Heyval has hidden from her necromancy in the most mundane of places. A bakery. Where the dead come to life. A pity she can’t stop herself from helping those around her.

Heyval was at university when a catastrophic event took out a hall full of visiting dignitaries. She runs for the explosion and arrives just in time to save the last living person in the room... right after he dies.
Necromancy is highly illegal at university, and using it is a death sentence. Heyval escapes ahead of the enforcers and makes her way to a nice, quiet city where she can blend in and just be herself with some limitations.
After needing to use necromancy again, she finds herself being peer-pressured into a visit to the local club, where sex is exchanged and anonymity assured. What could possibly go wrong?

“So, um. How do I ask this?”

“What?”

“Will you withdraw so I can scavenge for food?”

I have a love-hate relationship with Viola Grace books and I had taken a break from them. I decided to continue with this story because I gave book 1 in the series 4 stars.

I am the turducken of magic.”

I always love the heroines in her story. The heros are always complementary. But I always hate that at the stories are basically written as if the reader is in the room with the characters, can see what is taking place, read the facial expressions and what is not being communicated by the prose. Which, no shock there, we aren't! It's like you have the characters, the system but don't bother with proper world building. Then for this story in particular, it felt like the author was writing in translated English. It's like I form a sentence in Kiswahili then I grammatically translate it into English. It will be correct but there's a nuance there that makes you understand this wasn't originally written out in English.

“Hey, Bailey. Are you keeping calm?”

“Yeah. This is a bit much.”

“Yeah, but the food is good, and someone else does the dishes.”

There were a lot of powerful people here today, and she had only met about five percent.

There was humour. Dry humour. Found family and then at the end, a barrage of new characters introduced that I'm sure will make a part of the continuing series.

So, relatively enjoyed this but again I think I'll take a breather from Viola Grace books.

Really enjoyed this one especially the MMC. I have a soft spot for kitsunes and I was rooting for him to sweep Heyval off her feet, which he did with his sweetness.
