Pucking The Single Dad: A Hockey Romance

Rate this book
When custody threats force them to fake a relationship, Serena discovers that loving Brad's son is easy. It's pretending not to love his father that might destroy her.

Brad built his walls high after losing his wife, focusing only on hockey and his asthmatic son, until a snowstorm delivers temptation in the form of the sunshine teacher next door.

I came to this small mountain town for a fresh start, not to fall for the grumpy hockey player next door.

Single dad Brad is everything I should avoid. Guarded, emotionally unavailable, and completely focused on his adorable seven-year-old son, Finn. Brad has built walls higher than the surrounding peaks, and he's made it clear that romance isn't in his playbook.

But when a record-breaking snowstorm damages my cabin and leaves me with nowhere to go, Brad reluctantly offers his guest room. Suddenly, I'm playing house with a man who watches me like I'm both his greatest temptation and biggest threat.

The forced proximity should be temporary. Instead, I find myself falling into a dangerous routine. Helping Finn with his asthma, and stealing heated glances with his dad over late-night wine.

Every day blurs the lines between neighborly kindness and something deeper. Brad's friend keeps making jokes about our domestic bliss. Finn draws pictures of us as a family. And those walls Brad built? They're crumbling faster than my resolve to keep things platonic.

Then Brad's former in-laws threaten custody, and suddenly we're pretending to be a couple to protect Finn. Fake dating is dangerous when real feelings are involved, especially when I'm already halfway in love with a man who's forgotten how to believe in second chances.

I love a good hockey romance, one because of the romance/smutty goodness and two because of the hockey, of course!

This book actually had ice time in the story which made me sit on the literal edge of my seat while I read those sections.

The first part of the story was a little hard for me to get into but as it went on it pulled me in more and I loved it by the end.

This is the story of a girl who was made to feel like she wasn’t enough and teaching kids with special needs was not making her enough money and giving her the right kind of clout. However, Serena Voss is our bada** fmc and I loved her spunk, her heart and her love of helping. I could so imagine being friends with someone just like her. We need more people like this in the world today.

She decides to go to the mountains to get away from her ex (which I have lovingly deemed, Marcus the douche). But problems with her mountain cabin having her knocking on her neighbors door during a blizzard, half frozen.

Enter Brad Wilder, hockey God with a busted up knee and the cutest kid on the planet with severe asthma, Finn. Single parenting is a hard road and single parenting a kid with health issues is a whole different game. But Brad had a system and he stuck to it, like Finn’s life depended on it. Because it did.

When Serena came knocking, he fought his growing feelings for her and his honor of his dead wife’s memory. But those meant to be together will always figure it out.

Finn is my favorite character. This kid is smart as a whip, witty, charming and has zero filter as most 7 year olds do. I love how he binds them together and helps to bring to light the calm Serena injects into their home.

My biggest complaint, if you can even call it that is the way they come together. I know it’s fiction but sometimes it feels forced. Like I said the beginning for me was rough. I can’t pinpoint why, so please don’t take this small criticism for anything more than a personal preference. I have read three of her books now and I really like her stories.

Please give this author a chance if you love small town, hockey romances.

I really hope she writes a sequel about the bff’s. Theo and Maria are hilarious and we get glimpses of them together but not enough. So Riley if you read this please write a book featuring those two.

This story has touched me on a personal level because there were aspects of the story that resonated me. "Every child deserves to be seen as a whole, not a problem to be solved."
The story had many layers to it including family issues, grief, parenting, health issues, career issues, pasts and falling in love. I thought the characters were strong, relatable and I believed in their connection and chemistry, I enjoyed getting to know them and see them fall in love and fight for their family. I loved their best friends and would happily read more of them and whatever was between them.

Pucking The Single Dad by Riley Keenan is the fifth book of the Hearts on Ice series.
Serena and Brad's story is a really good hockey romance. I felt so bad for Serena with her roof caving in, but that helped give all three of them that family feeling.
Riley Keenan keeps you engrossed from the first page to the last with great writing and steam.
