The Pumpkin Pact: A Small-Town Fake Dating Romance

Rate this book
Faking romance was easy… until it stopped feeling fake.

Harper Venn is determined to save her small-town bookstore and the historic Main Street of Hollow Creek, from a developer with bulldozer dreams. Her best shot? Pulling off the Pumpkin Festival of the century.

The problem? She must plan it with Dexter Rowen. Her former best friend. Her almost-something. Now he’s back in town, looking infuriatingly good in flannel and very willing to challenge her carefully guarded heart.

When the town mistakes their bickering partnership for romance, Harper and Dex agree to fake date, just until the festival is over. But with cider-fueled nights, meddling neighbors, and a tuxedo cat who clearly has opinions, their pact starts to feel a lot less fake.

Saving the bookstore might take spreadsheets, string lights, and a little bit of small-town magic. Saving her heart? That’s going to take a lot more.

The Pumpkin Pact is a small-town fake dating romance full of autumn charm, second chances, and a grumpy hero who can’t resist his sunshine bookshop girl.

3.5 stars. Mr. Darcy (the cat) is my favorite character.

I think if you’re a casual reader, and looking for a cozy, light and festive read for the fall season: you might want to pick this one up.
This has:
- Cozy autumnal vibes
- Small town romance
- Friends to lovers
- Slow burn romance
- Fake dating

Though I will say, if you are more of a seasoned reader who has already read a lot of books with a similar plot or theme, it might come off as being a bit simple.
I don’t mean that in a bad way! Sometimes you want a simple and comforting book- something that feels a little bit familiar.
But I personally read a lot, so this didn’t feel super “new” to me.

I do love the vibes though. Also, I can always appreciate a book that promotes supporting local businesses, and community efforts to save small-towns from developers that seek control.

As for the romance, Harper and Dex felt like a good match, though I would have liked to see both of them be a bit more… developed.
We see them working together, but we don’t rally get a whole lot of information on them as individuals.
But, neither of them were particularly problematic or toxic, which was nice.
Just sweet and wholesome friends that fall in love.

Overall, it is a cute story. It isn’t that long so it reads quickly.
I thought it was good, but I also think there is a better audience for it!

Thank you to Booksirens and author Annie Carlisle for providing me with the eARC of “The Pumpkin Pact”! I received a copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

ARC reveiw: A cozy smalltown story with two adorable main characters in a very autumny setting.

It's like a piece of pumkin pie with extra pumkinspice - and spice ;)

A very slow-burn romance, with friends to lovers and banter. The smalltown autumn vibe were very strong and it's a short story perfect for the season and to reach your reading goal.

I honestly didn’t like this book? It took me almost two weeks to read it even though it’s less than 150 pages. I felt like there was no real plot, maybe due to the length of the book? I don’t know.

I also felt like the enemies to lovers trope that was in the premise wasn’t actually there? The fake dating was also not good and this book was so confusing??? Like the people being in a place and on the next page being completely somewhere else? So confusing and I was left with so many questions at the end.

So I’m being kind and giving this book 2 stars.

Very adorable. While it had some spice at the end, it was more about Dex and Harper working together to rebuild their town and run Vernon out of it. They, as a couple, are so cute! Awkward glances and moments but they finally opened up. Perfect cozy fall vibes.

TIME SENSITIVE OFFER

The story takes place in Hollow Creek, Vermont, where neighbors are familiar with one another and often work together. Now Vernon Blackstone, the developer, has plans to change the town, bulldozing down businesses, such as The Wandering Page bookstore, to put in mixed-use buildings, thereby destroying the quaintness of this town. He has been shmoozing council members, trying to get his revitalization project to move forward. Can a Halloween Festival co-chaired by Harper Venn and Dex Rowen be the Hail Mary to preserve the town?

“This isn’t a charity bake sale, Vernon. It’s a fundraiser, a community showcase, and a public demonstration that these businesses are valuable and viable. Not to mention vital to the community.”

“First, we plan. Then, we charm. Then, we win.”

Dexter ‘Dex’ Rowen and Harper Venn have been friends most of their lives. He left Hollow Creek and went into the Army, and after a medical discharge with a knee injury, along with a broken engagement, he has reestablished himself in town. He was always close to Harper, and while he does handyman jobs, he also looks out for her, making sure she eats and gets home safely each night.

What a charming story with delightful characters. I loved the camaraderie of the residents, how they band together to have a successful Halloween Festival, while raising funds needed for the library annex. One of the suggestions by some of the organizers is to see a romance between Dex and Harper—‘optics until the vote.’ While this was ‘fake dating’ for visual, somewhere along the line, the lines become blurred, and the emotions feel real.

Harper: Okay. If we’re doing this—this optics thing—we should say the parts out loud. My line is drawn around second choices. I won’t be the understudy for someone else’s life again.
Dex: Copy. My line is truth. I’m not pretending I don’t want things I want. I won’t use the plan as a place to hide in.
Harper: Rules. We check in when something feels off. We don’t let other people narrate this for us. And if one of us says pause, we pause.
Dex: Deal
Harper: Optics until the vote.
Dex: Optics until the vote.

I don’t usually write review, however I am not sure if I just missed the plot with this one. It had me questioning my reading comprehension, which is a big deal since I have an English degree. I can overlook grammar issues and even plot holes. There were times when characters were on the front porch one sentence and the next at the council meeting, or times when a face was covered and said to have run, but was still caught in the same place. I had to read that one over and over to see if I missed that she thought about running… it wasn’t a thought. I never DNF books even if I cringe throughout a read. You can’t give a review if you never finished it to see if progress happens. With that being said, I am left with so many questions(possible spoilers ahead):
- What happened to Harper that she couldn’t trust Dex? He mentions he understands why she couldn’t believe him, but why? Was it because he left for the Army and got engaged to someone else? Was it an ex-boyfriend?
- When Dex’s mom comes up with the “optics”, Harper seems to understand but then is shocked that they need to act like a couple.
- The whole “optics” and “ground rules” made no sense and they constantly ignored the rules they set.
- It’s cool for Dex to go to the shop, help Harper do all the things, have her text him, and such, but lack of trust and knowing how the other feels is not there? Really?
I know it’s fiction. I know some things don’t matter, but I left confused after reading this one. I truly wanted to like, but this was a rough read for me.

🍂 4 stars — Cozy, charming, and full of fall vibes. 🍂

This book felt like stepping into a Hallmark movie in the best possible way 🥰. I chose The Pumpkin Pact because I was craving something with that Fall feeling and romantic —> it delivered: cider nights, string lights, a small-town bookstore, and a grumpy hero who made me swoon more than once.

Harper was such a relatable lead—her love for her bookstore and her town made me want to fight right alongside her. And Dex? He’s the kind of character who grows on you slowly, like a warm mug of apple cider. Their fake dating pact was hilarious and sweet, and the chemistry between them had me smiling through entire chapters. The side characters were perfection!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I’m leaving this review voluntarily but I would’ve happily paid for this cozy escape. It gave me all the fall vibes I was hoping for. 🍁

Why not five stars? A couple of moments felt a little too predictable, and I wish we’d gotten more depth from Dex’s side of the story. There were so many little tid bits about him that we didn’t get to deep dive into and I really wanted to know more!

Highlights:

🐈 A tuxedo cat with main character energy

📚 A heroine who fights for her dreams

💡 Twinkle lights and festival magic

💘 Fake dating that turns very real

If you love second chances, small-town charm, and a romance that feels like fall in book form, The Pumpkin Pact is a must-read.

As a pumpkin spice, gourd-loving, fall enthusiast stuck in Queensland, Australia (where autumn vibes are basically a dream), I’m always on the hunt for seasonal romances that whisk me away to crunchy leaves, cozy nights, and small-town magic. The Pumpkin Pact delivered just that; a short, easy read that still managed to feel full, warm, and satisfying.

Harper and Dex’s banter had me absolutely grinning. The writing style is witty, flows effortlessly, and makes their chemistry shine. I adore Harper (girl, same—we do love a competent man) and Dex is the perfect balance of grumpy but endearing. Their fake-dating antics had me rooting for them the whole way through.

But can we talk about Harper's cat, Mr. Darcy? A "tuxedo god inconvenienced by the existence of the rest of the world". His comedic timing had me laughing out loud, especially in one unforgettable scene involving a stroller. The town itself is hilariously unhinged in the best possible way, meddling neighbours, gossip, festival chaos, and all.

If you’re after a cozy, pumpkin-spiced escape with second-chance romance, witty banter, and small-town shenanigans, this book is the perfect pick for your fall TBR...even if, like me, you don’t actually get fall.

Harper Venn owns a bookstore, Wandering Pages, located on Main Street in Hollow Creek. When a developer expresses interest in acquiring the area and has been meeting with the town council, Harper is worried. She has help from Dexter Rowen, her one-time best friend who was almost something “more” before he joined the military. He is back in town and they plan to save her bookstore and Main Street. They’ve scheduled a weekend festival with participation from all of the store owners to prove, to the council, that Main Street is still a vibrant business district. They don’t trust the developer as he keeps asking Harper to sell. She was wary of getting involved with Dex, but as they work together, they begin to slowly remember what was between them before he left. Will the festival prove that Main Street is not just businesses, but the beating heart of Hollow Creek? Everyone in town is in favor of Harper and Dex as a couple, well, except for her cat, Darcy, who is not impressed. As the festival comes together, will they be able to earn enough for the library and save their stores? A beautifully written small-town romance. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)

**ARC REVIEW**

The Pumpkin Pact by Annie Carlisle is a cozy, feel-good fall read brimming with small-town charm and pumpkin spice vibes.

The story follows Harper Venn, a small-town bookstore owner trying to save her shop (and Main Street!) from a developer, and Dexter Rowen, her former best friend and almost-something who’s just back from the military. When the town mistakes their bickering for romance, they agree to fake date through the Pumpkin Festival — though their growing feelings sometimes feel predictable.

Harper and Dex are a sweet pair, and I enjoyed their easy friendship and playful banter. That said, I wish the story had delved deeper into their backstories and emotional growth, which would have made their romance feel more compelling. Still, the festive setting, quirky side characters, and Harper’s mischievous cat, Mr. Darcy, add warmth and charm.

If you enjoy second-chance romances, fake dating, and autumn-in-a-book vibes, The Pumpkin Pact is still worth adding to your TBR! 🍂📚

Thanks to Annie Carlisle and BookSiren for the ARC — all opinions are my own. 💛

Wonderful holiday themed romance. The main characters (Dex and Harper) have chemistry, something everyone in town sees except them. Having returned from service with a medical discharge (and emotional baggage) Dex is happy to simply "be" with Harper, though their 'just friends' is quietly killing him. Drawn to him despite herself, the banter between Harper and Dex throughout this book had me smiling from ear to ear. Throw in a town festival, mischievous family and town folk, a meddling ARMY buddy, and one highly determined developer ready to play dirty to get what he wants, and this storyline will have you glued to the pages. While happenings are chaotic, the storyline flows smoothly and ensures you follow every nuance and gentle push our duo receive along the way to trying to win over the council. They have one shot at success, on multiple fronts. Only time, and some well placed optics, will tell the story.

I received a gift copy of this book and voluntarily provided this review. It was a joy to read and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Happy Reading Y'all 📚

The description of The Pumpkin Pact sounded so good that I went in with high expectations which unfortunately made the reading experience a bit disappointing for me.
I saw on the author’s website that this is a standalone, but honestly? I wanted more. More romance, more tension, more emotional payoff. The idea was there the execution just didn’t fully deliver for me.
This book promises a fake dating romance, but that element barely appears. We really only get it in the last 3% of the book, and while it was cute, it felt far too rushed to be satisfying.
The premise itself had so much potential. Harper and Dex teaming up to save their small town and Harper’s bookstore. You can absolutely feel that there is tension and something brewing between them which is honestly what made it more frustrating for me.

What makes this harder is that I actually loved the beginning. A small town coming together to save itself and a beloved bookshop? Yes, please. That setup hooked me immediately. I just wish the story had leaned into it more.

Thoughts:
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This is such a cute and cosy autumn read. The romance didn’t feel rushed despite the length of the book and it all felt realistic, I also appreciated how well fleshed out the festival story was alongside the romance element making this a more well rounded book. All the townspeople were such loveable characters and added some extra humour to the story, especially the book club ladies and their antics. However, my favourite character may have to be the cat instead, I loved Mr. Darcy and his personality really shone through. Vernon was also well written to be a truly hateable character making us happy when anything goes wrong for him.

Favourite Quote:
“There's something indecent about how attractive competent men are.”

Harper and Dex are co chairs for an important fall festival to save their cute town from a developer and begin fake dating to captivate the romance of the town. Will it work? Will it last?

The Pumpkin Pact is a sweet novella that takes place in a town called Hollow Creek. I enjoyed this setting and the business owners on Main street, and the festival they plan is fun for everyone. The characters are likeable and believable, but I felt like the end was rushed a bit. I wanted to see more reaction from the developer that is stalking most of the town before the festival. If you like small towns with independent businesses (book store! small town restaurants!), this story is for you!

The perfect read for a lazy afternoon! This is a story that gives you warm fuzzy feelings while at the same time you want to help plot the downfall of the villain of the story. Harper and Dex get talked into faking a relationship, while trying to save the main street of the town from a developer who wants to bulldoze it down. In doing so, Harper and Dex realize what the entire town already knows, nope I'm not telling, lol. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. My favorite part of this story was when Dex's friend Cole meets Harper's cat for the first time and how Dex reacts to it, funny stuff!! I loved how the whole town comes together, this is exactly why small town living just can't be beat!

The Pumpkin Pact by Annie Carlisle is the definition of a cozy autumn read — full of pumpkin spice vibes, small-town charm, and friends-to-lovers energy. I really enjoyed the festive setting and the overall feel-good tone of the story. It’s light, easy to read, and perfect if you want something warm and low-drama.
That said, while it was cute, it didn’t fully hook me. Some moments felt a bit rushed or surface-level, and I found myself wishing for deeper character development or more emotional tension to really pull me in.
Still, if you’re in the mood for a quick, fall-flavored romance that feels like sipping a pumpkin latte on a chilly day, this one will scratch that itch — even if it didn’t totally blow me away.

The Pumpkin Pact by Annie Carlisle is the kind of cozy, heartfelt romance that sweeps you away like a crisp autumn breeze. From the very first chapter, the story captures the warmth of fall—pumpkins, small-town charm, and just enough emotional depth to keep the pages turning late into the night.

Carlisle does a beautiful job weaving together friendship, love, and second chances. The characters feel real and relatable, each with quirks and vulnerabilities that make you root for their happiness. The chemistry between the leads is sweet but also layered with the kind of tension that keeps you smiling one moment and tearing up the next.

What I loved most is how the book balances seasonal charm with genuine emotion—it’s not just a “pumpkin spice” romance, it’s a story with heart, growth, and a message about taking chances when life doesn’t go as planned.

If you’re looking for a cozy fall read with romance, heartwarming moments, and plenty of pumpkin-flavored magic, this book is a perfect pick. Annie Carlisle delivers a story that will stay with you long after the last page.

**I DNF’d the book

Rating: ⭐️
Spice: unknown since I DNF’d it

Review: There was no true premise. I thought it was supposed to be an enemies or friends to lovers kind of thing based on the description but like no? The forced dating felt even more forced than expected and there was a part that one minute there was a text the person was home and on the next page the person was in the room with them having a conversation? Confusing. Cute premise if the book was complete or had a better plot or not as confusing.

‘The Pumpkin Pact’ was sweet. The plot involved community, coping with a sleazy developer, taking charge of the town’s Pumpkin Festival, being on a mission, fake dating, finding romance, tolerating Mr. Darcy, guarding the town’s businesses, and falling in love. Moreover, Harper and Dex, the well-written protagonists, were ideally suited for each other and oozed chemistry. Additionally, I appreciated the author’s writing style, which featured engaging characters, a fascinating small-town setting, a captivating storyline, and vivid descriptions that created a lively tone. Overall, I liked the pleasing narrative. I received a copy for free and am giving my honest review voluntarily.

Wow wow wow. I loved this book. This was the perfect festive, fall read to kick off the season. It gave me cozy, Hallmark vibes with humor and spice sprinkled in. Harper and Dex are very lovable and you are rooting for them from the very beginning. The character that took the cake for me was Mr. Darcy. He added many laughable moments and added some color to the story. I also love that Harper owned a bookstore! Overall, the only thing that made me sad was that I couldn’t stay in this world for a few more pages. 5 stars. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Harper and Dex have a Hallmark-esque vibe, and it was easy to enjoy this fall themed read.
A devoted bookstore owner, Harper is easy to relate to, and enjoy. Honestly - her cat Mr. Darcy - was a scene stealer, many times! :)

Dex was a good fake boyfriend, but as we all know, fake doesn't stay fake for long, and their chemistry kept me entertained. While this was predictable, it was exactly what I expected a fall read to be, with the warm, cozy feelings, and it was easy to turn the pages.

This has all the small-town, fake relationship, autumn festival vibes you want, and I recommend this read. My ARC came from Booksirens (thank you) and my thoughts are my own.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.. What a perfectly pitched seasonal read 🎃 A charming small town pulling together to save their local shops from a big, bad developer sets the stage for a cute love story filled with cosy, “love can conquer all” vibes 🥹 I found this super enjoyable and genuinely funny — packed with little quips and descriptions (the cat’s wailing “like a dying accordion” had me laughing out loud 😂!) that added such warmth and charm. Very Hallmark-esque, a little sickly sweet at times, but honestly I was here for it 👏🏻 A fab, fun read that delivers exactly what you’d hope for from a small town romance. 🍁✨

What to expect when reading The Pumpkin Pact;

-Fake Dating
-Small Town
-Grumpy x Sunshine
-Second Chance

In this book you get to follow Harper and Dex!! If you are looking for a cozy hallmark(y) romance this is perfect for you. I will say I love gossiping older ladies in stories. They add a piece of humor I think helps tie the story together. Harper isn't going to go down without a fight and in her corner is Dex to help along the way. This is a fast pace story but fun, and Mr. Darcy for the win lol

Small town America. This is where values are born and taught and enforced. We used to be a country of small towns all across our nation but as we lost thd towns we lost the values too.

Harper and Dex are everything that is good in a small town. I love her spunkiness and her spirit and willingness to stand for what she believes then turns around and encourages those around her to stand for their own values too. I really hope we get Cole’s story too.

A sweet story with just a bit of spice. Harper and Dex agree to fake a relationship to help with what his mother calls "optics" to help save their town from a greedy developer. They are tasked to work together on a fall festival to sway the town council to keep things as they are. The more time spent working together, the more they want to be together romantically. If you have read other books by this author this story reads a little different. It is a quick, enjoyable, seasonal read. So, I typically don't review this low and while this book wasn't bad, it didn't really win me over. Our main characters are Harper Venn who owns a local bookstore and Dexter Rowen who was her bestie and almost more before he left for the military. He's back and the two work together to save their small town from an outside developer. It was cute but predictable and I just didn't connect or resonate with our characters. Again, not a bad book but for me its was just okay.

A small-town fake dating romance story of Harper Venn and Dexter Rowen. This one had me smiling at these two and the crazy idea they come up with to save their town. I love it when the council/political baddies get their comeuppance. Especially when a small town is involved. Harper and Dex with some of the towns people came up with a plan to save some old heritage buildings from demolition.
Mr Darcy and Colt had me grinning along as they teased Dex and gave him an inferiority complex. The humour and behind the scenes betting or raffle kept me wishing for more.

Great read. Harper is determined to save her bookstore and the entire street from Vernon who wants to tear down the entire block. Harper is determined not to let it happen.

To win she needs the help of her ex best friend, Dexter. The man who was almost more than friends. The town sees them argue and they think they are in love. Harper and Dex decide to fake date to until the fall festival is over. However, they each begins to have feelings for each other but neither one tells the other.
