Because the dead do not forgive…

Unable to find work, Alice Deaton, with her unique ability to interact with the dead, takes on a lead role in a psychic show touring London. When a young woman with a knife brings chaos to the inn where she’s performing, Alice finds herself drawn by the woman’s aunt into a dark and disturbing mystery. Her search leads her to an old city bookshop, where she encounters a sinister spirit – the woman in the widow’s lace. Who is this harrowing entity, and what does she want from the living?

Set in the sprawling streets of London, Alice’s latest mystery will test her to her limits, as she realises she may be playing an unwitting role in the ghost’s twisted – and increasingly deadly – intentions…

An atmospheric ghostly thriller that keeps you guessing until the last page.

As I’ve mentioned before regarding Griffin’s books, readers who love a ghost story with authentic touches of how the paranormal/supernatural crosses into the world of the living will enjoy this book. These authentic touches are extremely important to me as a reader.

What I enjoy about Griffin’s storytelling is the atmospheric elements that not only firmly set you squarely in the UK’s villages and cities but also pull you into an intriguing cast of characters–both living and dead. The main character, Alice, has a sensibility about her that makes her very likable. Her down-to-earth personality perfectly suits her as she tangles in the matters of the ghosts seeking her attention.

This is the second book I have read by author Steve Griffin, and I look forward to catching up with all of his books.

Steve Griffin’s latest novel in his Ghosts of Alice series, The Woman in the Widow’s Lace, is thrillingly satisfying. It has all the supernatural and preternatural tingles that you could want along with several unnerving jolts. It’s simply a great ghost story. Beautifully written, with an atmosphere and setting that are ideal, it also weaves a literary thread that ties it to great storytelling of the past.

Having read all his other Alice Deaton ghost novels, I was able to enjoy this book on many levels, as relationships from previous supernatural adventures carry over. But Mr. Griffin does a great job of explaining enough basics of past events and people, without slowing the storytelling down, to make it a powerful read, whether you have read his other Alice tales or not. All the books is his The Ghosts of Alice series can be read as a stand-alones.

It was shocking to find Alice working as a medium in a traveling stage show that was performing at a hotel in London. Times had become desperate enough for her to take this job in order to survive. Her own embarrassment at this drastic turn in her career breaks your heart. Up till now, she has always used her gifts of being able to see and feel what the dead feel, seriously, in order to help people in need, even at the risk of her own life. I really enjoyed the scenes of her “performing as a medium” on the stage, and there is one scene in particular that is so disturbing, it will stay with you. And the atmosphere and drama that takes places in a bookstore is another all-time spooky winner. Alice’s life, as well as those around her, is once again in peril, but in a brand new way. This ghost is quite different and particularly menacing.

The novel introduces unresolved material from a previous book with the main ghosting of this book successfully. This gives the reader twice the thrills in one book.

If you love a ghost story that takes place in the here now, but is also rich with those elements that have worked in the literature of fine ghost telling for over two hundred years, then don’t miss this book.

This book catches up with Alice as the featured act in The Light Unseen, a traveling show where Alice is expected to help ghosts cross to the other side in front of a live audience. Unfortunately, the spotlight brings out all sorts of ghosts, and Alice grows weary of seeing them as she goes about her daily life. She's ready to quit the show when a distraught young woman shows up wielding a knife, and Alice is drawn into solving what harrowing creature has latched onto this harried person.
Griffin writes a a creepy tale (not too scary for me though), and I was totally immersed in the story which involves a spooky spin on one of my favorite books. He makes it very easy for readers to enjoy each of his books in the Alice series as a a stand-alone. Readers and authors alike will appreciate his insights about books.

This is the 5th instalment of the Ghost of Alice Series, and in this book, set in modern day London but with a very Victorian vibe, we find Alice, the ‘ghost-whisperer’, in a very dark place, financially and emotionally. She’s questioning her life choices but can’t stop herself from trying to help someone plagued by a ghost, even when this particular ghost turns out to be unusually powerful and dangerous. Written in Steve Griffin’s effortless style, this is a page-turner of a book in which elements and characters from previous books in the series are skilfully woven, and has exactly the ending I was hoping for. Is this the final instalment of the Ghosts of Alice series, or will Alice find herself pitted against the denizens of the Other Side once more?
