Tate O’Connor is a dancer with dreams of making it onto the Broadway stage. When the story begins, Tate has been living in New York for over a year and, after tirelessly working his ass off, has just landed his first job dancing in a new Broadway musical.

Nervous but excited, Tate eagerly begins rehearsals ready to start living his professional dream to the max. On top of meeting some friendly fellow dancers on day one, Tate is also befriended by two of the show’s lead performers, one of which is Broadway’s rising star and heartthrob extraordinaire, Mike Chang.

Tate has been harboring a crush on Mike for a while now, so the idea of working and socialising with guy is almost too much for Tate’s insecure self to handle. Gossip suggests that Mike is a bit of a player and enjoys engaging in a new showmance as he moves from play to play, but these salacious rumors just don’t fit the Mike that Tate comes to know. Unfortunately, being the self-doubting, shy guy that he is, Tate translates Mike’s interest as simple kindness and nothing more, and proceeds to avoid Mike at every turn in an attempt to spare himself future hurt feelings.

Thankfully, some well-meaning friends intercede and talk sense into Tate, and he and Mike eventually have an honest conversation about their actual feelings and interest in each other.

This story was well written. As a musical theatre fan I really loved the setting and the references to other shows I love and adore. Although I have no background in theatre myself, every detail in this story relating to the backstage workings of a production rang true and I feel the story was stronger for the apparent authenticity of Tate’s experiences.

I literally have only one complaint: I wish this was longer and more fleshed out! I found Tate completely endearing and I would have happily read and savored a full length novel featuring his blossoming romance with Mike. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be and I’ll have to rein my greedy self in yet again – but it’s always a sign of a good short story when I’m gagging for more, right!?!

Broadway Babe was a sweet little reading treat and I won’t hesitate to read more from Long in the future!

A short but fully complete story..
My second read by this author and again a very strong and dynamic read, awesome way of writing...

This story from a dancer his pov we get a look inside the dance world and dancers mind.
When Tate sees famous singer/dancer Mike Chang rehearsal for the same show as Tate, he knows this beautiful man is far out of his league, but you can dream can't you?

Tate is working his ass off at the rehearsals and then he gets the opportunity to be dance captain...he wants to tell someone the big news but he is quite alone in New York well aware of the different time zone he is.
As the dance captain he gets a chance to be near Mike. Tate is so self conscious it's endearing.
He feels clumsy and when talking to Mike he's stumbling over his own tongue.

Mike ask Tate to help him with dance practice. And I can tell you that worked out just fine...

There is one filthy dancer named Donnie....ghoosshhh I could kill him. He just hit Tate at his most vulnerable place...."out of your league"
And Mike just can't get it why Tate is avoiding him....

Tate was a lovely honest personality I just loved him with al his funny thoughts and qualities
and Mike.....so into Tate and such a sweet guy.

This story was from the first letter till the last captivating as hell, well developed and entertaining as Broadway itself.
Very lively and sparklingly written. It gave me all the right feelings a good story should give.

Highly recommend A really mustread

This was a really enjoyable novella set in the world of Broadway musicals. Tate is a dancer and the show he was just cast for is his big break. He works hard and tries to focus on his job but he can't help but be attracted to one of the main cast members, Mike Chang. As Tate's director realizes how talented he is, he's asked to give Mike some extra training. There's a definite spark between the two men but Tate can't imagine that someone as famous as Mike would be interested in him.

This story is shorter in length but still packs a lot of story into the space. Tate is a charming story teller and while he's insecure, it comes across as realistic and age appropriate. There's no unnecessary drama. Mike is also a great character and I really loved the two of them together.

I thought this was a well done story and I enjoyed it. I recently discovered this author through another book and I've been making an effort to read his back catalog. So far I have not been disappointed.

Too often with novellas I feel unfulfilled and rushed. In Broadway Babe I didn’t feel that way at all! I love books with dancers, artists, talents and amazing people. There’s was a lot to love in this book.

The novella is told entirely in Tate O’Connor’s POV. He is a hard working person. I mean, his commitment was seen by all and all he worked for is finally appreciated when he makes it into his first Broadway show! I was so happy for him and I barely got a chance to know him. I just fell in love with his character from the get go.

Mike Chang is this big deal actor and singer who is also in the play, and he’s not at all as shallow and crappy as SOME PERSONS make him out to be. He too is a great character. His longing for Tate and his patience spoke volumes about the man he truly is.

I even loved all the secondary’s… okay minus one. LOL. It’s so difficult to make a novella seem like it wasn’t a speedfest. This is a very enjoyable story that I absolutely recommend!

This sweet short story takes 1 1/2 hrs. to read, but feels like a novel.
*** Tate has worked hard to be an awesome dancer, hoping for a Broadway show.

Now he has it ! The star is Mike Chang, Tate's idol and crush. Rumors are rampant of how Mike has a "shomance" in every show he's in, and then moves on.
Hearing this, Tate decides to avoid Mike to keep from being the next notch.
It's comforting to see dreams come true, and this short is fun. There's a kiss and a HFN.
ENJOY !

I liked the book but was Not Impressed with the narration.
For a Shorter Novella you do get quite a bit of information and a full story in this book. Tate is a dancer on Broadway with his first show coming up. He’s got a huge crush on one of the other stars Mike. There’s a bit of Drama between some of the cast Donny and his Minions, trying to cause problems between the two of them. And some inner monologue from Tate about his feelings and how the others make him feel about himself, even though he worked his ass off to get where he is. He still feels like he’s not good enough for Mike, even though Mike does not feel that way at all. Mike just wants to be with him. I almost dnf’d This book just for the narration. But I did enjoy the book and premise of the story, since I really do like stories about dancers. So I would recommend checking out the book.
Audio - I’ve never listened to this narrator before. And Im not sure yet if I want to give him another chance in the future. But. I was not really impressed with his performance on this one. His voices for the main characters were fine. But man, his voices for some of the supporting (Female) characters were just over the top obnoxious and kind of annoying.

Review:
If you are in need of a quick pick-me-up feel good story, this is the one. Bright lights, the thrill of dancing before an appreciative audience. Working with one of the hottest broadway stars. This is Tate’s dream come true. This is a very short story that was finished before I was ready to let go of these complex characters. The plot of this story is pretty basic. Boy, Tate O’Connor comes to New York City to become a broadway dancer. When he lands a spot as one of the dancers in a new musical, Tate thinks his life couldn’t get any better. When he finds out that the actor that he has been crushing on has the lead in the play, he is beyond happy. Mike Chang has a reputation for having his share of “showmances.” When he feel a connection with Tate, he doesn’t understand why Tate is keeping away. There is strong chemistry between Mike and Tate, but insecurities make it difficult for Tate to take a leap of faith. This story moves very quickly. There is drama caused by a jealous actor, as well as some very supportive friends, new and old. There is a fun, so in your face, happy ever after. Surprisingly, there is a good amount of character development is such a short story. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to all of you who wanted to be a dancer when you grew up.

Love this book. Sweet lovey dovey story between an up and coming dancer, Tate, who just landed his dream job on Broadway and his superstar crush, Mike. Tate just landed his dream job and realized he's working with his crush. They have some test and trials but finally Tate pulls it together and realized Mike wants him just as much and they get together to make it work.
Just a darling little story

Okay, so I definitely had some trouble with this short read. For all that Tate was a sweet guy, and definitely carried the story, the plot itself, not to mention some of the characterizations and the choppy pacing, were harder for me to enjoy.

Tate tells us the story, and it’s his story. About how he’s finally landed his first show, how he works hard and does well, and all the bits about how a Broadway show work. I liked Tate a great deal, and I liked how he was both confident and insecure. He’s young, and that plays into it. Coupled with the fact that it is his first show, and he has every right to be nervous and unsure. I liked the way he grew into his role in the show, stepping up to also be dance captain, and how he took his responsibilities—both in the show and in real life—seriously. His insecurities read as real, and that definitely worked for the story, as well as his desire to run instead of talking to Mike. All of these things read true to his character. But as much as I liked the MC, most of the rest of the story lacked for me.

Mike was a rather two-dimensional character. We didn’t get to see him nearly enough on page, and barely got to know him. His name and his story threw me off a bit, and anyone who has seen Glee or High School Musical will know why. While he was adorable for what we saw, I needed so much more to connect to him, and therefore, Tate’s connection to him seemed superficial at best. The romance was barely developed, and most of the story was them apart, with a few bits at the end to tell us, not show us, that things were going well. There was a spark of chemistry between Tate and Mike in the beginning, but it never caught fire. So this part definitely didn’t work for me.

Oh my freaking god, that was atrocious. Amateurish. "Luckily, I'm perfect" first person narrator. Who's just perfect! And so much more talented than everyone else! And there's a Baddie who is a bad dancer and horrible and only there because his dad's rich...etc etc etc. and probably NOT GAY and HOMOPHOBIC (I stopped at 55%, so never found out and don't care). And/Or a TOTAL SLUT because I bet this book slut shames later on (okay, I have no idea if that is in any way fair or accurate, but the book is really that basic and clumsy).

What a disappointment. I've been rereading my faves, and my just resume. So many of my recent forays into new books have been dreadful.

I bet I would have loved this (or written it - in fact I think I did) when I was 12. And no one ever ever saw it. That was a good thing.

Broadway Babe is a short and light hearted romance by JC Long.

When Tate suddenly finds himself working with his Broadway crush Mike, he doesn't know how to deal with it. Mike has long been a fantasy for him.

These two sweet men are enjoyable as can be, as they quickly click with each other, and their feelings develop naturally. It's tough to take chances as is it, but their relationship gets off to a rocky start as they have to deal with meddling and rumors. They have to face their doubts and fears, but in the end Tate and Mike are perfect for each other.

The Broadway play makes for a fun setting. We are fully immersed in the theater antics, the development of a play, and all the surrounding politics. I enjoyed this a lot.

Overall, Broadway Babe is a fun read. At just 76 pages, check this one out when you're looking for a quick, delightful book.

What's not to like?

Great writing style, charismatic characters, and a peek into the hectic, dedicated commitment of the dancers who give their all for the craft they love. That they can separate their inner insecurities from their dedication to perfection speaks volumes about their commitment to their dreams.
All these attributes and emotions were writ large in this engaging story.
I love stories about the dancing world. The sacrifices, dedication, hard work, and even the heartbreaking disappointments dancers live with draw me in. That, at least some, realise their dreams of success is very satisfying.

One of the things I like the most in the MM book is the fact that I can travel among various scenarios and situations, I can read about places and jobs I love the most. I love theatre novels, dancing and rockstars romance stories. And this one is greatly written. I loved the growing of Tate and Mark romance, the way they meet, get in contact and get split before rejoin again. What I felt lacking is a real ending to the story, or maybe, too much preparation and then nothing about the making out of their relationship. Maybe there will be a second episode? Hope so.

reread. same opinion as for the above.

I probably belong to the few people, who didn't really like this book. I bought it mainly for the gorgeous cover, but the blurb didn't sound too bad either.

Overall it had a cringeworthy quality and it was largely Tate's fault. The book is written from his point of view and it reads like the diary of a teenager. It didn't read like it played in a working environment for adults, more like the charaters were in school with all the problems and troubles from school. I couldn't connect with Tate at all. I found him rather full of himself and immature at times. Let's not get into how he saw the people around him.

Nope, didn't work for me.

A mellow story with balanced mix of work and romance. Drama was rather minimal, although the MC (quietly) did make an ass of himself, and there's no sex.

Bought this when it was released back in January, but forgot about it (as I already have a MOUNT of to-read books, of course) until my friend Irene read it. She said there wasn't sex in it (ha!) and well, I jumped on that.

It was a nice read. I did like the vibe of Broadway. I loved Tate's voice when he talked about his hard-work to get to the point where he finally be a part of an ensemble for a Broadway show. I admire people with their passion for things like dancing or acting in theater and really pursuing it. So I was happy that Tate got his chance.

Of course Tate was being such an idiot when it comes to his crush. Clearly he needed to fix his insecurity and self-doubt on that point. I loved that it was the FEMALE friends who called him out on it. Oh yes, we need strong female characters that are not just being there as an obstacle to the men falling in love. Yes, siree. So thank you for that, Mr. Long

Read this within an hour or so on a Saturday afternoon :)
