All his life, French racer Daniel Leroux has dreamed of one winning the World Rally Championship. To do that, he needs a co-driver he can trust. If only he could find one….
At the end of a disastrous season, Daniel's manager replaces his incompetent co-driver with Frank Dufour, a young Canadian whose rally team let him go because he was gay. Daniel's in heaven, thinking he might find more than just a teammate, but his manager puts the brakes on, declaring Frank firmly off limits. Frank isn't any more ready to risk his second—and last—chance at making it in the WRC, no matter how attractive he finds Daniel. Sex and cars don't mix.
Amidst a bitter rivalry with another driver, sabotage attempts, extreme weather conditions, and the stress of racing, Daniel and Frank forge a partnership that defies the odds, but just as things start to heat up between them, a family emergency calls Frank away. Will they find their way back together or will the separation and the spotlight be too much for their fledgling love to survive?
Ariel Tachna lives outside of Houston with her husband, her daughter and son, and their cat. Before moving there, she traveled all over the world, having fallen in love with both France, where she found her husband, and India, where she dreams of retiring some day. She’s bilingual with snippets of four other languages to her credit, and is as in love with languages as she is with writing.
I rarely read M/M books with sports-theme; not because I don't want to, just that I rarely do. So, first of all, it's nice to read a story in the backdrop of car racing. I think Ms. Tachna makes a wonderful description about what happens behind; I enjoy the explanation of preparation and the "secret tool" in terms of what is under the hood.
As for the two MCs, I have an impression first that Daniel is the more fiery one, a hot-tempered racer, maybe because the first words from him in the book is "Putain de Merde!" *lol*. But as the book goes along, I feel Dany is not as hot-tempered as I think. Since he is the one with more lovers than Frank (he is a bi), it's actually fun to see him falling for his younger co-driver. The part with the short separation (it's not a break up, but you just have to read it) shows how Daniel is ready for the relationship as well.
Frank is also likeable, I love how competent he is in his job and the way he handles Daniel's sister, Isabella (the head mechanic). AND, I am also a little bit surprised (first, I think that Frank will be the bottom in the relationship, maybe because he's younger) that he takes control in the bedroom over Daniel, which brings into an interesting balance.
I enjoy how the two try to keep it under the radar at first, only to find out later that their closest friend and family is not as ignorant as they think *grin*
All in all, it's a nice story, no angst, and not much of conflicts. If you want something more emotional you might not get it here. BUT, I think I still give it 4-stars for the idea of car racing (and the fact that the jargons are easy to understand).
If I have a (major) complaint, it will be the lack of the "action" of the final race. The final race happens outside the book, what readers have is only the result. I would love to read that one too, something to make it a bit more dramatic.
It's my first from Ariel Tachna. Reading a sports novel is quite interesting. You've learning a lot in the ins and outs of a sport, you happen to know but you really don't know.
3stars rating for a read that at first you don't know where to go, and after a few chapters you are irritated with bitchiness of the characters, then end up in HEA.
This was such an enjoyable read! First, it's about Rally Racing, what's not to love. The author does a great job of immersing you in the world of Rally without overwhelming you. This part of her world building really allows the bridge of commonality between Frank and Daniel...they share a passion and you begin to share it as well.
Second, there is a lot of work put into building the friendship between Daniel and Frank and I really enjoyed seeing them become friends first. This just made everything sweeter.
If you need a nice, enjoyable read, this is the book.
This was a well written, informative and interesting book. It gave me a little insight into the world of car rallies that I had never been exposed to before. The characters were well-realized and interesting. That being said, there was a certain 'je ne sais quoi' that was missing for me. The characters were definitely likeable but they didn't grab my heart.
A fantastic read. Lots of tension between the two characters off track & lots of chemistry on the track! A slow burn of a romance which is understandable as a relationship between the two drivers is not what their team want. But Dany & Frank can’t stay away from each other & their feelings just won’t be denied. I loved the depth of their connection - a real partnership - & a little bit of suspense at the end of the story. The last scene was wonderfully understated.
Ariel Tachna has the skill to write out-of-ordinary love stories (like her Partnership in Blood series) but also very ordinary “extraordinary” love stories like this one: Overdrive is set in the World Championship Rally world, that is a little less shining than the F1 circuit, but is still a “public” setting; nevertheless, this is a behind the scene story, about very ordinary guys falling in love and having to face the common step by step routine to build a long-term relationship.
Daniel “Dany” is a French driver who desperately needs a good navigator; when the chance comes to hire Francois “Frank”, a young French-Canadian, the little detail that Frank is without job after being kicked out from his previous team since he is gay it’s not a problem at all: Dany is bisexual, and the fact that Frank is young and hot is a bonus.
When I said the story is ordinary, I meant it in a positive way: even if Dany and Frank’s love story isn’t, and cannot be, only a private affair (there is their team to consider, sponsors and public opinion), for most of the novel the author concentrate on their private life; how they first share an home together, allowing them to know each other and instil in each other heart the seed of love; how they discover common interests and target; and above all how they can replace the first rush of attraction with something deeper and more lasting.
Another point that I like was that, even if Dany and Frank had any chance to “consummate” this love immediately, the author preferred to delay the moment when sex becomes part of their relationship; I think the choice was to prove that, if you build steady basis, the love will be stronger. Dany is actually a don juan, basically playing the field with both men and women, always searching the next thrill, in love, sport and career; but once he “tests” it, he is always on the hunt for the next one, easily forgetting the previous flavour of the day. It’s not actually Frank’s choice to “deny” Dany, it’s more something just happening, even supported by Frank’s sudden need to go back home for some weeks, leaving Dany in France wondering what it could have been and what can be if they take a chance on this love. Once they arrive to the sexual part of their relationship, in any case they regain the lost time, and it was quite nice to see Dany, the “driver”, letting Frank taking the lead at least in bed.
The private side of the love story remains center stage for most part of the novel, and only in the last chapters the public side will make its appearance; even in this case, the author chose to deal with it in a quiet and romantic way, no drama at all.
Gentlemen start your engines! It's time for racing! If you haven't read Overdrive by Ariel Tachna, you absolutely need to. I completely recommend this read.
This is my first story by Ms. Tachna. I've read reviews of her other work and was intrigued. Then I saw she'd written a novel about racing. Got me right there. But this book isn't just a bunch of race lingo and confusing terminology. Nope. It's more than that. Ms. Tachna writes in a fluid manner that drew me in right away. I couldn't put the book down. It was like I was right there with Daniel and Frank, trying to figure out what to do with the emotions swirling between them. I cried, laughed, and wanted to know more.
The thing about the book, really, is that it's realistic. As I've said, it's not a overwhelming view of racing. No, Rally isn't Indy cars and it's not NASCAR, but if you like racing, it adds an extra kick. But I was talking about realism. I got to know Frank and Daniel as people. I saw them as something more than cardboard cutouts of race car drivers. In a lot of sport themed books, that extact thing happens. The character is defined by the sport. Not so in this book.
I loved the ache between them. No, not an injury, but the desire they have for each other. Ms. Tachna wrote their struggles and tribulations with a tenderness that I want to read more of. I've put Ms. Tachna on my auto-buy list. The book isn't terribly long, but enough to really get to know the characters. The love scenes steam and I needed a fan to cool me down.
If you want a story that's got a little racing, a lot of hot guy on guy loving, and a storyline to break your heart in a good way, then you need to read Overdrive.
I really enjoyed this book that had interesting characters and a great love story. You are exposed to the world of Rally car driving that the author put great detail into but didn't feel like an info dump. It was weird at first realizing that the MCs, Daniel and Frank were speaking French throughout the story but everything is written in English. I liked how the author put these two men together and had a slow build-up to their relationship instead of just hopping into bed. But I do have to say that I have never and would never apply the word 'voluptuous' to a man in my life, and I did a WTF when I read it, then reread it to make sure I wasn't seeing things. Overall a great read, and learned something new about rally racing, Definitely 4 stars from me.
Loved this story. The only thing that threw me occasionally was the switching between English and French. I understood that the MCs were speaking French (even though it was written in English), so when French phrases (written in French) appeared throughout the text, it pulled me out of the story (especially because they weren't translated and I spent a lot of time looking up what they meant). Aside from that, the story was lovely!
Daniel was such an interesting character. I enjoyed experiencing a bit of the world of rally car racing (in this book). I found myself pleasantly engaged as the characters' lives and relationship unfolded along with the rally. The rally provided a different and uncommon yet welcome context. Daniel and Frank were a really nice match. I would be interested to see what happens next and how their lives together move forward...
I enjoyed this one. a small element of suspense, just enough to give it a lift. HEA with likeable characters you can imagine driving off into the sunset. Might even feel inclined to read the M/F story just waiting in the wings.
I really liked the beginning of the story. The tension, the friendship, the lust... But sadly the tension didn't lead to a relationship I expected. I missed passion and depth. It was still enjoyable just not what I hoped it would be.
I think the author is a thorough writer. This book was a easy read, but it wasn't a simple read if you get my drift. I can't say I related to the characters, but I enjoyed learning about racing cars overseas.
The racing facts were done very well. I dont follow the sport to check for 100% accuracy but from what I know it was good. Nice sweet angst free romance. 3.75
