I want to preface this by saying I’ve read all the prior installations and do like the series. But I’m starting to wonder if it’s worth continuing out not. I found this book sloggish to get through, it almost feels like each successive book gets a little less interesting. Each book is feeling more and more similar, character progression feels stagnant and what is there feels contrived and minute. What started with a bang (a man in a fantasy world is killed and sent back to earth as we know it, now 20 years later he has a way back to that fantasy world but he has a huge villain to hide from while bides his time and gets strong enough to have revenge) well 10 books later that plotline hasnt really developed and its starting to feel a bit serial drama, procedural television.
The book sets up a familiar premise that fits a formula used in prior installations. Theres a powerful maguffin and Theo and gang have 80% of the book to level up in time for the 90% battle. This is where we need a twist and the twist delivers something we didnt expect but ultimately only lays the groundwork for future books. The end. Its all getting a bit stale. Nauda and Fiyu have been reduced to very 2 dimensional characters, they’re either being awkward about their relationship, thinking about their relationship or i actually don’t even know what else.
I also think that concept of soul homes was initially great but again its all getting a bit same same. Character has new material, they use it in their soul but it takes time and effort, but when they’re done it thrums with energy and they are 1% stronger. I think there’s only so long a series like this should last and for me it’s reaching the limits. It really wish the author would write like each book could be the last, make it count! Tell an interesting story with heart, skip over things we’ve already read about a hundred time, theres fundamentally not enough conflict in this book. Make the next one a page turner, try to stress the reader out, kill off someone, steal the princess and enslave a hero. Throw them in the deep end and find the most amazing way to get them to claw their way out of trouble
This is fairly deep into the series, and the books continue to be great. The new information about the world is always interesting, the character interactions are entertaining.
This book feels like a transition in the series since they finally start interacting with Aeon tier characters and factions a meaningful amount.
The progression is really satisfying, like there is a really badass scene later in the book where Theo uses his singularity against high tier soulcrafters to great effect.
The overall plot is also entertaining, the central conflict of the book is well executed and it advances the meta plot meaningfully.
Krikree also continues to be an amazing character, and Senka gets more depth.
This book cleverly builds up the new world that our characters are about to explore. After books of hints and fearful whispers, our cast is reaching the power level to participate and effect the schemes that they've previously struggled to avoid. The plot also takes more focus and is well constructed. Character development in the plot is good, and in quiet between the plot is great.
The whole story that this book temporarily caps off is satisfying, but I'm still eagerly awaiting the next book.
1.5 If you remove all the repetitive “go talk to someone, get an item for the soul home, travel somewhere else” and all the angst of “what am I going to do about my soul home” then this book is just the group telling people what they learned in the last book, and two battles.
There is barely any character development (personality wise) in the core characters, and the looming threat of the whole book is so uninteresting that only one of the new enemies even gets a name.
I don’t know how much more I can continue with this series. Each book gets less interesting to me.
I love the Soulhomes and the paths to unfathomable power. To have such tight-knit relationships between friends of multiple worlds and an extraordinarily confusing friend like Senka and Krikree? Or the bug. So awesome I love the friends and they're all so fantastically different.
This was so good. I loved the introduction to political intrigue, I loved the character growth that solidified and the new depths to old characters. I hate that I torture myself waiting for the release rather than reading along on patreon but damn is it worth it. Really looking forward to rereading this series next year.
Fantastic. One of the best books of the series so far. This is one of the few series that, even after 10 books, keeps getting better. Can't wait for the next one, especially since we are seeing our merry band of protagonists hit Stronghold and seeing more of the mysteries surrounding the aeon-class revealed.
A very good series that does excellent world building and plot weaving. The story continues to evolve and the characters grow and develop in a very natural way. Worth the read.
Gah where do I start the info and glimpses of the interworld organisations was awesome, the plot twists and new techniques I couldn’t put this book down it’s so good!
While the book was a good read overall, especially the twists in the climax, the middle portions of the plot felt a tad boring. Having some POV chapters to show what really was happening behind the scenes with the powerful organizations would have been better imo.
Another great book. Followed up on the bigger seeds planted in the last one, namely Theo and Fiya approaching Stronghold ascension, and we learn a lot more of the class above Dominion, as well as the super powers who are manipulating events
A solid entry in the Weirkey Chronicles bringing the gang into the big kid levels. Also has a depiction of quite possibly my favourite training montage.
Thanks you what is becoming one of my favorite stories and I look forward to the next one and I can't wait to hear the audiobook with travis when he gets to them.
