AWAITING THE CREATOR’S RETURN : The Messianic Hope of an “Isolated” Indigenous People Group in the Amazon

Rate this book
This book gives a historical account of the search for an “isolated” indigenous ethnic group in the Amazon rainforest at the end of the 1970s. It tells about the arrival of a missionary team into the area, the formal contact with this people group at the end of 1987, and the efforts made to give them the help they needed. Found in serious danger of extinction, possibly due to malaria contracted through sporadic contact with hunters, Brazil nut harvesters, rubber workers, and miners who entered their territory before the contact, this ethnic group managed to reverse the it grew from 119 people in the first census to 136 in just four years of selfless assistance.
The book narrates in detail the arrival of the missionaries in Santarém, PA, and the subsequent steps taken to reach this indigenous group, thus fulfilling the Great Commission. These workers, driven by love for God and their neighbor, left their families in the city and faced long journeys by rivers and through the jungles. After establishing contact with this group of people, they decided to take their families to a base built in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, from where they would visit villages, treat the sick and contribute to the preservation of life, thus preventing the extinction of the ethnic group.
Through learning the local language and culture, they discovered that this indigenous population has in its worldview the expectation that Porapaohat, creator of human beings, who currently lives among the Kirahi (non-indigenous people), will return to heal the sick and resurrect the dead.
The book presents a fascinating dialogue between the indigenous worldview and the missionaries’ efforts, narrated with precision and respect for historical events. Its title, Awaiting the Creator’s Return, perfectly portrays the messianic hope of this indigenous population.
