Hi, thanks for stopping by. If we haven’t met before, I write fun activity books and action-packed adventures for children. I regularly visit schools, teach creative writing, and run a book club as part of my mission to spark a lifelong love of reading and writing. I’m honoured to have been described by LoveReading4Kids as an “ambassador of children’s literature.”
When I’m not plotting new stories, you’ll probably find me outdoors either dog-walking on the beach, playing with ponies, hiking up hills, or occasionally running (very slowly).

With a storyline packed with humour, fun, garlic, friends, parties, school and much more what are you waiting for? Get your copy and get ready to sink your teeth into this delightful children's book this Halloween!!! Lexi has included topics/subjects such as school, the dentist and eating vegetables which are all things that many children get upset or anxious when it comes to them and I think children will really relate to Velma. There are also several delightful illustrations scattered throughout which we all enjoyed looking at and pointing things out and naming them. They help the storyline to come to life along with Lexi's brilliant storytelling skills. The chapters are the perfect length to either read one at a time each night or just to devour the whole book in one sitting like we did. We all also thought that it was not just a fun and whacky story but also quite sweet as all Velma really wanted was to fit in with Yasmin and all her friends which, again, many children will relate too! This really is a fun, fast paced and funny book that kids and adults alike will love reading so pick up your copy today and you can thank me later!!!

Overall a fun, brilliant and funny children's book that is perfect for Halloween
A Vampire Is NOT A Pet is such a fun read. It’s jam packed with wacky, manic events as Velma and Yasmin unintentionally get into all kinds of scrapes so that the story races along.
The night-time shaded effect on the first page of each chapter, as well as the illustrations of Velma with her incredibly expressive face, all help make this a really engaging story. With short chapters the book is one that children can read independently, although one or two references such as the importance of garlic can be enhanced by an adult explaining further. Indeed, there’s a sublayer to the narrative that adult readers will really enjoy with reference to stakes/steaks and so on. I thought this approach was brilliant because it makes the story perfect for readers of any age.
However, the real appeal is for the younger reader. From wanting a pet as Yasmin does, through school show and tell, to not enjoying eating green things or being apprehensive about a visit to the dentist for example, there’s so much that is appealing and relatable for children. The most affecting element of all I think, is Velma’s desire to be accepted, to fit in and to have a true friend. In amongst all the funny, zany episodes is a wistful desire to belong. I think all readers, regardless of age, will be able to relate to this concept.
I had huge fun reading A Vampire Is NOT A Pet because it’s filled with action, fast paced and somewhat bonkers – just the kind of narrative young readers will love. And for adults reading A Vampire Is NOT A Pet to or with children, watch out. You’re going to be badgered forever for a vampire as a pet!
This is aimed for children between 6 and 9, I read this to A and we has a fun time, my 10 year old has now asked if maybe she can read it also! Below is mummy's and A's Thoughts, remember shes only 4 so this one is mainly as a mummy's point of few.
A - This was silly and very funny. It made me giggle so much. Silly Yasmin doesn't know Vampires aren't dogs 🙈🤣
Mummy - Firstly A no vampires are certainly not doggies they are night humans that get into mischief like Velma does. This story was honestly such a fun ride, we loved reading a chapter a day and finding out what was going to happen. We was always giggling and it made the perfect children's book. I think the narrative also helps when its talking about eating vegetables or worrying about the dentist visits and school show and tell because its more relatable when your little.
A Vampire Is Not A Pet by Lexi Rees is a most entertaining novel that is perfect for ages eight years and over. Whatever your age, this book will amuse you. There is the repetition that Velma is not a pet running throughout. This enables the child you are reading to, to join in at various times. The story is set from one December 25th to another. Throughout the year, Velma and her human get into various scrapes – especially when her human forgets the rules! Situations include eating garlic; forgetting Velma’s food on a camping trip; a Halloween party; a trip to the dentist and much more. The situations are amusing and will make the adults reading the tale aloud, giggle too. A Vampire Is Not A Pet has a unique storyline. I am hoping for more stories about Velma as she is a rather cute vampire! The illustrations are cute too. This book would enhance any children’s library or junior children’s classroom. I received a free copy via Rachel’s Random Resources for a blog tour. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
This book is pure fun from start to finish! Yasmin is such a relatable main character - full of energy, curiosity, and just the right amount of chaos. The setup is hilarious: a kid desperate for a pet who accidentally ends up with a vampire. Velma is the perfect mix of spooky and sweet, and their odd-couple friendship leads to one ridiculous adventure after another. The story strikes that great balance between funny and heartfelt. There’s plenty of laugh-out-loud mayhem (the blood bank scene is brilliant), but underneath it all, it’s about friendship, bravery, and learning to accept people or vampires who are a little different. The humor feels natural, never forced, and the pacing keeps younger readers hooked. It’s easy to imagine this becoming a favorite for kids who love slightly spooky but not-too-scary stories. A fang-tastically funny read with tons of heart. Perfect for fans of Amari and the Night Brothers or The Worst Witch!
Firstly thank you to Rachels Random Resources, Outset Publishing and Lexi Rees for having me on this tour and sending me a copy of the book. I loved it, i thought Lexi Rees writing style was fun and really engaging it really quickly gave you a picture of the characters so you could see them in your mind as you were reading. I also thought it was really clever that each chapter was like a mini story and we didn't have this massive book that took us through the year day by day. Each chapter added to our main story but was also nicely rounded off so its good for a young child who's still at the beginning of their reading journey to read in one go. As a parent i really enjoying reading with my mini book dragon, it was fun, it had points that made us both giggle and it meant we sat together and did a hobby we both enjoy which took us away from and screen and into our imaginations.
What a fun children's book Definitely worth taking more than a look! With jokes and much more It's a great read to explore!
When her Mum spots an ad for an unusual pet Yasmin's Mum decides that's what she'll get. She didn't anticipate just what it would be And a vampire was a shock, I'm sure you'd agree!
However, Velma is adamant she isn't a pet But into fun and mischief with Yasmin she'll get. Together these two have adventures galore With jokes, fun and so much more!
This is a delightful children's book With chapters and illustrations, go take a look! A humorous read that's a delight Whether you're reading during the day or night.
Short chapters full of fun Adventures out of the sun An engaging, fun read Just what children need!
For my copy of this brilliant book I say a huge thank you As I share with you this, my honest review.
Wow, would we all like to have a vampire as a pet ????????? Well by the time you have read this short story by Lexi you will definitely have decided one way or another.
This is an entertaining and page turning book for children who are looking for something a little bit different - and Velma is certainly that. The different adventures and mishaps that Yasmin and Velma experience are engaging and funny and the end of the book paves the way for the next instalment of Yasmin and Velma.
As well as the narrative the illustrations are funny and add to the storyline with the different expressions on Velma’s face which will make you laugh, and it you are a parent they will look familiar……….
I loved this and thought it was very funny. Yasmin has been desperate for a pet but vampire Velma is definitely not what she was expecting! Throughout the book Velma reminds Yasmin that she is NOT a pet but the connection that they form is adorable. Chaos at every turn, getting into scrapes and some ingenious solutions makes this a brilliant story. I thought that it also cleverly covered friendship and acceptance of others who may be different. Thank you so much to Lexi Rees for sending me a copy to read and review.
This was so much fun to read. The younger ones will love it. I did and I'm fifty-four!
Yasmin and Velma were both likeable characters who brought so much entertainment and enjoyment to the story.
Alongside their scrapes and japes the book does come with those more 'important' moments that hopefully will encourage your child to 'eat their greens', and a timely reminder that the dentist isn't such a scary place...when in reality IT IS!
Vampires are NOT pets and most certainly not just for Christmas.
