Axel Devereaux: a dark college romcom series

Rate this book
Pre-order now! Coming March 2026!

This series will become darker, kinkier, and funnier with each book. See it as a dark romance with each book, you delve deeper into the darkness, but with some humor and smut in the mix.

Axel

The moment she crashes into my life, I’m fucked.
I know I shouldn’t crave the girl my sister loved—the girl who’s gone through so much abuse, she’ll never want to be touched by a man again.
But I can’t stop wanting her.
She thinks she’s broken, shattered, scarred beyond repair.
I see her as strong, brave, gorgeous… and mine.
It’s not just guilt holding me back—it’s the monster lurking in my pants, the reason why I’m still a virgin at twenty-two.
She’s a girl built on secrets, and when I uncover the truth?
I’ll prove she’s worthy of love, even if I have to fight every demon in her past to make her believe it.
And when her nightmares bleed into our reality, I’ll hunt down every goddamn monster who ever touched her.

Even if it means becoming one myself.

Carmen
The moment I’m rescued, I become fucked on a whole other level.
And it’s all because of Axel Devereaux—the golden boy with a heart too big and a body made to sin… the twin brother of my dead ex-girlfriend.
He thinks he’s saving me, but he doesn’t know what saving costs.
I’m not the girl he believes I am—I’ve got secrets he’ll hate me for.
I’m tainted, damaged, a patchwork of scars and sin stitched together by survival.
Yet every time he looks at me, I start to wonder if maybe I’m still worthy of love.
He’s gentle when I need it, filthy when I beg for it, and dangerous enough to destroy me completely.
Falling for him means breaking every promise I made to the ghosts of my past—and I always keep my promises.
So if I have to become a monster to protect him from the hell that follows me.

Then I’ll gladly kill them all.

This is book four in the series, and it starts right where book three ended. You could read it as a standalone, but I promise you'll enjoy it way more if you read them in order.

Extra warning!

Axel Devereaux is significantly darker and more emotionally intense than the previous books in the series.
This story delves deep into trauma, healing, and survival—and includes graphic, explicit, and potentially triggering scenes.
Please take the time to read the full list of trigger warnings before starting this book.
It contains depictions of sexual violence, abuse, trauma responses, PTSD, stillbirth, and psychological manipulation, as well as detailed explicit sexual content that may be distressing to some readers.
While this book ultimately explores love, trust, and recovery, it does not shy away from showing the darkness that comes before the light.
If you’ve experienced trauma or find such content difficult to read, please proceed with care. Your mental health and comfort come first. 💛

About the author

Marissa Markx

8 books45 followers
Marissa Markx writes spicy, chaotic, and sometimes uncomfortably funny romances where trauma meets temptation—and where no kink is too weird to play with. Her books are dark, emotional, and full of morally grey men, strong heroines, and the kind of found family you wish you could crash a party with (badass granny included).

When she’s not writing, Marissa can usually be found plotting new ways to torture her characters, laughing at her own jokes, or cuddling dogs who definitely think they’re the real stars of her books.

If you like your romance messy, bold, and with a side of “wait, did she really just write that?”—welcome to her world.

I have only read Dean from this series but I’m loving all the couples! This one was a lot darker but man it is spicy!

Please make sure to read trigger warnings as this is trauma healing.

Axel fucking Devereux 😍🤯the man you are❤️‍🔥

Ok let’s start with the rating 5⭐️
That is all you need to know😂😍
It was an absolute honour to ready your book and being a member of your arc team🙏🙏

But ok let’s talk about this book and what a fucking emotional rollercoaster it was.
You really have to check the trigger warnings because this book is really dark it had me shocked so many times. It deals with being a victim of human trafficking and the consequences of what this can do to a person and the things she needs to do to survive. This that she is not proud.

Carmen omg her story broke my heart and i am sending her so many hugs. I can even explain to you how much i loved her and wanted her to stop hurting. She is such a strong character and i found it really interesting to see her taking control of her life again and trying all over again.
Axel on the other hand lost his sister. He couldn’t save her like they did Carmen and this broke my heart. He had to go through so many emotions because of his sister lost . His dad was a cruel one sometimes that added to his picture of himself.

Let’s go to the love part of the book. Carmen and Axel are really so adorable together. They help each other so much and they will burn the world down for each other. Their chemistry was over the moon and their love story came so naturally and not forced something i really loved and appreciated.
The spicy scenes were so well written and the importance of wait because of what they both being through was so important. ( Axel my boy was a virgin, if you want to find out why go check the art print in @marissamarkx account)
The found family was something i really loved in this book. How they hugged Carmen into their little weird family was so cute and wholesome 🥰

The cliffhanger in the end omg 🤯🤯i did not show that coming

Oh Axel, the MAN that you are!

This book was the darkest and spiciest on the series so far. I had SO many emotions while reading the book. I fell in love, I smiled, I cried like a baby and I swooned, of course.

Carmen was amazing, resilient, broken and she had so much to deal with, yet she found the strength to go forward and find love. Inspiring as hell!

Axel, well.. we already knew he was a little bit damaged and a very wholesome man, but here we see him truly shine.

And the spice?? Excuse me Marissa, we should have a little talk. You can’t ruin men for me with these high expectations, how can I read about others now? Lol

I can’t wait to get Maxwell’s story next, I can hardly shut up about this series, EVERY couple was amazing so far.

I recommend this author to any dark romance and contemporary romance readers.

*CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS*

When I first got my hands on this ARC I was super excited to start it right away. I had been wanting to know more about Axel and Carmen after the cliffhanger from the previous book. Now I am one that doesn’t have many triggers however with this one I did have to stop and take breaks🥺. I started on February 16 and didn’t finish it until March 21. This story is very raw and heartbreaking. 😭 Carmen went through a lot and I love how patient and understanding Axel is her. The way he worked with her to make sure she knew she wasn’t alone in this🥹. While yes this book does have its darkness to it , we do have some funny moments aswell and the way Axel was such a good boy for Carmen 🤭😏.

I absolutely cannot wait for the next book because of course it wouldn’t be a Marissa Markx book without a cliffhanger !!! 🫣🤭

Marissa really nailed it with Axel! If you’re in the mood for laughs, some revenge, steamy scenes, or just something to make you cry, this is the book for you!

This book is honestly my favorite in the series, and I was expecting Dean to be my favorite. But Axel and Carmen will steal your heart, and you’ll never want them to go.

I was so heartbroken for Carmen, and I have receipts to prove it—I was a mess! This book was the perfect escape for me. It’s definitely stuck in my head, full of all the emotional turmoil I went through. Axel was the gentle reminder that there’s kindness in the world. The way he protects and calms Carmen during her episodes is so beautiful. He’s her rock. He doesn’t have to fight, but he soothes her in a way we all wish to be soothed. I will forever an A&C girly.

Wow. This book took us through it. This was dark dark, and emotional, and really brought out all the feelings. I cried, I looked away in horror, I giggled, and I loved it. These characters have put themselves on the line, and are coming through vulnerable, but also stronger and just out for vengeance. Axel is a consent king, and I love him for it! He is exactly what was needed in this situation. Carmen has had to be tough for so long, its no wonder she is untrusting and cautious, but she shows us what it's like to be fearless as well. This book now has a piece of my heart with it!

This book is NOT for the faint at heart. Book 4 in 'The Assignment' series, the author said it'd get darker with each book and she certainly delivered on that promise. I've been reading since book 1 and I even re-read all of them to refresh myself on everything before reading this. I usually finish a book this length in under 3 days, but I paced myself with this one. This is a true DARK romance with very dark and somewhat disturbing themes in it...so please check the trigger warnings. I really enjoyed this book, Carmen and Axel are a beautifully tragic couple. I've read some pretty dark books and mangas before, but Carmen is one of the most tragic and traumatized FMCs that I've read to date. Her and Tracy are honestly both survivors, Carmen more-so but it wouldn't be fair to compare their traumas anyway. Granted, it did take a bit for Carmen to let down her walls and start to trust anyone, let alone let Axel love her how she deserved to be loved; which considering what she survived is highly understandable. Axel continued with being present and with someone like Dean being his best friend...he's used to being pushed away by someone he cares about because they're scared and find being vulnerable incredibly difficult.
As much as this book made my heart ache at times, it made me smile, giggle, laugh, and kick my feet just as much. Shout out to my favorite girl, PomPom, cuze she was still on the same mess from the last book and I loved every second 😅. Since book 1, Axel always struck me as a giant sweetheart and consent king (glad to know I was right ☺️). Also bonus points for not only lowkey having B.D.E (Big Dick Energy) but also living up to that energy.....iykyk 😏. Also, I appreciated how even though Axel was a big 🍆 virgin, he was still knew what to do during spicy time. That's one thing I can't stand whenever there is an inexperienced character, they're sometimes written to be completely ill-informed or oblivious on all things sex-related. So Axel being written differently and made to be familiar with everything, just his "virginity" stemming from no one being able to accommodate his size was a nice touch!
Like Cane, I'd consider Axel to be the other unhinged golden retriever out of the guys, King and Dean obviously being Doberman-coded and I'm still contemplating how to classify Maxwell 🤔(mother hen, himself 😂). But don't be fooled, Axel is definitely a kind soul but he absolutely did not play when it came to Carmen and their friends, their found family dynamic with this insane gang of misfits never ceases to put a smile on my face. Can't wait to read book 5 because I know it's gonna be more unhinged, spicier, longer, and overall wild ride. NO MORE cliffhangers tho, please...my heart can't take it!! 😭

Holy darkness Batman!! This is definitely in the top 3 darkest books I’ve read!! And with certain “files” being released recently it’s even harder hitting, there were times I had to take a break or cried. That being said, there were plenty of times I was belly laughing while reading this book also! Axel is definitely a “good boy” throughout the whole series cursed (or gifted depending on how you see it) with manhood so large that he’s still a virgin at 22. He accepts it putting all his focus into school, helping Tracy/Valentina’s sister, Carmen, who they were able to finally rescue from s*x slavery, and avenging his twin sister Lois, who was taken by the same organization and murdered. Carmen survived a living h*ll for the past 7 years. Beaten, s*xually abused, forced to abuse others, electrocuted, and broken without proper medical treatment. She’s cursed by nightmares, both asleep and awake and the only one who’s been able to help her is Axel. She knew his sister, they helped each other survive their circumstances, but she’s plagued by her inability to save Lois’s life. Carmen is slowly able to trust her group of savers and accept their help in various ways in order to help herself, take out the entire s*x slave ring, and save the other girls as they all promised. She learns to trust Axel, feel completely safe and comfortable around a man for the first time in 7 years. Axel’s caring, calm nature helps soothe her in a way no one else has been able to since she lost Lois, although a bit of Granddaddy Purple helps. Carmen begins to feel for Axel in a way she never thought she’d feel for a man again. Both want the other but their insecurities about their bodies hold them back. When the group is forced to leave the states and go into hiding the flame that began between Axel and Carmen turns into an inferno!! He helps her work through her list of fears as they learn more about each other and themselves. The ring is discovered, chaos ensues and the only real way to explain it all is; boom, boom, baby!! The book has a fantastic ending, but there’s still a cliffhanger for Maxwell’s book and I definitely look forward to reading it!!!!!
DEFINITELY CHECK YOUR TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!

When this series tells you that each book will get funnier but also darker, Marissa didn’t lie. Although each book follows a different couple’s beginnings, the other characters are heavily involved in each other’s stories as secondary characters. Skipping books definitely isn’t recommended or you’ll miss a LOT of background information, especially since this one continues immediately after the events of book 3, which left us with a massive cliffhanger. And well… be prepared, because the cliffhanger at the end of this one will once again have you messaging the author with "WHY!!!! I NEED MAXWELL’S BOOK NOW!" (expected October 2026?!)

I often find in interconnected series that characters from previous books only appear as quick glimpses of their personalities and aren’t super crucial to the current story. But I have to applaud Marissa’s writing here. The previous main characters—now secondary ones—remain incredibly important to the plot and TRULY continue to embody their personalities throughout every book. So much so that there isn’t a single scene with any of them that I don’t love. Certain characters especially bring the kind of eye-rolling, grinning laughter that makes the series so addictive.

Now, I did mention that this one gets darker. Throughout the series, one of the major subplots involves the trafficking ring responsible for Axel’s twin sister’s death and the disappearance of Valentina’s sister. The main bulk of that nightmare unfolds in this book. It becomes highly emotional and absolutely vice-grips your heart with pain as you read. There are moments of humor sprinkled throughout to let you breathe between the heavier scenes, but the humor never makes light of the events. There are also some beautiful healing elements woven into the story that were wonderful to see.

Did I cry big fat emotional tears? YUP.
Did I also laugh so hard I cried? Also yup.

This is easily one of my favorite series ever, and I will continue recommending it over and over again.

Axel might honestly be my favorite character in this series so far. I’ve only read Dean before picking this one up, but I’m already completely hooked on this world and the couples in it. Each relationship feels unique, and I love seeing how the characters’ stories connect while still standing strong on their own.

This book definitely takes a darker turn compared to what I expected, but in the best way. The emotional depth was intense, and the story leans heavily into trauma, healing, and personal growth. Because of that, I’d strongly recommend checking the trigger warnings before diving in. The author doesn’t shy away from difficult topics, but they’re handled in a way that really highlights the characters’ strength and resilience.

Axel completely stole the show for me. There’s just something about his character that made him stand out, and I found myself rooting for him the entire time. His story had so many layers. Pain, vulnerability, and passion and it made the emotional payoff even more satisfying.

And let’s talk about the spice😈🥵. This book definitely brings the heat. The chemistry between the characters was undeniable and added so much intensity to the story. It balanced the darker themes with moments that were both emotional and incredibly steamy.

The ending, though! That cliffhanger has me desperate for the next book. I need to know what happens next, and I’m already counting down until I can get my hands on it. If the rest of the series keeps delivering like this, I’m going to be completely obsessed.
Overall, if you enjoy darker romance with emotional depth, strong character development, and plenty of spice, this one is definitely worth the read.

Listen… I LOVE the Assignment series. I own the whole thing, so the second I saw this was up for grabs?? Immediate yes. No hesitation.

And whew… this one??
This was a spicier, darker, emotionally heavier meatball than the rest—and I ate it UP.

Please check triggers going in, because Carmen’s story is not light. She has been through it in ways that sit heavy, and this book does not shy away from that. But what I appreciated most is that the healing is just as present as the darkness.

Carmen absolutely broke my heart. The way she views herself, the way trauma has shaped her reactions, her guilt, her fear… it all felt very real and raw.

And Axel?? 🥹
He was EVERYTHING she needed.

Patient. Gentle. Understanding.
But also?? That man can flip a switch real quick 🤭😏

The way he worked with her, not against her… the way he made sure she knew she wasn’t alone, that she had control, that she was safe??
Yeah. That got me.

He never rushed her healing, never forced anything—he earned every step forward with her, and that made their connection feel so much deeper.

And I loved that despite how dark this story gets, there are still moments of humor and softness sprinkled in. It gives you just enough breath before pulling you back under.

Also… Axel being an absolute good boy for Carmen??
Say less. I’m sat.

This book leans heavier into:

trauma & recovery
trust and reclaiming control
protective, “I will burn the world for you” energy
and a deeper descent into the darker tone of the series

It’s intense. It’s emotional. It’s spicy.
But at its core, it’s about healing and being seen.

Axel’s book really caught me in the super feels. There were plenty of lol moments, but this one … MAN! This one pulled me in/made me feel everything much, much deeper. I read all 480+ pages in one sitting—didn’t mean to. My Mr. left for work, I started reading Axel’s story, my Mr. walked through the door, I asked if he forgot his work I.D. again, he said, “Ahh, that good? I want to read it next.” and started laughing. That’s when I realized he had worked his entire shift and I hadn’t moved an inch.

So, yeah, it’s THAT good.

I needed tissues. Whew. Got slightly tomato faced. I’m not a pretty crier. Ugh. There were a LOT of questions answered, a prediction I made with book 3 was right—yes, I am a shameless gloat. Axel Devereaux has lots of bodies dropping, Cane antics, solidarity, so much sexy time, tons of trauma and healing. Last, but not least, that darn CLIFF!

Oh my goodness, I loved Axel Devereaux by Marissa Marx! This book hit all the marks for me—dark, romantic, spicy, and thrilling. If you love a story that makes your heart race and keeps you turning pages, this is it.

Yes, there are some incredibly dark themes (and honestly, they add so much depth to the story—if it feels heavy, you could skip the italic portions, but I highly recommend giving them a try), but it’s handled so well that it pulls you in instead of pushing you away.

Axel—oh, Axel. I fell hard for him. He’s caring, patient, and understanding, but when his dominant and protective side comes out…holy smokes, it is hot! The chemistry between Axel and Carmen (or Carmelita, as I secretly love calling her!) is off the charts, and their character growth throughout the book is so satisfying. Plus, fans of the series will love seeing familiar characters from the previous books and how their stories continue to unfold.

I also have to admit—the spicy scenes had me running to my husband to re-enact! This book isn’t just a story; it’s an experience.

If you love intense romance with a mix of suspense, dark themes, and steamy chemistry, Axel Devereaux is perfect for you. Fans of Marissa Marx’s previous works or anyone who enjoys a romance that’s equal parts thrilling and sizzling will devour this book.

I honestly cannot say enough good things—this book is an absolute must-read!

The anticipation, the wait, the excitement when I saw this was ready… there are no words. I told my family they were on their own. I was completely enthralled by this sinfully dark romantic tale, just like the previous ones in this series, from the first page to the last. I warn you, this book has some brutally sharp teeth, and it is not one bit afraid of using them. This book does have trigger warnings and is NOT FOR EVERYONE, and you really need to keep that in mind as things get very graphic and intense. For me, I thought this was a truly incredible book and I absolutely loved it!! I knew by the end of the first chapter that this book would have me on the edge of my seat and boy, I was right! I didn't expect the twists and turns that awaited me! So many brutal, traumatizing, and painful experiences presented in a way that is eye-opening and hard-hitting. You will cry, rage, want to provide comfort and be just as eager to see revenge rained down upon those that deserve it. The emotions are raw, the feelings monumental and the characters’ bonds unforgettable. There is sizzling, scorching, blazing heat, but there is also a soul deep stunning amount of heart. It's a beautifully written story of healing! Oh, Maxwell, your story isn’t going to get here soon enough.

OH. M. GEE!

I am obsessed with this book and series. This is one of the best dark rom-com series I've read. It's well paced, has excellently timed humor, amazing characters, and a thrilling plot that just kept me captivated and devouring pages. This group of unhinged friends are pure mayhem and chaos. They live rent-free in my mind. The banter between them alone is pure gold and made me laugh out loud. And once again, the hilarious chapter titles are so fun.

But dont get it twisted for one second because between all the laughter and crazy this is still a dark emotional wreck of your heart and put it back together, a story that will get you to shed tears.

Axel is officially my favorite by far!
Carmen is such a BA amazingly resilient FMC through all the awful things she endured she rises above and is so strong. Axel and Carmen just fit together. They may have trauma bonded big time, but they are exactly what the other needs and oooooffff they are so HOT together.

I can't wait to get my hands on the final book in this amazing series after the cliffhanger. I'm looking forward to Maxwell's story. It will be bittersweet when it all ends, that's for sure!

This is probably one of the best books I have read in a while. Dark, angsty, compelling, tragic, yet filled with humor, spice, and two fascinating MCs. Be sure to check your triggers before you start reading as it deals with dark themes and very deatiled scenes.

I am not going to give much more than what is in the blurb, as I think this is a book that needs to be read completely to understand the depth of hurt/pain/loss/trauma that has shaped both the MCs lives. They are both misunderstood and secretive. For Axel, his blessing/curse has set him to secrecy, loneliness in order to avoid gossip or bad comments. For Carmen, a tough/life of the party persona is the mask that hides her continuos pain.

They start the relationship as roommates, he sees her pain and tries to help heal, and she sees his soft demeanor and uses it as balm for her nightmares. THey slowly escalate to friends as he starts to protect her and get more in depth of her story. THeir twin stories is like share trauma that brings them closer each time. Their passion is electric and their love healing and caring. The spice is off the charts and so well expressed

So much to read in this book that will break your heart and have you laughing in the next paragraph,.

Marissa Markx levels up the feels in each new Assignment Series book.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ /🌶🌶🌶

I'll tell ya what, she put me through the gamut of emotions in Axel and Carmen's story. I hated it. I loved it. It was shocking, action packed, and also exciting! I laughed out loud so many times. How do you go from experiencing something so traumatic and devistating to finding joy and heart warming friendship AND love???

After YEARS of suffering, Carmen staged her own rescue from the flesh trade. And through it, found her new family in a pack of vigilante friends. (And her sister!!)

Axel 😍 I just love him. A bit different from our previous grumpy, intimidating, and somewhat detached MC's in the series. He really is the lover and fixer of the group. He is the perfect match for what our girl needs. He goes through his own personal challenges growing up with a father having very narrow views on what makes a man a man. Carmen meets him right where he is and what he's working to overcome. As he does for her.

Also, she nicknames him Hummer and I think it's the best nickname in any book I've read!! 😆😍

Another amazing journey in the Assignment Series. In true MM fashion, we are left reeling for the next book! Axel is book 4 in the series and the series should be read in order.

There are stories that feel like a quiet confession, and Axel Devereaux is one of them.

Marissa Markx writes Carmen with a tenderness that lingers. She is a woman shaped by survival, carrying the weight of what was done to her, convinced she has been marked by the darkness she endured. Her past clings to her like a shadow she cannot shake.

And then Axel steps into that shadow with a kind of gentle certainty.

There is something almost reverent in the way he sees her. Not as broken. Not as ruined. As brave. As luminous. As someone still worthy of softness. He becomes the calm she did not know she could lean into, the steady warmth that teaches her how to breathe again. Their connection hums with quiet intensity, the kind of closeness that feels like a heartbeat pressed against another.

The thread of Lois, the grief and the loss and the echo of shared pain, binds them in a way that feels fragile and fated all at once.

This book is not just romance. It is healing written in soft strokes. It is devotion spoken in whispers. It is two survivors learning how to exist in the same light.

I love this book. I love this series. Marissa Markx writes with a quiet fire that stays with you long after the last page.

Disclaimer to my review:
I feel like I need to put this in here before I tell you my opinion. This book will not be for everyone. It hits a rough topic of human trafficking and the author does not shy away from the horror and details that come with it. At times I had to put it down and walk away. It took me over a week to get through this book which is irregular for me because two days is usually my longest for this length of a story. There are other details that are equally graphic. Without going into detail I just thought you should know.

My Review:
I’m a huge fan of this author. Her no holds barred for tough topics and her writing style keeps me coming back for more. Axel really shines in his story. We see the man he is and who he becomes when faced with trauma. His own and someone he loves. Carmen is truly a survivor. Learning how to forgive herself is just the tip of the iceberg as she struggles to overcome her horrific past. Learning that the past doesn’t define us really makes this a fantastic read.

"Axel Devereaux" truly stands out as the most intense and deeply affecting novel in The Assignment series, and I must emphasize the importance of thoroughly reviewing the provided trigger warnings before diving into this compelling narrative. Carmen's story unfolds with brutal honesty, delving into heartbreaking and raw experiences stemming from a period of trauma that spans seven years, unflinchingly portraying the harsh realities she faces. Having said that, amidst the difficult circumstances, Marissa Markx demonstrates exceptional sensitivity, respect, and deliberate care in portraying Carmen's journey toward healing. The author's ability to navigate complex and challenging themes is truly remarkable, resulting in a poignant exploration of resilience, self-discovery, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Ultimately, this novel is an essential read for those who are seeking a profoundly moving, though undoubtedly challenging, emotional journey that stays with you long after the final page.

This book... it broke me and put me back together, thanks to the incredible characters... resilient, endearing, and funny! Wow! This is the most emotionally challenging book in the series because it touches on some pretty tough and dark subjects, but at the same time it's such a beautiful story of healing, resilience, and love. I cried, I laughed. I went through a myriad of emotions!! Carmen is a strong and exceptional woman! Despite all the horrors she endured in the human trafficking network, she managed, with the help of Axel and the gang, to rise above them and fulfill the promise she made. Axel is gentleness personified and a truly unique man! Marissa really treated us to some steamy scenes! Phew, I was hot and bothered! The chemistry between Axel and Carmen is hot and electric! They complement each other perfectly! I finished reading with a peaceful heart for Axel and Carmen, but excited for what comes next! I can't wait to read Maxwell's book!!!

This fourth book picks up right after the previous cliffhanger, throwing you straight back into the chaos of Axel and Carmen’s story (you definitely need to read book three to fully understand everything going on). From the very beginning, it’s dark, intense, and graphic honestly, only Marissa can start a book like this and fully commit to it.

Axel and Carmen’s connection is emotional and complicated. I loved how Axel immediately becomes protective of her… he’s trying so hard not to overstep her boundaries, but at the same time, he refuses to let anyone hurt or disrespect her. That balance really makes him stand out.

Carmen, though, is carrying an overwhelming amount of trauma (like… so so much 🥺). It’s heartbreaking watching her fight her feelings for Axel because she truly believes she’s too broken and undeserving of love. Everything she’s been through is honestly shocking and hard to process at times.

⚠️ Definitely check trigger warnings before reading ⚠️ this book dives deep into very heavy, dark topics with strong themes including PTSD, stillbirth, psychological manipulation, and explicit sexual content, possessiveness, obsession and extremely emotional.

⚠️ Overall, I definitely recommend this book, especially if you love dark, intense romance. And after that ending… I cannot wait for the next installment, I already know it’s going to be epic. September seriously can’t come fast enough!

WHAT.THE.FUCK?! 🤪
So our rag-tag group of misfits are back again! this time we follow Axel and the crazy family we know and love going after a s*x trafficking ring and taking them down! in book 3 the group found Traceys "lost" sister and resuced her. Axel is in charge of her physical recovery due to his college major in physical therapy. Carmen is broken and has so much trauma 💔 and Axel is just the man to help her! I freaking LOVED this book and this whole series just has my heart! its so funny, each character has their own quirks and the found family aspect is everything! this group of college misfits would do ANYTHING, and i mean, anything for one another! This book was so action packed too I was on the edge of my seat for the last 20% of this book I just couldn't stop turning the pages! I honestly dont know how any of these idiots are still alive but im pleased they are 😂 i honestly cannot wait for book 5 bc that CLIFFHANGER has me 💀😫

Book four doesn’t just raise the stakes—it tears them out of the ground and sets them on fire. This installment drags the series into its deepest shadows yet, where trauma, loyalty, and forbidden attachment collide with explosive force.

Axel and Carmen’s story is a storm—violent, tender, and unstoppable. Axel is the kind of hero forged in conflict, torn between guilt and desire, desperate to protect someone who no longer believes she deserves saving. Carmen, shattered but unyielding, fights her way through the wreckage of her past with a survivor’s ferocity.

Their connection isn’t gentle—it’s raw, consuming, and carved from pain and hope in equal measure.

With powerful themes, heavy trigger warnings, and emotional intensity that doesn’t let up, this book is a plunge into darkness that rewards readers with one of the series’ most unforgettable, heart‑clenching journeys. It can stand alone—but read in order, it hits like a final blow you never see coming.

The fourth installment in this series doesn’t just bring drama it detonates it. Carmen, Valentina (Tracy’s) sister, storms into the story like a force of chaos, carrying the scars of a nightmare she barely escaped. Rescued in the previous book, she’s far from healed, and her collision with Axel, the brooding MMC with his own demons is anything but smooth. Axel’s connection to the past runs deeper than he expects; his twin sister, Lois, endured the same living hell as Carmen, binding their fates in pain and survival. As the truth unravels, the weight of what was done to them comes crashing down, but instead of breaking, Carmen and Axel become each other’s anchor. Together, they confront their trauma, push through their fears, and rise with a shared, burning purpose: revenge against those who destroyed their lives. Dark, intense, and gripping, this book doesn’t just continue the series it raises the stakes and leaves you desperate for what comes next.

I knew this book was going to be a roller coaster of emotions and I can't think of a better man for the job than Axel. Cameron has been to hell and back and the kind hearted Axel is just the one who can worship her. This book was definitely hard to read at times and I had to step away a few times. It went into great detail about all the trauma she endured and the strength needed to survive — definitely check the trigger warnings.

I also enjoyed getting to see more of the dynamic between Dean and Axel and how their friendship evolved. What they are all building after everything they have been through is truly inspiring. And OMG just when I thought Lily and Cane couldn't get any crazier ... they do: "Alexa play chk chk boom". I am obsessed with this series and each and every couple!

This 4th book in the series, is FULL OF DRAMA! Carmen, Valentina (Tracy’s) sister is a wrecking ball. In the previous book she was rescued along with her sister from the horrible situation they were in. Axel the MMC in this book has a twin sister named Lois, who was in the living hell with Carmen and experienced horrible things together. Carmen who was rescued by Axel have a rocky start at the beginning. Axel finds out about the horrible things that have happened to Carmen and eventually about his sister Lois. Together Axel and Carmen help each other through their trauma/fears and help over come them, as well as, getting revenge on the people who involved in their torture through sex trafficking. Another great addition to this series, can’t wait for the next assignment.

This is the fourth book in the Assignment Series and it's a gripping, emotionally charged romance that completely delivers on every level, earning a full five stars. Almost immediately, the story engages the read into a world of intensity, passion, and complex characters, with Axel himself standing out as a powerful, unforgettable lead. The chemistry between the main characters is electric, layered with tension, vulnerability, and just the right amount of angst to keep you hooked. The writing is immersive and polished, balancing steamy moments with genuine emotional depth and character growth. Every twist feels purposeful, and the payoff is deeply satisfying, making this a book that’s hard to put down and even harder to forget.

Marissa really took the cake this time with Axel’s story!! All I can say is OMG from beginning to end.
This story is definitely the darkest of the series so far, but dont let that deter you from reading this! This book was awesome. It is about FMC. Carmen who is a victim of a trafficking ring and her survival. She has endured endless trauma for almost a decade, and when she is finally free, she wants revenge. What she didnt know was that she would be falling for Axel, her ex girlfriend’s brother!
This book talks a lot about Carmen’s trauma, and the steps she took to overcome that and not let the bad people win, and I love that.
That whatever bad things happen, there is a light at the end of the tunnel… even if that tunnel lead us to a cliffhanger!
Can’t wait for Maxwells story!!

4/5 ⭐️
“Good boy” 😋
Listen. Do these books get more unhinged as they go on? yes. But if you’ve read the first 3 books then you know it wouldn’t be a Marissa markx book without the hilarious chapter titles and the fucked up plot…that keeps on thickening.
I loved Axels story. I also loved how this whole series is the definition of it’s a small world 😂
The tears that fell for Carmen tho.. Marissa, now I know why you were having difficulty writing that chapter, you absolutely gutted me. As funny as these books are, they cover some really deep and dark topics and just get deeper and darker as you read on. Trigger warnings are not my thing but I would suggest not going in blind with this one.
Soooo Maxwell….👀
