Thirteen Years and a Heartbeat: A Small Town Age Gap Romance

Rate this book
Eli Mercer has spent thirteen years keeping his life small.
Quiet days. Grease-stained hands. A loyal dog. And a garage on the edge of Clayborn where no one asks questions about the war—or the scars it left behind.

Then Kennedy Briggs limps into his shop with a dying truck and a desperate look in her eyes.

At eighteen, Kennedy is already carrying more than most people twice her age—late-night diner shifts, bills she can’t pay, and a sick grandfather depending on her. Clayborn says she should stay in her place. The gossip says she should stay far away from Eli Mercer.

But Eli isn’t the monster the town whispers about.
He’s steady. Protective. The kind of man who fixes what’s broken—machines… and maybe people too.

The more time Kennedy spends in his garage, the harder it becomes to ignore what’s growing between them. A slow, undeniable connection that feels like safety. Like home. Like the one thing she was never supposed to want.

But Clayborn doesn’t forgive scandal.
And when the town’s judgment turns into something darker—and Kennedy’s fragile world is threatened—Eli is forced to decide how far he’s willing to go to protect the girl who’s already stolen his heart.

Because some loves aren’t convenient.
Some loves are worth risking everything.

A clean, slow-burn small-town romance filled with protective love, healing, and an age-gap connection that refuses to be ignored.

5/5 — soft, steady, and quietly devastating in the best way

This book doesn’t crash into your heart… it settles there. Like a slow sunrise you didn’t realize you were waiting for.

Thirteen Years and a Heartbeat is the kind of story that thrives in the quiet moments. The lingering glances. The unspoken things. The gentle, almost fragile way two broken lives begin to lean toward each other.

Kennedy is carrying far more than someone her age should ever have to, and you feel that weight in every chapter. She’s resilient but exhausted, hopeful but hanging on by threads. And then there’s Eli… closed off, guarded, built from grief and silence. The kind of man who doesn’t say much—but when he shows up, he really shows up.

Their connection?
Not rushed. Not loud.
Just… inevitable.

What makes this story shine is how safe their love feels. Even when it’s forbidden. Even when the town turns sharp and unforgiving. Eli isn’t the danger—he’s the shelter. And watching Kennedy slowly find a place to breathe again inside that safety? It hits deep.

The small-town setting adds that extra layer of tension—the whispers, the judgment, the pressure closing in like a storm you know is coming. And when it finally breaks… it hurts.

But in that ache, there’s also something incredibly tender:
• healing that doesn’t happen overnight
• love that chooses patience over passion
• and a bond that feels earned, not given

If you love:
✨ slow-burn that actually burns
✨ protective, emotionally layered heroes
✨ heroines who fight quietly but fiercely
✨ small-town drama with real emotional stakes

…this one will absolutely wrap around your heart and stay there.

Final thought:
This isn’t a whirlwind romance. It’s a heartbeat—steady, persistent, and impossible to ignore. 💛

This is a small town romance that definitely pushing the limits of the age gap romance. With that being said, the author does a great job at telling Eli and Kennedy’s story. Kennedy has had a rough life and Eli grows close to her as she spends time at his garage. Soon the people in town are talking and it’s not good. Sheriff Vickers even visits Eli at the garage and Kennedy at the diner. He should be worrying about his drug dealing nephew, in my opinion. How are things going to turn out for this new couple. No spoilers, so grab your copy and find out. I will say I didn’t care for the ending and that was another factor in my deducting a star.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my volunta d honest review.

This was an interesting book of trying to have courage and strength when everything seems to pull you down.  I liked Kennedy and how she never gave up when most people might.  She was not going to let people define her as trailer trash.  If anything, that helped give her the ambition to want to become a nurse and to leave Clayborn, Virginia behind.  It was nice how she seemed to bring out the best in Eli, but I didn't like the age difference between the characters.  I received an advance copy of this book, and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

An enchanting and emotional story about a pure love story between an eighteen year old girl and a thirty-one year old man. Small town, old fashioned living, loving, and managing their lives with grace, hard work, loyalty, and love. Nothing handed to them, everything earned by hard work. I loved the furnishing of their apartment from thrift stores and and curbside finds. Starting college/nursing school the summer before the usual fall start time. The intensity to learn, the determination to succeed. The friendship, love, and commitment between Eli and Kennedy... it was phenomenal!

This book slowly weaves you into Kennedy's and Eli's lives. A clean slow romance. Yes there's an age gap but there's quite a few of those today. My own grandmother had a 19 year age gap (which is a bit much to me) but they are both adults and Eli doesn't take advantage of Kennedy he's just steady and there which is what a lot of romances could use. Clayborne is a depressing town but there's still light to be found even in such a place. I look forward to reading their continuing love story!

Taboo, smoldering romance without the spice.

I read this today know this was an HEA without spice and was happy to be surprised that it has Dark Romance and Thriller undertones. Its book 1 of a 4 book series and perfect for you Romance readers who dont like the explicitness of a Dark Romance book, but still want some of the thrill. 3.5⭐️ for me

This book was absolutely amazing! Normally, I am not a huge fan of slow burns because I am rather impatient but I felt like the slow burn of this book was exactly what it needed. There was age gap, a little bit of forbidden love, and heaps of drama. Definitely recommend reading this if you haven’t done so already!

This is a story of two people drowning in grief and history who find each other and bring each other back to the light. Small town residence Kennedy and Eli have gone through so much and are able to lean on each other to escape the downward spiral. Their relationship isn’t easy and there is an age gap that kind of pushes the boundaries but the author keeps the story clean and progressing.

I am not sure if I can put into words how I feel about this book. It touched me in ways I did not expect. Kennedy’s truck breaks down and because of it she finds Eli and they find a love neither of them were expecting. The small town is against them. She is 18 but still in high school and he is 31. It’s a spice free age gap romance. I definitely recommend this book.

A better life

Her Grandpa's truck broke down again . But this time its near an old repair shop. Life changes when she meets the mechanic. It's a good story, but a sad one with a sunny future.

Very intriguing

I related to this story having grown up in a small town and experiencing the same scrutiny. I look forward to reading the next chapter in Kennedy and Eli’s life.

I don't remember how I learned of this book, but it grabbed hold of me and I'm hooked!

I want to state upfront.. this is a clean read... however there is mild language and one other issue that bothers me a bit (I will share after the review so as not to spoil) There is also a large age gap and the FMC is finishing up highschool. No doubt this can be an issue. They are NOT romantically involved while she is in high school. It is obvious there is attraction, but neither acts on it.

Kennedy is 18 and close to graduating highschool in small town Clayborn. Caring for her sick grandfather while juggling school and working long hours at night a local diner, Kennedy has little time for typical teenage life as she strives to keep them a float. When her truck breaks down, she rolls into a local garage hoping the fix will be easy and cheap.

Eli Mercer, the owner of the garage, has kept to himself for years. Working mainly on his own in his garage on the edge of Clayborn. Following his years in the military, he is content with his quiet solitary life. That is until Kennedy and her dying truck roll into his garage.

Their connection is immediately evident and despite Eli's attempt to ignore it, he can't. Rumors and gossip abound about the older man and the to young for him girl. But what people think they see and the truth are far apart. Eli is protective and caring and steady. He shows up when Kennedy needs him and she brings a sense of purpose and meaning to his life.

In light of gossip created scandal, Kennedy and Eli hold tight as they step forward to make a life together.

SLIGHT Spoiler: Again.. this book is clean. Nothing explicit. Not fade to black. But the two main characters do end up living together outside of marriage. In this book, it is "platonic" but I feel certain that will change as the series progresses. At this point I plan to continue reading unless the clean status changes.

This was book 1 in a series revolving around 2 outcasts that find a beautiful friendship in each other in a town that is built on judgement, hypocrisy and utter small town BS.
I loved how both MC's were struggling to live day to day but finding each other gave them what they needed to persevere through what life was throwing at them.
It made me cry, it made me laugh and I want to read the other books in this series to find out how their lives evolve.
