Wow. Wow. Wow. John Inman just took me for one hell of a ride. I'm still in a state of shock, to be honest.
This roller coaster of a book starts off with a really fun, sweet love scene that illustrates just how much in love the MC, Tyler, is with his husband, Spencer. Just a few pages later that love, and Tyler's entire life is taken away in a brutal hate crime.
Tyler is emotionally devastated, but his sadness turns to anger as he waits for the perpetrators to be caught. He meets the detective in charge of the case, Chris, and the two of them begin a cautious relationship.
I loved everything about this book. The love, the crime, the emotions felt by Tyler about everything - it all seemed so real. This is one of those rare books where I believed every word I was reading. Added to that is the terrific suspense of it all. I couldn't stop reading as Tyler's anger grew into a need for revenge and he proceeded to lose it and do some crazy things.
It's hard not to spoil this book, so I'm going to close here, but I will add that this is a nail-biter and the conclusion was like watching the last act of a great suspense film. This goes straight to the favorites shelf.

Warning: Cheese grater book
Inman is becoming my go to have my heart ripped out, shredded on the aforementioned kitchen implement, and shoved back in. Not pretty angst with pretty tears and pity-filled empathy, but gritty, snotty tissues thrown on the floor around you kind of emotional turmoil. Destined to be catalogued on my catharsis shelf.
Oh... I liked this one, but I have a feeling there's a couple points that will be difficult for some readers to swallow.
This is a tragic story of unbearable loss, cruelty, and acceptance. There's no slow descent, it's fast and sharp. The story revolves around a hate crime and homophobia. Inman does an amazing job expressing the sensory experiences of his characters taking advantage of smell and sound in addition to sight and touch. And not always the pleasant. There's realism here and it allows the reader entré into the story to bear silent witness.
People are unique. How one can recover, make peace and move on while others think 'no way' years later? Processing grief is individual. For some it is swift and others it lingers on them like a blanket. While I understood the trajectory in this story, I suspect a few readers are going to find Tyler's bereavement too short. Having uttered these words, I know they are true:
Race is a component more than mere characterization. It's uncomfortable and like real life skirts the line of reality versus stereotype. It reflects the awkward relations for a whole subset of Hispanic peoples living in southern California who went from Spanish subject to Mexican citizen to American citizen never having moved. Add in the Chinese American component with Spencer and some people are going to feel like this is sensitive ground to tread. I personally found Tyler's attitude honest, and refreshing because of it. Just to be clear, it is not a racist book. It just doesn't whitewash it.
And then there's the issue of vengeance, vigilantism, and the law. The intersection here is a very gray area. It will raises questions about ethics. To this I say, the law is about order not justice. It is about maintaining civil order, not recompensation for loss. Lady Justice holds a sword; she's not swinging it.
The book is about Tyler's transformative process through the stages of grief. Yes, there is a romantic subplot that transects and complicates his journey, but it is not the primary focus. Chris remains partially hidden because this story is Tyler's and from Tyler's point of view, and I think that causes some of the uncertainty in regards to the morally ambiguous decision.
Overall, gut wrenching pain and loss; enjoy the stages of grief. Fear not, you do reach the final stage.

Oh my word, where do I start? I suppose starting with how within ten minutes into this book, my stomach was in knots, my heart was pounding, I felt helpless, and tears were running down my cheeks, will give you an idea of just how much of an emotional roller coaster this story was and why once again I've come away from reading a John Inman story even more in awe of this authors ability to surprise, thrill and wow me with his writing skills.
The opening is clever. An intensely passionate love scene, it introduces Tyler and Spence. A married couple who are obviously very much in love. Reading the scene I witnessed (and felt) their soul mate connection as they made love in a familiar, loving way. A smart way to set up the calm before the storm, I didn't realise just how powerful and important this particular segment of the book was until what followed not long after, cruelly ripped apart the feeling of euphoria; punching me right in the gut as it threw me into a world of grief and hurt right alongside Tyler, who in a matter of moments had his whole world taken away from him in a vicious, random act of violence.
Plunged into the depths of despair and grief, and barely surviving physically himself, everything becomes affected. His home life, work, health, mental state and of course his emotional well being. He goes through different stages of grief including shock and disbelief, guilt, denial, depression... but when anger enters the equation and thoughts of revenge start taking form in his mind; as much as it's something that I wouldn't normally condone, I found myself wondering, just how far would I be prepared to go to avenge someone I loved that unconditionally?!? How intense would that need be? What would I be capable of, if that sort of bone deep anger took over my psyche?
Having witnessed the stark brutality of the crime, when it looks like the police are getting nowhere and the investigation has gone cold, I felt his pain and understood Tyler's need to want to go out there, take matters into his own hands and dispense the punishment that only when administered, would hopefully bring him to the final stage of acceptance and closure. Looking at it all with a sensible head, would that be the right thing to do? No of course not. But then in the throws of all consuming anger, grief and loss; "sensible" would be the last emotion you'd be feeling.
The only person who seems to care is Chris Martin; the compassionate, sympathetic homicide detective who takes on his case. During the investigation he slowly begins to break through the emotional barriers Tyler's erected around himself, but it takes time and even though this gentle cop stirs feelings in him that he thought he'd never experience again, Tyler still can't get past the mind numbing fury of his loss. He wants retribution and this leads him to make decisions and take actions that would never even have crossed his mind under normal circumstances...however these are not normal circumstances, and he's certainly not the man he previously was....

This is a beautiful love story. Actually, it's two beautiful love stories. In the beginning you have Tyler and Spence. Spence is taken away in a horrific way and Tyler is forced to move on with his life without the man he's loved for years. Then there is the story between Tyler and Christian, the homicide detective assigned to find the killers.
While Tyler is grieving, he also gets angry. How dare someone take Spence away from him! They had it all, dammit. Why would someone destroy that? This sets him on a journey of revenge. The men will get what's coming to them, legalities be damned.
I have to stress that while Tyler and Christian's relationship happens rather quickly, it's not so quick where the reader is saying "Hmm... it didn't take Tyler long to get over Spence." It's not like that at all. So much happens between the time of Spence's murder and Tyler moving on that it seems as if much more time has passed. The author handles the grief with a lot of sensitivity. You'll have to read the book to get what I mean.
An excellent book about finding love again. It's a little violent in some places and you might find yourself shaking your head a couple of times over Tyler's actions, but in the end I think you'll be glad you read this.
Keep tissues close. You'll need them throughout.

John Inman’s first book I’ve read was Paulie, and I loved the sugar sweet, easy and funny romance. Payback was entirely different, with this book John Inman took me on a roller coaster ride to hell and back… and what a ride this was.
Payback is a story that exactly revolves um that: Payback. Tyler is determined to take the law into his own hands and find the guys who murdered his husband Spence so brutally. Then Chris enters the story. He’s the homicide detective that works the case and he falls for Tyler the second he sees him severely injured in the hospital. I loved him instantly… gentle, calm, patient and understanding Chris.
Payback is a intense murder mystery and a tragic love story, a story of loss and cruelty of life. It’s gritty, violent, emotional and gut-wrenching sad… and it’s a story of new love… and hope.
John’s writing is gripping and entertaining and I was sucked in from the start. He has the exceptional talent of painting pictures in his readers minds and reading the story felt like watching a movie. I didn't read the story, I lived in it, experienced it first-hand. I was literally on pins and needles wondering where it would lead and I couldn’t put the book down.
Highly recommended, especially if you love Parmesan cheese… just saying. :)))

I'm going to be the nay-sayer here I guess. Looks like most everyone else loved this book. It just didn't work for me. I didn't find it emotional or angsty and with the subject matter I should have. I should have been crying. I should have had tissues. I should have needed wine. Instead I drank tea and a few times almost choked on my Thin Mints cause I was sighing so loudly. I was immediately defensive at the first of the book because of the initial sex scene. It was just filled with metaphors and I hate metaphors in sex scenes. HATE them. Never do I want to hear things like "he buried his face in my crotch and blew into my balls like a playful father blowing into a baby's belly." You immediately lose me if you're comparing sex to fathers and babies. Not the time. Not the place. (Talk about a mood ruiner.) And then there was "He eased his ass down gently onto my face and settled in like a mother hen covering a nest of eggs."
I don't want fathers and babies in my sex scenes and I also don't want barnyard animals there. Both of these images are taking me places I really don't want to go.
This may seem like a petty complaint, and maybe it is, but because of this the story lost me right in the begining. I never connected with Spencer and Tyler as a result of my eye rolling during their sex scene. By not connecting to them I lost most of the angst of the book. Then enters Chris the super unprofessional homicide detective. Yeah inappropriate relationship with a client much? Toss in some border line stalker behavior and some covering up crimes and I wasn't feeling him. Tyler....eeh...I liked him in some places but.....I don't know. He was ok. His emotional journey was ok. Just not the gritty emotional story I thought this was going to be. I was super disappointed. I was disappointed like a tween who can't get tickets to a One Direction concert. I was diappointed like a squirrel who can't find any nuts. I was disappointed like a leprachaun without a pot of gold. I was disappointed like a ..........
Well you get the idea. I was disappointed.
**It should be noted that metaphor filled sex scenes are going on the list with 20-something year old virgins w/magical vaginas. They are dead to me & I never want to read another one again. EVER!!. **

I LOVE John Inman, but I have been unlucky with the last few books of his, that I tried.
This one had ALL the right ingredients, and I cried like a TEETHING baby during chapter one and two... Holy moly, that was emotional, and a set-up to rival some of the best set-ups ever, but then, THEN things fell apart a wee bit for me.
-Tyler's grieving period for Spencer was short. And I know that people grieve differently, but it felt 'rushed' and since Spencer was supposedly the 'ONLY one who could ever love him like that' (#paraphrasing) the set-up felt wrong, since Cris caught Tyler's eyes quite fast.
-Tyler was ALL alone, and it really rubbed me the wrong way... Like: No colleagues, no friends, no family, except for Cris.
-Tyler's fear and agoraphobia was *poof* gone, when anger arrived. After the attack and Tyler's injuries, that didn't ring true since Tyler is not an action hero.
-NO THERAPY!!!!! Big pet-peeve of mine... Do not tell me that Tyler magically got over his attack *like this*.
-Lastly: the 'Payback'-aspect... I don´t
BUT this is Inman, and he is a brilliant author (IMO). I shed a lot of tears, and the grief was palpable when it was there.

Genau an ihrem Jahrestag erlebt Tyler wohl das Schlimmste, was einem Menschen, der liebt, passieren kann, denn sein Ehemann Spence wird direkt vor seinen Augen ermordet. Tyler selbst kommt nur knapp mit dem Leben davon, doch als er schließlich im Krankenhaus wieder zu sich kommt, ist nichts mehr, wie es war. Ihr Hund ist weg, die Eheringe gestohlen und Spence längst beerdigt.
Tyler fällt in ein tiefes Loch und ich habe beim Lesen einige Male die Tränen zurückhalten müssen, während er versucht hat, irgendwie wieder Anschluss zu finden und doch immer tiefer in den Abgrund rutscht. Spence' Familie, seine Freunde, sein Job – alles löst sich in Wohlgefallen auf und Tyler ist das auch nur recht. Er will keine Hilfe, er will Rache für Spence' Tod. Also zieht er irgendwann los, kauft sich eine Waffe und nur wenig später ist er praktisch gezwungen sie zu benutzen, um nicht ein zweites Mal angegriffen und ermordet zu werden. Das Schlimme ist nur, Tyler fühlt keine Reue. Er weiß nicht, was er fühlt, ob er überhaupt noch fühlen kann, und warum lässt dieser Cop ihn nicht einfach in Ruhe?
Denn Chris, der Spence' Fall bearbeitet, fühlt sich von Anfang an zu Tyler hingezogen und er gibt nicht auf. Wieder und wieder versucht er Tyler aus seinem Schneckenhaus zu locken und er ist dabei so behutsam, aber auch beharrlich, dass Tyler erst merkt, wie sehr ihm Chris bereits unter die Haut geht, als es längst zu spät ist. Doch da sind seine Schuldgefühle gegenüber Spence', deren Mörder immer noch nicht gefasst sind, und dann ist da sein Geheimnis und diese verdammte Waffe.
Gott, ist das ein Buch. Umwerfend. Ich wollte abends eigentlich nur mal reinlesen. Als ich fertig war, war es Mitternacht und mir tränten die Augen. Wunderbar geschrieben und ohne den mahnenden Zeigefinger, der bei solche moralischen Konflikten gerne mal erhoben wird. Stattdessen muss ich als Leser selbst damit klarkommen, wie ich die Lösung finde, die Chris und Tyler am Ende austüfteln, um zu verhindern, dass Tyler für sehr lange Zeit ins Gefängnis wandert. Und ja, ich kann gut damit leben, dass die beiden ihr Glück finden, rechtliche Frage hin oder her. Denn diesem Abschaum, der Spence totgeprügelt hat, weine ich keine einzige Träne nach.
Darum bekommt das Buch auch volle Punktzahl und eine dicke Leseempfehlung von mir. Zusätzlich geht ein großer Dank an den Dreamspinner Verlag für das Rezensionsexemplar.

Stattdessen muss ich als Leser selbst damit klarkommen, wie ich die Lösung finde, die Chris und Tyler am Ende austüfteln, um zu verhindern, dass Tyler für sehr lange Zeit ins Gefängnis wandert. Und ja, ich kann gut damit leben, dass die beiden ihr Glück finden, rechtliche Frage hin oder her. Denn diesem Abschaum, der Spence totgeprügelt hat, weine ich keine einzige Träne nach.
Darum bekommt das Buch auch volle Punktzahl und eine dicke Leseempfehlung von mir. Zusätzlich geht ein großer Dank an den Dreamspinner Verlag für das Rezensionsexemplar.

Re-Read: Ich kann gar nicht viel dazu sagen, ich finde es noch immer großartig und bewegend. Und ich habe es definitiv nicht zum Letzten mal gelesen. :-) John Inman entwickelt sich zu einem meiner Lieblingsautoren, definitiv.

Mit einer Sterne-Bewertung tue ich mir immer schwer. Dieses Buch pendelt zwischen drei und vier Sternen. Weil ich doch Probleme mit gewissen inhaltlichen Dingen hatte, wären 3 Sterne angemessen, aber weil das Buch mich doch so packte und beschäftigte, habe ich auf 4 Sterne aufgerundet.
Darum geht’s:
Tyler und Spence sind ein glückliches Paar. Der Überfall im abendlichen Park kommt aus dem Nichts und endet mit einem schwer verletzten Tyler im Krankenhaus und der Erkenntnis, dass sein Liebster Spence nicht mehr lebt. Das katapultiert Tyler aus seinem bürgerlichen Leben in eine Spirale von Rachefantasien und Verzweiflung. Nur Chris, der ermittelnde Polizist, scheint der einzige Licht blick in Tylers Leben zu sein.
So fand ich’s:

Denn Chris hat Erfahrung mit Menschen in Tylers Situation und weiß, wie er sich verhalten soll. Er lässt Tyler Zeit, drängt ihn zu nichts und ist einfach für ihn da. Chris war für mich ein Charakter, dessen Verhalten und Gefühlsleben ich gut nachvollziehen konnte, obwohl Tyler der Ich-Erzähler in diesem Buch ist.
Mit Tylers Gefühlswelt hatte ich allerdings ein bisschen Probleme. Nicht, dass seine heftigen Emotionen, seine Verwirrung, Aggression und seine Verzweiflung nicht sehr deutlich geschildert und auch für mich nachvollziehbar gewesen wären, denn das waren sie sehr wohl. Mir ist klar, dass man auch schon ein halbes Jahr nach dem Verlust seines geliebten Partners wieder offen für eine neue Beziehung sein kann, auch wenn die verlorene Liebe sehr plötzlich und durch einen Gewaltakt endete. Mir ist auch klar, dass es einem passieren kann, dass man in einer Gedankenschleife aus Wut und Rache gefangen gehalten wird und nicht wieder in ein positives, nach vorne schauendes Leben zurückfindet, wenn einem die Liebe seines Lebens durch ein brutales Verbrechen geraubt wird. Was ich nicht ganz nachvollziehen kann ist, wie man diese beiden Gefühlszustände mehr oder weniger gleichzeitig durchmachen kann.
Außerdem kann ich nicht alles gutheißen, was Tyler getan hat. Und wer das Buch gelesen hat, wird ganz genau wissen, was ich meine. Ich hatte damit zu kämpfen, was Tyler getan hat und wie dieser Aspekt endete. Weil ich nicht spoilern will, werde ich es nicht näher ausführen. Aber soviel sei gesagt: Es war verständlich und nur allzu menschlich, was da passiert ist und wie die Beteiligten damit umgegangen sind. Ich persönlich fand es nicht in Ordnung und auch nicht durch die Umstände, weder auf Täter- noch auf Opferseite, zu entschuldigen oder auch nur abzumildern. Aber als Schilderung, wie so etwas ablaufen kann und auch wie die Beteiligten dabei fühlen und damit klar kommen, fand ich es absolut nah am wirklichen Leben.
So bleibt mir als Fazit die Begeisterung für Inmans eindringlichen Schreibstil, der mich dazu bringt, auch nach anderen Büchern dieses Autors Ausschau zu halten. Die Lovestory zwischen Tyler und Chris war sehr schön zu lesen, emotional, zögerlich und zärtlich und sehr passend für den psychisch angeschlagenen Tyler und den bodenständigen Chris. Gedämpft wird meine Begeisterung aber durch diesen für mich nicht immer nachvollziehbaren emotionalen Spagat Tylers zwischen einem Festhängen in der Vergangenheit, seinen Rachegedanken und seiner neuen Liebe zu Chris, in die er sich zuerst zögerlich, aber dann sehr schnell mit allem, was er hat, hineinstürzt. Und mit der moralischen Bankrotterklärung aus einer emotionalen Notlage heraus, mit der ich alles andere als glücklich war.

Als Tyler nach drei Wochen Koma im Krankenhaus aufwacht, ist nichts wie es war. Schwer verletzt hat er einen Angriff überlebt. Sein geliebter Mann Spence jedoch nicht. Auch der gemeinsame Hund Franklin ist wie vom Erdboden verschwunden und Tyler schwankt zwischen Wut, Verzweiflung, Resignation und dem Wunsch nach Rache. Rache für Spence – um jeden Preis!
Eine eigene Familie hat er nicht und die Familie von Spence trauert ebenfalls. Man zieht sich voneinander zurück und fragile Bindungen zerbrechen unter dem Verlust des geliebten Menschen. Es gibt jedoch einen Menschen, der immer wieder Tylers Barrieren durchbrechen kann. Den Ermittler Chris, der den Mord an Spence aufklären soll. Doch die Hinweise sind dünn und vage. Zwar kommen Tylers Erinnerungen zurück, doch nach fast einem Monat sind die Chancen sehr dürftig. Das weiß Chris, das weiß aber auch Tyler. Und diese Tatsache zieht Tyler immer weiter in die Dunkelheit, die nur Chris immer wieder zu durchbrechen vermag.
Payback ist ein sehr intensives Buch, das den Leser wirklich von der ersten Seite an zu fesseln vermag. John Inman schreibt wahnsinnig fesselnd und berührt durch die Emotionen zutiefst. Bisher kannte ich nur seine humorvollen Bücher, doch auch mit dieser Romantic Suspence konnte er mich begeistern.
Tyler ist bitter, verletzt und getrieben von Rache. Seine Handlungen mögen drastisch und moralisch bedenklich sein, jedoch kann man sie nachvollziehen und auch verstehen. Spencers Tod ändert alles und Tylers Qual, der Schmerz und seine Trauer mischen sich eben immer mit dem diesem kaum bezwingbaren Wunsch nach Rache.
Chris hat eine Ahnung was in Tyler vorgeht. Er ist lange genug Polizist und ihm sind Verluste und Tragödien nicht fremd. Immer wieder versucht er Tyler zu warnen sich nicht völlig in seiner Rache zu verlieren und vor allem sich selbst nicht zu verlieren. Gleichzeitig bemüht er sich um Professionalität Tyler gegenüber, zu dem er sich vom ersten Moment an hingezogen fühlt. Dieser Aspekt ihrer Bekanntschaft, die später zu einer Freundschaft wird, kompliziert natürlich ihre Beziehung. Denn auch Tyler spürt, dass zwischen ihm und dem Polizisten etwas im Entstehen ist. Und am Ende wird Tyler sich entscheiden müssen.

Als Tyler mit seinem Ehemann ihr 4 Jähriges Jubeläum feiert steht er danach vor den Trümmern seiner Existenz. Das Liebste in seinem Leben genommen und selbst gerade so davongekommen, muss er sich zwischen Trauer und Rache zurück ins Leben kämpfen.
Zur Hilfe kommt ihm hierbei Detective Christian Martin, der mir von der Beschreibung her ein wenig vorkam wie Inspektor Columbo. Und ich liebe Columbo. Bei Christian fühlte ich mich sofort wohl. Ein sehr einfühlsamer Detectiv, der es schafft, Tyler ab und an aus seinem Tief zu ziehen.
In Payback sollte man sich Taschentücher bereit halten. Das Buch ist keine leichte Kost. Sie handelt
von Gewalt und Tod, grenzenlose Trauer und Rachedurst, aber auch Liebe und Geborgenheit.
Die übergroße Trauer, die Tyler erlebt, ist schwer zu beschreiben. Man fühlt seinen tiefen Schmerz und die Trauer fast schon körperlich. Ich hatte ständig einen Kloß im Hals, und manchmal wurde es selbst mir zuviel und ich musste laut weinen, weil ich sonst an dem Schmerz erstickt wäre.
Als er den Mördern seines Mannes gegenüber steht, muss er sich entscheiden ob er seinen Rachedurst stillt, oder sein Leben weiterführt und sich auf wieder auf die Sonnenseite des Lebens begibt.
John Inman versteht es, seine Leser gnadenlos in das Geschehen zu ziehen. Ich musste erst ein paar Tage vergehen lassen, bis ich mich wieder einem neuen Buch widmen konnte. Ich hoffe und freue mich auf mehr Übersetzungen von diesem Autor.

This is a very moving story with plenty of powerful emotions. It starts with a bang, and I have to warn you, it is brutal. The senselessness of Spencer’s death and the impact it has on Tyler once he realizes Spencer is gone is excruciating. There are two ways to react to the death of a partner: one is to sink into depression, and the other is to get angry and look for justice or revenge. Tyler is the type of man who gets angry, and the title of this book describes exactly what he is after: payback. Luckily (for me) it is also about dealing with that need for revenge and what comes after the worst is over. The journey Tyler takes when moving from one to the other is fascinating, and so realistically described that this story grabbed me on page one and didn’t let me go.
Tyler is a bookkeeper, a man who likes his life organized and well planned. He and Spencer were making big plans when everything comes crashing down and Tyler suddenly has to deal with the grief of losing the love of his life and a life on his own. The brutal murder is hard enough to deal with, but the initial lack of suspects really gets to Tyler. I can’t say I approve of some of the things he does in his quest for “payback”, but I understand where he is coming from. And his gradual return to the land of the living and how he learns to hope for the future again was a beautiful thing to watch.
Chris Martin is a homicide detective, a man of the law, but he is also human and has a bigger heart than most cops. Chris has some hard choices to make, and I think he navigates the impossible situation Tyler puts him in with empathy and a toughness you don’t find in many people. His decisions are interesting, unexpected, and I don’t think they will be understood by many people, never mind other cops. I could see where he was coming from, and for Tyler’s sake, I was relieved Chris was on the case and not someone else!
If you like gritty stories about the violent reality of life, if tough men who have to take difficult decisions are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is as fascinating as it is full of hope, then you will probably like this novel. It is a murder mystery of the brutal kind, and yet it is also a love story that will give you hope and might even make you smile.

Jetzt weiß ich wieder, warum ich eigentlich keine Krimis lese … Ich heule … ich heule eigentlich permanent während ich sie lese.
Kein Mensch soll das erleben müssen, was Tyler durchgemacht hat. Ob ich das so nachvollziehen kann, dass er Rache will – ja, durchaus. Wenn ich jetzt mehr ins Detail gehe, spoilere ich und zwar so sehr, dass ich es lieber lasse … naja, nicht so ganz … ein bisschen muss ich ;-)
Die Art und Weise, wie Tyler seinen Partner genau an ihrem Jahrestag verliert, möchte man sich gar nicht vorstellen. Sogar jetzt beim Schreiben steigen mir gerade wieder die Tränen hoch. Seine Reaktion danach kann man mehr als gut nachvollziehen. John Inman hat mit den Reaktionen Tyler’s den “typischen” Mann aus amerikanischen Filmen nachgezeichnet – inkl. aller Gedankengänge, die (so glaube ich) jedem von uns in dieser Situation durch den Kopf gehen würden. Ob man sie allerdings so ausleben muss, lassen wir mal dahin gestellt. Wie gesagt, nachvollziehbar sind sie durchaus.
Vom ersten Moment an merkt der Leser, dass da was ist zwischen Christian und Tyler. Und auch hier kann man Tylers Emotionen und Gedanken mehr als nachvollziehen – ist es angebracht, so kurz nach diesem tragischen Verlust schon wieder etwas für einen anderen Menschen zu empfinden? Sind diese Empfindungen echt oder nur der Situation geschuldet? und und und … Man merkt, dass man als Mensch wirklich in Konventionen gefangen ist und nicht mehr (was des Öfteren auch durchaus gut ist) nach seinem Gefühl handelt und diesem nachgibt.
Die Geschichte ist sehr emotional, in sich schlüssig und für mich inkl. des Showdowns und der Reaktion von Christian – wenn auch rechtlich nicht korrekt, so doch – mehr als nachvollziehbar und beim Lesen der Passage von mir mit einem verständnisvollen Nicken abgesegnet worden.
Da ich nicht so oft Krimis lese, kann ich nicht beurteilen, ob diese Geschichte für den klassischen Krimi-Fan gut oder schlecht ist. Mir hat sie gefallen, sie war mir in den romantischen Teilen manchmal einen Ticken zu schnell – obwohl Tyler länger mit sich hadert, ob er sich schon wieder auf einen neuen Mann einlassen kann/darf/soll (ich sage nur Konventionen …) – aber was weiß ich schon, wie man nach einem solchen Schicksalschlag reagiert (Gott sei Dank) und wie sich in bzw. nach einem Schockzustand Gefühle entwickeln. Aber da es ja in der Hauptsache ein Krimiplot mit hohem Romantikfaktor (oder andersrum?) ist und jeder Mensch anders agiert und reagiert, ist es gut so, wie es ist.
John Inman bringt das zwischenmenschliche Element sehr gut rüber. Man kann die Gefühle der Protagonisten (egal in welcher Szene) wirklich gut nachvollziehen, so dass man von der Geschichte “festgehalten” wird. Dies brachte mir nicht nur einen tränenreichen Abend, sondern auch eine sehr schlafarme Nacht ein. Die Reaktionen der Protagonisten konnte ich zu 99% gut nachvollziehen und das ist mehr, als bei vielen anderen Büchern, die ich schon gelesen habe.
Wie gesagt, ich bin kein Krimispezialist, aber mir hat die Geschichte sehr, sehr gut gefallen :-) und ich kann sie euch wärmstens empfehlen.
Ich habe bisher noch keine weiteren Bücher von John Inman gelesen, aber mit diesem Buch könnte er den Beginn einer wunderbaren “Leser/Autor – Freundschaft” gelegt haben :-).
Jetzt weiß ich wieder, warum ich eigentlich keine Krimis lese … Ich heule … ich heule eigentlich permanent während ich sie lese.
Kein Mensch soll das erleben müssen, was Tyler durchgemacht hat. Ob ich das so nachvollziehen kann, dass er Rache will – ja, durchaus. Wenn ich jetzt mehr ins Detail gehe, spoilere ich und zwar so sehr, dass ich es lieber lasse … naja, nicht so ganz … ein bisschen muss ich ;-)
Die Art und Weise, wie Tyler seinen Partner genau an ihrem Jahrestag verliert, möchte man sich gar nicht vorstellen. Sogar jetzt beim Schreiben steigen mir gerade wieder die Tränen hoch. Seine Reaktion danach kann man mehr als gut nachvollziehen. John Inman hat mit den Reaktionen Tyler’s den “typischen” Mann aus amerikanischen Filmen nachgezeichnet – inkl. aller Gedankengänge, die (so glaube ich) jedem von uns in dieser Situation durch den Kopf gehen würden. Ob man sie allerdings so ausleben muss, lassen wir mal dahin gestellt. Wie gesagt, nachvollziehbar sind sie durchaus.
Vom ersten Moment an merkt der Leser, dass da was ist zwischen Christian und Tyler. Und auch hier kann man Tylers Emotionen und Gedanken mehr als nachvollziehen – ist es angebracht, so kurz nach diesem tragischen Verlust schon wieder etwas für einen anderen Menschen zu empfinden? Sind diese Empfindungen echt oder nur der Situation geschuldet? und und und … Man merkt, dass man als Mensch wirklich in Konventionen gefangen ist und nicht mehr (was des Öfteren auch durchaus gut ist) nach seinem Gefühl handelt und diesem nachgibt.
Die Geschichte ist sehr emotional, in sich schlüssig und für mich inkl. des Showdowns und der Reaktion von Christian – wenn auch rechtlich nicht korrekt, so doch – mehr als nachvollziehbar und beim Lesen der Passage von mir mit einem verständnisvollen Nicken abgesegnet worden.
Da ich nicht so oft Krimis lese, kann ich nicht beurteilen, ob diese Geschichte für den klassischen Krimi-Fan gut oder schlecht ist. 2,5-3 Confesso che mi aspettavo una lettura carica di commozione, invece sono rimasta piuttosto perplessa.
Ok, la parte iniziale è molto bella - inutile negarlo: il legame Spence-Tyler è narrato con tenerezza, il fato che si abbatte su di loro sembra preparare il lettore a un libro di risalita, rinascita, giustizia e seconda occasione di felicità per il sopravvissuto (ma era una convinzione mia e - col senno di poi - del tutto infondata).
Sostanzialmente il vedovo non riesce ad affrontare il lutto e si trasforma in un simil psicopatico, con un'idea di vendetta non poi così originale: occhio per occhio, ecc.
Con un'idea molto americana del pistolero-eroe, il tizio va in giro con un'arma nello zainetto e si difende da sè (magari in caso di nuova aggressione bastava un taser o altre armi di difesa che negli States sono peraltro permesse, ma qui è meglio andare sul sicuro. Il Bang è più risolutivo).
Ecco, non volevo certo una rivisitazione di "Delitto e Castigo" di Dostoevskij, però un minimo di rimorsetto di coscienza sì.
Tutto viene liquidato/giustificato con un "era un rifiuto della società" e "chi lo ha ucciso ha fatto un favore"... ma stiamo scherzando?
Ora, la vita che non vale nulla per una persona, può avere un peso diverso per altri. Quanta gente dovrebbe finire pistolettata per strada, perchè alcuni di noi, fregandosene di polizia, processi, sentenze, la ritengono tout-court un "rifiuto"?
Siamo in un romanzo, tutto può accadere, però ne deriva un messaggio distorto.
E per un tizio che si è fatto giustizia da sè, confidavo che almeno il tutore della legge si ergesse a discrimine della coscienza. Invece no: alla fine è tutto un "piccolo, ti capisco. Piccolo, non permetterò che ti tocchino. Ho insabbiato tutto, ecc.".
Senza contare che i due - per sommo sprezzo del valore "vita" - sono già lì a ciucciarsi, prima ancora che il cadavere ai loro piedi sia freddo.
Mi spiegate dove sta la differenza, se tutte le parti in causa uccidono al di fuori delle regole e di un sistema di giustizia neutrale?
Un omicidio non annulla un altro omicidio. Fanno due omicidi in totale.
E qui c'è pure un terzo fatto di sangue, per cui la presunta bilancia di giustizia è persino squilibrata, in sfavore dei nostri due new coccoli.
Quindi 3 stelline per la prima parte, oggettivamente intensa e ben narrata. Sul resto ho espresso i miei dubbi.

Oh my....Well this is my second John Inman book and oh my it's a heartbreaking read.....Spence and Tyler married for a year just having gotten rings they take their dog for a walk and all hell breaks loose....Your heart will break for Tyler and what's he's been and going through....Losing his husband and even missing his funeral.....Christian is the hot cop who's in charge of his case and oh my you can see where it's going but it's done oh so slowly.....Tyler needs to heal and the things he does and feels while he heals will break you apart.....I really felt for him......This is an amazing book and I don't want to give spoilers but you definitely have to read it...I need an easy fun loving book to read now...But I will for sure re-read this one...Spence and Tyler for such a short time at the beginning and then Tyler and Christian.....oh and not to forget poor Franklin the dog...Amazing book x

Wow where do I start my first John Inman read and I thoroughly enjoyed it! From the very sweet beginning between long time couple Spence and Tyler you had me fooled and lulled into sweetness until SOMETHING happened! Not at all nice but set up the rest of the story that had me riveted from start to finish. Tyler you broke my heart more than once it was so emotional it was like we were right there feeling his pain. Thankyou John Inman for a heartfelt read, it won't be my last from you.

I have to say something concerning this AMAZING book "Payback" by John Inman is that if you have not read it, you need to do so RIGHT NOW. It was so raw and real and the experience taught me what a gifted writer Mr. Inman is and what an emotional story he tells. I wish I could give this book 10 stars!!!
When I was reading this.....the further I got into the story....the more I felt like I was living it. It was so immediate and in the present, at times I had to stop reading and just take a breath before starting back up.
Tyler and Spence are a married couple who are truly in love and completely perfect for one another. On their anniversary, Spence surprises Tyler with long awaited, very unique matching wedding rings. They then take their dog, Franklin, out for a walk to the Doggy Park, and thus begins a journey through endearing love, joyful happiness, confusing uncertainty, crippling fear, unreasoning horror, emotional devastation, unfathomable grief, insurmountable hate and twisted vengeance.
Enter a detective who is determined to solve this senseless crime and who finds himself inexplicably drawn to the young man in a coma, finding that the connection is even stronger once he awakens.
I read it in one 2 hour sitting and though I loved getting to the ending, I hated that it was over. This one will be recommended to everyone I know who loves a good...a GREAT.....story.

Wow. Just wow! This is the first book I have read by this author and he had had me hooked from the very first page. He had me crying 11% into the book. By 15% I was sobbing. And the tears didn't stop there. They kept coming throughout the book. What happened to Tyler and Spence was utterly heartbreaking. Though Tyler didn't cope as well as people might have expected him to. After all murder is never a good reason. Though it was technically self-defense. I am so glad Tyler had Chris there for him. Both as the detective one his case and in his personal life. I truly believe without him Tyler's life would have crumbled....
I have recommended many books that have fast become my favourites. Though mine like this one. I recommend this book whole heartedly to EVERYONE. No matter if m/m books aren't your favorite. This book is SO much more than two men falling in love. Read it. Trust me you will not be disappointed. It very much the best book I have read all year. I can't wait to read more from John Inman. I have just been on an amazing rollercoaster ride of emotions and do not regret a second of it. Totally in love with this book!!!

This book was very special! I wish I could describe it a lot better in english.
The book wasn't what I expected at all. It was better, so much better. I love to feel with the people in books an it is easy for me to do so, but this time the book took me in, shook me to the core and spat me out. It left me with a feeling of unease because of what Tyler did even when I could understand his motive. What happend to him and Spencer was so cruel and horrible. I could understand that he wants to have revenge but what he did was wrong too and I knew it, but at the same time I hoped he would get away with it even when I couldn't understand how someone can live with something like that. I can still feel my pulse speeding up when I think about it.
But maybe to calm my nerves John Inman gave me a happy end....ok a very good end not a sappy, romantic happy end but the perfect end for this book.
After this book I can say I liked Mr. Inman and his writing before but now I love him. I will read more of his stories.

This book starts out with an intimate moment between married lovers. I knew something bad was coming, so the walk had me dreading what would happen even before it did, and it turned out to be even more awful.
I had mixed emotions about Tyler. I could understand why he reacted the way that he did, after such a traumatic event, but his way of dealing with the trauma had me cringing and only partially sympathetic to his plight. The relationship with Christian started off well, but the way that it morphed into something more felt like a bit of a reach, given the way Tyler was dealing(or not) with the world. Christian's attraction to him was a bit hard to understand.
I know some people had difficulty with the outcome, but it made a certain kind of sense to me; if not wholly moral, there was enough self-defense and justice in the actions to make me accept the way things occurred. I like this author's writing style, and despite feeling slightly less invested in both main characters, the writing held my interest from beginning to end.

I really love this author...The opening scene of this book was so beautiful and powerful...The love Spence and Tyler have for each other literally leaps off the page...Then tragedy happens and Tyler's world is thrown upside down...
The writing was so good and I felt every emotion that Tyler had...I've lost someone close to me so I know exactly how Tyler felt...lost, sad, angry... I liked Chris as a character...he was sympathetic and was what Tyler needed...I just think in my own opinion that Tyler's feelings for Chris happened to fast...BUT I would like to stress that it's just my own opinion...maybe some people move on at a different pace...I just felt that he moved a little too fast...

Mr. Inman did it again…..and in my case, he did not deliver a funny book like “Shy”, “Hobbled “ or “Paulie”. But more like “A Hard Winter Rain”, “Head-on” and “Jaspers Mountain”. (All of them are wonderful books, if you haven´t read them)
This is the story of Tyler that loses his Husband Spencer, to some violent Gay-bashers. Tyler is hurt badly but Spencer dies.
Chris Martin is the police officer that gets his case. He falls in love with Tyler the moment he sees him, and will do anything to help Tyler, solve his case, love Tyler and protect him.
He get his hands full, when Tyler decide that personal payback it the thing he need to give the murders.
Such a great book, a real crime book with the “special” John Inman touch.

I found this book to be a very intimate look at a survivor of extreme mental, physical and emotional trama. What goes on inside the psyche of someone who has suffered such overwhelming loss where the only thing left to fell, besides nothing at all, is hate and fear. Well worth reading, but be aware that this book contains graphic descriptions of physical violence. Well worth buying and reading.

What a story. I couldn't put it down. Read and finished it the same day. I just wanted to make sure that justice was done and done right. This world will be a better place if the same happens in real life all the time. Very happy ending too. This is the second John Inman book l have read and l honestly have to say that l'm about to go and find a lot more of his books to read because he is a wonderful storyteller.

Un très bon roman où encore une fois la plume de l'auteur m'a subjuguée.
Cette histoire est prenante, glaçante, lancinante. J'ai tout aimé, du début à la fin.
Ici nous découvrons Tyler, un Tyler heureux, un Tyler abattu, un Tyler perdu, un Tyler tout en rage, un Tyler amoureux. Son histoire, c'est le bonheur, c'est le deuil, c'est la souffrance et cette impression qui se faufile dans son cœur, insidieusement, que quelque chose lui manque, que ce manque sera récompensé par sa vengeance, une vengeance pour apaiser la douleur, pour apaiser l'âme, pour faire disparaître les fantômes.
Si le résumé en raconte bien assez à mon goût, il nous reste énormément de surprise à découvrir, d'émotion à vivre, de sentiment à ressentir.
La relation qu’entretiennent Tyler et l’inspecteur Christian Martin est des plus inhabituelle, elle cache un quelque chose, elle cache ce sentiment que nous avons de ne pas vraiment croire en Christian, en ses gestes, ses actes, ses paroles. Il nous rend suspicieux, il est intriguant. Cependant, la conclusion de ce sentiment est juste poignante.
Tyler et Christian, c'est une relation à naître, c'est des hauts, des bas, un rapprochement par la douleur, en douceur. Ce sont des mots susurrés, partagés au grès des jours, avoués dans la demi mesure, dans la peur.
J'ai beaucoup aimé la façon dont l'auteur a traité ce lien qui se tisse entre eux. Un lien où les fantômes restent, survolent, un lien où la renaissance et l'amour verront s'effacer les brumes funestes.
Un roman très court où l'essentiel est abordé, où l'essentiel est dit. Un roman dont j'ai apprécié la trame car l'auteur nous offre une histoire de deuil, de culpabilité, de renaissance et d'amour. Le tout réunis avec des mots justes, vrais, dans l'émotion et le suspens.
Deux personnages opposés tant dans les caractères que dans les réactions.
J'ai apprécié la façon dont l'auteur nous raconte Tyler, ses faiblesses, ses hallucinations, ses pensées folles qui envahissent toute logique et cette appréhension de l'amour qui l'envahi, par l'écoute, par le soutien, par le regard, par les gestes, un amour qui sonne comme une trahison. Il faudra beaucoup de courage à Tyler pour dépasser les noirceurs et les contradictions qui l'obsèdent.
J'ai aimé ce que l'auteur m'a proposée avec ce récit. Je l'ai trouvé original dans sa façon d'exister, de prendre forme et dans ses révélations, car les surprises s'égrènent jusqu'au bout.
L'histoire est très dure tout autant que douce. Cette alternance de sentiments est en symbiose avec le cœur et l'esprit de notre Tyler.
Nous vivons cette enquête avec nos deux protagonistes, une enquête cohérente dont le dénouement l'est tout autant. J'ai apprécié avoir juste le point de vue de Tyler car c'est bien de lui ici que l'on parle, de sa souffrance, de sa déchéance, de cette peine qui l'envahie, jusqu'à l’engloutir, de cette force qu'il a d'accepter l'écoute de Christian, d'accepter ce que son cœur sait déjà malgré les doutes.

La plume de l'auteur est un coup de foudre pour moi. J'aime son écriture si vraie, si tranchante, si percutante. Il emploi des mots crus, durs, dégoûtants, sanglants qui vous confèrent un vrai sentiment d'être dans le texte, de vivre ce que nos héros vivent. Mais le plus exceptionnel, c'est que l'auteur manie tout aussi bien les mots tendres, affectueux, les instants pudiques, romantiques, timides, les mots d'amour, les mots qui vous touchent en plein cœur.
Une plume qui vous fait vivre moult sensation, moult tourbillon émotionnel.
Pour conclure, je dirai que ce roman m'a touchée, m'a émue. Sa construction est agréable car nous avons un déroulement rationnel tant dans les sentiments que dans l'enquête. Un roman qui m'a fait vibrer de dégoût, de peine, de joie, de surprise.

Cette histoire est prenante, glaçante, lancinante. J'ai tout aimé, du début à la fin.
Ici nous découvrons Tyler, un Tyler heureux, un Tyler abattu, un Tyler perdu, un Tyler tout en rage, un Tyler amoureux. Son histoire, c'est le bonheur, c'est le deuil, c'est la souffrance et cette impression qui se faufile dans son cœur, insidieusement, que quelque chose lui manque, que ce manque sera récompensé par sa vengeance, une vengeance pour apaiser la douleur, pour apaiser l'âme, pour faire disparaître les fantômes.
Si le résumé en raconte bien assez à mon goût, il nous reste énormément de surprise à découvrir, d'émotion à vivre, de sentiment à ressentir.
La relation qu’entretiennent Tyler et l’inspecteur Christian Martin est des plus inhabituelle, elle cache un quelque chose, elle cache ce sentiment que nous avons de ne pas vraiment croire en Christian, en ses gestes, ses actes, ses paroles. Il nous rend suspicieux, il est intriguant. Cependant, la conclusion de ce sentiment est juste poignante.
Tyler et Christian, c'est une relation à naître, c'est des hauts, des bas, un rapprochement par la douleur, en douceur. Ce sont des mots susurrés, partagés au grès des jours, avoués dans la demi mesure, dans la peur.
J'ai beaucoup aimé la façon dont l'auteur a traité ce lien qui se tisse entre eux. Un lien où les fantômes restent, survolent, un lien où la renaissance et l'amour verront s'effacer les brumes funestes.
Un roman très court où l'essentiel est abordé, où l'essentiel est dit. Un roman dont j'ai apprécié la trame car l'auteur nous offre une histoire de deuil, de culpabilité, de renaissance et d'amour. Le tout réunis avec des mots justes, vrais, dans l'émotion et le suspens.

J'ai apprécié la façon dont l'auteur nous raconte Tyler, ses faiblesses, ses hallucinations, ses pensées folles qui envahissent toute logique et cette appréhension de l'amour qui l'envahi, par l'écoute, par le soutien, par le regard, par les gestes, un amour qui sonne comme une trahison. Il faudra beaucoup de courage à Tyler pour dépasser les noirceurs et les contradictions qui l'obsèdent.
J'ai aimé ce que l'auteur m'a proposée avec ce récit. Je l'ai trouvé original dans sa façon d'exister, de prendre forme et dans ses révélations, car les surprises s'égrènent jusqu'au bout.
L'histoire est très dure tout autant que douce. Cette alternance de sentiments est en symbiose avec le cœur et l'esprit de notre Tyler.
Nous vivons cette enquête avec nos deux protagonistes, une enquête cohérente dont le dénouement l'est tout autant. J'ai apprécié avoir juste le point de vue de Tyler car c'est bien de lui ici que l'on parle, de sa souffrance, de sa déchéance, de cette peine qui l'envahie, jusqu'à l’engloutir, de cette force qu'il a d'accepter l'écoute de Christian, d'accepter ce que son cœur sait déjà malgré les doutes.
