Detective Constable Tom Kessler has spent his career hunting drug dealers, liars, and violent men. But nothing prepares him for John Falstead, a ruthless crime boss who threatens Tom’s wife and children after a surveillance job goes catastrophically wrong.
When Tom realises he can’t protect his family through the system, he turns to the last man anyone would expect: Pete Johnson, a sharp‑witted cocaine dealer with a talent for survival and a grudge of his own. Tom should arrest him. Instead, he warns him. And in that single decision, an unlikely alliance is born.
Pete becomes Tom’s covert informant. He's intelligent, smart, disciplined, and far more loyal than anyone on the squad would ever believe. Together, they navigate a world of encrypted phones, Irish suppliers, violent enforcers, and the constant threat of discovery. Every move brings them closer to Falstead… and closer to disaster.
As the pressure builds, Tom must juggle a failing marriage, a damaged memory from a near‑fatal crash, and a police team who can never know the truth. Pete must stay alive long enough to deliver the evidence that will bring Falstead down.
But in the shadows of Surrey, the backstreets of Holyhead and Dublin, one mistake means death… for both of them.
A Detective’s Dilemma is a gripping, authentic British crime thriller about trust, betrayal, and the dangerous friendships forged when the law isn’t enough.
Perfect for readers who enjoy Stephen Leather, Lee Child, Mick Herron, Henry Porter and gritty British crime thrillers with real-world authenticity.
Peter J Charles is a British crime and intelligence fiction writer whose work grows out of a lifetime spent inside real investigations. Born in September 1953, he began his career in uniform with the Royal Air Force in 1970 before moving into policing in 1983. He later served as a detective with Surrey Police, spending nine years on the Drug Squad and working across surveillance, criminal intelligence, and informant handling. Those years shaped his understanding of how investigations actually unfold — the pressure, the compromises, and the small decisions that change everything.
His fiction reflects that world. Based in Winchester, Hampshire, England, he writes crime and espionage novels that stay close to operational reality. The series follows investigators and intelligence officers navigating credible surveillance work, shifting alliances, and the human cost of modern policing. He favours clean prose, a restrained tone, and character‑driven tension over spectacle. Many of the details in his books come from real operations, though he leaves it to readers to decide which.
Readers who appreciate grounded British crime, authentic tradecraft, and stories built on ensemble dynamics tend to find a natural home in his work.
A well written story exposing a world of drugs and criminal dealings. The story keeps you involved and is a great read if you enjoy police procedure novels.
DC Tom Kessler, a member of the Surry drug squad, only wants to lock up the criminals and take drugs off the streets.
However, to achieve that, he makes a haunting decision.
Oh, I did enjoy this. And I love that it comes with such a degree of authenticity, as it’s written by an ex-detective who was in the drug squad and who very thoughtfully placed a glossary at the front explaining a lot of procedural acronyms and words/phrases. I’ve come across many ‘useful’ explanations…at the end of the book, at which point, they’re utterly useless, if you don't know they are there. Thank you, Mr Charles.
As you’d expect, the story centres around drug smuggling and the lengths a frustrated detective will go to put away a very slimy, cocky criminal for a very long time.
Brilliantly written, well-paced, gritty, with well-rounded characters and compelling right to very end. I noticed in the title that this is a DC Tom Kessler #1. That ‘#1’ is hopeful, because it just may mean there’s a #2. And I’d really love to catch up with Tom.
An excellent read, but there was one more gem that had me laughing out loud. Be sure you don’t miss the brilliant line about the Pizza Express in Woking and someone formerly known as Prince. Priceless.
I am an ARC reader for Book Sirens and this is my honest opinion. I hesitated between 4 and 5 stars for this one. Not because I didn't enjoy it - I did eventually. But for a few chapters I couldn't feel engaged with it. However, once I did, it was intriguing and quite exciting. The author actually did the job he describes so I feel confident that although it is fiction, it isn't far from true reality. In fact the last couple of chapters or so before the last one were quite exciting. If this is how real policing works to take drugs and those deal in them off the streets, I can understand the adrenaline rush it gives the officers involved. However, this book also shows the toll such a career takes on a marriage and home life. I confess I am at a bit of a loss to understand how Tom Kessler, being in the operations room, watching all his colleagues getting ready for a big job, feeling it's his "Happy Place" - then being devastated when he gets home, especially when he thought he'd put everything right. He has confused priorities, surely. This was a good, interesting read.
I can highly recommend A Detective's Dilemma book 1. A British fast paced and exciting crime psychological thriller by Peter J Charles, an ex drug squad detective. This is my first book by this amazing author.
DC Tom Kessler works for undercover surveillance operation on the drug squad, for sixteen years, and his mission is to bring down John Falstead, a well known boss of a criminal dealing in cocaine.
When Tom's family are threatened, he manages to turn a known cocaine dealer who is associated with Falstead as a source to garner information for him.
Tom had served for twelve years in the army, which will serve him well in civilian life working as a DC.
I had empathy for Tom's long suffering wife and children whilst Tom was more or less 24/7 at work.
I felt for Tom too, as he tried his best to try and split himself in two to give his family a better family environment but to no avail.
Peter J Charles's writing is so realistic it made me feel the blood, sweat and tears of everyone involved.
What struck me most was how uncomfortably real this story feels from the very first chapter. The investigation moves beyond a single disgraced politician and exposes a system built on silence, money, and power. Tom Kessler is a refreshingly restrained protagonist, navigating impossible choices without grand speeches or heroics. The uneasy partnership with a cocaine dealer adds moral tension rather than gimmicks. I appreciated the procedural detail and the calm, controlled writing style, which makes the darker moments hit harder. The plot escalates steadily, never losing focus, and the ending feels earned rather than sensational. Gritty British crime fiction done.
I was hooked by how methodical and realistic the investigation feels. The story exposes a network of corruption that is chillingly plausible, and every step Kessler takes has weight and consequence. His moral struggles make him a believable and engaging protagonist, and the uneasy alliances with unsavory characters keep the tension high. The writing style is restrained and precise, letting suspense build naturally instead of relying on sensationalism. The political and criminal dimensions of the story intertwine seamlessly, making the stakes feel both personal and systemic. It’s a thoughtful, gripping crime novel that lingers in the mind long after finishing.
The short prequel to Charles’ detective series; A Day in the Life of Tom Kessler makes all the necessary introductions while setting the stage for the Tom Kessler detective adventures.
From the very first page, readers are pulled into a world of danger, deception, and relentless suspense. Detective Tom Kessler is thrust into a deadly web of secrets where every clue raises new questions and every decision could cost someone their life.
Packed with gripping action, rising tension, and unexpected twists, this thrilling mystery series opener delivers a dramatic start that will leave readers eager for the next case.
This is the first book in a series. Tom Kessler is a detective in a drug unit in Great Britain. He decides to turn a cocaine dealer, Pete Johnson, into an informant to get another dealer, Jon Falstead. Falstead beat the courts out of a conviction and threatened Kessler's family. Pete wants to retire from dealing drugs, but Tom has something over on him that keeps him as an informant much to Pete's chagrin. There is a lot to this story and plenty of British slang, so if you are not into book of this sort, this may not be for you. I found the story informative as to how other Law Enforcement works.
A Detective’s Dilemma is a brilliant fusion of procedural detail and emotional storytelling. Tom Kessler’s moral struggle and the uneasy alliance with a criminal make for an unforgettable read. The pacing is intense, the writing sharp, and the realism unmatched. It’s rare to find a crime novel that feels this genuine like reading something straight out of a detective’s diary. Peter J. Charles has set a high bar for modern British crime fiction. I’ll be recommending this book to every crime and thriller lover I know!
This book pulled me in from the very first page courtroom tension, moral exhaustion, and the slow unravelling of a man who’s seen too much. Tom Kessler isn’t just a detective; he’s the embodiment of every law enforcer who’s had to choose between justice and survival. I could feel his frustration when the guilty walked free, his anger when the system failed, and the ache of his collapsing marriage. The emotional realism hit hard it’s not just crime fiction; it’s a human tragedy disguised in a badge.

The story’s realism and raw emotion kept me completely hooked. I could feel his frustration, the pressure of the job, and the pain of his choices. Peter J Charles writes with such honesty that every scene feels real. It’s more than a detective story it’s about how far one man will go to do what’s right, even when the cost is everything. I absolutely loved it.

Truly unforgettable.
This book surprised me in the best way. A Detective’s Dilemma goes far beyond the typical detective novel, diving deeply into the emotional and psychological toll of justice. Tom Kessler’s struggles felt incredibly real the kind of pain and dedication that makes you pause and reflect. Peter J Charles’s writing kept me fully invested, with each chapter adding more layers to Tom’s character. The combination of tension, vulnerability, and moral questions makes it a powerful story. It’s moving, intense, and beautifully written. I couldn’t stop thinking about it after I finished.
From the first chapter, I knew A Detective’s Dilemma would be something special. The emotional weight behind every decision Tom makes is so well written that I couldn’t help but feel his struggle. It’s emotional without being overdone and thrilling without losing depth. A beautifully crafted story that touched me more than I expected.
This book delivers emotion, depth, and realism in every chapter. Tom Kessler isn’t just a detective he’s a man fighting battles on every side, and the author captures that beautifully. A Detective’s Dilemma is the kind of book that quietly pulls you into a world of moral tension and emotional struggle. Tom Kessler’s journey is painful, honest, and deeply human. I felt every doubt, every weight on his shoulders, and every moment he questioned himself. Peter J Charles writes with a rawness that makes the story feel almost too real at times. The balance of suspense and emotional depth is perfect. This book doesn’t just entertain it makes you reflect on choices, consequences, and the cost of justice. A powerful and beautifully written story.
A Detective’s Dilemma is a powerful look into the emotional storms that come with justice. Tom Kessler’s inner battles felt incredibly real the doubt, the fear, the moments where his heart and duty collide. Peter J Charles writes with gripping authenticity, pulling you straight into Tom’s world. Every chapter holds emotional weight, and I found myself rooting for him even when everything seemed stacked against him. This story blends suspense and soul beautifully. A deeply moving and unforgettable read.
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this surprised me, in a good way. Its sharp, understated, and doesn’t waste time with fluff. Kessler’s world feels real and morally grey, quietly tense, and grounded in the kind of detail that doesn’t shout, just convinces. The writing’s clipped but layered, and the procedural elements never drag. If you like crime fiction that respects your intelligence and doesn’t spoon-feed emotion, this one’s worth your time.
I loved it! I felt like I came to know the characters and couldn't wait to read more of their stories. You get to ride along with the drug squad and learn what they do and the procedures they follow. I found it extremely interesting; I knew that it's better to use several people when tailing someone, but I did not know how they coordinate and work as a team. Fascinating stuff. The people are real; they have their strengths and faults, and every person on the team is completely devoted to the work they are doing. The story moves along at a good pace with lots of action and some humor. I highly recommend this book. Yes yes.
What I loved most about A Detective’s Dilemma was how it shattered the illusion of “good guys” and “bad guys.” Tom is flawed, brave, and sometimes broken. There’s no clean hero here only choices made in dirty shades of grey. The moment he crosses the line and tips off a criminal made my heart stop. I found myself whispering, “Don’t do it, Tom,” even though deep down, I understood why he did.
Tom Kessler isn’t just a detective; he’s a soldier still fighting wars inside his head. Peter J. Charles brings the grit and humanity of policing to life with haunting realism. The dialogue snaps, the tension cuts deep, and the moral struggle feels painfully familiar. I didn’t just read Tom’s story I lived it. Every decision, every shadow of guilt, every small victory left me aching. A masterclass in blending crime, conscience, and compassion.
Peter J. Charles has written something special here. You think it’s a cop story, but it’s really a tragedy about what happens when a good man breaks for all the right reasons. Tom’s descent from duty to desperation is slow, painful, and completely believable. His partnership with Sharon was my favorite part so real and layered. The ending left me staring at the last page in silence. A raw, stunning exploration of morality and madness within the thin blue line.
This book isn’t flashy it’s real. From the first courtroom loss to the final moral unraveling, A Detective’s Dilemma takes you inside the head of a man who wants to do good but ends up lost. The dialogue crackles with authenticity, the pacing is tight, and the emotion hits hard. I finished it at 2 a.m. and just sat there thinking about every choice Tom made. It’s powerful storytelling at its finest.
This story broke my heart in the best way. Tom Kessler is a detective caught between what’s right and what’s necessary, and the emotional turmoil that follows him is written so brilliantly. A Detective’s Dilemma captures the quiet pain behind every decision he makes. Peter J Charles adds depth and realism to every chapter, making the story impossible to put down. The emotional journey is as gripping as the crime elements. A powerful and memorable read that truly stands out.
I was completely immersed in A Detective’s Dilemma. The emotional depth in Tom’s character is absolutely stunning. His struggle with guilt, responsibility, and morality felt incredibly raw. Peter J Charles delivers a story that blends suspense with real human emotion. I loved how the author showed not just the action but the internal battles behind every choice.
