It was a real treat to read another of Debbie’s books, and to rediscover her knack for well-timed comedy. I didn’t read the first book in this series, but that didn’t spoil my enjoyment, as the characters were all introduced perfectly, so I never felt lost.
Jen is an excellent leading lady, and I immediately took to her. As the synopsis explains, she is a recent widow with two children, preparing to move on and leave the family nest. The nest is a statement property which feels far too big for Jen to rattle around in by herself. She had always taken great pride in maintaining standards in domesticity, but she is now underwhelmed at the idea of spending her days doing all that, just for herself. Despite losing her husband, she hadn’t lost her spark, and as she joins with the Starlight Society, the fun begins.
The rest of the society is a hilarious mixture of women from all backgrounds, who team together in a bid to save the local Village Hall from the hands of a local property developer with his plans to build a luxury hotel.
The property developer himself, Liam Lancaster, oozes romantic lead, and undoubtedly causes conflict for Jen as she really wants to dislike him. Still, the sight of him leads her to have thoughts that are not suitable for a widow. The narrative follows Jen, so the outcome is difficult to guess, but it is delivered perfectly.
I read this book over a couple of nights with a smile on my face. I will try not to leave it as long before downloading another book from this author.
