, but in actions as well!!! Her only companioship in this difficult journey of hers was a beautiful stranger, the worst handyman that had ever existed!!! LOL!!! But he is also the only one who is standing by her side in every mishap that is happening along this journey!!!
"I don't have it in me to be the center of someone's world. I struggle to keep my own planet spinning."
Honestly, I don't know what more to say about this story!!! Lucky Fortune, (yes, you heard that right!), had the worst luck in the world and not only that, but she has enemies... deadly ones... who are after her and her inheritance!!! Someone wants her to failure at reopening the lodge, but this girl is determined to let no one stops her for what she really wants!!! And I admired her for that, cause even though when she was battered and broken, she still kept her dream alive and her determination untouched!!!
"Fighting a battle with an invisible enemy was exhausting."
Risky was a man of many secrets!!! He was also a handyman who had no idea what to do with his hands!!! LOL But he was a quick learner and his new boss was an adorable nightmare!!! He was fiercely protective of her and he would do anything to not let the lodge to get into the wrong hands... I loved Risky and Lucky together!!! They were perfect, even though their adventure was anything than perfect!!!
"He was my very own lucky charm."
I enjoyed this ride very much!!! I am always enjoying Jay's stories!!! Even though they sound simple from only reading the blurb, I am getting so much more than I had imagined and I loved how she is making me feel while reading her books!!! Lucky and Risky were memorable and their story was giving me a heartburn!!! Just pick up this book and you will get a beautiful, adventurous and very suspenseful ride!!!
"Remarkable things often rise from the ashes."
**I received an ARc for the exchange of an honest review**
There are so many things that I would like to say about Ms. Fortune, so I’ll start with only a couple. 1. I absolutely loved the story. 2. Lucky is my hero 3. Risky is the perfect bite-y golden retriever (in my opinion) I was so excited when I heard that Jay was coming out with a new book when I tell you that I did a little dance and scared the crap out of my roommates. Lol. And honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading Ms. Fortune 🔮, but I love every bit of the story. The plot, the characters, and the setting were just amazing. It was a fun book to sink into. Like all of Jay’s books, it felt like a movie was playing in my head. Lucky was such a fun character, she was a black cat character through and through, and I loved it. She had so much to deal with and I couldn’t help but feel for her, though I do love that she didn’t give up easily when things go rough. And boy did they get rough, Lucky has bad luck. The worst luck honestly, there were moments where I couldn’t help but laugh at the luck she had. But again, she didn’t give up. Lucky is a strong woman and does everything that she can to keep her grandparents' legacy alive, she’s doing her best. Then there’s Risky, ah, sweet, beautiful, rugged man. He was honestly my second favorite character, next to Lucky. He’s the worst handyman ever, there were moments where I couldn’t help but laugh. He comes from a past that I have to say surprised me just a tiny bit, though I had an idea. I loved how Risky stood up for Lucky and was there to help her through the tough times that she was going through, he also got exposed to her bad luck. But the two of them worked. I loved their relationship. It was a bit of a slow burn, but like in true Jay Crownover fashion it burned bright and hot. And I loved it. I loved all the cameos, one of them had me kicking my feet and giggling while another caught me by surprised. Again, I had an idea who was connected to Risky’s past but boy did it take a turn. But it was great to see these characters appear. In my opinion Ms. Fortune 🔮 was a five-star read for me, not just because Jay is one of my favorite authors but because I truly enjoy her work and this book was just sparkles ✨ for me anyway. Happy Readings!
Ms Fortune by Jay Crownover is a standalone romantic suspense between Lucky Fortune and Declan Risk aka Risky. A fantastic plot with so many twists and turns in this unique story.
Positive her parents cursed her by calling her Lucky!! Everything she touches goes wrong and misfortune follows her. All she wants to do is make her grandparents proud so she’s working hard renovating their mountain lodge and trying to make it successful again. One night she gave a hitchhiker a lift and he has stayed on as her handyman. Risky isn’t a very good one but he’s very easy on the eyes!
The story starts with Lucky having one of those days. Bad weather caused the power to go out. She had to deal with her mum and an unhappy guest. She ended up breaking things in the dark and thought she saw something disturbing down by the river. Then to cap the evening off her best friend arrives in a state with her baby daughter after finding out her husband has been cheating on her.
Lucky regrets the time it took her to return home but her experience of first love crashed and burnt in an epic way. She feels she’s meant to be alone but the chemistry is growing between her and Risky.
What follows is a series of events and mishaps that lead her to believe someone wants her to fail with her endeavours. Some incidents even put her life at risk. Thankfully Risky is very good at helping her but the coincidences are building so she doesn’t know who to trust. Could she let Risky in and find love when he is such a mystery.
The tension builds as she fights to save her legacy. His past comes back to cause more problems and hinder his intentions with Lucky. Can they be together when everything seems against them.
Loved the cameos from characters from Jay’s other books. Is it bad luck or something more sinister. Just when you thought we had all the answers, we get a wonderful ending from Risky’s POV and it’s very enlightening! Adored this couple and all her misfortunes. A thoroughly enjoyable book.
Jay Crownover’s Ms. Fortune is an enthralling standalone novel that seamlessly blends mystery, suspense, and romance in the way only she can. From the very first page, the book pulls you in with its intriguing "who-done-it" vibe, as a series of unfortunate events unfold around the heroine, leaving readers questioning who to trust and what will happen next.
The heart of the story is the unexpected romance that blossoms between the heroine and a truly unlikely hero. Jay Crownover does what she does best here, crafting a hero who is rough around the edges yet deeply compelling and layered. His connection with the heroine is authentic, with their bond growing against a backdrop of mystery and danger. Their chemistry crackles with tension, and watching them navigate their attraction amidst chaos adds an emotional depth to the book.
One of the delightful surprises for long-time Crownover fans is the appearance of familiar faces from her previous books. These characters, while not dominating the plot, provide a sense of continuity that will be exciting for readers who have followed Jay's writing journey. It’s these little touches that make Ms. Fortune feel like part of a larger universe, even as it stands strong on its own.
In addition to the compelling characters and nail-biting suspense, Crownover also delivers an unpredictable plot full of twists and turns. Every chapter keeps you guessing, making it impossible to put the book down. The book expertly balances danger, romance, and moments of vulnerability, making Ms. Fortune an unforgettable read.
In summary, Ms. Fortune is a fantastic, gripping, and emotional standalone novel that showcases Jay Crownover’s talent for crafting engaging, complex stories. It’s the perfect read for fans of romance, mystery, and strong, unlikely couples. Don’t miss this one—it’s a true page-turner!
How much bad luck can one person have? Apparently a lifetime full if your name is Lucky. Back at the lodge/resort her grandparents built, and where she was raised, she's doing everything she can to bring it back to life after their death. Time and time again, something happens to threaten it. It's soon apparent that someone is out to sabotage it, and with everyone wanting her to sell, there's no telling who it might be. Not long after that, she realizes that not only is someone after her land, but now they are after her life. The one lucky thing she does have going for her is the stranger she hired to play Handyman. There is some mystery and suspense. And romance (and sexual content.) There is also some violence. Great characters. I really liked Lucky, and how even with her 'bad luck' she didn't look for pity. She just accepted that that is how her life was. Oh, she mentioned it quite often, but more in a self-depreciating way. Like she was the butt of a joke. She is definitely a strong character and had perseverance. Never gave up, even when it would have made her life so much easier. Risky, the handyman, had a mysterious past. He knew nothing about handywork, that was obvious, but his presence was a comfort for Lucky. There are a few surprises, and a few cameos if you are familiar with the authors other books. (I won't give any spoilers.) ;) The story has a sorta cozy vibe with a little more sizzle. (Though it's not an amateur trying to solve the crime.) It has that small town vibe and set in the Colorado mountains. There are a few 'bad guy/mean girl' characters, so not such a sweet small town. It's a good, well written story that is easy and quick to read. You'll be hooked from the very beginning.
Ms. Fortune is a romantic suspense novel from author Jay Crownover. This is my first Jay Crownover book, and I loved it! I gobbled this book up and loved every second of it. In Ms. Fortune, we meet our main character Lucky, who seems to be anything but her namesake. Her life feels like a series of misfortunes after misfortune, but she loves her family. And the resort her grandparents left her feels like a last lifetime to them, so she puts her all into it. I loved Lucky and Risky (Declan Risk)
Lucky and Risky were fantastic together. I loved how complex and real they felt. I was shipping them from their first scene together. This book flowed perfectly and I was easily able to gobble it up in one sitting. Lucky's bad luck takes so many twists and turns, it had be bouncing back and forth between some strange coincidences to something much more dangerous being at play. I loved the push and pull this book gave me. I was constantly trying to guess what was going to happen next while I was reading and it was so much fun for me!
Ms. Fortune was equally strong in the plot department as it was in the character development and romance, which is no small feat. Lucky and Risky felt so real to me. I think both character driven readers as well as plot driven readers who enjoy romantic suspense will love Ms. Fortune.
The ending of this book, left the doorway open to more. I believe some of Jay's books have character overlap and this story definitely got me thinking of some future branch offs that I would love to see. It would be great to learn more about the mysterious Risky! Overall, Ms. Fortune was a great read! I really enjoyed this and I can't wait to read more of Jay's books!
Lucky Fortune has bad luck. But she’s carrying on her grandparents’ dream fixing up and running the lodge they built. Over her head with all the repairs the buildings need, she picks up a handyman on the side of the road, Risky. Soon things start happening around her family’s lodge that can’t be explained and put Lucky and her guests in danger.
I enjoyed watching these two interact and take down the walls that each had up. Risky has secrets but does what he can to help around the property. He is clearly not a handyman, but is a quick learner and always willing to help fix his mistakes.
As the danger ramps up, they pull together, Lucky quickly trusting that he has her back.
The plot has great twists and turns, though it definitely started out with a slow burn. Once the story was really running it went full steam and kept me guessing.
It was fun to see cameos of past Jay characters and to see how Lucky’s story mixed with those previous character’s storylines. It isn’t important to know those past events, as the key pieces play out in these pages, but it is fun for long time readers to know they are there.
So I didn't even realize Jay Crownover was releasing this latest book. When I read her newsletter though, and saw her post about maybe not being able to keep doing audiobooks if they weren't selling, I knew I had to buy this one on Audible. I mean I got started on her books with audio I think. If not the very first one I read, then those afterwards as I got into a series she had already released. She always tends to pick different narrators instead of the same ones over and over, and I like that. This was a suspenseful book with not knowing why Lucky was having so many things go wrong at her resort. Not knowing why this guy who was obviously not an actual handyman volunteered to take the job when she offered it to him. I got a little frustrated with a few things, but was glad that the whole "I have to break up with him because I'm not good for him" didn't get to come fully realized due to things that interrupted her decision to do that. I loved that the author brought in characters from other series as well, one I'd read, and I'm pretty sure the other from a series I haven't read and probably won't since I don't care for that type of story. Once the relationship got physical it was a lot of steam. The author does progess and have story details happen - with the characters thoughts especially, during those scenes, so it isn't as easy to fast forward through them if I might want to in order to get on with the actual story. I liked the epilogue being from Risky's POV, got some interesting info that filled in some back details of the story. Another great story from Jay Crownover! This review was originally posted on Lisa Loves Literature
Ms. Fortune is a standalone by Jay Crownover and follows struggling ski lodge owner Lucky Fortune and her mysterious hired handyman Declan "Risky" Risk.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🍀 She's not like her name implies 🔨 Golden Retriever x Black Cat 🍀 Small town 🔨 He's not very handy, but he's a fixer 🍀 You in danger, girl 🔨 Secret skills 🍀 “You're the boss.” 🔨 Familiar faces
Cursed with an unfortunate name, Lucky Fortune is anything but Lucky. Having terrible parents, she alone inherited her grandparents' ski lodge in rural Colorado. After years of neglect, she is doing everything she can to extend their legacy and bring the lodge back to its former glory days. But she needs help, and she finds it in the form of a handsome, rugged drifter she picks up and eventually hires as the lodge's handyman---only he's not very handy. At least until things start happening that they can't explain. Despite her name, accidents happened, but when the accidents at the lodge seem to be more than just coincidence, Risky makes sure he's the man to fix his pretty boss's problems. But can he fix it before someone gets hurt...or worse?
I enjoyed this one. The characters were fun, and I loved seeing Risky breakdown Lucky's walls. And, of course, I love a MMC who goes feral when something happens to the FMC. There were so many twists and turns in this one that kept me guessing 'Whodunnit?'
One of my favorite things about this story is how Jay tied in other series/characters, but not enough where you needed to read the other books to understand who they were and what their tie was to this story. If you knew, it was a fun little treat. She's a master at that, and I'm sure those who are not big series readers enjoy it as well, and may even get them to read the other books.
If you get a chance to read Ms. Fortune, I'd say it's your lucky day!
Favorite Line "You aren’t the problem, Lucky. Everyone else is.
Thank you to Jay Crownover for a copy of this arc.
