SoulFire brings an amazing quartet to an operatic finale. The stage has been set, its players are ready, and the most exhilarating action and romancing is set to play with grand flourish. This entire journey has been a wild rollercoaster of a ride. Every page begged to be turned and explored. To contend with heartache, to discover triumph, and to revel again and again the swoons.

This isn't just a gorgeous love story, it's a journey ready to be experienced in every way. Ilsevel and Taar have been through hell and back again, and yet, nothing, be it death, war, or monsters, can keep them apart from one another. I think above all other feeling, it was the sheer awe in witnessing how great their love is. It's a love that built quickly yet so strongly, and every facet of it feels so earned between them.

SoulFire picks up right where CurseBound finished a.k.a where I left off screaming and grieving! I was afraid I'd spend too much time in this one feeling impatient for Ilsevel and Taar to reunite, but fear not! Not just because you won't be spending the whole book waiting, but also because the build up in waiting is actually delicious. The time spent apart ends up reinforcing the connection between them, bonded or not! I was already sold on their love, but had I not been, the beginning of this work would have absolutely brought it home. It's actually rare for me to invest in a long series when it comes to a couple. My attention tends to wander off and invest more in side characters, but four books along and not once did that feeling being totally enamored lessened. And for me, that's incredibly impressive. I never once stopped caring. Ilsevel and Taar's story was brilliant, and their ending so well earned. I felt moved with every facet of it.

I hate to say goodbye, but with a certain sister still missing...maybe this is more of a see you later. But this is certainly the finale of a gorgeous romance. I loved it dearly from beginning to middle to ending.

Thank you Sylvia Mercedes for this complimentary eARC, I leave this honest review voluntarily.

Once again I’m a sobbing mess.

Sylvia continues to write the most beautifully heartbreaking stories that will have you crying your eyes out one second and filling your soul with happiness the next.

The journey for Taar and Ilsevel to get their happy ending was hard-wrought but absolutely perfect. There were so many moments that I had no idea how they would ever get back to each other but Sylvia’s writing is pure magic and everything came together beautifully. I couldn’t have asked for a better ending🥹

Thank you to the author for the early copy!

You know these series when you're afraid of the end because you have to move on with your life and there won't be a new book? This is one of them. But don't get me wrong - I'd read it again for the first time if I could.

I fell in love with Ilsevel from the beginning, I loved her impulsivity and her "bad" decisions when it comes to protect the ones she loves. She's authentic in a very refreshing way.

It's usually from Ilsevel's or Taar's perspective and I loved the addition - it shows perfectly that nothing is just black or white. I don't have to agree with certain actions but I can understand desperation and also love that goes further than death - many of us romanticize it - sometimes you get what you wish for and it turns out so very different from your imagination.

I cried. I laughed. I was maaaaaad. This book gave me all the emotions.

Thank you for trusting me again with an ARC. I can't wait for what comes next.

For a four book series, the twist and the ending sure were rushed and a huge letdown. At the 80% mark, I was certain we’d get Book 5, even though I knew this was the last in the series.

Great overall story, that really could have been done in 1-2 books. When you have multiple paragraphs and chapters talking about broken harmonies, un-song (whatever that is), and the philosophical wonders of song, it’s easy to run to 4 books.

This series could have done with more character and plot development that expansive thoughts on song which only made me roll my eyes in disbelief.

a duality of significance

• fantasy romance / romantasy / high fantasy
• numerous perspectives
• final book in a series
• interconnected series

| fantasy romance | romantasy | high fantasy | unicorns | the end of a series | numerous POV | spicy | action packed | HEA | connected series | unique world | gods gifted | unique magic | world building | quest | adventure | warlord x captive bride | emotional |

An incredible ending for an unforgetable series. This quartet is easily one of my favorite series from Sylvia Mercedes. I have read several series from Syvlia and the WarBride quartet is by far her most romance forward, layered with indulgent spice, while still delivering a sweeping scale of high fantasy.

Sylvia writes for readers who crave rich, high-fantasy worlds infused seamlessly with romance. This quartet stands out as one of her strongest storylines because of its layered world-building, staggering stakes, and the profound depth of love at its core. The emotional journey is immense. The characters grow in ways that feel impossible at the beginning of the story, and watching them grow into who they were meant to be is incredibly rewarding.

At its heart, this story captures a stunning duality: love and loss. The crushing weight of grief set against the soaring intensity of devotion. SoulFire is not always an easy read, but it is absolutely worth it. The world is lush and imaginative, supported by lore and history that extend far beyond this single quartet. For readers familiar with Bride of the Shadow King, this series expands that foundation, continuing threads while venturing into entirely new realms. The scope of the overarching story feels even larger than these two series combined, and I can’t help but suspect there may be more to come within this universe.

One of my favorite aspects of Sylvia’s writing is that while romance is central, it never overshadows the stakes. There is always a quest. Always impossible odds. Always something monumental to fight for. That balance creates a gripping sense of anticipation that never falters. This quartet, in particular, carries an immense emotional weight. I will truly miss these characters and their fierce, fiery unicorn mounts, more than I can even express. I feel deeply connected to this story and its entire cast of characters.

It’s a uniquely whimsical series, and I sometimes struggle to explain it to readers who don’t gravitate toward high fantasy romance. Unicorns bursting into flames and singing gods magic can sound almost fanciful when summarized. But on the page, it is anything but silly. Whimsical, yes. Silly? Never. It is powerful, emotional, and deeply moving. This series made me cry real tears and feel their loss deeply.

If you love whimsy paired with depth, epic fantasy infused with passion, and stories that balance heartbreak with hope, this is a series I wholeheartedly recommend.

happy reading, friends xx

🌶️ What an ending to Taar and Ilsevel’s story… the author had me worried there about a happily ever after even happening (more than once!) but I wouldn’t change a thing about how it plays out.

Ilsevel has become the woman she was meant to give by embracing not only her gods-gift, but by also standing up or herself despite others still insisting she conform to their expectations. Her father, King Lorangar highlights this when saying he was tired of all these men telling him that Ilsevel was theirs and Lorangar must hand her over immediately and the king’s plans for his daughter be damned. As far as I’m concerned the king hasn’t a foot to stand on here as he is the worst of the lot.

Ilsevel has a lot of men’s expectations to work against to find her own strength, worth, life and destiny. An awful lot… not just her two would-be husbands, but head of the Misphato order, her father, the Licorna people (of course that’s a mixed bag of mostly men, but there’s a few women in there as well). For a young woman that is a lot of peer pressure to find yourself in.

Yet Ilsevel does… she makes plenty of mistakes, but continues to fight for what she wants despite it, and that is someone to root for.

Taar has found growth as well, and has his own demons to wok through and let go of, and one in particular is very hard to get through… if a scene in this book was going to make me cry (well, two scenes) it’s Taar’s.

We get the a few new POV as well here, basically because a cast member wasn’t available for awhile during the story (don’t worry about it, you’ll understand when you get there) and we couldn’t just out on Ilsevel as our girl can’t be everywhere at once! I liked the fresh new viewpoints, especially as it humanizes a few people we haven’t had a lot of insight on. I wouldn’t have minded one for Kilgorath - just so I could figure out just how h justified his choices- but I guess that’s suitably covered in other ways.

All-in-all it was a fun read and I would recommend the series to anyone who likes Romantasy with a bit of spice. Oh, and thank you to the author for confirming if a character is dead or alive (somewhat) and for also including Lyria (which was unexpected). Personally, I hated Lyria in the Shadow King trilogy. Here she may be a teensy bit warmer, but it’s obvious she once had love for Ilsevel and actually seems to care for her half-sisters in various forms. The teaser that Lyria may have her own series of books in the future has me hoping (shocker!) it actually happens.

Can a heart break while reading a book? Not literally, but emotionally, most definitely! I knew my heart would be broken repeatedly in SoulFire, but I was quite literally gutted at times. Oh the emotions that this book wrung from the very depths of my soul! The tears flowed freely on more than one occasion, but I loved every tear-filled moment of it! Sylvia Mercedes writes such deeply emotional books. Books which bring so much life and depth and emotion to her characters while maintaining a captivating storyline. Books which take the reader on a journey alongside the characters. Books which make me feel everything. I will happily read this series over and over.

I'm not honestly sure that my little review can give the proper justice to my love for SoulFire. Parts of this book had me on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding while other parts left me in tears. But, above all, was the undeniable pure enjoyment from reading it.

A heartbreakingly beautiful, breath-holding, nail-biting, action-packed, completely swoon-worthy fantasy romance that sung a broken melody to the deepest parts of my heart and melded a lyrical harmony that lasted til the very last word. SoulFire is packed with emotion: protectiveness, fear, sacrifice, sorrow, brokenness, resolve, strength, determination, redemption, trust, hope, an undeniable love for the ages, and so much more.

Taar's & Ilsevel's story is so beautifully written with deeply emotional relationship scenes that appeal to the very heart of the reader, and the epic conclusion to the overall storyline is perfection in words. Their chemistry throughout the entire series has been woven in the stars.

This is the final book in the Warbride Quartet and wow what a magnificent ending it is. Taar has gutted Ilsevel his mortal wife, whilst under the influence of the evil Virulium, and he knows he has to go in search of her and beg forgiveness. He decides to leave his own people at their direst moment, and riding on Elydark his licorneir, he travels through the world gate into the mortal world towards the castle of his mortal enemy King Larongar, Ilsevel’s father. She is about to be married off once again to Artoris, a miphato, however with help Taar steals her away, and they travel back to Cruor, his own land. There both of them face off his people who are angry and shouting for the blood of both of them. Kildoreth, the brother of Shanaera, once betrothed to Taar and out for vengeance, turns their people against Tarr, and she comes with an army of undead, shamblers bought to ‘life’ by Morthiel, the miphato who is behind all the troubles of the Licornyn people, due to the rift that he opened together with King Thalor, Taar’s very own father. This book is a turmoil of emotions, Ms Mercedes fills us with hope, and then plunges us to despair, as we see our fated mates struggle against his own people, who little realise that she is their only means of salvation. This is a very powerful quartet full of magic both beautiful in the form of the licorneir, and dark and evil in the form of the necromancers and the undead. Our couple started out as enemies who then became fated mates, with a bond of love so strong that not even death could diminish it. It is a series which cannot be missed by lovers of fantasy romance with these type of tropes.

Sylvia does an incredible job, as always, developing such beautiful prose. Her writing style has a lyrical, almost poetic quality to it. It is smooth, evocative, and truly pulls at your heart. For writing and creativity alone, she easily earns five stars.

Where I found myself a little disappointed was in how the story sometimes felt like it was repeating itself. After so much progress in earlier books, parts of the plot here felt like taking a hundred steps back, which became a bit frustrating at times. I also struggled with how much Ilsevel was rejected by Taars people and how constantly she (And Taar and his sister) had to prove themselves, while Kildorath seemed to step into authority much more easily.

The story also felt somewhat drawn out toward the end. I caught myself skim reading a few pages here and there during some of the intense battle scenes, as they didn’t grab my interest as much as earlier books.

That said, the book still delivers a HEA, and it was beautiful to see Ilsevel finally come into her full abilities, in a way that many readers probably saw coming. I personally wished there were a few more moments of peace and solace between the FMC and MMC, since much of the book leaned heavily into angst and constant challenges, but that may just be a personal preference.

As with the other books in this series, the plot, prose, overall atmosphere, and writing style remain brilliant. Sylvia’s storytelling is unique, immersive, and refreshing. There are also still a few loose ends, particularly concerning Ilsevel’s family, and I am curious whether the author plans to tie those threads together in future books.

Separated from each other, in pain and brokenhearted, Ilsevel and Taar still have a bond that conquers all. Their love story over the course of four books had complex ups and downs, and serious heat. Ilsevel’s gods-gift of song was a beautiful power, especially when she interacted with Mahra. I enjoyed the addition of Tassa’s POV in this book, and the evolution of her character and love story.

Each book in series was 4 stars for me, overall a well-paced quartet with unique song magic in a strongly developed world and an incredible message of the strength and power of love and grief. What kept me from rating any book higher was the imbalance of dark and light. Each installment had relatable conflicts which resulted in physical wounds, heartbreak, despair and failure, but there was little hope or success to celebrate. The ultimate resolution in the last third of this book was immensely satisfying, but each book in series consistently travelled a dark painful road and I would have enjoyed more small plot details that showed them taking steps forward in their goals, forging allies, winning against their foes in small ways, seeing hope for success, etc., instead of hit after hit pummeling the MCs until the end of book four. For me, this was a tale of immense pain and struggle for the two lovers, and I wished for more balance of small wins and setbacks over the course of the series.

Mercedes is an auto-buy author for me, for each series contains unique world-building, complex and relatable characters, and delicious romance—and I Iook forward to her next release!

🦄🔥Soulfire by Sylvia Mercedes🔥🦄

🦄This is the fourth and final book in the WarBride series, and I know four books can seem like a lot but trust me, you will fly through these because there is so much action! 🔥

🦄This was the perfect ending to this series, I literally could not have asked for more! We have so many satisfying moments, some plot lines that built throughout the series, and something I was reeeeeally hoping for actually made me cheer when it happened (actually more than once🤭)! 🔥

🦄The central romance in this series is just so beautiful! I love it when the big strong warlord is brought to his knees by a woman. Taar just loves everything about Ilsevel, in spite of her prickly exterior. He was patient enough to work his way into her heart and once Ilsevel loves someone, she won’t let go. And boy did they have to go through a lot for their HEA! 🔥

Thank you so much to the author and Luna Blooms for the review copy! You made my month with this one! After CurseBound I was actually suffering, wandering the halls like a Victorian ghost, unable to pick up other books. I read this as soon as it hit my inbox 😆 I am so so grateful!

❓QotD: If you could turn any book into a movie, which would it be?

🫖 I paired this book with traditional rooibos from Murchie’s tea. I wanted to give a nod to the many traditions and rituals of the Licornyn people, like the formation of the velra bond that started this whole adventure! It’s been so fun!

***possible spoilers ahead***

So rarely do books render me absolutely speechless! Taar and Ilsevel’s story has finally come to an end, and in the best way possible. I could not have asked for a better conclusion to one of my absolute favorite romances. Weaving unicorns with song, life and death - everything about this series is just so unique and refreshing. I did have one gripe with this book, and that was how quickly forgiveness happened. I feel like with the dramatic way that the last chapters of CurseBound unfolded, that the conflict between Ilsevel and Taar was wrapped up too neatly - I feel that she deserved to be upset with what happened, considering what she suffered. I know the conflict occurred because of undue influence, but I still feel there should have been a little more tension there! And in the later chapters at the citadel, I feel that Taar forgave a certain someone too quickly as well. Tessa and Halamar’s reconciliation was a good example of what I mean - before they are taken from their prison. But this grip was minor and I still believe this book deserves no less than a 5 star rating! I would rate it more, if Amazon would allow it!

The romantic tension, banter (I’m not kissing you, Taar - I was laughing so hard), and battles were a masterclass in writing. Even though the WarBride quartet has been finished, I find myself needing more!!

I received an advanced copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is my honest review.

On the day I read SoulFire, no dishes were washed, and no food was prepared. No work was accomplished either (good thing I'm my own boss). Because I simply could not put down the story of Taar and Ilsevel. I had questions, so many questions. What will happen next? How will she/he escape? How? What? All the questions!

Sylvia Mercedes could teach a Masterclass on how to write a compelling novel.

I'm a harsh critic, so I'm not just writing words to make the author feel good. There are highs and lows in the book, and well as points where I thought the author had written the characters into corners they never could possibly escape from (hello, death!). And yet, Taar and Ilsevel escaped to live another adventure, all without the use of deus ex machina.

The FMC and MMC were well written, likable but still flawed. There are no Mary Sues or Marty Stus here. The dialogue was believable. The love was not instant; instead, readers are given a view of two complicated people falling into a love deep enough to (realistically) overcome anything.

I highly recommend this book... well, this whole series... to anyone who enjoys an exciting read. Ms. Mercedes, I cannot wait for your next book!

As some may know, I have read all of Sylvia's books. I will say that SoulFire is her absolute masterpiece! This book is important on so many levels. You have the story of Taar and Ilsevel, expanded and revealed as never before. I have only cried one other time while reading a work of Sylvia's, and the intense emotion of this book generated tears. Ilsevel appears at first as the headstrong princess returned to her home, but of course her father has plans for her. As she escapes again, the emotions grow to another level, an otherworldly plain, and you marvel at how Sylvia puts words to these deep feelings and experiences. Of course, Ilsevel's bond with the licorneir plays a pivotal role. There is the darkest villain who intensifies in villainy and betrayal on the darkest level.
I can't say more about Taar-you need the experience I had, but keep the tissues handy. He's always been a rock of loyalty and self-sacrifice. After reading this, I don't know what can possibly top it for the intensity and feelings it evokes!

🌶️/ spice rating

A fabulous end to a wonderful series. Is this perfect? No but did I enjoy myself? Yes I really fucking did. This book is packed with so many fun tropes and some surprising tropes too that caught me off guard. I knew this book was going to start out in the aftermath of the events of CurseBound and it was so painful reading both MC’s POVs. I found myself hooked in from the word go and found it hard to put my kindle down. I cannot really say much else without spoiling the other books in this series but what I can say is that I’m glad I stumbled across this author. These book are definitely for those who love fantasy forward books with a romance subplot. I’m definitely going to miss these characters a lot and now I look forward to what Sylvia Mercedes has to offer us next.

A fitting conclusion

This is the last book in the Warbride quartet and brings Taar and Ilsevel's story to its conclusion. Taar is still at the top of my list of favourite MMCs. The polar opposite to the toxic masculinity we are surrounded with right now. This shining example of maturity, honour, passion and deep love can at least live rent free in my head. Ilsevel truly finds herself in this book, finally breaking free of those chains built by the men who control them, intent on saving the only one who recognizes her power and revels in it. Such a beautiful conclusion is leaving some doors open for further spinoffs. There are two more sisters still waiting for their stories to be told, soon I hope.

Thank you for the ARC!!
It was so exciting to read the final instalment of such a great fantasy series and as always, Sylvia did an incredible job of developing a magical world with great characters that I was in no rush to leave.
It was an adventurous, evocative and romantic read that pulled at my heartstrings. I loved how this series entwined with her other series and it's so great seeing Sylvia as an author be able to build such a wonderful universe for her stories to flourish in.
The final book finishes this story perfectly (spoiler alert - HEA!) and if you have loved the series so far, this book will complete it the way you need it to although I have to say I'm sad it is over!
Can't wait to see what Sylvia has in store for us next.

A stunning conclusion to the story of Ilsevel and Taar. I was enthralled from start to finish. Their sheer tenacity to find one another again and again. I will forever adore the way in which Taar truly sees Ilsevel. To him, she is strong and brave. I love the relationship between Ilsevel and Elydark as well. They are two of the most important beings in Taar's life, and they love one another because of that. I was happy to see some of my least favorite characters get what they deserve. There was also a wee bit of redemption for one of the characters I dislike immensely. Getting to meet and know one of Ilsevel's other family members was great, too! I really hope that we get to see more of her and a certain presumed-dead sister. I loved this series so much. It has a part of my heart, just like The Bride of the Shadow King series.

This book lead me on a wild ride. I must admit that there was a good chunk of the story, where it got bleak enough that I couldn't imagine how it was possible to come to a satisfying ending.

But the surprising twists and turns were well worth my time. I love the world, characters, plot, and steamy romance of Taar and Ilsevel's story.

Although this series is complete, I'm hoping to see more set in this world.

An absolutely beautiful and gut-wrenching end to an awesome series. I loved the ending! I cried during this book, so freaking much. It certainly tugged the heartstrings. But it was beautifully written. The action was superb. Taar and Ilsevel is my new favorite couple! I loved the trials they went through and the fact that in the end, love conquers all. I'm also a sucker for second changes and this book was full of them.

I loved this book! I loved Ilsevel and Taar’s final book!! I loved their happily ever after so much!! They went through so much and defeated so many evils to get there. They truly deserved their happiness together in the end. A lot of wrongs were righted in this book and Taar’s people found peace and happiness again. I will miss Taar and Ilsevel so much, but I know we have Aurae and Lyria’s books to come, too. It will be so nice to see them all happy at the very end.

What an ending. Seriously, I wasn't sure how everything was going to work out in the end, but it all fit together, leaving enough questions for another book series.

I definitely guessed one of the major things that came to fruition in this novel, but a few were unexpected. And the end was beautiful, enough to give hope for the future beyond the scope of the novel without restricting what could be.

Deep, detailed and immersive. loved it!

What an amazingly talented writer! This series goes beyond the typical tropes and gratuitous sex it has steam but also healing, spirituality, and wisdom I haven’t seen in a while. Very detailed storyline, character development and world building. Ms Mercedes is an impressive writer! One of the best romantic fantasies I’ve read. And I read them constantly!

Saved the best for last

There could not be a more powerful conclusion to the Warbride quartet. Absolute perfection. And that’s not to say that it was an easy ride there. Quite the contrary. Ilsevel and Taar had to fight every inch of the way to get back to each other and faced obstacles no one should have to face. But they achieved the unattainable. The first three books were excellent, but the author truly saved the best for last.

Soulfire

I was anxiously waiting for this 4th and final book in the Warbride series and I really enjoyed it. There is a lot more trauma in this book but thankfully also some redemption to help even it out. I’m not sure which series I enjoyed more this or the shadow king. I am hoping there will be another interconnected story containing the other 2 sisters 🤞🏻

Not quite sure how to summarize this. A whole lot of shit happens and I found the conclusion rather chaotic. Evil that had been perpetrated for years is vanquished in a relatively short time. The purpose of Ilsevel’s god given gift is revealed. All of the bad guys get their just desserts. Taar and Ilsevel get their HEA. The kingdom is healed.
