I was happy to find ‘Lady Suspicious’ in the advanced reading copies list. I’ve been looking forward to the next book in the ‘Senseless complications’ series. I have enjoyed every single one of them so I’m glad to read another book in this series and gladly share my review.
Book 6 is about Winsome, another daughter of the Duke of Pelham. This daughter has read all about rogues and villains so she feels she’s warned sufficiently for the real life rogues and she hopes her books have helped her to spot one miles away. Unfortunately, the man she sees as a rogue, lord Manderbey, is actually very respectable and nice, but for Winsome to realize that, a lot happens. Of course there’s another scheme by the duke’s sister to have a butler in her brother’s household, the game ‘Fact or Fib’ is back and again the heroine and the hero fancy each other right from the start (which I like!) but there are lots of misunderstandings to complicate matters.
All of this combined with the duke’s good natured tendency to have fun, a grandmother with plans but without any regard for rules and Society, a chaotic ducal household, a tremendous dog and fun secondary characters, and you are having so much fun reading this book! I am thinking of Leland’s grandmother’s moth-eaten beaver fur costume for the masqued ball; Landry and his issue with greased potatoes and Mrs. Right scaring the spy-butler into confessing everything.
I did spot a few little mistakes in the book:
• While playing ‘Fact or Fib’, lord Manderbey is handed a blue ticket by Verity for telling a fact, whereas it should have been a yellow ticket. Blue tickets are given after fibbing.
• When lord St. John came to visit (chapter 10), he greets Felicity and Serenity with “Ah, Lady Felicity and Lady Thorpe” but since they are both married, he should have addressed them as “Lady Stratton and Lady Thorpe”. Again, in chapter 11 Lord Manderbey does the same: “Lady Winsome. Lady Felicity. Lady Thorpe. Lady Valor.” Shouldn’t all married ladies be addressed with their married names?
But these little mishaps don’t take away from the book. It is great fun to read, highly entertaining and the pace is good!
Thank you Dragonblade Publishing, Netgalley and author for providing an advanced copy of this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed it; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
